{ the group }
Cascade Folk Trio represents the collaboration of three of Armenian musics most talented vocalists, Arman Aghajanyan , Ohanna Mtghyan and Armen Papikyan. Already acclaimed individually as artists, their union has resulted in the creation of one of the most popular musical groups in todays worldwide Armenian Diaspora. The trio, based in New York and Los Angeles, has created a musical force whose chemistry, stage presence, unique image and fresh interpretation of Armenian music have not previously been witnessed in the music world.
In 1999, Aghajanyan, Mtghyan and Papikyan joined forces in New York City to form the Trio. They named themselves after their favorite district in their hometown of Yerevan Cascade. While Cascade Folk Trios music can be categorized as folk, all three members have been formally trained in popular and jazz music at Yerevans College of Jazz and Pop Music. The growth of interest in their more traditional roots began while living in New York. Although receiving inspiration from all the diverse rhythms, melodies and beats of the City, the group found relief for their homesickness through Armenian music. As a result of these two inspirations, Cascade created a unique sound that utilized Jazz, Latin, R&B and Soul Music to illuminate their native Armenian Folk. In essence, theyve brought the melodies of their beloved Armenia and set them to the rhythms of the City.
{ the creative process }
The trio considers its creative process a collaboration among equals. Based on their overall chemistry and individual talents, each member possesses his/her own distinct role. Most of Cascade Folk Trios music is created by Arman Aghajanyan. Lyrics are written by Ohanna Mtghyan and vocal arrangement is designed by Armen Papikyan.

Is there a rap fan out there who didn't like "The Message"? It took rap in an entirely new direction: while others were content to ride the "Double Dutch Bus" down to the disco, the Furious Five spoke out about social decay. The chorus of "The Message" ("Don't push me, 'cause I'm close to the edge / I'm trying not to lose my head / Sometimes it makes me wonder how I keep from going under") describes the effect of Reaganomics in ways that Dan Rather never could. Of course, Grandmaster Flash and company weren't against partying. In fact, they cut some of the best party tracks in the genre's history ("Freedom," "The Birthday Party"), along with some battle raps ("Step Off," "Showdown") to complete the package. Copyright restrictions probably kept the beat-edit classic "The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel" off the track listing. Still, one glaring omission isn't reason enough not to pick this up. --Todd InoueCustomer Reviews:

Grandmaster cuts faster.......2005-11-01
And let's talk MCs. Why don't rappers these days attack the mike anymore like these guys did? Are they afraid it's not cool to be energetic? Well no wonder no one dances to rap music anymore. But when you listen to this - the grooves and the punchy vocals - you will definitely move your body.
Only problem is: when you get hold of any other Hip Hop after this you'll be disappointed that the DJs don't cut as fast and clean as this Grandmaster.
The Quintessential 'Best Of' Collection.......2005-06-14
So if you're in the same boat as me, you're probably asking yourself, "Are their any other good songs from Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five?". Well, the answer is yes. This is probably the best single disc best of collection you'll find from these guys. These are long infectious party jams. Many of which include the artillery of a large emcee battle, such as the epic Furious Five / Sugarhill Gang collaboration of "Showdown". A song I didn't think I'd like given the title, "The Birthday Party", actually turned out to be one of my favorites. Although, "It's Nasty (Genius of Love)" would have to be one of the most under-appreciated rap songs of all time. It's got one of the most clever attacks on the compilation, and will surely please any and all hip-hop lovers. They do tackle a bit more social commentary on tracks like "New York New York" and "White Lines (Don't Don't Do It)". The latter features hard hitting lyrics about the dangers of drug use, and probably the most effective lyrics in it's time, given the subject matter. The only knock I have on the album is the first track, "Step Off Megamix". It's merely a "megamix" of their most popular songs thrown into one track (recorded in 1994). It would have been nicer if they would have thrown in a old-school jam up front, or at least put this track at the end, since the original versions shine much brighter throughout the remainder of the album.
Overall, if you're into old-school rap, this is a great listen. It's chalk-full of groundbreaking historical material. If you're at all interested in the evolution of rap, from the pre-Run-D.M.C. days, then you owe it to yourself to check this out. One could only be happier about the completeness of this collection.

