Album Description

Austin singer-songwriter legend and master of soulful "red dirt" roots music returns with a panoramic collection of songs on his first new release in two years. Produced by LaFave and recorded in Austin, it features the immense talents of his regular band: John Inmon on guitar and lap steel, Andrew Hardin on guitar, Radoslav Lorkavic on keys, Wally Doggett on drums and Jeff May on bass. Looking to include some of his favorite female singers, LaFave invited Ruthie Foster, Carrie Rodriguez and Kacy Crowley to lend their vocals, adding their full harmonies to four tracks.

Recorded with friends and neighbors, Cimarron Manifesto has an organic feel that grew out of the red dirt of LaFave's childhood. Celebrating the restless American soul, it's destined to be the brightest jewel in a career of musical treasures.

Jimmy reaches out and grabs you.......2007-06-15

The first I heard of Jimmy LaFave was his cover of 'Walk Away Renee' on 'Austin Skyline' a good few years ago. It jumped out of the radio and grabbed me by the throat. I was lucky enough to see him live here in Auckland as the opening act for Lucinda Williams ... what a concert that was. His cover of 'Catch the Wind' on this will reach out and grab people all over again.

New LaFave cd grows on Cheyenne Chick .......2007-06-13

I have all of Jimmy's albums; try to go to all the live shows I can. This latest work projects a different twist/side to his personality. I love the passion of his other albums and his ability to touch your heart with his words and his voice. All of his albums are excellent. The new album to me has an ever so slight country slant to it but it is good although it took me a few listens to appreciate the added female vocals. As of yet, it is not my most favorite but I will definitely "wear it out" over time. The photography on the cover is phenomenal--good job Brian. I would have liked to had the words to the songs included as with all the other albums.

Jimmy is my favorite artist. I guess that Texoma is still my favorite, but this CD is right there. Like other reviewers, I remain amazed at how great a writer, singer and guitarist he is...and only a few folk outside of Texas and New England know his work. Buy this and you will want everything else he has ever done!

Revival!.......2007-05-17

Let the others have their radio hits, Jimmy's the man when it comes to true American music. This is another nice piece of work. Musically, it is very "full" sounding and the harmonies (with the ladies) are just terrific. A great group of musicians here (Andrew Hardin is always a plus). "Lucky Man" really hits home. A great song. Dont miss out seeing him live!

Tomas Kalnoky, sole songwriter of CATCH 22's cult classic "Keasbey Nights" formed STREETLIGHT MANIFESTO two years ago with original CATCH 22 members Josh Ansley and Jamie Egan. Most musically talented ska band ever formed.......2007-07-12

This cd totally blew me away. It has slamming fast horn lines and manages to mix things up in all thier songs. I'm in band so I noticed things like split parts and insturments switching parts. They used creciandos and so many other cool things. Saddest song, Heres to Life, Everything went numb and A Better Place a Better Time are the highlights of the album. You are probally wondering at this point why I gave it three stars instead of five. Lots of people don't get it but musisicians don't need to curse. It doesnt add to the musical quality or over all effectiveness of the album. How many people but an album because it curses? In fact there are more people offended by it then impressed by it. I ended up deleting half the album from my computer. But other than that it blew me away. Incredible band.

Will restore your faith in humanity.......2007-04-07

This album is a remarkable breath of fresh air in the current stagnant music industry. Much of what it on the radio and sold by major labels it so overly processed and reused that it has no more apeal to me than a can of spam. By comparrison, Everything Goes Numb is like a fine seak. The members of Streetlight manifesto are all so increadibly talented and experienced with their instruments that the music is complex and replayable to a ridiculous degree. As a bass guirarist, their bassist's work amazed me with it's complexity. Frontman Thomas Kalnoky's songwriting and vocals are amazingly catchy and meaningfull. If I am ever feeling depressed, the song A Better Place, A Better Time never fails to help. You owe it to yourself to listen to this amazing band. I cannot wait to hear their next album.

I AM SHOCKED!.......2006-12-16

Now this is real music! This is one of the best ska albums to come out ever next to "Keasby Nights". I hate everything mainstream and am always looking for some new stuff to listen to. This is good! I am usually into street punk(Dead Kennedys, Subhumans), but this is incredible! THE BEST SONG IS "ANOTHER PLACE, ANOTHER TIME". This is great ska!

