Customer Reviews:
Great music.......2007-04-05
The pipes, like a few other things, are something you either love or hate. If you are not a Scot, they may sound like someone is scalding cats. If you are Scot, or even partly so, they will make your blood boil. This album certanily does that. It has a mix of traditional and more upbeat music. The traditional "Amazing Grace" is fantastic and the last selection is an upbeat Caribbean rendition that is great.
Not just pipes.......2007-02-12
I purchased this CD looking for bagpipe tracks to listen to. The recording of Amazing Grace is flawless, and inspiring. However - much of this CD is the entire band playing more modern music (of course this album was recorded in the 70's). The pipe playing is excellent, but this is not really a bagpipe CD.
Finally Found It!!.......2005-08-03
I have been searching for a CD of this recording for ages! In 1971, when it was originally released, I was 10 years old and couldn't appreciate the album that my brother played endlessly. As I got older I started to miss it. I found a cassette copy several years ago, but am afraid to use it anymore for fear of it breaking. My brother told me he had found a copy of the CD at his local Borders, and since I don't have one in my neighborhood I checked good old Amazon!! I have just ordered and I am looking forward to receiving it. I'm not a music critic, but after hearing many pipe and drum recordings, this has got to be the best I've ever heard.
A thousand horse cavalry charge!.......2005-06-11
I judge bagpipes by Scotland the Brave. This is magnificant; like a thousand horse cavalry charge. The only problem is that, at 45 seconds, it is too short.
It would have been far better if it had been played once on pipes alone and then again with the brass dropped in behind the pipes. A thousand highlanders screaming across the battlefield, followed by the thousand horse cavalry charge. Just thinking about it makes the hair on the back of my neck stand and my blood pressure go through the roof.
This album is magnificent, but it could have been awesome.
Updated Amazing Grace.......2003-05-09
Having reviewed the original "Amazing Grace" recording by the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards from 1971 it seems that Amazon.com now offers a series of recordings that the bands released in the late 70 and 1980s under the same title. The first half of this CD contains tracks from a 1976 release of the bands entitled "The Lengendary Amazing Grace" In addition to a fine updated version of the now famous tune four years after its original world wide hit, this part of the CD contains some interesting selections for band and pipes. "Una Palma Blanca" is a true example of how the RSDG bands went to great lengths to explore the full combined sound. The regimental band supports the pipes with a variety of modern sounds including an electronic bass guitar which many military bands in fact use for concert purposes today providing as it does a useful Continuo bass line for a military band. "Theme in Glory" and "Turn on the Sun" are additional examples of just how good the RSDG bands had mastered the concept of combing their resources. These are truly exciting pieces to listen too. The regimental band shows its stuff with "Rockout" an arrangement of classic old rock music themes. The pipes and drums provide three medleys and are simply surperb. One can hear that a distinctive change had taken place in the ensemble sound of the pipe band since 1971. The RSDG drummers have incorporated the use of their tenor drums to creat an amazing drummers' accompaniment to the pipes. This innovation would become standard in the piping world, but it owes its origins largely to the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards pipes and drums. Listen to how magificent the pipe band sounds when they first enter to the 6/8 medley starting with "Macneils of Ugdale". You won't find a better sound even today. The Retreat medley starting with "Lochanside" is also amazing. Its worth getting the CD just for those tracks as well as the others. Perhaps the most haunting combined tune is an arrangment of Handel's "Largo" with the solo pipes doubling for the voice parts. Truly beautiful and moving.
The second part of the CD contains recordings of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards from the later 1970s. The listener will note that there is a subtle, but different recorded sound to the bands. They don't come across quite as clear as in the first 12 tracks on the CD. Again, there is the same rich selection of music with imaginative arrangements and unusual sounds. The regimental band gets highlighted more in these remaining tracks and the same versatility is still there. The "Slave Chorus" from Verdi's "Nabucco Opera" gets an interesting modern treatment. "Moonliner Rock March" is another great arrangement of rock tunes that gets the special Royal Scots Dragoon Guards touch. The pipes and drums are back with several combined medley's as well as two solo displays. The drummers show their stuff in "Drummer's Salute" displaying their modern percussion techniques that are still inspiring today for the pipe band world. All in all a worthy continuation of the "Amazing Grace" tradition that was started in 1971 and carred on since then. It's good to see that some of the many recordings the bands made through the years are now on CD. Enjoy the unique sound of the bands of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards who did a lot to popularize Scottish and military band music in general around the world. Truly a legend of "Amazing Grace"

