The Bangles' transformation from Merseybeat and garage-smart guitar band to near-definitive example of buffed-and-polished corporate popsters is one of the great rock mysteries of the '80s. What was up with that video for "Walk Like an Egyptian," anyway? Greatest Hits puts it all in perspective, tracing the curve from the post-Beatles group sneer of "Hero Takes a Fall" to the deadly earnest Susanna Hoffs showcase of "Eternal Flame." Shortly after that ballad hit No. 1, the group split. Now unfairly remembered as little more than space fillers on turn-of-the-decade airwaves, the Bangles here make a good case for their spirit, their own songwriting gifts, and, of course, those voices. --Rickey Wright

2 out of 5 stars total 80's cheese.......2007-07-13

I am a gen-xer and I remember these songs. but I have to admit my first reaction when I saw this CD was "the Bangles had hits, plural?"

I had looked up the CD for the version of "A Hazy Shade of Winter." unlike the Bangles, Paul Simon could write good songs.

They do sing well and they do provide a good overview of an 80's sound, but boy, there is so much better out there. in terms of 80's music, I would go with "graceland" by paul simon rather than this. or the talking heads, or depeche mode, or many other groups.

in terms of "girl bands," I think Indigo Girls are much much much better, to name just one example. in terms of female solo artists, musicians like Jill Scott, Lauryn Hill and Joni Mitchell I think are far more talented.

taste varies. they sing very well and they capture the sound, but they wanted to be viewed on par with Beatles? please. and I am not even a Beatles fan beyond casually.

5 out of 5 stars The Bangles - Greatest Hits.......2007-02-03

They were among the girl groups that marked the 80's. I still enjoy their music to this day. Five stars!

I love the Bangles, this collection has everything I could ever want!

4 out of 5 stars Nice Collection.......2006-09-13

I haven't cared for much pop music since the late 60's, but the Bangles are enjoyable listening for anyone. The harshest reviewers of this album complain about not enough good songs and then go on to name 3 or 4 that are good. How many times does an album have more than one good hit song? This one has several outstanding songs and the remaining ones are good listening too. "Going Down to Liverpool" repeates a little too much, but I still like the song. Manic Monday, Eternal Flame and Hazy Shade of Winter are all excellent. Walk Like An Egyptian was a big hit and it's on here too of course. This is a good album and probably a good introduction to the Bangles. It has enough variety to keep it interesting and enough hits to probably more than justify the Greatest Hits title.

5 out of 5 stars Never gets old.......2006-05-12

The Bangles are great group that never goes out of style...I remember as a child purchasing the Manic Monday 45rpm.....and I played it over and over......When this was released..I bought it and of course all the hits are here....Standouts are If She Knew What She Wants,Manic Monday,Eternal Flame,In Your Room,Walk Like An Egyptian,Walking Down Your Street,A Hazy Shade Of Winter, and Be With You...........MAKE SURE YOU GET A COPY OF THIS GREAT ALBUM FROM A GREAT GROUP!

5 out of 5 stars Prince did good!.......2007-05-25

I know this is the Bangles CD, but PRINCE really out did himself with this one! His amazing writing skills always seem to impress me and I just love what he did for "Manic Monday". I also love "If She Knew What She Wants" and "Walking Down Your STreet". This CD should be re-released with the original 12" Mixes. That would be great!

1 out of 5 stars IF you want to know why the 80's sucked, here you go.......2007-05-14

I love the 80's? It's true, the 80's was a great era, but also a ________ era! The fashion, the video games, and theh music! We had awesoem music like Mercyful Fate, Slayer, and Metallica, but we also had horrible hair metal and countless _____ pop. Pop was good and bad, and here's a band that bad. Very _________ bad. Like Bangles bad. Here's the Bangles for you. A _________ group with three untalented _____heads.

The Bangles were some of the worst group of women ever. IF the Pussycat Dolls had an 80's version, it wuold be the Bangles. Well, the Bangles lryics were still tons better than The Pussycat Dolls lyrics, but the Bangles were extremely boring and stupid, not to mention pointless. Then again, a lot of pop music in the 80's was __________ horrible. At least we had METAL!!!!!! Just try to listen to this bland waste for thirty seconds. THe Bangles had one good hit, Walk Like an Egyptian, and they tanked faster than the Lustania (it's a _________ sinking ship!).

