Mississippi John Hurt recorded 13 country-blues songs for the Okeh Electric Records company in 1928. Then he vanished. Actually, he never went anywhere. Indeed, he never strayed from his hometown of Avalon, Mississippi. He simply put the guitar down. It was the Great Depression, times were tough, money was scarce, and he needed to work. Nearly 30 years later, a blues enthusiast tracked him down, took him back to Washington, D.C., and suddenly Mississippi John's musical career resumed as quickly as it had finished. He recorded again, but these first songs from the late 1920s--with John's melancholy voice and hypnotic guitar playing at its most inspired--are his greatest musical accomplishments. --Percy KeeganCustomer Reviews:

Mellifluous early blues recordings!.......2006-09-04
As to the recordings themselves, they are probably the sweetest sounding, most mellifluous early delta/country blues I have ever heard. John Hurt may not have had the well-known name of a Robert Johnson or Son House, but these recordings have had their influence in their own way. The song Stack O' Lee penned by Hurt became an R&B hit in 1950 (as Stack-A-Lee) for New Orleans pianist Archibald, and also became a rock-and-roll hit in 1958 for Lloyd Price (as Stagger Lee).
It should be noted that after Hurt recorded these songs, he went back to work in his hometown of Avalon, MS. Because this was an out-of the-way town, few passed through it, and because of this Hurt was influenced by few outside artists of the day. What we wind up with on this album is the heart and soul of John Hurt.......and it is magnificent.

group of early music he sang. I like it very much, and I bought it as a gift for a family member never thinking I would get "hooked" on him as much as the family member was. This open my eyes to some wonderful music. I'm glad I bought for someone else and got to listen to it myself.

John McGlinn's sprawling, monumental three-CD set is about all the Show Boat any listener could ever ask for. In an obvious labor of love, McGlinn reconstructs the show as it ran on opening night, November 15, 1927, including every song, the original orchestrations, and all underscored dialogue. The most significant restoration is the dark choral number "Mis'ry's Comin' Aroun'," as Show Boat's serious subject matter helped establish its place as the most important turning point in the history of American musical theater. McGlinn also adds an appendix that includes songs cut before opening night and every song subsequently written for the show's many productions, most notably the love duet "I Have the Room Above Her," written for the 1936 film. (The recording is also available in a one-disc reduction called the "Broadway Show Album.")Rest assured this 221-minute blockbuster is not just dry scholarship; it's also terrific listening, with McGlinn conducting a dynamic London Sinfonietta and a strong cast including Frederica von Stade as Magnolia, Jerry Hadley as Ravenal, Teresa Stratas as the tragic Julie, Bruce Hubbard as the worldly wise Joe, Karla Burns as Queenie, and David Garrison and Paige O'Hara as the comic couple Frank and Ellie. And of course the songs by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II are among the most glorious ever written: "Ol' Man River," "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man," "Make Believe," "Why Do I Love You," "Bill," "You Are Love," and "Life upon the Wicked Stage." Also included are exhaustive production notes, a history of the show, a detailed synopsis, and a libretto. John McGlinn's Show Boat is a staggering achievement and a recording for the ages. --David Horiuchi

The Best American Musical .......2007-07-29
An American Treasure.......2007-03-03
I defy anyone to come up with another Broadway production that has three songs in a row better than Make Believe, Ol' Man River and Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man (West Side Story's Maria, America and Tonight are the best three in a row of a movie musical) and it's a shame that no movie version of Showboat can compare to this version. The first act is full of songs that are as good as any ever sung on a stage and I can't think of another production with a first act that compete against the big 3 plus Cotton Blossom, Where's The Mate For Me, Life On The Wicked Stage, Till Good Luck Comes My Way, Misry's Comin' Aroun', You are Love, Act One finale and Why Do I Love You?. You just don't want to have the music stop.
If you don't like opera you won't like this version. Sung the way Kern and Hammerstein wrote them, you can't help but feel the operatic nature of these songs. Tough noogies because Showboat is above all an opera disguised as a Broadway play and no sweetening should be allowed.
The four leads are all superb, Frederica von Stade as Nola especially. The booklet contains the complete libretto and allows a different way to appreciate the music.
If you buy just one version of Showboat you need this one. If you have other versions of Showboat you need this one. As a matter of fact, anyone with ears to hear needs this version. A true American treasure.
DON'T DESPAIR. IT'S BEEN REISSUED!!!!!.......2006-11-16
Thank you, EMI.
I would hope other labels would follow suit and remaster and reissue other examples of classic American musical theater. It would be a pity if our children, grandchildren, and future generations were unable to savor "110 in the Shade" or "Little Mary Sunshine" or . . . . . . . . . (fill in the blanks.)

