5 out of 5 stars The second with Carlos Maria Trinidade........2007-06-29

You will listen the difference, is not traditional fado sometimes, but this singer, you know, is one of the greatest voice of fado.
O silencio da guitarra open the cd but the greatest moments are Cavaleiro monge, the words are from a poem of Fernando Pessoa, but the best song here is for me Vielas de Alfama who talk about the famous place in Lisbon where the fado was born.

5 out of 5 stars Passionate.......2005-08-07

Beautiful, beautiful music. 29 year-old Mariza revives Portugal's Fado music. Fado was originally brought to Portugal as a dance by African slaves in the 19th century; later, as the Portugal empire slowly declined, white poets, singers and players began to create a new type of music. Fado songs are generally accompanied by one classical guitar and embody lyrics filled with themes of death, despair, heartache, betrayal and destiny. Mariza's interpretations are passionate and convey these themes even to those who do not undertand the language.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Fado!.......2004-10-07

Mariza hits again with her deep and colorful voice the classic popular fado. Perharps the nearest future Rainha do Fado. After Fado em mim; (still her best album) Fado Curvo hits new roads. Once you listen her voice you just become fan and addict to fado. Portugal has probably the best female singers in the world, Misia, Dulce Pontes, Mafalda, etc. real divas that make me think I'm very affortunate in speake portuguese and share not only their voices, and melodies, but the feeling that embrace each of this beatiful songs.

4 out of 5 stars Princess Mariza.......2004-07-13

I fell in love with her voice when I heard her "fado tango" Por Ti on "Fado: Exquisite Passion" compilation. I was fascinated by her expressiveness, by her delivery built on contrast (i think CONTRAST is the best word to describe Mariza)- now her voice is so heartrending and dramatic that it pierces your heart, and then, at the very next note, soft as silk, smoother than smooth, effortlessly following the lovely melody, and the intonation even a bit flirtatious...

Fado Curvo, produced by Carlos Maria Trindade from Madredeus, is full of intoxicating, catchy tunes with extremely beautiful arrangements, often with notable influence of jazz and African music, when you listen to them you can almost see lonesome roads along the sea at sunset, red-roofed houses of Lisbon, vast sandy beaches and moonlit valleys... My favourite song is, perhaps, Cavaleiro Monge, sombre and melancholic, with lyrics by no less a person than Fernando Pessoa. Vielas de Alfama is dark and velvety like the nights of Lisbon, Retrato is sheer sensuality, Entre o Rio e a Razao is life-asserting and sunny, Deserto, with an incredible muted trumpet and fliscorn, is deeply dramatic... in this last one, Mariza's voice is most expressive. She is not only a marvellous singer but also a good actress, and her only drawback is that - perhaps due to the lack of experience - she often overacts. With a vocal agility like that, she can attain a better command of her voice (and her temperament)and find the best way to convey the mood of each song. She just needs a bit more sense of proportion and, as it has already been said, better choice of material. And with all that, Princess Mariza is sure to become the true new Queen of Fado.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2004-04-11

Hello,

I bought her first album in 2002 and love it. So, as soon as I saw that Mariza had a new album out I snapped it up. This is an excellent album and she has an absolutly beautiful voice. I am not Portuguese, nor do I speak the language; but her albums (and good music regardless of the language) transends those barriers easily. It makes a great intro album to the Fado genre!

5 out of 5 stars Guitarra Portuguesa.......2007-07-16

This is a great CD for everyone. Carlos Paredes plays a ten string guitar
with an amazing performance.

5 out of 5 stars a cd for any guitar player...this was a guitar Master.......2005-05-22

Carlos Paredes was a very talented guitar player with lots of soul.....
He plays this wonderfull traditional guitar of 12 strings like noone else...mainly this guitar is used on "Fado" (dark and missing lyrics songs)
He is famouse because of this song "Verdes Anos" and i have to say it's worth this all album!

From what i've heard this cd was offered to Ben Harper in one of his shows here and he got blown away!!!

Rest in peace Carlos..your music will live forever

5 out of 5 stars Glorious and bittersweet.......2005-02-19

Somehow, when you're in the throes of depression, listening to truly great depressing music is a beautiful catharsis. I mean no offense in saying that this album contains truly great depressing music, up there with John Dowland and the best of Chris Isaak.

Paredes was (alas, he's no longer with us) a virtuoso of the Portuguese guitar, and this album shows his skill as a composer and performer beautifully. "Cancão Verdes Anos" is by itself worth the price of admission.