More of the same...more of the same........2006-11-29

Okay--let's start from the top. All the songs sound exactly the same. Not only do they all sound alike, but they sound pretty much exactly like the songs on Keasbey Nights. It wouldn't be so bad if it didn't suck so much, but I think it would just be best to GIVE THE BAND SOME VALIUM SO THEY WOULD SLOW DOWN JUST A BIT!! I hate hearing music that's so fast that I can't follow it! It's way too fast, way too drawn-out, and way too complicated. I'm sure that everyone, given the chance, would flaunt their talents briefly to show the extent of their abilities, but it's like this album is a constant horn solo battle--everyone working against each other to make a very staccato, very sporadic, very annoying sound.

Let's not forget the band's frontman, Tomas Kalnoky. He left Catch 22 and briefly quit playing music (He went to art school in Georgia before making Streetlight Manifesto) because he didn't have complete control over the songwriting process. Forgive me for saying so, but bands are a co-operative effort with everyone pitching in their ideas to make a sound that represents an entire band--not just one person. So, who told me all of this stuff? None other than Tomas Kalnoky himself, in July of 2004. He has shown that he only knows how to write one kind of song--the songs that are on Keasbey Nights and Everything Goes Numb. It's all bland, it's all way too fast, and it all sucks.

I'm giving this album 2 stars instead of 1 because the band members (minus Tomas) are very talented individuals and have a boatload of potential...they are just led by a crappy songwriter.

This band is the fourth and in my opinion best project tomas kalnoky has been involved with. This album is one of the only albums i can listen to in its entirety and not skip a track. i know the lyrics to every song and some of the beats in a way. its a great album.

1. Everything went numb:9/10 great song.. good start to any day great intro great verse great chorus.. end of story
2. That'll be the day:9/10 they opened with this when i saw them and the crowd reaction was just amazing.. great message
3.Point/Counterpoint:9/10 kind of a continuation of Keasbey Nights, this song is what got me into SM
4. If and When We Rise: 8/10 when i first heard this song i would usually skip over it but its become one of my most favorite tracks
5. A Better Place, A Better Time: 9/10 a bit long but its great, slow opening and slowly picks up speed and erupts into a nice ska tune
6. We Are the Few: 9/10 prolly best song to see/hear live. kind of a tribal unity type thing i guess lol
7. Failing Flailing: 9/10 great first minute of pure instrumental, the end of the song with the sort of round robin thing is pretty cool too
8.Here's to life: 9/10 my second favorite track. heart pounding adrenaline with a beautiful bridge section with the horns
9. A Moment of Silence: 9/10 the beginning of the "doubletrack" i guess u could call it A Moment Of Silence/Violence.. my favorite song by this band.. basically about how catch 22 got famous off of toms songs and whatnot.. nice and slow track beautiful lines
10. A Moment of Violence: 9/10 after AMOS sets down a slow pace this song comes in and just knocks you over.. when they played these two live.. ppl who werent familiar with the band didnt realize what was about to erupt and were taken by surprise as the pits exploded.. great song to pump adrenaline
11. Saddest Song: 9/10 an Anti-Suicide song.. a popular theme in kalnoky's writing. on the demo the song ends and the horns do some little cool jazzy stuff
12. The Big Sleep: 9/10 a love song no doubt.. a good song to witness live while everyone shouts out the "na na na na na na"'s

in conclusion... this cd is the best thing that has happened to the east coast.. nay,planet earth. haha just buy the cd

Really a great album.......2007-07-17

When I first heard the original Keasbey Nights, it instantly became my favorite cd. I'm still listening to it today. When I first heard about this new take on it I was a little worried. I thought that Streetlight Manifesto couldn't compete with the original and they would just lose the "awesomeness" of the original, boy was I wrong. The horn solos are much better, most of the lyrical differences add quite a lot to the songs. However Streetlight does lose some of the energy that the original had. While I still like the first Keasbey Nights better, this is still an awesome cd that you should get as soon as you can.

Even if it was just a remake of an older Catch 22 album, Streetlight Manifesto did a great job with their second release, Keasbey Nights.