Best of the the popular Copland..........2004-12-26
Though most of the pieces on this CD were written in the 1930s and 1940s, they tend to evoke the old west. With titles such as "Rodeo" and "Billy the Kid" this shouldn't surprise too many people.
Copland went on to compose more dissonant and twelve tone compositions later on in his career. These obviously weren't as popular with the public in general as the pieces on this CD. Nonetheless, if this disc whets the appetite, a foray into Copland's less popular works will yield much. It will help to expose the totality of Copland's output. This disc only represents a small portion of his work. Regardless, this disc is a great starting point for getting to know one of the United States' best known composers of the twentieth century.

Soul-sustaining, soul-feeding music........2003-03-29
There's such a unity of parts here on this album; there is no lead vocalist or instrumentalist, you could say "all men and women are creating equally." I know I'm making plays on words but it feels important. It's what my brain does in its self-talk, always trying to tweak the old cliches into something more up-to-date, usable, and, hopefully, moving.
Probably many still can't hear this music; try to go back to pop after a few hearings and it's like what Woody Guthrie said about hobo soup, "so thin you could read a magazine through it."
It's almost got a classical music feel to it. Samoa's voice is so pure it reminds me of what was said about Jo Stafford, "perfect pitch." And Jim -- he's definitely gone on somewhere, but at the same time he's right here, amazing!
Well I better quit before I start blabbering. Just wanted to say thanks guys for stirring my pot with a big ladle.
And to the public: Buy this CD! Even if you can't hear it the first time (and what great music can you hear the very first time) it will steal up on you!

Terrific vocal talents for Copland's music.......2002-08-08
William Warfield lends his voice and his interpretations of Copland's Old American Songs, and he sings them as they were meant to be, not as classical diletantes felt they should be. You have authenticity here.
Martha Lipton likewise contributes an older world charm and charisma to Copland's settings for Emily Dickenson's words.
Carl Sandberg's resonant reading of his own words is worth the full price of this set.
And then the inimitable Oscar Levant's piano treatment of the orchestral pieces...Levant had a wry touch to his interpretations that gave him a voice all his own.
There's much more here, quite a bit that's less than familiar and therefore increases one's familiarity with Copland.
finally sandburg's lincoln portrait.......2001-08-17
Wow! Pretty Good Deal.......2001-03-13
Vitebsk is exciting. Strings do much of the work here. The music is very unique to any other Copland works. Definitely here a sample of this.
The Sextet is very interesting. The combination of strings and piano is a prefect balance along with the clarinet doing much of the harmony. It is the same song though as Copland's 2nd symphony, the 'short' one.
Duo for Flute and Piano is fun and happy. The 1st movement fluctuates quite a bit in the feeling but is a very nice combination. The second movement is slightly morbid but the feeling of happy hi ho is not lost. The 3rd movement is light and bouncy and can be described as typical Copland.
Lincoln Portrait is powerful. Though I don't see how it fits on this CD has a rarity or a chamber work. It is the besy Lincoln P. I've ever heard though.
Old American Songs and Poems of Emily Dickinson are not that good though. It's a vocalist and a piano accompanyingthe vocalist. The vocalists are not that good and I felt needed to feel the music a little more. Thomas Hampson and Dawn Upshaw made a CD with these songs which is much better (the only problem is that that CD only has 8 of the 12 Emily Dickinson Songs).
Billy the Kid was a nice way to finish off. It's just a few excerpts played on solo piano. It was interesting hearing the piece performed this way.
The recording quality is okay sometimes and kinda slipping other times. Then again, these are classic recordings for the most part. The skill though of the orchestra and soloists for the most part is that of a high quality. I definitely recommend this CD to any Copland fans out there trying to discover more about Copland. It's a very nicely put together CD and price worthy too.