This CD set is also useful because it can be listened to and experienced without headphones. It's nice to have the choice of different brainwaves, and the ability to let it play in the background while I go about other things. (Others of his CDs require headphones, lying down, etc.)
Highly recommended.

Evidence of the strange genius of Mississippi bluesman Tommy Johnson is limited to 17 recordings from two late-1920s sessions. It is the first of these, for the Victor Company, that produced the recordings upon which Johnson's lofty reputation rests. Sung in a husky falsetto, somewhere between an African field holler and an Alpine yodel, "Cool Drink of Water Blues" stands atop a pinnacle in the richly inventive Delta blues tradition with younger cousin Robert Johnson's "Hellhound on My Trail" and Skip James's "Devil Got My Woman." "Canned Heat Blues" is a bittersweet paean to the older Johnson's penchant for imbibing tins of jellied kerosene, and was a modest hit in that era's "race record" market. Also notable from his 1928 session were the influential "Maggie Campbell Blues," "Big Road Blues," and "Big Fat Mama Blues," while the recently discovered Paramount session was remarkable for "Slidin' Delta" and "I Wonder to Myself." --Alan GreenbergCustomer Reviews:
The Complete Recordings Of Tommy Johnson.......2006-11-10
The Complete recorded works of Tommy Johnson is essential to all lovers of blues and American roots music.
Sadly Johnson only recorded 17 classic sided and they are all present on this collection. The sound qualitiy is also superior to previous releases of these tracks. If you only have a few Tommy Johnson tracks on various compilations, it is worth the price to have them all in chronological order as they are presented on this disc. You get to hear what a dynamic artist Johnson was and how he took the influence of Delta greats Charlie Patton and Ishmon Bracey, and even the falseto vocal stlylings of Jimmy Rodgers, and turned them into something totally unique and timeless.
A must have.
-Devon Wendell
As good as it gets........2006-05-12
This Document Records compilation is an absolute necessity for any serious collector of the blues, and particularly of early blues. There were many great bluesmen named Johnson: Robert, Blind Willie and Lonnie to name the best known. However, if you can only take one "Johnson" record down that Big Road, Tommy's is the one to take.
Essential!.......2004-04-12
Thomas Johnson was born in 1896 down in the Mississippi Delta, and though his name is not as well known as those of Charlie Patton, Son House, and Robert Johnson (no relation), he was one of the most important prewar bluesmen, and certainly one of the most talented.
He was also an uncontrolled alcoholic, and the fact that he lived to see sixty is something of a miracle. His "Canned Heat Blues" is certainly autobiographical, and his contemporaries have told about Johnson straining shoe polish through a slice of white bread in order to extract the alcohol.
But his music is something to behold. Johnson sounds totally immersed in it, his voice possessing an eerie quality enhanched by his occational falsetto moans, and this disc includes the original versions of "Maggie Campbell Blues", "Big Road Blues", and "Cool Drink Of Water Blues" (later recorded by Howlin' Wolf as "I Asked For Water (she gave me gasoline)").
Johnson plays alone on a few songs, but on most of these seventeen sides (which comprise his entire recorded legacy) he is backed by one or more additional musicians, most often a second guitarist. The first eight sides, Tommy Johnson's Victor sides from 1928, boast amazing sound quality...much (much!) better than Charlie Patton's or Son House's contemporary recordings, they're clean and crisp with just a little static, and every phrase and every instrument is clearly heard. Johnson was a talented and quite original guitar player, and it is a delight to be able to hear him so well.
The Paramount sides, on the other hand, are...well, Paramount sides. Much inferior in sound quality to the Victor sides, they are nevertheless well worth a listen, particularly "Alcohol And Jake Blues" and the battered "Lonesome House Blues".
On the best of these songs, Johnson's voice is positively frightening, and his "Cool Drink Of Water" is the sound of pure despair. This is some of the starkest, most powerful music you'll ever hear.
One of the Most Unique of the Early Blues Players.......2004-02-10
The Victor tracks are worth the price of the CD.......2003-06-18