The REAL Keasbey Nights.......2006-07-31

I loved Keasbey Nights when it was released in 1998. It was a GREAT album and everytime I listened to it I loved it more and more and more. Then Tomas left and Catch 22 lost their sound. When Tomas left Catch 22 their sound left as well. Then Tomas formed Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution which only released one EP. Then after that Streetlight Manifesto was formed. Everything Goes Numb was the start of a great movement. Then in 2006 I heard word of SM redoing Keasbey Nights which puzzled me a bit but I couldn't wait. Then it finally came out and of course I bought it. Right from the start you can notice that this is not the same album at all. This album is like taking crude oil and refining it into gasoline. Catch 22's Keasbey Nights was crude oil and SM's Keasbey Nights is gasoline. This is the way Keasbey Nights was supposed to sound. Don't listen to others who say "oh this is the same damn CD as Catch 22's there's no difference here I waisted $$$ on this damn thing" f*ck them this CD is not the same. The only thing the same here is the title of the CD, the order of the songs, and the names of the songs. Besides that this is a completely different CD with some added lyrics to some of the songs. I guarantee you won't be disappointed by buying this. I sure as hell know I wasn't. I almost threw out the old Keasbey Nights after buying this it is that good.

Obviously clueless........2006-07-24

I've read some reviews of this album that say it's an exact duplicate of the original Keasbey Nights. These people obviously either don't listen well, or they don't understand music. There are so many differences, and I still find some when I listen to the album for the 100th time. The horn lines are nearly all more intricate, the bass on this album is absolutely astounding, there are lyrical alterations, and the solos are beautifully done.

Someone else said that Tomas needs to realize that music is for fans to listen to. What? No, it isn't. Making music is a way of expressing ones self, and if other people buy it, it's an added bonus. If you listen to the final track, it was either he re-record it with SM, or they (the label) re-release it with no real changes. But even that shouldn't have to be explained, because no musician should be making music to make fans happy. That would be like an author writing a book that he doesn't like, or a visual artist making a drawing/painting that they wouldn't purchase themselves. Artists are in NO way using their talent just to please the masses. If they are, they aren't true artists, plain and simple.

I fully recommend this album. I still listen to the original, and you can't compare the two and say which is better, because it wouldn't be fair to either record, because they're both wonderfully good.

A Great Compolation Album.......2007-03-18

This CD is great. Every song is good so you can listen to the album as a whole without having to skip every other track. A good album to listen to while sitting around your house for an afternoon or taking an early morning drive. If you like great raspy male vocals you'll love Tom Waits. This is a CD worth buying.

great cd.......2007-01-12

I'm really a huge tom waits fan I own alot of his albums i saw this as well as vol. 1 on amazon and decided to give them a listen. i think they are both really good cds themselves and they give a goo picture of tom in his formative years an added bonus is to hear all the familiar songs which did make on to his records in what almost seem like demos.

A new look at some classic tunes.......2007-01-02

These are mostly demo songs, some of which were never relased, from Wait's early years (no kidding). Some of the songs on here, such as "I Hope I Don't Fall In Love With You" and "Ol' 55", would go on to become classics. Some of these songs are actually better than the versions that were put on the albums, especially "Shiver Me Timbers," here turned into a piano-ballad romp, rather than the jazzy outting featured on HEART OF SATURDAY NIGHT. THE EARLY YEARS, VOLUME 2 offers a good introduction into Waits's early music (sparse arrangements, beautiful lyrics), and is also a handy addition to previously-existing Waits collections.

Both volumes well worth owning, particularly for fan(atics)........2006-02-20

Who could ask for more? Previously unreleased recordings, quite evidently very well recorded demos, of one of the great musical artists of the last 35 years? Well, here it is, each volume perfectly listenable. In fact, a must listen for the fan as there's a few songs here now released on any other TOM WAITS record and those that are redone are stripped down versions, revealing the heart of the songs. Closing Time, his first lp, is a bit stiff. In fact, it's my least favorite of his 70's albums only because the producer just got a somewhat stiffled sound out of the recordings. Fortunately, they solved that in spades on future records.

What's delightful is that these songs provide a chance to hear Mr. WAITS in his least gravely voice of his career and at his youngest of his career.

'Hope I Don't Fall In Love With You' is a sweet song that fulfills his common setting of being in a bar and some yearning for unattainable love. He's got a way of telling a tale that surprises and pleases and takes you to the smokey piano lounge where his music comes from.

I love a good cover. Who's know the EAGLES didn't write this 'Ol' 55'? To hear TOM do it makes me forget all about their version (gladly). 'Nobody' has always been a potent song lyrically. Now we get to hear it in his simple presentation. A nice mix.

'Diamonds On My Windshield' has always been a favorite given that me and many other folks I know have taken that same basic drive from San Diego to L.A. I've probably driven that 100's of times in 35 years and sometimes it was while listening to this song. Wot a treat.

