Language Of The Soul

Editorial Reviews

Audrey DeLaMartre, Minnesota Phoenix, March 2000
"Somehow renews itself between listening sessions - a rare privelege to hear such quality today."

Product Description
'Language of the Soul' marks the return of the glorious Anael sound, hailed by critics across North America as being stunningly unique yet comfortably familiar, and is the Canadian female vocalist's 3rd album of original prose and songs. After 'Light of Refinement' (5 months in NAV's Top 35) and her sophomore release 'Unconditional' (now licensed in six countries), 'LotS' showcases Anael's inspired vision in no less than five different languages, including Hebrew, Italian, Latin, English and her maternal tongue, French.

Throughout, Anael's pristine and pure singing tone anchors a sweeping, majestic sonic landscape, at once both soothing and uplifting, while painting an intimate, revealing portrait of humanity's triumphant and resilient spirit. As her voice drifts seemingly effortlessly through past, present and future, she unravels her tales, an ancient Hebrew prayer, an Italian aria, each sound and breath becoming one with the source, one within the listener.

By album's close, Anael has convincingly unveiled the timeless mystery, that which in the end needs no words: the universal language, the language - of the soul.

5 out of 5 stars Alias le Cinquième As.......2006-06-11

This album speaks. It speaks about different messages, whether it be the current hostility of the world, where people resort to using missiles to end crises, or if it's about a modern girl... how she spends her cash money.

In this album, the MC's beats progress... to somewhat of a mix between classic and modern. He recorded this album in Russia, which explains the Cyrillic symbols decorated over the case and the CDs themselves (plural if you get the Limited Edition). Many of the songs on "Mach 6" are filled with orchestrations: a quartet in "Souvenir", among other things, like consistent fusions of hip-hop and symphony.

I found this CD wasn't the same as Cinquieme As... not all artists' efforts come off that way. Most notably, MC Solaar's just about the only person on this album. Sure, he's got his choruses covered by Eric K-Roz, Audrey Chanu, and Julia Sarr, but there's one thing missing... the same kingly spirit of Cinquieme As. Of course, if you want to take it back a bit, nothing about the man himself has changed. He's just cooling down, and it is here he makes wise introspection his number one task. From what I understand, he was pissed off when he made Cinquieme As.

Production is handled solely by Claude MC (that's Solaar), Eric K-Roz, and Alain J. That being said, there's not as much diversity in the beats or liveliness as there was in Cinquieme As (as part of that progression from hip-hop to classic-hop). "La Vie est Belle" is a classic, though, following in the footsteps of "Solaar Pleure" in more than one way. But, as for sounds, you've got the aforementioned, and a bit of jazz worked in with "J'Connais Mon Role".

Another thing that's really interesting is the fact that Solaar took lines from Cinquieme As and made them into new songs. "Hijo de Africa"? That's Spanish, as mentioned in "Hasta la Vista Mi Amor". "Jardin d'Eden"? Mentioned in/sampled from "Solaar Pleure". And, there's probably some I haven't caught yet. If you manage to get past that, you'll find that this is a solid album. I've caught myself waiting for another album that probably isn't coming.

Despite all of the times I might have implied that Cinquieme As may be the better album, I can always find myself coming back to the tranquility and simplicity of Mach 6 (I had it first). Consider it taken down a few notches... 'cause, there really is nothing bad coming from this album.

Either way, if you want this one, get it now... because, it is one of the cheapest listed here; and, you'd be surprised how quickly these Solaar albums sell out.

5 out of 5 stars Very Groovy.......2006-03-09

I first heard MC Solaar on Sex and the City. This CD is funky and beautiful. It's hip hop with an international flair.