If you want a better pop album from the 80's, Hunting High And Low by a-ha Or Welcome To The Pleasuredome by Frankie Goes To Hollywood totally destroy this album anyday of the 80's. Or today. Whatever works.

Here comes the not helpful votes again!

4 out of 5 stars for a while ..........2006-12-12

For a while back in the 1980s, the Bangles - fronted by the inimitable Susanna Hoffs - practically defined the upbeat Girl Band phenomenon. Lightly packaged female angst about men, relationships, and getting to work late again combine with one of the all-time most memorable tunes ('Walk Like an Egyptian') to make DIFFERENT LIGHT an eminently own-able album, one that repays regular listening. The latter song also generated one of the all-time best early music videos.

Influences? One thinks of Heart, especially in the broody voice of Vicki Peterson, who looks seriously offended on the album paperwork. There's an almost Dylan-esque ironic randomnness in the lyrics of 'Egyptian', though the similarities end there.

In sum, a tight sound and a fun band to watch. 'Generative of a question that may await resolution in eternity: 'What ever happened to the Bangles?'

5 out of 5 stars The Bangles Best!.......2006-03-22

I would say get this and don't even bother with the Greatest Hits album. You don't need to have "Eternal Flame" or "Going Down to Liverpool". I remember friends of mine seeing them live and RAVING about them. And these guys were into metal! Susanna Hoffs is ultra hot. Between her looks and that sexy voice she is really special and she still looks amazing. This album has their 2 best songs- "Walking Down Your Street" and "If She Knew What She Wants" and their 2 biggest hits- "Walk Like An Egyptian" and "Manic Monday". Susanna Hoffs is really hot- did I say that yet?

They used to be seen as sex kittens. Now, on Doll Revolution, they look like the cast of Sex and the City. Yet 15 years after the Bangles' last album, Everything, the California power-poppers breeze back in looking and sounding as though they've been gone a mere 15 minutes. Eloquent, assured, and sensual, Doll Revolution is measured yet mesmerizing, considered yet colossal. This is one 80s comeback that really is a good idea.

So is this "doll revolution" some L.A. take on Girl Power? Or a glossy update on Riot Grrrl? Hardly. The Bangles never were ones for manifestos. Melodies are more their game, and these mostly self-penned songs display a beautifully developed sense of songcraft. "Something That You Said" is an exercise in sepia longing, while the sublime West Coast harmonies of "Stealing Rosemary" is a reminder that the quartet originally began life, 20 years prior, as Paisley Underground psychedelics named the Supersonic Bangs.

The gentle ballad "I Will Take Care of You" will have lighters aloft on the comeback tour, yet is also achingly intimate. And the yearning "Single by Choice," glancing back over a life half-done, is both a shoo-in for the soundtrack of the next Bridget Jones movie and also a knowing, experience-heavy poem that they simply couldn't have crafted the first time around. The Bangles have returned older but wiser and there is, as Doll Revolution amply demonstrates, simply no substitute for experience. --Ian Gittins

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars "Head" as good as anything they did the first time around.......2007-03-31

"Tear Off Your Own Head (Doll Revolution)" written by the famous songwriter Declan MacManus and featuring the unmistakable vocals of Ms. Susanna Hoffs, starts off this CD like a crack of thunder. It's a full-frontal attitude piece, reminiscent in spirit of the earlier "Hero Takes A Fall." The thing that set The Bangles apart from other "girl groups" from the beginning was the attitude...that sideways look from Susanna in the "Walk Like An Egyptian" video, for starters. I have a bias when it comes to this band. I'll support anything they choose to release, and in this situation, that support reaped an ample reward.

2 out of 5 stars Not enough Susanna Hoffs.......2006-05-22

Doll Revolution has one major flaw. Only a few of the songs showcase Susanna Hoffs on lead vocals. (I love to hear her sing.) If you purchase this album and enjoy Hoffs' voice, you'll be left wanting more. While I applaud the idea of trying something new, it didn't work here. The Bangles need Hoffs on lead vocals. It's just that simple.