'Please Call Me, Baby' is another plaintiff love song and, again, this album gives us the treat of hearing it with his younger voice and plain instrumental accompanyment.

Yes, do buy all his 70's albums first. It's unfortunate Mr. WAITS didn't wanna have this released. Who can blame him as an artist? However, as a fan, the songs on both volumes here are irreplaceable and to be cherished. Thanks for makin' the music TOM. chrisbct@hotmail.com

Great album but the packaging caused my CD to break!.......2004-08-02

This is the second copy of the album I have bought, and probably the last. The first copy burned up in a fire. The second, which my wife bought me to replace the original copy, broke when I attempted to remove it from the spindle it was mounted on.

The original copy I had of The Early Years Volume 2 was a normal plastic jewel case, and there was no problem with taking it off the spindle. But the new packaging (Manifesto MFO 40602) has the CD mounted on an extremely tight plastic spindle that forces you to bend the CD when removing it. There is no "button" action to press that would release the CD, so the result is, the CD bends enough where it pops off, or it simply breaks. (I also have Tom Waits The Early Years Volume 1, which has the same spindle problem, but fortunately did not bend enough to break. I am now treating it with extreme care!)

As for the music on the CD (which I am familiar with thanks to the original copy which was destroyed by fire), it is truly wonderful: it reveals an acoustic and stripped down side of Tom Waits where you really see a side to his soul without the distractions of exaggerated blues influences or unusual musical arrangements. But there is no point buying a great CD if you can't listen it. Wait until Manifesto makes a quality case, or buy an older version, if you can find it.

Track for track and album after album, the Dead Kennedys were the most relentlessly political and controversial stateside punk rock band to gain much public notoriety. Originally released in 1987, Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death collects 17 of the band's singles, compilation tracks, and rarities spanning the eight years they played together. This is a wide and deep collection of favorites like "California Über Alles" and "Holiday in Cambodia," but the real reason to pick up this disc is the more obscure and rare material. From 1979, "Night of the Living Rednecks" has hyperactive mouthpiece Jello Biafra relating a tale of being chased by irate rednecks while the rhythm sections jams. Their version of "I Fought the Law" rewrites it into a true-to-life murder ballad, while rippers like "Life Sentence," "Insight," "Pull My Strings" and "Straight A's" are off the map unless you were lucky enough to pick up the original singles or compilations that they're pulled from. Got to be one of the greatest songs ever written. Even all these years later it still rings true. To this day whenever I seen these fake punk bands on TV that song comes to mind. The rest of this album is still good to listen too, yeh a lot of the stuff you will find on other albums but there are still a few good tracks here that you need to pick up.

Give Me "Give Me Convenience...".......2007-03-26

All the loose ends of the Dead Kennedys non-album singles, B-sides, and/or comp. tracks are compiled here for our convenience, which the title of the collection takes its name, twisting Patrick Henry's famous "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death!" line. "Give me Convenience or Give Me Death" was originally released in 1987 about a year after the band's demise. Though all these songs came together as a collection of leftovers, they coincidentally all work together as a solid album. This is one of my favorite releases by Dead Kennedys ranking on par with "Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables."

Everything here is indigenous to this album with even the single versions of "Holiday in Cambodia" and "California Uber Alles" being different recordings than what's found on the "Fresh Fruit..." album. "Police Truck" and "Too Drunk..." are also classics in their own right found on this and no other DK album. There's even a premonition of Jello's spoken word work on "Night of the Living Rednecks" as he stalls for time by telling one of his road stories during a live set while East Bay Ray changes a broken guitar string.

Being recorded at different points in the band's career, the tracks here jump around through different incarnations of the Kennedys' sound. Your always kept on your toes with each tune a little bit different than any of the others on the record as their sound thoroughly evolved from year to year. Some of Dead Kennedys' best gems can be found here from all its different eras.

A Collection of Wayward Tracks Given a Good Home.......2007-01-21

I remember having many of these songs on seven inches and twelve inch EPs (45 rpms instead of 30, fewer songs, usually extended versions, remixes or singles deemed worthy of the extra work and effort) before this first came out. This has everything, plus various items not released on LPs (or taken off, like Police Truck).

Probably the key releases to me are Police Truck, Too Drunk to F***, Life Sentance, A Child and His Lawnmower, Saturday Night Holocaust, Pull My $tring$, Kinky Sex Makes the World Go 'Round, The Prey and Night of The Living Rednecks (more a signal of what he would become than as an actual tune). But the rest of the tracks are good to excellent also.

