Customer Reviews:
Feed your subcontinental nostalgia.......2006-09-21
The content of the discs are recordings taken from various radio stations in India by Alan and Richard Bishop in 1989 and 1996.
The first CD contains discrete songs and pieces from eight different stations to the north. Musically, it is as diverse as Indian radio - and as enjoyable, which I intend as a double-edged compliment. The second CD is more a cut-and-paste collection, fragments of songs, adverts, radio plays and so on. Like the snatches of sounds and music heard from a bus meandering through a bazaar, great beauty is heard amongst the chatter and pop kitsch before it disappears into the next sound. Subcontinental is mixed with western, English with Indian, old sounds with new. Like India, it's best to let it wash over you without trying to cling to anything in passing.
You could listen to these CDs to bring back the nation you visited or left behind, but not as a way of hearing or learning more of the vast pantheon of Indian music per se. Indian music, old and new, requires a different set of paths to explore - these CDs are to feed your subcontinental nostalgia. I like them, and consider them worthwhile on the premise I've stated above. Smoke 'em if you got 'em, India-heads - enjoy.