She Boops to Conquer.......2007-01-28
Helen Kane wasn't just a songstress; she was a comedienne. Like Sophie Tucker and Mae West, she made light of sex and sex appeal. But if Tucker and West were parodying the all-knowing and mature woman of the world, Kane's target was alleged innocent who feigns naivete but knows quite a bit more than she lets on. There's more eroticism and sexuality in one string of Kane's "boop-boop-a-doops" than in all the jigglings, gyrations, and "wardrobe malfunctions" that constitute many a singer's modus operandi today.
All of Kane's standards are here, including jovially randy gems such as "That's My Weakness Now," and "I Wanna Be Bad." The five tunes from her comeback attempt in the '50s lack the old zest, but they're still fascinating. The mind nearly boggles that Helen is taking Mel Blanc's role in "I Taut I Taw a Puddy Tat," years after the Fleischer's finagled their way out of paying Helen any royalties over Betty Boop. Overall, the newer beat doesn't jibe well with Helen's sound, but her work is still interesting, and she acquits herself nicely with her reprise of "I Wanna Be Loved By You."
The overall quality of the package, from sound to liner notes, is excellent. Helen Kane may not have won a victory over Betty Boop and her creators, but in the long run, she has prevailed.
Helen charms, croons and squeaks her way into nostalgic hearts........2006-09-02
Every song in this collection is a gem, each one offering something clever and new. Helen takes the lyrics and makes them purely her own, providing her unique twist on each verse while taking each song to a new plateu. Thus, no track is unintersting. On the contrary, the listener will find themselves anxious for the next track to begin just to hear what she'll do next.
It was said in one review or another that Helen used her signature "boop boop a doop" ad nauseum. While she does indeed import the classic phrase many times throughout the cd, it's usage is usually subtle and not used in every song. The instances where she includes the legendary words fit quite well in the flow of the tune. At times it's done quickly, like a quaint little poke to remind you who you're listening to, and has passed before you realize what hit you. In other cases, she changes up the words, extends them, creatively re-arranges them to form a completely new word and sound that dances, blends, and becomes one with the rythm.
All in all, a wonderful collection of a beautiful, talented woman from a bygone, golden era of hope and reckless abandon. I highly recommend it to anyone in love with the era and it's timeless, wonderful music.

Wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-02-03
and I found a 7 33 r.p.m lp box set called "These Were our Songs The Late 30's" It it had a 1936 song on it called "There's A Small Hotel" by Paul Whiteman Vocals sung by Durelle Alexander.
(Paul Whiteman did not sing it, Durelle Alexander did)
Durelle Alexander sounds just like Helen Kane (a.k.a Betty Boop) So I got on my computor and searched many diffrent websites looking for a Durelle Alexander cd, cassete tape, and even records! Unforetonantly, I found none. But I knew she sang just like Betty Boop did in the cartoons I wathced, so I got on my computor, and typed in Betty Boop, And found Helen Kane tried to soo Max Fleicher (creator of Betty Boop Cartoons)for stealing her voice for Betty Boop. So I got on amazon and found this.
SHE SOUNDS JUST LIKE DURELLE ALEXANDER!!! I LOVE THIS CD!!!!!!!!!
A little Helen goes a long way.......2005-04-26
Like all singers who became famous for their catchphrase, Helen browbeats the listener with a Boop-boop-a-doop over and over, until I, at least, started to cringe. And like many others who had a brief flash of fame, she tried too hard for too long, and then attempted a misguided comeback that has all the charm of an wizened old gal with long blond hair and a miniskirt. Though I'm glad I got to hear what she sounded like when she tried that return, I now cut the CD off before those tracks arrive.
Yet there is genuine charm here as well. Helen could sing, and on a few, she nails them dead-on. The coy, the wry, the slightly wicked is all here, and all well done. But this is too much cuteness. Like a Shirley Temple film festival, one gets weary of marshmallows and wants something with a bit more heft.