3 out of 5 stars Not enough Hoffs!.......2006-03-22

I loved the Bangles back in the good old days of the 80s, and so I was pretty excited when this CD came out. But like the title says, there is too little Susanna Hoffs and too much of that other one singing. None of the songs are especially strong, but "Something That You Said" and a couple of other tracks are decent, and show Hoffs in good form. But the other songs, about 2/3 of them, are hard to listen to, as the "other singer" does the vocals in her dull monotone voice. Too bad! Hope they come out with another album with Hoffs on all the vocals...

5 out of 5 stars The pleasure of their company.......2005-12-27

When was the last time you bought an "album" and the artist DIDN'T disappoint you. Well, welcome back the Bangles - proving with Doll Revolution that they were more than pretty faces. This is sophisticated songwriting and performance that leaves the listener aching at the beauty of it. Every track is a treat and it's one of those albums one can put on and just daydream. It is an aural pleasure to be back in their company. No one can ever say these ladies - excuse me, these musicians - weren't deserving of their fame. This is music that doesn't disappoint - real people making knocked-out real music. As I said, it's a pleasure to be back in their company.

1 out of 5 stars What an embarrassment.......2005-09-13

I waited 15 years for this? The ladies need to seriously hang it up before they accidentally wake up their sleeping kids.

Once you get married and have kids, dont ever pick up the guitar or drums and hit the record button. EVER.

And please spare the general public your very owned penned lullabyes.

This cd should be a prime example of these cringe worthy phenomenons.

If you want to listen to a good Bangles album, pick up All Over The Place and call it a day. However the musicians who recorded All Over The Place no longer exist. They have been replaced with baby ga-ga mommies, less Michael Steele (who should never have agreed to join this broken down band wagon).

Michael, there is still hope for you... run, run and dont look back! You could be up there with the likes of Bonnie Rait, Sarah Mclachlan or Sheryl Crow! Besides the fact that The Bangles failed to make a hit record after all this time, they proved that they couldnt even pull the songs off on live television. They are supposed to be pro's, right? One would think so after 20 years in the music biz, but they just hide behind their "garage rock" label.

What they pulled off with Hazy Shade of Winter in 1987 will never ever be reproduced. This time around, they had all the same control over the recording process and what we got was horrid.

The included DVD was hardly worth the effort of the physical act of placing the DVD in my DVD player. Completely forgettable and trivial.

This album was many years in the making and many more years trying to find a label to actually market it. I wonder why. Perhaps the perspective labels actually heard the album demos.

If the ladies choose to put out another new cd with this same crappy formula, I suggest they change their name, because they are no longer the Bangles that I remember.

Such potential... such potential..... wasted. At least stick with decent covers. Good covers would have been better than this!

They still kick ass in concert. Too bad, the album didnt contain any of their live energy.

5 out of 5 stars The best Bangles Best of .......2007-07-16

There are a few Bangles Grestest Hits collections out there. The two other popular collections are "Greatest Hits" and "The Essential"... this beats both for a few reasons. This collection takes the popular hits from "Different Light" and puts them right out in front and puts some of the lesser known album tracks in the back. This makes for a very pleasant listening experience. The album tracks used are all very well picked and hold their own against the hits and they aren't too overly poppy which makes these songs easier to enjoy. If fact some would argue that they are better than the hits. To me the hit "Eternal Flame" hasn't held up well over the years but the way this collection flows that song is much easier to take without hitting the skip button. Especially since all the songs that are similar to it like "I'll Set You Free" are no where to be found on this collection.

Another thing that works very well here is this CD clocks in at a little over 45 minutes. Many best of collections try to max out the CD or even carry over to a second CD. 45 minutes is the right amount of time to enjoy these songs without getting bored. I honestly couldn't sit through 79 minutes of Bangles songs.

