Jacques Brel achieved fame through his performances in France, but he was born in Belgium and identified himself strongly with his linguistically divided native land. His acidly humorous lyrics target the hypocrisies of groups as well as individuals, with special attention to Belgium's Flemish population, the military, and the bourgeoisie in general. At the same time, some of Brel's most affecting songs contain passages in Flemish, and many of his lyrics show a pronounced fondness for his "flat country." Brel's irreverent approach to life was sharply reflected in his music and films and can be compared to that of Bob Dylan in the U.S. and Vladimir Vysotsky in Russia, with whom he also shared a capacity for tongue-twisting patter not heard since the early days of Danny Kaye. Brel was the most legitimate Ambassador of the irreverence made song. His moods, inspiration and heartfelt expression far beyond his dissipate existence are solid arguments to think to acquire this selection.

"Ne Me Quitte Pas" is his famous torch song "Don't Leave Me", in which Brel uses exquisite imagery to press his suit with a girl who has already left him, descending in the end into abject desperation as he struggles to maintain a link, any link at all, with the object of his love. Frank Sinatra was moved to sing an English version of this song ("If you go away"), which unfortunately doesn't do justice to the gorgeous poetry of the French original. This is my favorite song of the entire Jacques Brel repertoire because of the power and the haunting beauty of the lyrics, Brel's impassioned voice and the evocative music!

"Les Vieux" evokes a ticking clock as a metaphor for the passage of time. It paints a grim portrait of life in the twilight years, set to the beat of a grandfather clock, a triangle and a small orchestra.

"La Quete" is better known as "The Impossible Dream". This is Brel's version of the song also crooned by Elvis Presley, Andy Williams and The Supremes, and originally created by Mitch Leigh and Joe Darion. I don't find Brel's version as satisfying as the original in English, however, at least for native English speakers.

"The Plat Pays" (The Flat Country) is Brel's nostalgic homage to his home country of Belgium, sung with great affection. Although he grew up in Belgium, he spent almost his entire musical career in Paris, France.

"Amsterdam" is one of his most famous songs about the sailors who disembark in this Dutch port and how they deal with the vicissitudes of their lonely lives and the dreams that haunt them once they reach the shore.

Great introduction to Brel's music..........2003-04-14

With all of the immature culture bashing going on between the French and the United States these days it's a shame that some on this side of the water may miss out on Jacques Brel. Of course Brel was Belgian, but most Americans won't know the difference.

Brel was a singer/songwriter of shocking breadth. His voice ranges from powerful to tender. His songs have incredible range from fairly typical sounding accordian music to productions involving full orchestra. If you're not accustomed to this kind of music, it will grow on you. The sincerity of Brel's singing is enough to win anyone over.

I was introduced to Brel through a co-worker who once lived in Belgium. I asked him for recommentations of music sung in French, and Brel was the first name he mentioned. He brought in a CD for me and after hearing "J'arrive" I was instantly hooked. According to him, "J'arrive" is a song to death. Brel is singing "I'm coming, I'm coming, of course I'm coming" to death.

Brel's version of "The Impossible Dream" ("La Quete") is surprisingly uncliched and fresh sounding. "Le Plat Pays" or "The Flatlands" or "Lowlands" is about Brel's native Belgium. "Ne Me Quitte Pas" or "Don't Leave Me" is a passionate plea that builds slowly, creshendoes, then fades out. It's one of the best songs on the CD.

This CD was the only one I could readly find in CD stores in my area. According to my French-speaking co-worker, this one includes a lot of Brel's most famous songs (though there were a few he had never heard as well).

If you're looking for great music sung in French, you've found it.

Gorgeous music even if you don't know French.......2001-03-17

Music is indeed a universal language, because even if you don't understand a word of it, the beauty and power of Jacques Brel's voice and music shine through and make this a worthwhile, if different, listening experience. And if you do understand the lyrics, you will conclude that Brel is among the great songwriters of his generation, laying bare his soul and expressing eloquently a great range of emotions and insights into the human condition. I can't claim to have heard all the various Brel collections out there but this is certainly an outstanding compilation.

Beuty and drama in a voice.......2000-07-04

Along with "Le feuilles mortes" and, of course "La vie en rose", I think "Ne me quitte pas" is the most beautiful french song ever, which have been recorded by many different singers (including Frank Sinatra, in his english version called "If you go away"). Here you can find the original version, in the worderful and heart-breaking voice of it's original composer Jacques Brel, but also other marvellous songs such as "J'arrive", "Au suivant" and "Jef". This compilation gathers the best of Brel's work, for any french music lover.

Such a beautiful voice, such great music.......2005-02-13

A few years ago I was in a kitchen store on the Left Bank and heard the most wonderful singing on a recording. I asked the shopkeeper who that was and she said "Barbara" with a look of amazement that I didn't know. I went to a music store, wondering "Barbara who?" and then found this album along with several others. I bought this and it continues to be one of my favorites of my hundreds of CDs. If you love a beautiful voice, if you love emotion, if you love Paris, then you will love this album.

Indeed, a very good collection of Dalida songs. So many true gems on one CD. Aside from the beautiful "L'amour Et Moi" (mentioned below), and which I think isn't even the best work on this CD, this collection is rich with those highly personal and passionate songs that were this Diva's trademark. From the highly personal songs which no one else could have sung, and yet almost everybody can relate to (like the astounding "A Ma Maniere", and "J'm'appelle Amnesie"); to those most human declarations about life and the human experience: from the richness of being a woman at forty ("Une Femme A Quarante Ans"), to the ugly endings of beautiful loves stories ("Fini, La Comedie"), to songs about struggles in life ("Partir Ou Mourir"), lulls in life, lows ("Le Slow De Ma Vie"), near-halts, but it still all goes on nevertheless ("Et La Vie Continuera"). Add to that her gorgeous eulogy of a song to the Belgian singer Jaques Brel, "Il Pleut Sur Bruxelles", and the sweeping rhythm and fire of "La Feria", and you're certainly getting a more-than-a-good deal in one CD!

