About the Artist
Internationally acclaimed Dan Bau (monochord) player, Pham Duc Thanh was born in Ninh Binh, northern Vietnam, in 1956. Displaying a remarkable musical aptitude as a child, Duc Thanh was already playing the Dan Bau (monochord), as well as the Dan Tranh (16-string zither) and Dan Nhi (two-string fiddle)by the age of six. In 1974, Duc Thanh moved to Hanoi, where he studied at a popular traditional theatre school and joined the leading Hat Cheo theatre group as a Dan Bau player. After attending Saigon's Research Center for Music, he went on to become one of the country's top Dan Bau players of traditional and contemporary music.

In August 1990, Duc Thanh and his wife, singer Nguyet Lan, left Vietnam and moved to Germany for several years before emigrating to Canada in 1996.

Today, the Montreal based multi-instrumentalist is known as one of the world's leading exponents of traditional Vietnamese Music.

Oh, This collection is indeed very beautiful. (For me) it does require some "effort" to listen to the different language, but it is well worth it. The only thing is that I wish there were more insturmental songs on here-- (most feature vocals).
One of the women in this group has a wonderfully beautiful voice.

It is the only kind in the world. The instrument has only one string but makes all the pitches. It is plucked but all sounds are harmonics. Must be seen to realize the wonder of this musical instrument. Performed here by a "grand" master. All the pitches could be heard clearly, and bent in every way imaginable. Highly recommended.

This recording is a work of wonder, an act of dedication by Philip Blackburn, an American contemporary composer who traveled to Vietnam in 1993 as a visiting artist and came home with some of the best recordings of contemporary folk-music traditions available anywhere. Nineteen tracks display the cultural variety and excellent musicianship of this nation, from street musicians, school children, farmers, and mothers as well as classically trained artists and professional folk musicians. There are work songs, play songs, songs of religious fervor and simple life events, and each is well recorded, on location, without any pretense at production or "art." Works are performed by gong ensembles; by skilled chamber-music ensembles using ancient zithers and modern, altered guitars; by theater orchestras and solo singers; by lutenists and bamboo-xylophone players. Blackburn has also include a lengthy piece recorded at random on a street in Hanoi, complete with the sounds of passing vehicles, street musicians, a bell smith, bikers, and chirping bugs. --Louis Gibson

Stilling Time is one of my all-time favorite CDs. It seems as though something other than just the music (which is quite astounding) was captured on tape. The feeling in the air, the silences, the tension and enviornment are all there too. You feel like you're in the same room, in a foriegn place, listening in on some of the most unique, heart-felt traditional folk music available to our ears today. This, simply-put is Beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Unusual Vietnamese music.......2002-09-20

This Vietnamese classical court ensemble plays in a style which dates from the 11th Century. For a while during the Vietnam War, the city of Hue retained its sacrosanct hands-off status, but eventually got engulfed by the conflict. The ensemble, meanwhile, became cultural ambassadors -- a position they continue to fill. The striking thing about the repertoire is how closely it resembles classical Chinese and Japanese music, with koto-like lutes and languid vocals, rather than the quirky and hypnotic folk styles of various Vietnamese provinces. Meditative, stately music... definitely worth checking out!

    Album Description

Imagine a country whose instrumental heritage includes a thousand-year-old, one-string precursor to the electric guitar: a country where you can play a percussion instrument without actually touching it; a country where one-hole flutes and strange rifle-shaped mouth harps are more common than a piano. Imagine a country whose history and music have been shaped by struggles with Chinese, French, Japanese, and American invasions. You might expect this country's music to be wildly colorful, exotic, and complex - and you would be right. The Music of Vietnam offers listeners a rare opportunity to sample the remarkable variety of traditional Vietnamese music: from ensemble works with a clear Chinese influence to solo pieces for the odd instruments of Vietnam's many tribal minorities.

Volume 1.1 and Volume 1.2 of The Music of Vietnam focus on the traditional music of the Vietnamese people themselves, as opposed to the folk music of the ethnic groups that live in Vietnam's highlands and plateaus. Within the Vietnamese tradition there are many surprises. Works that draw on the trance and percussion music of ancient Buddhist healers appear alongside old Vietnamese theater folk ensembles, but others are definitely a product of musicians who have studied Western classical and pop music. Familiar chord progressions may grace a southerner Vietnamese harvest song, while another work based on religious ritual music may have an acoustic funk backbeat, thanks to the subtle and energetic tradition of Vietnamese percussion.

For Western listeners, especially those for whom Vietnam signifies a war and nothing more, The Music of Vietnam will be an ear-opening experience.

    Actually 4.5 stars.

For those of you who have preconceived notions about Vietnam, just take a look at this excellent disk. A few of these selections just blew my mind away. In general, the music if higher and more delicate-sounding than Chinese, with more extensive use of light percussion, bells, and (my personal favorite traditional Vietnamese instrument) the "dan bau". Some selections are mournful and lamenting, bringing to mind the countless wars wages in Vietnam over the last 1500 years. Others, like "Bird Bringing Good News", simply are bursting with joy - in fact, the instrument used in this piece sounded so much like a real bird that I thought they had actually recorded bird calls and layered it over a traditional orchestra! (unfortunately the sound sample provided here does not adequately display this amazing instrument.) The entire disc swells with the national pride of the Vietnamese. Truly great music!

    4 out of 5 stars a varied delight.......2000-12-31

This is a great introduction to Vietnamese music. While some of the selections may sound harsh or discordant to western ears, this is well worth owning. From the percussive and almost jazzy sounding "Dance of the Horse" to the hauntingly beautiful bent notes of the "Monocord Solo", there are many gems on this collection. Its unclear from the notes, but this seems to have been originally recorded between the 60's and the 80's. My first real introduction to Vietnamese music was through the great Celestial Harmonies recordings which are "smoother" and more modern sounding, but this was a great find !

Except for tracks 2,3,6,13,17, the other tracks are communist war propaganda, anti imperialist, and nationalist doctrine. Modern compositions and ideals were made for the traditional instruments. The sound quality is very good. The performance of the instruments is excellent.