If you like the Bangles and like 80s pop/rock check out this collection. This could easily be the only Bangles collection you would need and it has replaced my Bangles "Different Light" CD in my collection.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Comprehensive Collection.......2007-01-09

As another reviewer on this page observed, VH1's 'Bangles-We Are the 80's' is the best Bangles compilation CD on the market...and there are many on the market. Before this one, the best you could do was either 1990's 'Greatest Hits' or 2004's 'Essential Bangles'. Both have their virtues: 'Greatest Hits' contained a decent, previously unreleased track ("Everything I Wanted") and a B-side ("Where Were You When I Needed You"). 'Essential' includes an early song from an independently released EP ("Getting Out of Hand") and antother B-side ("What I Meant to Say"). While all four tracks are missing from 'We Are the 80's,'(as are the spare ballad, "Following," the 'Goonies' soundtrack spot, "I've Got Nothing," and Susanna Hoff's melodramatic "I'll Set You Free") the four album tracks replacing them "Complicated Girl," "September Gurls," "Live," and "Dover Beach" are actually better choices than rarities and low-charting singles. When combined with the hits, these new additions help round out a more accurate presentation of the group. Also, each Bangle gets a turn singing lead. If you must only own one Bangles CD, look no further. However, the recent 'Rarities and Gems' collection is higly reccomended as an add-on to this stellar disc. Let's hope VH1 keeps up the good work!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Bangles Collection On The Market.......2006-08-29

The Bangles entry in VH1-Classic's "We Are The 80's" series is the best of the L.A. pop band's many compilations, including their biggest("Manic Monday","Walk Like An Egyptian","In Your Room","Eternal Flame" and their great cover of "Hazy Shade Of Winter" from the film "Less Than Zero")and best("If She Knew What She Wants","Walking Down Your Street","Hero Takes A Fall",and a fine version of Alex Chilton's "September Gurls").The sound and liner notes are both exceptional.Kudos to VH!-Classic!

5 out of 5 stars The Bangles Are BACK!!!.......2006-08-09

Who would not be psyched about have a NEW fresh Bangles CD... this CD contains re-issues of old songs, but includes new liner notes and a ton of pictures. I absolutely LOOOOVE it!! Favorite song: Manic Monday. Everyone should pick this up!

5 out of 5 stars Decent Greatest Hits Collection.......2006-07-23

Twenty years ago this spring The Bangles hit their stride with their sophomore release A Different Light "Manic Monday" proved to be a big success for the group. The group had a lot of hit singles from that album, other singles include "Walking Down Your Street," and "If She Knew What She Wants," but the albums biggest hit would prove to be the single "Walk Like an Egyptian."

The Bangles didn't take too long of a break between albums. They recorded the song "A Hazy Shade Of Winter" for the Less Than Zero soundtrack and in late 1988 they released their third album Everything. The album's first single was an up-tempo number titled "In Your Room," but it would be the second single released, the ballad "Eternal Flame," which would once again send the group to the top spot on the Billboard chart. After the release of Everything things cooled off for The Bangles and the group eventually faded away. There was no big break up announcement the group just went on a hiatus that lasted nearly a decade. Various members of the group pursued other projects. They got back together in the late 90's to record a song for the movie Austin Powers The Spy Who Shagged Me. In 2003, the group released an album of all new material titled Doll Revolution.

Columbia/Legacy records has released VH-1 Classic Presents Bangles-We Are The 80's. Now if you are a fan of The Bangles you may wonder why buy this album if say you own all of The Bangles albums including The Bangles Greatest Hits. The CD includes The Bangles biggest hits from their three albums released during the 1980's and the soundtrack cut Hazy Shade of Winter.

Different than the previous greatest hits collection this set includes the songs "Complicated Girl," "September Gurls live" and "Dover Beach."

3 out of 5 stars Disc 2 non-existent.......2007-02-07

I have to echo the comments of the prior reviewer here. There is no disc 2 with this particular item. I ordered this, looking forward to the extended tracks on the bonus disc, but what arrived had only one disc (disc 1 above). I spoke with amazon customer service, so they sent another copy (while I returned the original), and that too had only one disc. It's great Bangles music on that disc, but don't get your hopes up about any bonus disc...

4 out of 5 stars Definitive Collection is a nice collection but lacks the extended play versions........2007-01-04

This remastered edition of the Bangles' "Definitive Collection" brings back great memories but does NOT contain all the songs that are advertised. The desciption for both the original and remastered "Definitive Collection(s)" lists a total of 26 songs (21 tracks plus five extended versions). The Product Details lists the Definitive Collection [Original Recording Remastered] [Import] originally relased on January 1, 1995 as having one disc but then on the track listings itemizes the contents of two discs (the first disc has 21 tracks and the second disc is supposed to contain the Extended Mixes and Remixes of Walk Like an Egyptian, In Your Room, Haxy Shade of Winter, Walking Down Your Street, and Manic Monday). The Definitive Collection [Import]that was also listed as originally being released on January 1, 1995 lists one disc with 26 tracks. The extended versions are tracks 16, and 23-26.
Other than the missing tracks, this is a great disc if you like the Bangles' music.