This is a very touchy CD. All songs are beautiful; L'amour et moi, Partir ou mourir, Une Femme a 40ans are quite extraordinary and Fabulous! What can I say...Bravo Dalida, This is a real Gem.

Not my favorite Dalida CD but the song "L'amour et moi" or "The Love Inside" from Barbra Steisands GUILTY is absolutely heart wrenching. At one point you feel the emotion pouring out of her voice. Couple other beautiful songs as well as a couple "dated".

Early 70s French vocal pop.......2003-12-21

This is a collection of French ballads and pop songs by the famous chanteuse of the sensual Je T'Aime (Moi Non Plus). There are three duets with Serge Gainsbourg - the aforementioned classic plus La Décadanse and 69 Année Erotique, while Gainsbourg had a hand in writing and/or arranging most of the tracks.

The opening number Quoi was the theme of the TV series Cinecitta and the breathy English song Yesterday Yes A Day comes from the soundtrack of the film Madame Claude. In the song Ex Fan Des Sixties, Birkin lists her favorite pop stars, including The Birds, The Doors and Jim Morrison, The Moody Blues, The Animals, the individual Beatles, Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Elvis, Otis Redding, Janis Joplin and T. Rex.

Je Taime is of course a gem and none of the other attempts at eroticism equals its timeless appeal. My favorites include the tuneful numbers La Décadanse, Mon Amour Baiser, Fuir Le Bonheur and Ballade De Johnny-Jane. Those who like late sixties and early seventies vocal pop like Mary Hopkin, Françoise Hardy and the early, folky Marianne Faithfull will enjoy the work of Jane Birkin.

With the exception of those I have mentioned, most songs unfortunately lack catchy tunes, rendering them less than memorable. But this album is still a pleasant listening experience and it is great to finally hear some of the other work of the moaning singer of Je T'Aime!

If you like GAINSBOURG, this record is worth buying because most of the best songs with JANE are there.It includes the funny RACCROCHEZ C'EST UNE ERREUR in which a sex maniac calls a woman and gives her his fantasy talk;the alternate version of the classic JE T'AIME MOI NON PLUS, and the beautifully sad QUOI in which JANE'S charm is at her best.JANE is the most celebrated of the so called GAINSBOURG muses, and she first met SERGE while making the movie LA PISCINE in 1968.

Alan Stivell.......2006-02-26

Alan Stivell is a performer most notable for his celtic harp, who combines the old and the new with grace and precision. He has amassed a huge knowledge of past musical idioms and translates them into modern relevance with his passionate rhythems and lyrics that sometimes border on despairing, and which are always heartfelt. My only fault is that I can't find every one of his albums; some have gone out of print. Master Serie is a collection of remixes of works he produced in the 1970s. His reworkings of previous material are as interesting as the originals. I wish more people in Americal knew of his music.

Outstanding Compilation of Stivell's Early Material!.......2001-12-10

This compiliation disk emphasizes Stivell's early work (the first 4-5 albums or so from 1971-74), which is widely regarded as his best and most exciting period. The selection of songs is excellent, reflecting both his more more delicate folksy side (e.g. "Reflets", "Ys", "Suite des Montagnes") and his more rocking side ("Pop Plinn",
"Hep Brezhoneg", etc.). What makes this compilation especially notable is that it contains studio versions of "Tri Martolod", "Pop Plinn", and "The Wind of Keltia"-- which were released as singles and are unavailable on any of Stivell's 'regular' CDs. (Live versions of these tunes are available on _Live at the Olympia_, but those who want to hear the studio versions have no choice but to get this disk).

In sum, an outstanding compilation of Stivell's early 70s material. For those looking for a general overview of his whole life's career, the 2-CD compilation _Zoom_ is better... but if you're looking to check out Stivell's *best* material, the 'Master Serie' compilation is the place to start.

French 60's Easy Pop.......2004-09-28

Nicely remastered compilation of Marie Laforet's 60's songs.
She has a strong voice and most of this compilation shows it to good effect. On this CD are great versions of songs such as "Viens Sur La Montagne" and "Sifle, Sifle Ma Fille" , which she sings in her sexy and resonant voice. Despite what other reviewers have written, this particular CD does not contain her screamin' and cool version of "Paint It Black" by the Rolling Stones. That song can be found on "Femmes de Paris vol. 1". However if you have already had a taste of Continental 60's pop, especially the wonderful Francoise Hardy, then you will also enjoy this compilation of Marie Laforet.

The Best of Laforet.......2001-11-06

I discovered Marie Laforet in the cut-out bin years ago now, and fell in love with her light pop-oriented music. It's catchy, fun and she had a voice well suited for radio.

I bought her on CD when she first became available here, and I've enjoyed the CD many times since. Of course, Que Calor La Vida is terrific fun, but then so is her version of 'Paint It Black'. There's really not a bad track on here, and it can be fun to listen to even for non-French speakers when they recognize songs translated from English. For me this is light French pop of the 70's at its best. It's a shame there's not a photo of her on the sales page, as she was quite beautiful also!

The music of Marie Laforet.......2000-03-20

The first time when a fellow Korean nurse lent me some of her music cassettes including that of Marie Laforet, I never expected that I would be mesmerized by the singer's voice and music. From that day on (that was year 1405 in Saudi Arabia) I have been searching the record stores in our country but in vain... until today when I browsed in the amazon net. The music of Marie Laforet is so soothing that it penetrates my mind and soul.