A necessary release for any DK fan, and worthy for those learning about the band.

The Dead Kennedys are my favorite band. Their music is so incredible and wildly controversial. I love this album. It has classic songs. It's fulla hits! "police Truck" is an awesome song. The best song is "Too Drunk..." that one rules. The lyrics are great. They play that one great live. "Holiday in Cambodia" is pretty sweet too. "California uber alles" is also great. this is just an all around great CD okay!

Tom Waits wasn't always the intense, even bizarre pop expressionist he'd become by the '80s. This album consists of demo songs, some of which have never previously seen the light of day, taken from Tom Waits's early years (duh), before he become the musical genius that he's considered today. Granted, these songs are all well-written and performed; yet they lack something of the latter work. Nevermind, though; THE EARLY YEARS, VOLUME 1 serves as a good introduction to the pre-SWORDFISHTROMBONES years of Waits career, and is also a fine addition to already-exististing Waits collections. The sparse arrangements offer a sense of intimacy; some of the recordings, such as "Little Trip to Heaven," are even better than the versions that made the record.

More "Closing Time" please...........2006-11-01

This compilation of early Tom Waits songs/demos, are very interesting to me. At first listen I enjoyed it, but thought that it's just a little more Closing Time material. And true 4 of the 13 songs are early versions of songs on Closing Time. But a few more listens gave me a much deeper appreciation. I really get into the first half of the album especially, the first two tracks might be my favorite, but what's unique about this album is how minimal it is. Most songs are just Tom's voice and his guitar, or his piano, with virtually no accompaniment; this with his very heart-warming sounding early 70's voice (before the growl) make this "album" sound very personal.
Mostly, I feel that this "album" should be pursued by those who are interested in Tom Waits, and already have the "staples" of his collection, especially Closing Time. I can't see someone outside of fans really seeing the significance of these recordings.
Lastly, I find it almost weird listening to it, because he felt so strongly about not releasing these recordings, I almost feel like I am invading his privacy. But it's released, so I try not to feel too bad.

i keep coming back to that thing someone said about woody allen (maybe woody allen) about how it's sad that ageing artists always have their current stuff compared to their old stuff, and maybe the story i heard that waits didn't ever want this stuff to see the light of day isn't apocryphal. still from a listener's standpoint there is a lot of value and enjoyment from hearing this balladry and then turning on real gone and liking and likening both, yes?

It's a treat to hear his least gravely voice recordings. There's a whole world out there of tape/cdr traders (no money exchanged) who have, for decades, traded for live, demo and outtakes of their favorite bands. Typically, this is done by pretty fanatic fans. In my case, I can only bear to hear the same exact studio recordings for so many years for most bands.

Often I'll take a 1 to 5 year break from listening to a particular favorite group (BEATLES, BAD BRAINS, MINOR THREAT, ROCHES, CREAM etc.) but will get my hands on alternate versions when I can including tribute albums. There's nuttin' like hearing a well crafted reinterpretation of a favorite song. Least for me.

Some bands release previously unreleased material of demos, live songs and/or outtakes, particularly now adays, rounding out cd versions of old lps they previously released. SUPERCHUNK and X have dug through their musical archives and released cds of such previously unissued, b-sides or other non-album songs. That also includes songs that only appeared on a compilation with other groups. It's amazing how many great songs a band can record that never get officially released. Another source is in studio radio broadcasts.

DAN HICKS and HIS HOT LICKS, actually I think just DAN HICKS, did an album called Early Muses of songs he recorded prior to the release of his first official album. His was, it appears, an offically sanctioned release. Just like this album and vol. 2, it offered songs recorded by the artist quite early in his career. Both guys sound younger because they are. These early recordings are typically more like early demos. ELVIS COSTELLO included a handful of his songs just like these from before his first album, as bonus trax on reissues of his first and second albums. As on this album and DAN HICKS', they were demo songs recorded solo on acoustic guitar (or piano). One gets to hear stripped down versions of some favorite songs and even, particularly on this album, several songs never otherwise released.

A pure treat for the fan. Sure, there's 1 or 2 songs that are a touch less than they could be but most of the songs remind me of whenever JOHNNY CASH did a cover in his last period of just him singing and accompanying himself on guitar. He tears the song down to it's emotional essentials. He actually is able to bring new emotional meaning to some songs he covers simply by changing the pacing or his voice inflection or the feeling he brings in singing the lyrics.

