5 out of 5 stars Classic 60s Irish dance album.......2005-05-07

The title, "Irish Traditional Fiddle Music," might give the impression that this is a disc of solo fiddling, but it isn't. It is 100% ceili band music (music for dancing). The band in question is the Kilfenora Ceili band. There were a number of great players in this line up, but I can't remember who they are (the original LP listed the group and members). One member that I do recall is fiddler Tommy Peoples, who you might be able to pick out in the background on some tracks if you are familiar with his sound.
Although it's great to see this classic album reissued, it is pitiful that the group and its members are not listed.

Recommended to fans of ceili band music and classic traditional Irish albums.

4 out of 5 stars For Serious Irish Music Fans.......2001-02-15

Get this CD if you want to enjoy the spirit of real Irish music. Although this is released on one of those 'cheapskate' labels (perhaps because it is...) the rousing sprit of these bands comes through whatever deficiencies are inherent is ths kind of a collection. I mean, there are snare drums and saxophones on some of the cuts! But the lilting feeling and dancing energy is there. I liked the 2 or 3 vocal numbers a little less than the jigs and reels, but they were not unlistenable, and did not send me racing for the remote!

It is too bad there are not more sound samples - Track no.8: Austin Tierney's/I'm Waiting for You/The Boys of Ballisodare/The Five Mile Chase is wonderful. I liked this recording, and my Irish music-playing friends did, too! Ultimately, I prefer something like this to the typical post-Riverdance scholck.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing debut....Natalie's first could be her best even today........2007-03-06

9 months after "discovering" Natalie and Cape Breton music I finally went ahead and bought Natalie's first release, Fit as a Fiddle. Like "My Roots are Showing", this CD sizzles with wonderful Cape Breton traditional music at its finest. Why does Natalie make this music leap out at you when so many have played it before?

I'm still trying to figure out why I've become so enamored with Cape Breton music and Natalie's fiddle--friends and family are equally puzzled.

To try to answer the question above, I think what Natalie brings to this music like few others have done before is this. Her love for both this music and the fiddle enable her to play with a passion and respect for the magic and true beauty that is Cape Breton Island music. The notes leap off her fiddle with love and a commitment to a style of music that Natalie seems determined to share with us knowing, like me, that the mere hearing of it will evoke a passion for it like her's. There is a confidence here too. Even at the tender young age she recorded this CD, you can feel even then that every note is played with a certainty that it is exactly the way it's supposed to sound. I'm amazed at how her music affects me, and I'm probably not alone!

As for this CD, her debut, it surprises and delights. You can hear the talent and the passion even then. Amazing...

I love the way Natalie MacMaster plays the fiddle, and this cd shows Natalie at her best. Except that hearing her live in concert really shows Natalie at her best. My wife and I have all of Natalie's cds and we rank her as probably our favorite artist of ANY genre. Although some of the more modern tunes that Natalie tries on her other cds are quite interesting, the traditional Cape Breton/Scottish fiddle tunes of "Fit as a Fiddle" show off her virtuoso style and complete command of the fiddle. The tunes are lovely and they make you want to dance, even if like me, you have two left feet. I love this cd!

I bought this as a gift for my son, but I highly recommend the "Fiddlesticks" to anyone, no matter which CD it is. We really enjoy their music.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Irish Fiddle Festival Recording.......2005-12-04

If you want to hear Irish fiddle by itself or in combination with other fiddles, or wish to practice along with a strong recorded fiddle lead, this is a remarkable CD. When you are playing a strong and only lead in a tune, it takes exceptional skill to not make the little errors that get missed playing in musical groups or jam sessions. This CD demonstrates this uncommon precision.

I have spent many hours and drank more than a few gallons of the good stuff to lubricate my playing practicing guitar, bouzouki and bodhran to these tracks. This CD was recorded in 1991 at the "Fiddlesticks Festival" organized by the Traditional Music Society of University College Cork, and includes well known fiddle players within Ireland, such as the legendary Tommy Peoples. There is also the lovely Mairead ni Mhaonaigh and Ciaran Tourish of Altan contributing several tracks. The well knowned Glackin family of Dublin is represented by brothers Seamus and Kevin. I would especially recommend the first track duet, "The Boys of Malin, The Gravel Walks" reels for amazing double lead and counterpoint playing. The last track is very spirited, the typical everyone on stage at the end of a concert, "The Wise Maid, McCloud's Reel, The Boys of Malin."