Instead of a pure greatest hits package (which has already been done), or a collectors disc to clean up the odds and ends from the Bangles discography which haven't been released on disc yet, this set offers falls short on both.

As stated before, "Going Down to Liverpool" is missing. And that fact alone would make the "average" fan opt for the 1990 Greatest Hits package. Which I would recommend over this if the goal was to have all the singles.

On the other hand, if Sony/Columbia wanted to satisfy the die-hards they would have cleaned the closet and gave us all those rarities. While its great to have "What I Meant To Say", why would they exclude "Getting Out of Hand" while its B-side "Call On Me" is presented? Very odd. What's even more frustrating is that only one cut from the Bangles 1982 EP is featured ("I'm In Line", probably the weakest track.) If they wanted a singles compilation, they should have included "Real World" instead, which was released as a remixed 12-inch. "I Got Nothing" is a pleasant surprise, however it's been dramatically remixed so anyone who wants the original still has to hunt down "The Goonies" soundtrack.

For an odds and ends disc other possiblities would have been "Mary Street", "Want You", "How Is the Air Up There", the rare "Bitchin' Summer (Speedway)" instrumental and the mega-rare live version of "Hero Takes a Fall". And while "I'll Be Your Mirror" and "I'll Keep It With Mine" are solo Susanna songs, they were made during her Bangles tenure. We also know that a live version of "Tell Me" was recorded in 1985 but is still sitting in the can. Let's not also forget "Get The Girl", the 1999 "Spy Who Shagged Me" cut, and the UK B-side edit of "In Your Room". Bonus or hidden tracks could have included the No Magazine ad (set to the tune of "Getting Out of Hand") and Michael's spoken word "El Polo Loco".

So you see there was enough obscure material for a 2-disc Bangles anthology which would have kept everyone happy.

4 out of 5 stars How much better is the remastering?.......2005-12-21

For those of you who own this CD, may I please ask for an ear comparison between this "remastered" version and the 1990 Bangles Greatest Hits CD? I have the 1990 Greatest Hits, which doesn't sound bad to my ear. However the CD case says "AAD" which means it was recorded analog, mixed analog, and transferred digitally. Is this new version ADD? (And I'm not asking about attention deficit disorder) In summation, how does the audio sound head-to-head with the 1990 Best-of? Already having these songs across several CDs, some of us would appreciate an opinionated appraisal of the sound quality vs earlier releases. Thanks. Rock on Bangles! I'll always love the electric inflection that pulses in Susanna Hoffs's singing voice. It's something really special... (I wish her vocals had been more prominent in the Doll Revolution songs rather than having her share singing duties) Thanks again!

5 out of 5 stars FYI.......2005-11-19

I see people are blaming Sony for the final tracklist........if you want to blame anyone for the 15 wonderful songs that are on here, blame the Bangles, they hand-picked them for this release as mentioned on the official Bangles website.

The songs are pretty Essential, though I wish Sony had done a 2-Disc Essential for the Bangles as they've done with a host of other artists.

I wish that we could have gotten maybe another two or three songs on here as "Going Down to Liverpool" SHOULD have been included. It was originally supposed to be on this release when it was first scheduled to come out in 2003, but then the tracklist was changed so it wouldn't be just a Greatest Hits repackage(which it almost was, though we still get 11 out of the 14 songs on Greatest, the tracks that didn't carry over are the aforementioned "Liverpool," "Everything I Wanted," and "Where Were You When I Needed You.")

All-in-all though the tracks we do get are awesome, particularly the previously unreleased "I Got Nothing" mix that is on this disc. This is NOT the same song that was on the Goonies soundtrack despite what the liner notes may say. "Getting Out of Hand" on an official US released CD is also a bonus, because it was a rare track at one point, though it can now be found on a new RHINO boxset as well. "I'm In Line," another rarity is great here, though I prefer "The Real World" from the EP more, but hey....the Bangles chose these songs.