5 out of 5 stars More catchier than earlier work, but still edgy.......2004-04-21

If the first song on Cinquieme As, "Solaar Pleure" was an eloquent description of hate and despair, then it's opposite can be found in "Jardin d'Eden" on Mach 6. In fact, all of Mach 6 seems to be a lighter, more positive album in response to the darkness and hardness of Cinquieme As. Indeed, in some tracks on Mach 6 he samples songs from Cinquieme As, as if to bring out the contrast between these two, seemingly polar opposite, albums. Don't get me wrong. I liked Cinquieme As, but it was heavy (in terms of sound, lyrics, mood). But what Solaar has lost in heaviness of sound, he hasn't lost in edginess. On the surface, Mach 6 is peppier, with more upbeat rhythms and catchy tunes, but don't let that fool you. The lyrics are just as serious and thought-provoking as they have always been. The music sounds happier, but Solaar is his same old cynical but eloquent self.

Another thing that struck me about Mach 6 is its more international flavor. "Au Pays du Ghandi" picks up Indian beats, while "Cash Money" is a great modern samba, and "Hijo d'Africa" is one of the best Afro-Latin songs I've ever heard. This is not the first time Solaar has used ethnic sounds and patterns, but it's the first time he's been able to do so beyond the superficial level. In Mach 6, Solaar proves that he understands the music of other cultures, that he can break it down, explore its nuances, and then re-construct it in his own way.

If you like Solaar, this is a must-own album. Truly brilliant, from a brilliant musician.

5 out of 5 stars Mach 6 Great album!!!.......2004-01-13

MC Solaar does it again. Mach 6 is a great album from start to finish. I have only had a chance to listen to it a few times so far, but its fast becoming my favorite album of his . It was worth every dollar... if you liked Fifth Ace, this one is a must get.

This is the worst cd I've ever purchase it only have one good song on it.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent if slightly inappropriate comeback........2003-07-17

"Love Language" was Teddy's first post-accident album and a strong comeback. Most of the songs, however, were more MOR-pop than R&B (which I find rather strange) but this may have been the direction Teddy planned on going had he not suffered that horrendous car accident.

5 out of 5 stars Should have been on the greatest hits compilations.......2002-10-10

I don't know why some of these songs aren't on his greatest hits CDs. Love 4/2, In My Time, they are great songs. It's most likely due to copywright laws and ownership.

5 out of 5 stars Did you know it's a soundtrack?.......2000-05-03

I learned about this beautiful music via the movie Choose Me - a great comedy of errors and misbegotten choices, for which Teddy provides smooth and sexy ambiance.

5 out of 5 stars Simply The Best.......1999-12-28

There isn't a woman alive who shouldn't listen to Teddy sing beggingly "Stay With Me" and also the duet with Whitney.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Another Superb Anael CD.......2001-01-04

Well, boy was I surprised when I went to the CD shop and foundAnael had another CD out... ... But I wasn't surprised that this CD was almost as good as her other two. "Come Raggio di Soleil" is a peaceful introduction to the disc with angelic harp and string plucking. "Lingering Stratus" sounds like the title, dark and mysterious but strangely comforting. With Anael's angelic vocals soaring over the track it becomes truly magickal. "Who Made Thee Flesh" is an emotional waltz tune which evokes feeling somewhere deep within me. "The Tower Of Babel" is a mysterious song that brings to mind images of wading through fog on a cool, middle eastern night. "Chir Hashirim" brings ancient Hebrew influences into the fold. I don't know if Anael is Jewish, but the combination of ancient Hebrew with angelic new age vocals certainly works here. "Hymne a la Paix" is simplistically arranged at first but builds into a sweetly, richly arranged song. Chord changes from major to minor further accent the majestic quality. "Part Of Our Essence" relaxes with the bubbly sounds of a mountain stream and simple piano chords. "In The Key Of Wisdom" is a guitar-based song which I feel would not be too out of place on a movie soundtrack. "A Kind Of Light" is a hopeful sounding piece, floating along on Anael's vocals. "Crastina Die" has an ominous sounding beginning, and vocals in latin help the atmosphere, but overall it becomes more uplifting and is such a beautiful song. So now I sit here, waiting for her next CD to come out, and I guarantee it will be worth the wait.

