Customer Reviews:
Just Amazing!.......2001-08-08
This ain't no disco, this ain't no fooling around. A welcome respite from thin syrupy synth-pop Rai. Orchestre National De Barbes traces fat grooves and dredges up some deep funk. Rhymically intense and melodically rich. Perhaps the best stuff I've heard all year. Racid Taha, Ali Hassan Kuban, Hassan Hakmoun fans tune it.
Well worth the wait.......2000-04-22
The hottest band on the planet proves it can deliver in the studio as well as onstage in "Poulina." It's a slightly different ONB lineup but the same tight, percussion-heavy ensemble sound heard on the earlier "En Concert." Guys, if you or your handlers are reading this: It's time for a U.S. tour.
Poulina-a great mix of North African "gnawa rhythms"........1999-11-13
"Orchestre National de Barbes-Poulina" (1999). If the cover looks familiar it is because it was used about 30 years ago by "The Youngbloods". This CD "Poulina" sounds more polished than their first one or perhaps they have just refined their act. I believe this is their second contribution, which is quite jazzy, with underlying Gnawa polyrhythms and a French fat horn section in the background. Track 2, "Poulina" has a neat reggae beat to it as well as jiving horn section. The next cut, "Lemouima" has a flowing keyboard sounding zourna or bagpipe which turns into a tight, jazzy number. If you like the "Gnawa: The Spiritmasters" then you will like this one. Track 5, "Touba" goes back to using traditional instruments (qareqeb or castanets, bendir or frame drum and oud) so a mix of gnawa rhythms along with ONB's French horn section. At times, the CD borrows from Manu Dibango's African jazz background and the Baobab Café sound of Senegal (I suppose that is because of the French musicians). Track 6, "Jabario" is a good example of this as half-way through the track they segue from the African jazz to the rhythms of the 'gnawa' percussive sounds-a nice touch. They try to sneak some al-Andaloos sounds on near the end of the CD, which is unfortunate. Keep the Iberian Peninsula out of this please. "Soudani" sounds like a cross between the Gnawa Spiritmasters and Manu Dibango on saxophone. If you like the unplugged sound of the gimbri then the final track of "Mariama" is for you. If you like the traditional sounds of Morocco then you should listen to "The Gnawa Spiritmasters" that was produced by Laswell a few years back. And, if you can keep up to the tempo of those drummers then you are a better percussionist than me!

Customer Reviews:
What a stunning range!.......2004-02-12
I am eternally grateful to my brother for introducing me to this exuberant, versatile, multi-talented group. The flavour of the tracks goes from reggae -- solid, non-cheesy reggae -- through various Arabic forms popular and traditional, even stopping in for some funk-rock on Lemouima. It sounds like they've assimilated influences from Brazil and the Caribbean too, but everything is so skilfully arranged and played that it holds together completely on its own.
If all the musicians aren't heavyweights, the superb production sure makes them sound like it. This album is brilliant, and more fun each time I listen to it.
a stunning amalgam.......2002-07-17
Wow. This CD just knocks me out, especially since the live album, while interesting, doesn't come close to capturing the energy and tight ensemble playing of this incredible band (the converse is usually true of live albums). The production is top-notch, and the wide variety of music simply bristles with electricity. Standouts are hard to name, but "Poulina" has a great, almost-reggae groove mixed with outstanding massed vocal harmonies. "Lemouima" may be the best track...an exotic slice of the desert that belongs on any dance mix tapes/CDs. "Nabina" is a (too) short piece that features wonderful vocal harmonies that almost echo Gregorian chant. Barbes is the African expatriot suburb of Paris, and the band was formed from the incredible array of musicians found there. This brings in a truly enormous variety of North African influences to the CD, captured with spot-on production and hinting at French influences (presumably both from the Parisian location and from the long-standing French presence in North Africa and its influence on music there). Traditional instruments mix with great horn charts, kit drums, electric bass, mandolin, and keyboards to form a wonderful synthesis that is exactly what is interesting and unifying about world music.
I can't wait for the next release from these guys. I'd love to see them live, but what are the odds of them coming to Austin, Texas....?
Buy this CD!
This goup is fantastic!.......2001-08-11
I bought this cd after I listen them in a concert in my city. They ara incredible in direct, with a enormous energy and dance. They are from a city suburb(islamic of course) in Paris. People who likes arabic rhythms, it would like this fantastic cd. Songs I think are the best ( that's difficult): Poulina, Lemouima, Jabario, and Soudami. Well in fact all cd is very good.I'm waiting next record.