All five of their top 10 hits are represented here as well.

The only thing that was underrepresented was "All Over the Place," which is now out of print....I keep hoping they'll release a remastered version of it with bonus tracks or something, but alas.....

Recommended if you are either a die-hard Bangles fan who has to have EVERY release(like me) OR if you don't have the Greatest Hits yet.

3 out of 5 stars Yet ANOTHER compilation.......2005-10-16

There must be at least 20 Bangle compilations out there, and this isn't better than any of them. This one differs in that it has Im In Line and Getting Out of Hand -- 2 wonderful early Bangle (minus Michael Steele) songs. It also has What I Meant to Say (Eternal Flame B-side) and I Got Nothing (from the Goonies soundtrack) 2 tracks that have been very difficult to get anywhere until now. But quite frankly, these two songs are mediocre and really shouldn't be on any "Essential Bangles" compilations -- only die-hard Bangle fans will be elated to have them on CD. To make this a five star album they should have included Going Down to Liverpool, How is the Air Up There from the Bangles EP and something from Doll Revolution, like Ride the Ride.

4 out of 5 stars Almost as good as "Doll Revolution".......2005-09-28

Overall, an excellent collection of hits and other rarities that benefits from the remastering job. Only the exclusion of "September Girls" and "Liverpool" prevent a 5 star rating. If you liked the gals in the 80's, I highly recommend their 2003 release "Doll Revolution" which updates the classic Bangle-ly Jangle-ly guitar sound with sweet vocal harmonies and clever hooks. It's so rare these days when a 70's or 80's band actually tops themselves 20+ years later. You go girls!

5 out of 5 stars Another strong Broadway by the Year.......2006-08-20

Scott Seigel's concerts, Broadway by the Year gather a group of the current crop of Broadway performers and turn them loose on songs from Musicals that opened during 1 year on Broadway. It helps that 1953 was a strong year musically, with Bernstein's Wonderful Town, Porter's Can Can, Kismet and Me and Juliet from Rogers and Hammerstein. Jule Styne also chimed in with Hazel Flagg which contains one almost standard "Every Street's a Boulevard in Old New York. Some great stuff on this album, wonderfully sung as almost always. I love this series and hope to acquire each and every one at some point.

4 out of 5 stars Not SACD Surround.......2006-12-07

I love the Bangles music, however, I am very disappointed that this SACD is only a stereo release. Don't the Bangles deserve better?

5 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2002-10-16

I bought this because some SACD disks have multiple channels. This one does not. However. the sound difference is wonderful. I was actually surprised at how good it is. As for the Bangles, I personally consider them to be the most creative group of their time. Every song is a fresh sound. Musically sophisticated and constantly interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Some people are just clueless..........2002-08-15

The previous reviewer obviously doesn't know the difference between CD's and audio tapes, so I don't expect them to know the difference between redbook CD's and SACD's.

Anyways, this SACD version of this Bangles' album rules!!

5 out of 5 stars This was a two disc collection at one time........2007-07-15

I bought this collection about 5 years ago. There were two disc included with mine; howerver, the remixes excluding "Walk Like Egyptian" are not the club versions I remember. They are extended versions, but nothing like the versions on their 12" Mixes cd released back in 1987. The sound was horrible on this budget release though.

The sound quality on these discs are superb. I'm not going to complain. The remixes were better on the 87' disc, but the sound quility really sucked. If you were lucky enough to get this two disc version collection, you hit the jackpot. It appaers this release is only available as a single disc now.

3 out of 5 stars The Most Complete Album From Bangles To These Days!.......2004-05-22

I bought this album 2 years ago and it has all their hits and includes a bonus cd with their remixes, I think I'm lucky to have this one because,as I read in other reviews today it doesn't have the bonus cd with the remixes, That's why I rated with 3 stars, now.

4 out of 5 stars No Second Disc-Buyers Beware!.......2004-02-21

The disc of remixes described in the editorial review is NO LONGER INCLUDED in this greatest hits set. On its own merits, this is still the best single-disc compilation available for this group, but don't buy it expecting to get a second disc of remixed rarities.