If you love the old tunes in the old way with "naked fiddle" or the small groups that would play in pubs and at family gatherings, you will love this CD.

5 out of 5 stars The fiddle at its best!.......2005-08-05

The best fiddle music CD out there. Very real, with live performances and no new-agey extras.

5 out of 5 stars Toe Tapping.......2004-01-27

5 out of 5 stars Acoustic stringed instrument lovers, take note!.......2005-10-20

My first introduction to Al Petteway and Amy White was the "acoustic Journey" album that I received by donating to National Public Radio. As an acoustic guitarist myself, I really appreciated the great talent and wonderful arrangements. Curious, I checked Amazon.com for more of their music and was attracted to "Land of the Sky" which focused more on southern Appalachian folk music, albeit in a more stylized form. Still, I found it very soothing and at times, emotional, especially the intrumental version of "Shady Grove". I also bought the "Holiday Sampler" because it's a wonderful alternative to the traditional music-box albums I normally play at Christmas time. I'd give it three thumbs up if I had them!

5 out of 5 stars Both original and traditional compositions of mountain melodies .......2005-08-07

When the Scots, Irish, Welch, and English settlers populated the mountain valleys, hills, and mountains of Southern Appalachia, they brought their music with them as an integral part of their culture. In Land Of The Sky, Al Petteway and Amy White deftly collaborate to memorably perform within that Southern Appalachian music tradition and heritage for the benefit and delight of a new generation of listeners with recorded performances that include both original and traditional compositions of mountain melodies played on acoustic guitars, the mandolin, the Celtic harp, the banjo, fiddles, the Irish Bouzouki, Fretless Bass, percussion, and vocals. Entertaining listening with a total running time of 53:06, the fourteen pieces comprising this outstanding and recommended CD for personal, music department, and community library New Age & Contemporary Folk Music collections include Black Bear's Picnic (4:16); Shady Grove (4:39); Across the Blue Mountains (4:11); Bobcat in the Brambles (3:03); Sunny Day (3:08); Pretty Polly (4:00); A Walk in the Woods (4:20); Western Highlands (3:30); Wayfaring Stranger (4:33); The Cuckoo (2:42); Swannanoa (4:44); Ryan's Rambles (4:05); Trillium Waltz (2:33); and the title piece, Land of the Sky (2:58).

5 out of 5 stars A fan from Arlington, VA........2005-05-05

While I do not consider myself an expert in acoustic guitar music, I have over the years collected and listened to a lot of such music. Like most everyone, I know what I like, and I like the music of Al Petteway and Amy White a great deal.

This CD may be their best. It is musically rich and as all are of their CDs, it is innovative. A good example of that is their version of the standard folk song, "Pretty Polly".

There is not a bad cut on the CD, and like other great artists, the CD's theme of an Appalachian journey not only holds together, it works quite well. I have listened to this CD over and over and find something new every time. This is one to buy and keep.

The original trio was founded Kevin Burke (Ireland), Christian le Maître (Brittany), and Johnny Cunningham (Scotland). Cunningham¹s untimely death in late 2003 left the ensemble heartbroken and artistically in the lurch, so it is a pleasure to see them back in action. The new member is André Brunet, a Quebec-born fiddler whose searing double-stops, bouncy rhythmic aplomb and high spirits have helped Burke, le Maître and guitarist/fiddler Ged Foley to, well, play on. Taped during live performances in Portland, Oregon, the twelve tracks contain tunes from each player¹s native country plus another from Israel. Each of the Celtic sources offer a profusion of dance styles and reflective slow airs and these are well represented. But a stately interpretation of Carolan's Concerto, in which ancient Irish harp music mixes with baroque compositional styles, and Leaving Brittany, a piece composed by Cunningham about wishing safe passage to departed friends, are particularly memorable. --Christina Roden

5 out of 5 stars Amazing energy.......2006-11-30

This CD contains some old favorites (Itzikel & O'Carolan's Concerto) as well as Andre Brunet's amazingly energetic La Belle Catherine/Le Step a Ti-Phonse/Reel a Toto. I saw them perform recently in Somerville, Massachusetts. Andre's percussion (foot stomping) is brilliant and to watch him is truly exhausting. That energy and joie de vivre comes across on the CD. This is the CD to give to potential new fans - as Kevin would say - you can do your Christmas shopping early.