5 out of 5 stars A master of the guitar.......2000-12-30

I have loved great guitar playing all my life and I have to say that Carlos Paredes is one of the best in the world, and definitely of Portugal. This CD exemplifies that great tradition of excellent guitar playing that is present throughout Portugal and now has spread to many other parts of the world. I would highly recommend this CD to anyone who likes to listen to great guitar playing from a man that knows how to play. I would recommend this CD to anyone even if you are not Portuguese, you will not be disappointed.

If traditional New Age music gives you the willies or if you are already a fan of vocalists such as Marta Sebestyen or Enya, Madredeus's Teresa Salgueiro will bewitch you with her velvety-smooth chanteuserie backed by a classical guitar duo, acoustic bass, and sythesizers. Madredeus, a quintet of Portuguese musicians, take their name from their former rehearsal space, a convent whose abbreviated moniker translates loosely as "Mother God" or "Holy Mother." And though the material on O Paraiso is not religious, the spirit in which Madredeus make their music is full of reverence and deep affection. The strings are water, the voice is wind. Listening to the record is floating, dancing, swimming, swaying--all while sitting perfectly still. --Paige La Grone

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting :.......2006-05-28

I've grown to love the beautiful music from my mother's homeland, "fado". This album by the group Madredeus is beautiful! The music is haunting and strange, while being very soothing. I understand and speak Portuguese, but everyone will get this. "O Paraiso" means "the paradise", this album surely lives up to it's title, enjoy!!!

4 out of 5 stars Soaring, angelic soprano; soulful guitars, synthesizers.......2006-03-23

Sometimes irritatingly New Age Euro-pop. More often a satisfying juxtaposition of Teresa Salgneiro's soaring, angelic soprano and a soulful accompaniment of classical guitars and synthesizers, in med-tempo and (merely) pretty melodies. Growing on me. Stand-outs: tr 6--A praia do mar (sounds like pop variation on simple, stately/courtly, yearning dance). tr 7--O fin da Estrada (for ambiguous meter); tr 8-Agora. tr 12-O sonho (voice soars over a web of strings in lovely melody). [70:08]

5 out of 5 stars I don't understand..........2006-03-21

...a word of what they are saying.

What I do understand is, for me, this newly discovered sound called fado. This is a mesmerizing tranquil cd that is pure spiritualism. This is some of the finest acoustic guitar ensembles I have heard in quite some time. The angelic voice, haunting at times, is one that enters your viscera.

I started out with one cd, then two, now I must have all of Maderdeus' work. It makes me want to go to Lisbon just to see if there is more of this lurking in the out-of-the-way back alley clubs.

I made the mistake of ordering two of these cd's at the same time. I was going to send one back. But after my wife heard this incredible music she snatched it up and put it in her vehicle.

This music is not for everyone. It is only for one person...you.

Enter fado. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars breathtaking, hauntingly beautiful.......2006-01-26

This whole album can be most aptly described as brilliant. Although the musical line-up is relatively simple, the music is amazingly rich and sophisticated in melodic content. There are almost no weak moments and each and every bit of the songs have timeless and uplifting aura that encapsulates you from the very beginning. The vocals by Teresa Salgueiro is a seminal example of how poetic lyrics can transcend beyond their inherent rendition. Along with flawless orchestration which overcomes the intricacies of merging strong instrumental content with female vocal, Madredeus excels in conveying the melanchonic mood of Portugal even for those who don`t speak Portugese. The overall effect is, however, universal and ethereal...

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking.......2004-08-13

I was introduced to this music by a friend of mine and wasn't sure I'd really like it, but when she began the music for me I just didn't know I could feel so uplifted by music. Teresa's voice is mesmerizing and a pure joy to listen to. This is one of their greatest collections. Although Andorinha da Primavera is my all-time favorite for personal reasons, the entire CD is great to listen to and find your own little private spot in your mind.

5 out of 5 stars The most noble voice.......2004-05-28

Victoria de los Angeles' voice not only has a silken quality and fascinating glow to it but it is one of the most regal, noble sounds you'll ever hear. She illuminated those moments of quietness, gentleness and noble, feminine pride and elegance like no other soprano before and after her. This release of her "Spanish Songs" has never been surpassed. The songs of her homeland seem to have been written for her beautiful instrument alone, she fills every piece with special beauty and charm, religious flair and beautiful, noble simplicity. Buy this recording and see why Victoria is one of the best sopranos ever having come from Spain.