Stay Away.......2006-01-05
While the piping is excellent, the audio, particularly in the first half of the cd is terrible. Nearly 15 minutes are almost indecipherable. I think the recording was made with a hand held mike at the edge of a field.
Edinburgh Military Tattoo.......2001-05-19
The Edinburgh Military Tattoo first started in 1947 with some spirited displays of army piping and dancing. Since that time the show has grown to become a world class act, unfortunately losing some of its traditional elements along the way. The word "Tattoo" is a corruption of the Dutch "Doe den Taptoe" which literary means "turn off the taps", a reference to when a lone drummer would play a "tattoo" or drum roll to signal the inkeeprs to stop serving beer and to summon the troops back to barracks. This ceremony was performed by the British while they were in the low countries during the early 18th century, but it is a custom common to many armies of that time, in particular the various German princeapalities of the day. Over time the Tattoo evolved into a more elaborate affair as more bands and musicians were drawn into its fare. What we have here is the modern development of the form started in previous centuries. The Edinburgh Tattoo is justly famed for its display of massed pipes and bands, and while the recording quality here is not the best, the listener can still get a good idea of the spectacle produced. The original recording of this 1972 show was recorded by EMI, but this version is a knock-off cut that was done by a small American record firm, and which since has been sold about in various forms as a popular item. It is unfortunate that we don't have a better version of the show for listeners than this. The Tattoo produces a recording every year, as well as a video which can be obtained by contacting the Edinburgh Military Tattoo via their website which can be found using any search engine. The good thing about this recording is that it does provide a glimpse of the show in its heyday, where modern fluff and show biz influences had not crept in as much as they have today. For this reason this CD is worth having, and serves as an introduction to this great pageant of the Scottish regiments and the British army. Even though the show is watered down today with pop elements, the grandeur is still there when the massed pipes and drums march out onto the castle esplanade playing the grand old tunes. Even the politically correct producers can't ruin this grand sight, and its hoped they never will!
Not like being there, but a good appetizer.......2000-11-23
The producers and engineers for this CD are to be commended for the remarkable quality they obtained on this outdoor recording! While not quite like being there, it does convey the spirit and energy of the Tattoo.
Pipes and Drums: Amazing Grace.......2000-06-11
I love the sound of the pipes for this one song, and is my favorite.

Here come the pipers.......2005-04-27
Just a note about the sound quality. If this were a Chicago Symphony recording, it would be nearly unbearable. But this is a pipe and drum band, and we are hearing it approach from across the field, down the street or around the corner. This is the kind of sound we hear from a distance with our guts. It excites us as it comes closer and becomes louder. It is outdoor music of the grandest order. The music my English grandmother (in her 80s) would go out on her porch to hear, always bringing her Scottish husband back to her.
The Mighty 48th of Canada.......2003-06-20
Despite what some others have said here this is actually quite a fine recording by the pipes and drums of the 48th Highlanders of Canada. This regimental pipe band remains one of the finest in North America, proof of this is the numerous tattoos it performs in. The selection of pipe music here is both popular and less known. I think a happy mix is acheived here for a change. The recording quality is actaully quite good, the drums and pipes sound well together and the ensemble affect sounds fine to me. I think sometimes people criticize things without really taking other matters into account. Overall one of the better pure pipe music recordings out there by a fine regimental pipe band.
Good selection, unimpressive recording quality.......2000-04-15
As a beginning student of bagpipes I find the large selection of songs helpful, but the quality of the recording seems flat. I've tried turning the volume way up, but then it sounds "tinny" or "sharp" (the volume is lower than for most CDs). And for those who play, the "throws" and similar embellishments are not well articulated...the band plays quite fast.
Avoid at all costs - terrible sound quality.......2000-02-26
The sound of pipes is supposed to stir the soul - not on this CD. This disc is an example of everything that can not be achieved by recording out of doors. The tones are indistinguishable - flat, flat, flat and the side drums often overwhelm the pipes.
Put it simply - the recorded rendition of Amazing Grace, always a highlight of a pipes recording, is more boring than a lullabye, and Scotland the Brave is about as thrilling as the Teacup Ride at Disneyworld.
Don't waste your money.
This is a great CD - the true heart and soul of Scotland!.......1999-07-08
For anyone who loves the 'pipes' this CD is a must-have. It stirs the Scottish soul and the rendition of "Scotland the Brave" will bring you to tears!

Canadian Bagpipes American Brass.......2003-11-11
I recently ordered and have just received the above mentioned album.
THANK YOU........
I ordered it just to have a copy of "Amazing Grace" on bagpipes, but after listening to the album, I am completely blown away. It is perhaps the greatest piece of music I now own. Depending on the song, I can get lifted up, mellowed out, or layed back, again THANK YOU, for having this album. I'm a very satisfied customer.
Not a Great CD.......2003-11-07
This CD was originally longer with more titles. It seems the Altissimo! people after they acquired it from the Canadian Scottish cut out several titles and reduced the overall quality of the CD. Because of this and various other technical factors I would not recommend this CD at this inflated price.