Buy it, instead, for every charting single the Bangles had--as well as Susanna Hoffs' sole Top 40 hit, "My Side of the Bed"--and an excellent selection of album tracks, and you'll be satisfied. (Then, if you still want more, pick up the Bangles' excellent reunion album from last year, DOLL REVOLUTION. With harmonies and jangling guitars intact, it was a solid return after 15 years apart.)

5 out of 5 stars Great mix!.......2004-02-02

This is a wonderful mix of many different Bangle's songs. It even has four from Susanna Hoffs' two solo albums. There are great hits such as Walk Like An Egyptian, Manic Monday, Eternal Flame, and Hazy Shade Of Winter.

2 out of 5 stars False Advertising.......2004-01-04

A friend just got me this cd from my wish list for Christmas. I really wanted it since based on the reviews, there were a bunch of extended remixes on it. I've got most of the other tracks already. However, when it arrived, it turns out it only contains one disc, not two. There are no remixed tracks. Just 21 tracks and not even in the same order as listed on the track listing on this page. Needless to say I'm very disappointed and I feel badly that my friend paid out nearly $20 for something I don't really need.

In 1984, the Bangles were just another club band from Los Angeles's Paisley Underground scene. Though their peers would disband after mere college radio success, the Bangles would parlay the Underground into superstardom. The curiosity factor then afforded to an all-girl band and their later recording of Prince's "Manic Monday" were certainly instrumental to their rise, but All Over the Place proves that the Bangles were nobody's contrivance. "Hero Takes a Fall," "James," and "Tell Me" showcase Vicki Peterson and Susanna Hoffs's knack for hooks; and covers of the Merry-Go-Round's "Live" and Katrina and the Waves' "Going Down to Liverpool" give props to their heroes. All Over the Place never approached the sales figures of the band's subsequent albums, but the Bangles would never make a finer record. --Bill Crandall

A pure rock and roll album - straight forward guitars, bass, and drums - it's a shame that they degenerated into a typical pop act following this album.

3 out of 5 stars Decent Debut but Overated.......2005-02-23

All of the reviews for this album seem to say the exactly the same thing: That "All Over the Place" is the Bangles best album, presumably before they "sold out". Well, that's just plain wrong. The Bangles, not unlike their namesakes, The Beatles, evolved. They got better with each successive album. "Different Light" was a vast improvement on this, their debut, and "Everything" topped them both. This evolution continues to this day. "Doll Revolution" is better than all three of the 80's albums combined.

The Bangles are one of my all-time favorite groups. I loved seeing Susanna Hoffs on the Tonight Show with Joan Rivers. Joan asked Susanna what her musical influences were. Susanna had the all-time greatest answer! She said: "The Three B's. Beatles, Byrds, and Buffalo Springfield!" GREAT ANSWER! Joan seemed completely baffled! I think Joan had heard of the Beatles but you could tell she had no idea who the other two groups were!

Funny.

4 out of 5 stars The Forgotten Bangles Effort - also the Best Effort!.......2004-06-11

Before their breakup in the late 80s, the Bangles released 3 albums. "All Over the Place" was the debut album of "The Bangles". This represents the pre-"Manic Monday" work by the Bangles. "All Over the Place" didn't have any Top 40 hits. In fact, this album is overshadowed by the hugely commercial "Different Light" and "Everything" albums, however this album should not be overlooked. This album represents as solid a debut album as anything and greatly benefits from the lack of commercialism on it. These tracks have some very nice lyrics and are complimented with superb instrumentation.

The Bangles aren't a band that just sings. The four female members each play an integral part to the music of the album. All four members do vocals and three members (Debbi Peterson, Vicki Peterson, Susanna Hoffs) actually do lead vocals (Michael Steele does background vocals). The members also play their own instruments: Hoffs and Vicki Peterson play guitars, Michael Steele plays Bass, and Debbi Peterson is the drummer. All songs except the Katrina and the Waves "Going Down to Liverpool" were written by the members of the band. While there is a perception that Susanna Hoffs is the lead vocalist, this really isn't the case on "All Over the Place". Vicki and Debbi do an outstanding job at lead vocals as well. Susanna is the lead vocalist on 4 tracks ("Hero Takes A Fall", "James", "Dover Beach", "He's Got a Secret"), Vicki is the lead vocalist on "All About You", "Restless", "Silent Treatment", Susanna and Vicki share leads on ("Tell Me") while Debbi and Vicki share lead vocals on "More Than Meets the Eye". The real surprise is that Debbi Peterson is the lead vocalist on the two strongest tracks on the album - "Live" and "Going Down to Liverpool". I think Debbi's contributions are as solid as any of the other members of the band.