TOM WAITS may not have wanted this and vol. 2 to be released, for whatever perfectly legitimate artist or business reasons he had, but for the fan these two albums are a real treasure trove. It's roots of WAITS, the beginning years of an esteemed national and internationally respected artist. His song writing ability shines through, his ability to sing with emotion is plain here. The songs are simply performed yet are complex in their texture of feeling and story telling.

Yes, I'd purchase each of his 70's albums before buying these two volumes. And I'd certainly recommend both of these records because there is great joy in listening to well recorded early demos of an artist who has remained robust in his musical creations for over 3 decades now. I had looked up this album to see what others had to say about it, and I was surprised that nobody has given it 5 stars yet...so, let me be the first...

I bought this album way back in '92, when I first spied it in record store in San Francisco - at the time, I had no idea that it wasn't a "true" Tom album. I have to say, that I prefer this album over much of his overproduced 70's work.

As many have stated in other reviews, this album is a collection of demos that Tom did in the early 70's, and a handful of these songs ended up on his later albums. That being said, the fact that this album is a bit underproduced gives it more of an intimate feel...the music, words and Tom's voice pull you in and make you feel sort of warm a cozy - this collection also works well as a whole album - there is a definate continuity between the songs, and it flows together as smoothly as "Heart of a Saturday Night" does.

When it comes to the songs that ended up on studio albums, I prefer to hear the "Early Years" versions rather than the overproduced tracks....'Ice Cream Man' is far superior to the version on "Closing Time"...same can be said for 'Virginia Avenue"...

This is one of those rare early years/demo albums by your favorite artist that don't fall into the "for diehards only" - This is a solid collection of songs - do yourself a favor and pick it up, regardless of what era Waits fan you categorize yourself as..

DK burst on the scene in the late 70's with an innovative and extremely funny sound. Blending elements of punk, hardcore and rockabilly with lyrical content based souly on political awareness the Dead Kennedys were leading the charge on the movement of getting the word out. Lead by master lyricist Jello Biafra (who was a man on a mission), surf rock guitarist East Bay Ray, bass player extraordinaire Klaus Flouride and Ted on drums. The Dead Kennedys were embarking on a dangerous and untraveled road against all odds. This reissue of their debut is a perfect starting point for all those revolutionaries out there who truly want to listen to something important.Many great songs here. There are a few fillers on the album but those tracks don't take away from the intensity of 'Fresh Fruit'. As a bonus with this reissue you get a 55 minute documentary dvd which offers insight into the beginnings of DK. Early performances of the band which are out of this world, interviews and Jello's short run for Mayor of San Francisco. Incredible to say the least.

It's been said that Tim Buckley was the most powerful singer of his generation. Even if that appraisal forgets Bob Dylan, this two-disc set makes a hell of a defense. At the very least his voice could do things few could: it soared beyond any familiar register and held notes long past the breaking point. He had learned from jazz vocalists like Sarah Vaughn, but he put technical prowess into the service of a strange, trancelike state. Sing As If You Are Singing to the Angels .......2007-07-01

Tim Buckley shines on this live 2 hour set and this was his first performance in London. Sounds like it was a remarkable show. His words and his wounded magnificient voice gleams through and through as this entire show is available on this here double disc album.
Really powerful, pouring out his heart on these sessions. After each song you can hear the love from the crowd's applause.
Definitely something to listen to if you just want to sit back and meditate on Tim Buckley's words.

Buckley created baroque pop on his album: "Goodbye Hello" and re-created it's magic on this set, especially with the song -"Morning Glory"- one of my personal favorite Tim Buckley songs.
Others on "Dream Letter" from "Goodbye and Hello" are "Pleasant Street" - "Once I Was" - "Hallucinations" and "Carnival Song"-

He created a folk-jazz sound on "Happy Sad".
Dream Letter: Live at London 1968 captures the transition between those two records.
This Live set is so well produced, that despite energy from the Audience one would think it was a near perfect studio album. Not only do you get the power felt from the audience, you also can feel your own heart pounding to this voice of an Angel, that is Tim Buckley.
Just like his son -Jeff Buckley- the World lost both way too soon.
Both had heavenly powerful voices that sung High to the Heavens, and bringing on a smile to everyone who listens to their Music.

Tim Buckley is a voice to be reckoned with. There's no two ways about it: it's his voice or it's the highway. Well, this recording covers the complete, unbelievable range of this talented singer. The concert is whole, warts and all. There are VERY few warts, but they're there in all their glory. That's the great thing about this album: it reproduces every single moment from that one night. You feel like you're there. The voice, the instruments, they sound like they're in your living room. His voice is so clear, it fills every room.