5 out of 5 stars A special Dignity and an Unfailing Beauty of Voice........2000-09-17

This set offers four generously-filled CDs comprising almost 140 Spanish songs from Victoria de los Angeles' repertoire. To all of them she brings a special dignity and an unfailing beauty of voice. The earliest recordings date from 1950 and the last is the items she sang at the opening of the Barcelona Olympics in 1992. Yes, you will find the ubiquitous "Clavelitos!" here, and a later version of "La maya el ruisenor" from "Goyescas". The enclosed booklet provides illuminating notes by Lionel Salter, who also translated many of the texts which are also included. Accompanists include Gerald Moore and Alicia de Larrocha, and Victoria de Los Angeles provides a guitar accompaniment herself in one song. The last track of all, a zapateado from a zarzuela, recorded live in New York, must almost have brought the house down.

5 out of 5 stars Nice collection of operatic dances.......2004-12-12

This is another wonderful issue from the naxos opera collection. The dances are the standards that appear on many other collections, but not a such a low price. These dances are all enchantingly played.

    5 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable!.......2002-11-05

The tunes in John Playford's The English Dancing Master have been recorded frequently and are a staple in English country dance circles. Jeremy Barlow and the Broadside Band present here some of the best renditions of these tunes that are currently available on CD. I strongly recommmed this CD for anyone interested in Renaissance music, country dance music, or just plain ole' fun music.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely beautiful music.......2005-09-14

The music on this CD is beautiful, ethereal, gorgeous. Recorders, string instruments, women's voices, and percussion all weave together with haunting melodies and rhythm.

Strangely enough, I had a hard time buying this CD. First I tried to buy it new through Amazon. After delaying my order for several months, they finally cancelled my order because they could not get the CD (I don't blame Amazon for this - they sent me e-mails every now and then asking if I was still willing to wait). I then managed to buy it used from a dealer through Amazon. It was worth the wait!

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Greatest Albums Of All Time!.......2002-03-06

Simply put, this album is one of the three or four best albums released in the last twenty years. If you don't believe me, buy it. Then you will believe me. If not, you must have something seriously wrong with your hearing, soul, or basic humanity (but that's just my opinion).

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent Medieval Music.......2000-08-30

This exquisite recording is one of the best examples of Medieval music I've heard in years.

The group, Ensemble Alcatraz, made a great splash about six or eight years ago on the Nonesuch label, but disappeared from view for quite some time. It's great that a premium label like Dorian has brought them back, since they're more inspired than ever - and the recording quality is superb.

Even better, the women's vocal ensemble KITKA lends a haunting sense of ethereal beauty - it's a real showcase of how women's spirituality can come alive with through an inspired performance of medieval music.

Anybody who loves Anonymous 4 will love this recording - but in this case, the addition of a wide range of instruments (harp, percussion, vielle, etc.), virtuosically played adds wonderful colour and a sense of exotic exitement to the experience. Highly recommended! How can music this old sound so alive, so moving, so exquisitely beautiful and contemporary?!

For most people, fado is a diva-driven acoustic folk style based on dramatic Portuguese love poems. Madredeus, however, creates a more subdued but equally beautiful version of the music. The award-winning band does have a woman singer, but Teresa Salgueiro isn't prone to the histrionics of some fadistas. Instead, she leans toward a subtle conversational style with a bit of classical music composure. The band follows Salgueiro's lead (or vice versa) by eschewing the typically fiery guitar accompaniment in favor of moody ambiance. Moreover, the band writes much of its own material here instead of adapting love poems. With 11 albums released domestically and over 20 years together, Madredeus has worked out all the kinks; nonetheless, it adds a few wrinkles of its own--"No Meu Jardim (Sementes a Terra)" has a lilting reggae groove, and "O Canto de Saudade" dances to a samba rhythm. Those looking for something more conventionally fado will have no bones to pick with "Fado das Duvidas." --Tad Hendrickson

Every Madredeus CD is worth 5 stars. You don't have to know Portuguese to enjoy their music. The fado-folk style of music they play is, in my opinion, better than the traditional style of fado. The instrumentation is superb, and Teresa Salgueiro's voice is simply beautiful, truly "music to the ears". If you have not owned any Madredeus CD, I recommend Antologia which contains many of their best work.