5 out of 5 stars Spread the Love.......2006-03-03

This is an awesome awesome awesome CD! I loaned it to someone who loaned it to someone else who loaned it to someone else and I can't seem to get it back. I'm probably going to have to order another. Oh well, at least I'm contributing to the betterment of society!

4 out of 5 stars A fine fiddle.......2005-04-21

The Celtic Fiddle Festival is a live ensemble comprising Kevin Burke, Christian Lemaire and new member Andre Bruent on fiddles with Ged Foley on guitar and fiddle. This album is their dedication to one of the founding members of the band, fiddler Johnny Cunningham, who sadly passed away in December 2003. Johnny had a special warmth in his playing and his passing was a great loss to the traditional folk scene.

The tracks chosen on this the band's fourth album derive from a wide range of sources and include traditional tunes from Quebec, Brittany, Eastern Europe and Ireland, and tunes written by Johnny Cunningham, Jerry Holland and Turlough O'Carolan among others.

It's a lively lyrical affair jam-packed with medleys and airs that display the immense talent and solid partnership of these great musicians. Despite the instrumentation being rather one-sided, it works well and doesn't really leave one wishing there were other instruments as well.

The recording quality is clear and full, and the high relative recorded level of the music means the audience is totally unobtrusive.

4 out of 5 stars The best since the first one...........2005-03-18

... and while I have a bias towards the first (cf. the credits), I have to say as objectively as I can that this is as good as that one. CFF is a live act, and this line-up represents the fourth version of the ensemble. Out of the starting gate, Burke, Cunningham and LeMaitre were quite competitive (ask Pete the engineer or L.Fetters) and that made for an incredible evening of music, especially with John McGann on board. Having nearly resulted in multiple homicide, though, thebaton was passed to Natalie MacMaster, Brian McNeil and Martin Hayes with Tony McManus on board with guitar. That was the 5 star line-up. Unfortunately, they were not recorded, one of the rare vapour-locks in Green Linnet's history. Recognizing a franchise when they saw one, B & C & L reformed with Ged Foley, late of England's House Band on board for the 6 string rhythm work. The ensuing CDs from this line up gradually became more showcases for party-pieces and grandstanding than evoking anything inspirationally creative.
Death has a way of changing that. Cunningham passed tragically at a younger age than his countenance would suggest. It was a loss that took from Scots' music its very best fiddle player. He had been the one who jump started the renaissance of the tradition, much as Burke had been there with the Bothy Band as Irish music found a new life. But the fire in this line-up was fairly dim. Only LeMaitre seemed willing and able to reconsider what his tradition could articulate. All the same, Johnny's loss was profound.
This new configuration brings La Bottine Sourriant's Andre Brunet to the lineup, and brilliantly underscores the Breton-Quebecois connection. Burke isn't so much relegated to the sidelines as actually given an opportunity to stretch again as he hasn't in ages. He's terrific. The chemistry here works toward LeMaitre's strong suit and he takes the reins as he always has in concert, with subtle and supple power and grace. Brunet takes the melancholis soul of Le Maitre and adds the joie you'd find in LBS or Ad Vielle Que Pourra or any street musician in Vieux Quebec worth his sel. Foley holds down the rhythm with assured skill.
Playing before Burke's hometown audience in Portland also brings out the best in the three of them, and one wonders how the dynamic might shift were the recording made in Aylmer, Richelieu or Quimper. No matter, the goods are delivered here, and along with Altan's LOCAL GROUND, this is a very welcome release during the Yanks' green sweater season.