This CD contains 11 tracks but the 11 tracks total only about 31+ minutes of music. Eight of the 11 songs are under three minutes while "Dover Beach" is the longest track at 3:48. This is kind of a double-edged sword on the collection. The quartet does a great job at making the most of the short song - you won't feel there is any wasted time. But you also get the feeling that some of the songs could have been longer. Many of the songs have an "underground" feel to it - they are catchy songs and songs that you hear in a coffee house. Although they have an 80s feel, they clearly lack the "pop" element and commercialism of songs you would hear on "80s Hit" radio. Most of the songs are up-tempo and have a fast beat - only the finale "More than Meets the Eye" (which is the weakest track) would really qualify as a slow song.

The Bangles strength is some of the great harmonies and background vocals produced by the quartet. This will also be the strength of this collection. "Live" is the best example of this. While Debbi does a great job at cranking out the lead vocals, the harmonic background vocals are solid as any. "Going Down to Liverpool", "Silent Treatment", "All About You", "Hero Takes a Fall", and "Dover Beach" are other highlights at some of the great background vocals. For the fans of Susanna Hoffs, you'll hear some of the trademark vocals you when she sings lines such as "look out - hear it comes again" on "Hero Takes a Fall". When I hear her sing that, I can almost envision the famous eye motion she did in the video for a later song they did - "Walk Like An Egyptian". Speaking of "Walk Like an Egyptian", the song "Silent Treatment" has some chords in it that remind me of the song (but I wouldn't say it sounds a lot like it).

The liner notes are disappointing with one exception. The good thing about the liner notes is that it tells who is the lead singer on each of the tracks. The bad news is that the lyrics aren't included (at least in the version I have). The songwriting credits are on the actual disc itself. A photo collage is included of the members of the band. This CD also shows the members of the band on the cover sitting in a living room type warehouse room. The CD also lists Miles Copeland (who worked and produced the Police) as part of the management team for the band.

One interesting personal note. I met the Bangles in Las Vegas and actually had a chance to talk with them. I mentioned how much I liked "All Over the Place" and all of the members were greatly appreciative for pointing out what is probably their least known album and noted to me how proud they were of this piece of work. They should be proud of it - this is a winner.

5 out of 5 stars Rainy Day Music Indeed!.......2003-08-08

The reason why this album is so clever is that though recorded in the 80's it sounds nothing like the 1980's. If you remember that back then the airwaves abounded with Culture CLub, Duran Duran, Human League, Eurythmics, the Police you can see why the Bangles had nothing to do with the 80's. Except that they were women in a rock band. Since the Bangles, how many female rock bands (not pop vocal groups like the Spice Girls) have hit the Top Ten? How many have had the same success as the Bangles? This album has everything that was great about 60's music - though now written from a woman's point of view. Their harmonies (such as Live and Dover Beach) were immaculate, their lyrics sharp and witty (unfortunately their later original songs all lacked the punch and attitude of the songs here), their playing not great but adequate. They were a garage band after all, not supposed to be virtouso material. They harken back to the mid 60's in America and Britain when young people - however untalented - believed they could pick up a guitar and play and hundreds of garage bands were formed. Totally unpretentious, bursting with energy. In a world of MTV, million dollar videos and the great corporate machines that handle talent today, it's refreshing to hear the Bangles and think of a time when songs were this hip and this good. "Silent Treatment," "James", "Hero Takes a Fall" all written by Vicki Peterson and Sue Hoffs are some of the best tracks. It's a shame that their later "hits" were all covers because Peterson especially can write really good, well-crafted songs. The Bangles were aware that the power chord, the three guitar and drums combo, were the basic backbone of rock and because of this, like the Ramones, they could continue playing their music for decades since they weren't bound to a particular trend or sound. This is a must-have album!