Tim Buckley is a psychedelic troubardour with a voice that can reveal your innermost feelings. It's exhilirating.

Buckley's Best.......2007-01-28

Dream Letter: Live in London finds Tim Buckley at the height of his powers. Recorded October 7, 1968 at Queen Elizabeth Hall when he was 21, this musical chameleon, whose short but prolific career took him from folk to improvisational jazz to white hot funk, is captured here between his folk and jazz phases. Live albums either tend to be dull and uninspired efforts or bright, vibrant affairs filled with spontaneity and excitement. Fortunately, this album falls into the latter category. Buckley delivers a soaring two hour performance that surpasses just about all of his studio material, and the sound quality is the best I've ever heard on a live recording.

The main instrument in Buckley's repertoire has always been his 3 ½ octave voice. It's full range is on display from caveman-like guttural growls to high notes held longer than one can imagine. His tenor is not something that would be described as angelic; rather it is earthy, experienced, twisting and turning with emotion as he rides the roller coaster of melodies from one song to another. The sound quality of the recording is so good its easy put the headphones on, close your eyes, imagine yourself in a smoky nightclub watching the spotlight on the famous Buckley trance as he immerses himself totally into the music, delivering phrases in flowing laments or waves of joy.

The band consisting of Lee Underwood on lead guitar, Danny Thompson on base, and Dave Friedman on virbraphone provide a perfect complement to Buckley's vocals and keep the songs lively and fresh. Album standards such as "Dolphins," "Buzzin' Fly" and the medley of "Happy Time/Dream Letter" are delivered with an energy unmatched in the studio. But more interesting to me are the songs that are unique to this album such as "The Earth is Broken," "Carnival Song/Hi Lily, Hi Lo," "Troubadour," an inspired "Wayfaring Stranger/You Got Me Running," and the Supremes' "You Keep Me Hanging On."

If you buy only one album by Buckley, this is the one to get.

Emotional overload.......2006-04-12

The finest Live album I have heard in my short 38 years of life, emotion and vitality that will have you thinking, was this really recorded almost 30 Years ago. Nothing compares, anyone who has heard the "MTV Unplugged" will wonder why they wasted their money, it does NOT get any better than this...God rest his soul

Vocal Tour de Force.......2005-12-14

The late singer Tim Buckley left brief, but very strong catalog of music before his untimely demise in the mid-70's. To my ears this record, DREAM LETTER: LIVE IN LONDON 1968 is the crown jewel of his recording career.

When this was recorded in 1968, Buckley was metamorphisizing from a mystical folkie, towards a more avant-garde jazz based style. Whatever the style was, Buckley was an otherworldly vocalist, capable of emiting low animalistic grolws or hitting ear-piercing high trills at the drop of a beat. His vocal fireworks are both breathtaking and supportive of the feeling of the songs, something few artists manage. As he sings on this fine two disk set, you can hear him mold his voice in the same way Coltrane molds the sound of his sax to reflect the pure emotion of his material.

Standouts include the opening number BUZZIN' FLY, the epic WHO DO YOU LOVE, an amazing version of the folk standard WAYFARING STRANGER and a powerful medley of PLEASANT STREET merging into a couple verses of The Supreme's classic YOU KEEP ME HANGIN' ON. He ends the set with a gentle, yet powerful version of his most famous song, ONCE I WAS.

The spare, intuitive backing from Danny Thompson (Bass), Lee Underwood (guitar) and David Friedman (vibes) frame these performances perfectly. The instrumentl ebb and flow mesh perfectly with Buckley's emotion rollercoaster vocals creating a live recording that still sounds powerfull and fresh thirtysome years after it was recorded.

This album is an equal mix of Roxy Music seeking a new direction and, at the same time, reconciling that search with the current music trends that surrounded them. The result is more focused, more assertive, more energetic, more enigmatic, more "Roxy" than "Siren," the previous album. Of course, a three and a half year hiatus allows ample time for reinvention. "Angel Eyes" and "Dance Away" are perhaps the best known tracks here, but the title track is the one that cuts right to the essence of Roxy...the fluid, elastic bass line snakes through the track with a constant air of menace. The lyrics, delivered with classic Bryan Ferry ennui, talk about his penchant for "friendship and plain sailing through frenzied ports o' call..."