5 out of 5 stars Bullock is a first class musician of breathtaking ability.......2004-06-29

I was familiar with Robin's work with the eclectic acoustic trio, Helicon, and I even had the great honor of his musical accompaniment at a local art fair gig once. Knowing about his mastery of many instruments, I've been wanting to get this album of his for quite some time. Robin plays nine different instruments on "Midnight Howl." Steve Bloom's percussion is right on, and we also hear some expert bodhran, wooden flute and Celtic harp from Myron Bretholz, Chris Norman and Sue Richards, respectively. No slouches there! The CD starts with a lively "John MacKenzie's Fancy" that imparts a rhythmic intensity that is very powerful. Throughout the journey, he follows his quick paced romps with leisurely musical strolls. Arrangements are well thought out, and it's a true pleasure to hear the genesis of 8-minute numbers like "Jaybird Suite" and "Ash Grove Suite." Robin Bullock is a first class musician of breathtaking ability. (Joe Ross, Roseburg, OR.)

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!!.......2003-04-28

I have become a huge Robin Bullock fan, and this CD "Midnight Howl" is just the latest of his works that I have aquired. These tunes are a beautiful blending of a little Celtic, a little "Hillbilly", a little Bluegrass, and a lot of pride. This is such a beautiful work, I would have to place it close to one of my favorites. I believe, if you like string music with a down home flavor, you should give this work a listen.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2000-02-02

I discovered Robin Bullock when he toured a couple years ago with Celtic accordian madman John Whelan. Bullock is an outstanding musician. I had to have the CD that included a song called "For Ireland I'd Not Tell Her Name." That turned out to be "Midnight Howl." A beautiful song, as is every piece on this CD. If you enjoy Celtic and traditional instrumental music suitable for relaxing and dreaming on a snowy or rainy day, don't miss this recording!

I was researching my own name online, and came across the Liz Carroll web site. I, Liz Carroll am also a musician, and from Boston. Perhaps irish musicians run in the family? I am proud to share my name with the artist of this amazing CD.. keep up the good work Liz! :)

5 out of 5 stars Liz knows her Biz.......1999-11-13

Have had,and now lost,2 copies of this amazing CD.Although she has grown in stature and noteriety, this early recording of hers(Sans Trian) is by all means Liz at her blazing best. A true living legend of the fiddle and tune master of Trad,,bar none.

5 out of 5 stars Liz Carroll is an evil genius!!.......1999-09-17

A truly innovative interpreter and composer of Irish tunes. Not for the faint at heart. Piano accompanist Marty Fahey should win a Congressional Medal of Honor for going into some of these melodic minefields with her. It's tasteful as hell, though. Rewards repeated listenings!

3 out of 5 stars Nice violin, but not traditional.......2007-06-29

Very good violinist, but the tunes are a bit too classical sounding and not traditional sounding to my ear. Still nice to listen to for relaxing music, but if you're looking for a real Celtic sound, try a different fiddler...

5 out of 5 stars Great album from a wonderful fiddler.......2007-01-18

I really enjoy listening to this CD. The choice of tunes is a great combination of lively reels and more contemplative numbers. I've been lucky enough to see Florie Brown play several times over the years and it is always a pleasure. Her love for this kind of music really comes through. I highly recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys Celtic music.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Top of the line fiddle music.......2006-11-03

This record and its companion, "The Rover's Return," make up a set that is as fine as any collection of folk music on record. Anyone familiar with fiddling will know that the Cape Breton fiddlers are unexcelled. This pair of recordings has two huge advantages. First, it documents local old-time styles with particularly fine examples. Second, each record comes with a truly superb booklet--maybe "short book" would be better. The booklets provide deep histories and technical accounts of the styles, and biographies of the performers. Careful wording allows amazing amounts of information to be packaged in a small format. Also, the booklets are unashamedly partisan--the authors love the music and are advocates for it. How refreshingly preferable to the weasel-worded "everybody's nice" school of folk-music scholarship.
I am saddened that no one has seen fit to single out these recordings before. Reader, if you have the slightest interest in folk music, or violin music, buy these records. Even if your violin tastes run heavily to Bach and Vivaldi and you have never explored traditional folk music, you will love these records to distraction--if you can give yourself time to accommodate your ear to a unique, intricate, stunningly effective local style.