Big Bill's Best Box...3.5 stars.......2004-11-30
I think the idea of a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is ridiculous to begin with, but if Broonzy isn't in it (maybe he is, I don't know), then it's even more ridiculous than I thought. Broonzy had a much larger stylistic impact upon rock & roll than did, say, Robert Johnson, who I would imagine is probably already in there for no other reason than Clapton and Keith Richards can't seem to ever shut up about him. Detach yourself from the hype and actually just listen to the musics of Broonzy and Johnson. There is nothing of Johnson's sound or style that widely found its way into rock & roll. Now listen to quite alot of Broonzy's music. Much of Broonzy's music isn't even so much blues as it is rhythm & blues... the very foundation of the later Chicago blues sound, and early R&R sounds. Water down the lyrics, add some horns or an electric guitar, speed it up a bit, make it 25 years later and some of Big Bill's music is 1950s rock & roll.
Not that I give or take two doo-doos of merit to something because it did or did not influence rock, but seeing as how so many classic-rock fans are always regurgitating the same stuff they've read in 50 Clapton interviews, it annoys me how many blues-rock fans will go on and on about how Robert Johnson was the greatest blues musician ever, as well as some sort of genius proto-architect of rock, when this guy (Broonzy) that most of those same people have never heard, clearly, at times, sounds like a main influence for everyone from Little Richard to Johnny Cash & the Tennessee Two. I'm not slighting Robert's music here, just saying that if you believe the hype, he seemed to do everything but create the earth and sky.
As for Broonzy's music itself, this is a blessing and a curse. Sometimes he does indeed fall into many of the repetitious and bland pitfalls that became the hallmark of the famed post-war "Chicago Blues sound" that oftentimes bores me to tears. That is certainly not all the music in this great box, though. And of course some of his music does dig deep. It's not all just sex and fun.
I feel special mention must be made of Black Bob, Broonzy's longtime pianist. He is as much the star of this box as is Broonzy himself.
As for JSP's work on this box, it is lovely as usual. This is the best sounding Big Bill I have heard. My 3.5 stars don't slight JSPs fine transfers, it's just that as much as I like Big Bill, I personally have never elevated him to the same level as the Memphis Minnies, Lonnie Johnsons, Skip James', Blind Willie McTells, etc... of the world. If you're a huge Big Bill fan, or a first-timer just looking to check him out, this is as fine a box (and price) as you will ever find. I've had this box for 4 or 5 months now and it has yet to escape my player for more than a couple days.
****ý.......2004-02-20
Big Bill Broonzy was one of the major links between country blues and the urban Chicago variety, and artists like Memphis Slim and Muddy Waters recorded entire LPs of his material.
The sound on these five discs is not great, but you probably won't find any better-sounding Big Bill-sides from the 20s and 30s, and this is certainly no second-rate compilation, in spite of the relatively low price and the cartoonish design of the box. On the contrary, it is a well-annotated, carefully remastered overview of the music of Big Bill Broonzy in his prime.

THE SKILLET LICKERS VOLUME 2: 1927-1928.......2007-08-06
Bald Mountain Caruso!.......2005-04-08
James Gideon "Gid" Tanner was born at Thomas Bridge, near Monroe, in 1885 and spent most of his adult life in Gwinnett County, where he made a living as a farmer. He learned to play the fiddle as a teenager and became known in local circles for his prowess with the instrument. As a young man he was a regular participant at the Georgia Old-Time Fiddlers' Conventions, held annually in Atlanta between 1913 and 1935. He won the state fiddling championship in 1928. Tanner was known among musicians and convention audiences as a crowd pleaser. He was not only a fiddler but also a comedian noted for his stereotypical imitations and a singer with legendary range. Tanner allegedly knew the words and music to more than 2,000 songs. The favorite among his audiences was "I'm Satisfied," which he sang in alternating falsetto and bass registers. When Tanner sang the song at the fiddlers' conventions, newspapers reported that he "brought down the house" and was forced to repeat the song several times "before the audience would let him go."
On April 17, 1926, the Skillet Lickers recorded eight songs for the Columbia record label in an Atlanta studio. During the next eight years various combinations of Atlanta-area musicians joined Tanner to record more than 100 songs under the Skillet Lickers name. Besides McMichen and Puckett, the Skillet Lickers at one time or another included Ted Hawkins (mandolin, fiddle), Bert Layne (fiddle), Fate Norris (banjo, harmonica), Hoke Rice (guitar), Lowe Stokes (fiddle), Arthur Tanner (banjo, guitar), and Mike Whitten (guitar). With such songs as "Bully of the Town," "Pass Around the Bottle and We'll All Take a Drink," and "Soldier's Joy," these records were well received by fans of old-time string band music, and they sold well. The band's biggest-selling record was "Down Yonder," recorded at its last session in 1934, with Tanner's son, Gordon, playing the lead fiddle.
In addition to traditional folk music, fiddle tunes, and novelty songs, the Skillet Lickers recorded a series of skits in which humorous dialogue, interspersed with snatches of familiar songs and tunes, was the main feature. Called "rural drama records," these skits, as their titles indicate, recounted stories about such topics as "A Corn Licker Still in Georgia," "The Medicine Show," and "Kickapoo Joy Juice."
Although Tanner's recording career ended in 1934, he remained active as an entertainer until shortly before his death. During his last years he performed on stage and radio and entered fiddlers' contests. He won his last first-place trophy at the age of seventy-one.
At his death in 1960, just three weeks shy of his seventy-fifth birthday, Tanner left behind a living legacy of his work as a musician. His grandson Phil Tanner and Phil's son, Russell, both fiddlers, are still actively performing in an old-time string band that retains the name Skillet Lickers. Four generations of Tanners have kept Georgia's old-time music alive for more than a hundred years. Tanner was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 1988."