5 out of 5 stars Language of the Soul.......2000-06-13

This album is a like a little slice of heaven. Undescribably beautiful, Anael's voice makes me forget all my day to day worries. I guarantee that you will love this album, as well as her 2 previous ones. Discover the sound of divinity.

4 out of 5 stars japan has good taste in hip hop.......2006-01-29

yo its the legendary dj honda,he's very talented,he really does his thing on the production, and its sad that people from other countries know more about hip hop than us americans, its because we take it for granted, and we get spoiled from it,thats the problem with this country, but other than that, its a good album worth checking out, there was a couple of songs i couldve done without like guru's what you expected, sorry guru you don't sound as good without primo, and f that, and they have the nerve to put the instrumental for what you expected, and it wasn't that good, but other than that the songs are solid and what makes this album special is that its an east coast album no other regions(thank god).

4 out of 5 stars it tight!!.......2002-01-06

DJ Honda is one of the best DJ's around..the cd has some real feel good hip hop music (Common,REDMAN,Biz Mark etc.) but almost to the end of it, it geats lame and boring. If you are a true hip hop fan, then you must buy...if you are a fan of that bling bling, shake ya butt, i got lots of money etc. stuff, It's not for you...be gone you

5 out of 5 stars Hip Hop.......... the Tokyo way.......2000-05-27

If you're not even at least familiar with this kat, then you're not a true underground hip-hop fan. I first heard Honda on a underground college radio mix show. (WRAS 88.5 ATL,GA) He introduces his self and turn table skills to the world on the second track "DJ Battle". Many well known artist calibrated with Honda on this joint. Redman with the ill ryhme style on "Kill That Noize", Grand Puba, Sadat-X ripped the track "Straight Talk from NY" and one of my favorite underground MC's, "Problemz" spit a lyrical storm on the track "Datz My Word". The CD also features The Alkaholiks form Cali, Al Tariq who put down mad science on the track "The End", Sean Black, Biz Markie, and many more. This is a true underground international classic along with his second release "Honda II". 96 was a year hip-hop was going down hill and a few MC's were holding it up from the underground and DJ Honda was doing his part to hold it up with a host of real MC's.

This is another hip-hop joint to cop for all real hip hop heads

5 out of 5 stars I got some PROBLEMZ...........2006-09-18

I need more DJ HONDA. This is by far the best production from a DJ to give these incredible MC's I've heard in a long time. All of the artists hold it down, especially Problemz & De la Soul. Its cool to hear De La again I remember why I was so into them. I guess what I want to say is this album will re-kindle some of your favorites including some help from Sinista & Roc Raida make this a must own for hip hop lovers.

5 out of 5 stars his best album.......2006-02-01

to me this is his best album he stepped his game up on the production, its more dark now, nothing against the 1st one but this album has better production than the 1st one that's what really makes this album special, this is that real hip hop that you can blast in your car,he's underrated and shouldn't be,i hope he gets the attention he deserves, and what makes this album really special is that its an east coast hip hop compilation.recommeded for fans of real hip hop and underground hip hop, standout tracks are Trouble In The Water with de la soul,5 Seconds with black attack (he's nice), Team Players with krs-one and doe i think its jon doe not sure, Blaze It Up with black attack (my favorite track on the album),Go Crazy with S-On my 2nd favorite, and finally my 3rd favorite Around The Clock with problemz (that beat is hot,it has like a japanese mythical feel to it),recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Great album.......2005-08-13

Awesome album, great to just relax too- has a ton of great appreances on it, it really would be impossible for this album to be anything less than 4 stars.... Black Attack, Mos Def, De La... its really dope and if you dont own it your missing out-

5 out of 5 stars HAI !!!.......2003-01-03

DJ Honda blesses this album with intense beats. Also, I was not dissapointed with any of the guest appearances. It was a good line up: especially with artists like The Beatnuts (Who the Trifest?) or De La Soul (Trouble In The Water) the albums gonna be good. Well worth checking out.