Virtuoso Players Gild the Lilly.......2007-04-19
Reviewers who write that these are fine musicians playing lousy arrangements are correct. That's it exactly. The slower cuts are better than the up-tempo ones. Apparently this CD is a big hit with bagpipe tooters. So be it. The rest of us should pass it by or purchase it used.
Keep looking - there is much better stuff than this.......2005-10-05
This album is a perfect example of how a bad arrangement can ruin great music despite the best efforts of great musicians. Everything about this recording is right; selection, performers, sound engineering. Except that the tracks are horribly over-arranged with all sorts of distracting, subtracting variations and trite bridging passages.
Diasppointed.......2005-07-12
I am not saying the music is bad or the quality is lacking, because it is not. If you are looking for traditional music played in the traditional way, then this CD is not for you. It is like listening to everyone's interpretation when they sing the "Star Spangled Banner". There is no need to jazz things up that were not written to be. The titles are old but the variations on the score have a lot to be desired if you wanted to hear these songs played the way they were meant to be played.
This album is an absolute disaster.......2005-06-08
It's said that music soothes the savage beast, but bagpipes will do just the opposite. They will make the hair on your neck stand on end, your blood pressure go through the roof and prepare you to go to war. This album does neither.
The one piece which should most strongly produce the desired result is Scotland the Brave. In this album it is three minutes and twenty seven seconds, the first minute an ten of which are dedicated to fanfare. After that an orchestra plays some stylized version and, I think, I can detect a hint of bagpipes in there somewhere. When one has heard it done "correctly", one can recognize this as a total disaster.
Amazing Grace by the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards has a version that is just about right. (And that selection gives one the ability to listen to a sample. I can see why this one doesn't!)
Take My Advice, I'm Only Tryin' to School Ya -.......2004-07-07
I bought this album based on the rave reports of the other reviewers, and could NOT be more pleased with the result. Although not Scottish, I am a long-time bagpipe lover, and this album evokes visions of the Black Watch and other highland pipers moving through their intricate paces. The music is an aural feast, and the sound quality is excellent. I keep it in the CD player in the car and find that a quick drive or a long commute both become pleasures when I'm listening to it. Take my advice - if you have even a slight interest in pipes, drums or brass, you're going to love this album. (This is the first time I have ever written a review; it's a very compelling album!)

Ever wondered about the rest of the words to "Auld Lang Syne?" You'll hear them on Dougie MacLean's guitar-ballad version, which closes Brave Hearts, a collection of Scottish and Scottish-inflected music. In MacLean's hands, the rousing, traditional New Year's song becomes wistfully low-key, with a gentle intensity that undercuts anything a crowd of celebrants in Times Square might be capable of. There are plenty of other surprises on Brave Hearts as well, such as Blair Douglas's "Nelson Mandela's Welcome to the City of Glasgow," which successfully combines Scottish and South African musical traditions; the result works far better than one might initially expect. Popular-style songs, such as "Sleepy Maggie" (Ashley MacIsaac) and "E Horo" (Mary Jane Lamond), are complemented by such nods to tradition as "Walking the Plank" (Skyedance) and "Southpark House/Tarruing Teann An Crios/Kevin's Celtic Chasm" (Anna Murray). And pieces like the fast, furious, dramatic "B Minor" (Leahy) integrate piano with the more recognizably traditional fiddles and drums. Brave Hearts presents music that is neither staunchly traditional, nor cut off from its roots; instead, the collection combines the best of both worlds. --Genevieve Williams
Customer Reviews:
I agree - this is a good CD.......2005-08-26
I have had this CD for a few years now and still get much enjoyment out of it. It is a good blend of some very inspiring music.
I would recommend it to the Scot/Celtic fan out there looking for that right inspirational CD.
Vibrant!.......2003-05-25
My favorite Celtic compilation album of all! I don't think I could describe "Bravehearts" any better than its back cover does: "proud, passionate, provocative--keeping tradition alive by refusing to let it stand still ..." Full of energy, bounce and spirit, all the numbers on this CD, both lively and driving or poignant and slow, have an intensity about them that just sweeps over you. The artists featured are: Leahy, Capercaillie, Blair Douglas, Mary Jane Lamond, Ashley MacIsaac, Dougie MacLean, Karen Matheson, Old Blind Dogs, Anna Murray, Skyedance and Tannas. It's hard to pick a favorite track or two here--I like every one, though Blair Douglas and Leahy really shine. Come along and celebrate the spirit and mystique of Scotland with these innovative new musicians! If you enjoy "Bravehearts", you'll also enjoy the up-tempo music of another compilation CD, Green Linnet's "Playing With Fire".
Get to Know them.......2001-05-10
Nice album for getting to know the new Scottish artists. I play it for inspiration with other favorites. Good value.
Awesome!.......2000-11-03
This is the first CD I have ever purchased that would fall under the "International" category. I heard a few tracks at a dance convention and fell in love with it. The entire CD is great, especially Blair Douglas' tracks.
A+++
Scottish Music Alive In The Present.......2000-09-24
This is an extensive and eclectic collection of contemporary Scottish music from Cape Breton to Perthshire.
Familiar names include Ashley MacIsacc with "Sleepy Maggie," Mary Jane Lamond with "E Horo," and Leahy with "B Minor." Capercaille contributes the song, "Ailein Dunn," which was featured in the film ROB ROY.
Blair Douglas contributes two percussion-driven tracks which successfully combine Scottish-style drumming with African-inspired drumming.
The collection ends appropriately with a rendition of Robbie Burns' "Auld Lang Syne," by Dougie Maclean.