Ferry also addresses the "what is life" riddle in definitive fashion when he croons "Hold out when you're in doubt, question what you see, and when you find an answer, bring it home to me..."

That's what really lies at the heart of "Country Life" (or should I say "Street Life"), at least through Roxy Music's filter of perception: You're bored, you're restless, but hey...you LOOK like a million bucks. Dance away, everyone. Just dance away. Nothing wrong with being clueless while you're making a fashion statement.

Almost the album I wanted.......2007-01-23

Don't get me wrong - I *love* this album. Not as much as some other Roxy Music albums, but enough that I was hankering to replace my cassette tape with CD. My eurodisco favorite, "Angel Eyes" was REPLACED however with some glam-like mediochre creature without the fun and innocence of the version I love so much - All I'm saying is be careful because not all is the same with the CD.

The Last Roxy Music Album..........2005-11-12

This is Roxys last gasp...I mean "wheres Eddie Jobson??" Actually this really a good recording, its just that the first 5 Roxy Music albums were so flawlessly perfect that its hard to stand up against that level of perfection...anyway..with that said...I have NO IDEA why they took off the great rock version and put the disco-fluff version of Angel Eyes, which is hard to find on CD. This, to me is really the last Roxy Music Album, because you just CANT have Roxy Music without Paul Thompson...sorry. I mean Avalon and the others are nice pieces, but they really should have been Bryan Ferry solo albums because Andy and Phil are really playing more as session players there.

The weakest of the canon.......2005-04-22

Unlike the rest of Roxy Music's catalogue I was disappointed with this album. A weak comeback attempt after 4 years out, this album is little more than a pale shadow of Roxy Music's early work. 'Dance Away', 'Still Falls the Rain' and 'Ain't That So' are good Roxy tracks but the rest falls short. The title track is almost abhorrent. If they were looking for new musical styles, then they found it on the next one 'Flesh and Blood' and 'Avalon'. Forget this one.

Roxy Music-Manifesto.......2004-12-20

I prefer Roxy Music's first 5 albums, but this one has a couple of excellent songs. Still Falls the Rain is my personal favorite, as well as being as dark as Bryan Ferry has gone. Also check out Cry Cry Cry, as well as Spin Me Round, which paved the way for "Running Wild" on flesh and blood(an incredible song!)

Classic Dead Kennedys.......2007-07-04

Ok first off I am not interested in all the controversy about the ex band member.

I heard all the BS about them and know full well about their "Rock and Coke" festival in Turkey (Dead Kennedys rock and Coke....please) Though in saying that not much of a fan of post DK Jello churning out LP after LP saying the same boring meaningless rant for the kids (yeh he may go on about the ex band members milking the DK's name for profit but can he realy say he is doing any different with his endless Jello Biafra and the blah blah band albums?)

Anyway, rant over. DK were/are one of my all time favorite band from way back before any tv ad or whatever and this is one of my all time favorite LPs. DK were great because they could mix politics with good music and humour as well. They didnt rant but just took the p*** out of the powers that be. Some of these tracks (such as bleed for me, I am the owl) need to be heard by kids today.

Great to hear, never mind the BS over the ex band members. Leave them to fight it out amongst themselves. Me, I will just keep the memories of a great band.

Re-master this!!.......2007-04-12

Censored for the SUV generation. The original release of "In God We Trust Inc." included the track "Too Drunk to F**k". Dont bother. Look for a used copy of the previous CD release.
"Plastic Surgery Disasters" was not their best release. Jello Biafra's lyrics sound like he was running out of ideas.

maybe i dont get it or had to be there or something. i mean, maybe im just growing out of this political "shock" punk thing. maybe "nazi punks f**k off" has more of a back story and was a protest anthem that i am unaware of.

anyways, yes, this album is well worth a spot in any DK fan's collection and hits pretty hard and fast at that! there are some great little hardcore political songs on this. i mean, it isn't near as attractive as bad brains or early bad religion, but ill give the boys their credit. they were nice and creative in a political sense around a time when most bands were trying to be another Ramones. make sure you get fresh fruit for rotting veggies first. that is the DK album to own.

p.s. if you get this and want it brand new, dont worry about those "alternative tentacles" nutcases. this band broke up about 20 years ago and people are still raving about how they are "selling out." even so, a band that makes people think about important issues should be noticed by more than the people who already agree with it. so jello isnt profitting like many argue. well unless you buy these cds from jello himself, it is all the same. id rather support the 3 other guys in the band, over some elitist record store owner who will buy beer.