5 out of 5 stars My man Honda, not the car but the DJ !!.......2002-01-31

INCREDIBLE !!! This album is amazingly good !!! It's pure hip hop ! With the best lyricists and DJ Honda's stunning producing skills, this album is A MUST FOR ALL REAL HIP HOP FANS !! The best songs,(both not included in the imported version) are Hai! featuring Sermon, Murray & Redman ; and Travelling Man feat. Mos Def. Finally a DJ worth mentioning !!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Instrumental Blues Album.......2006-10-19

Ronnie Earl, formerly of Room Full of Blues, is one of the great blues guitarist out there today. And this is one of Ronnie's better albums (they are all good). The album is a set of all instruments and has a great feel to it. The mood of the album is greatly enhanced with some excellent B3 organ playing. There are combination of slow and fast blues and I especially enjoy the rocking openning cut. Colour of Love is also excellent album by Ronnie with some guest stars and has some vocal tracks. For any blues fan you will not be disappointed with this album.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Instrumental Blues.......2002-03-18

I came across this CD in the racks at a blues festival in St. Louis a few years back, and the opening line of the descriptive text on the back of the CD caught my interest -- "Ronnie Earl is one of the finest blues guitarists of his generation -- but even this accolade doesn't do him justice." Though liner notes & descriptions of these sorts can be hyperbolic, this one turns out to be quite accurate. I bought the CD sound-unheard (I hadn't even heard of Ronnie Earl) and have never regretted it.

The opening track, "Eddie's Gospel Groove", is a fast-paced, uptempo blues number, and Mr. Earl quickly and firmly establishes his considerable musical virtuosity. While the rest of the songs on the CD aren't quite so uptempo, all of them feature great guitar work and Hammond B3 organ accompaniment (Bruce Katz is handles the ivories for the Broadcasters, which also consist of Rod Carey on bass and Per Hanson on drums).

Almost all the songs feature electric guitar, though the last number, "Bill's Blues", is an acoustic performance. On "Through Floods and Storms" there are saxophones as well (Paul Ahlstrand and Kevin Watson) and on "Blue Guitar", Mr. Earl gets some additional guitar work from Adrienne Hayes and Eddie O'Brien. All musicians handle their chores in fine fashion, but the focus of this all-instrumental CD (despite a brief two-line vocal intro on "I Am with You") is Mr. Earl's unsurpassed abilities.

While primarily a blues CD, on many songs there is an additional layering of jazz and even gospel, which elevates the CD above the ranks of just another great blues CD (not that there would've been anything wrong with that). The mix of jazz is actually appropriate, given the historically close relationship the blues and jazz have had in America.

A CD like this reassures the faithful fans of the blues that while the music idiom may not be the commercial powerhouse that top-40 pop and hip-hop are, the music is in the hands of some fine musicians and songwriters (Mr. Earl wrote or co-wrote all but one of the songs on this) and has a viable future indeed.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent blues album.......2001-08-03

Language of the Soul is a well recorded blues instrumental album that comes across so clearly, and so soulfully, that you can't help but love it. The first cut, "Eddie's Gospel Groove," cooks unbelievably. Most of the album is quite a bit slower but there is a good variety of tempos. Even the housemate that whines for Rammstein, Disturbed and KMFDM is sitting up and taking notice! This album is worth the price just for the first cut, but don't stop there -- there's a wealth of blues history and some great grooves on this CD. Ronnie Earl is one of the brightest lights keeping the blues flame alive.

5 out of 5 stars A Real Meat And Potatoes Player.......2000-03-07

Attention all guitar players-This is the real deal. This is not like all the new blues-pop-rock junk people are putting out these days. Simply the most amazing CD of instrumentals one can buy.

    5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece.......2006-04-17

I listen to this recording again and again. I know just enough French and Spanish to catch occasional words and phrases but I think the music and intensity would appeal even without this.

    5 out of 5 stars Don't speak a word of French....?.......2002-10-19

Don't speak a word of French? Don't worry, nor do I and I have all of Mc Solaar's CDs. I heard a track on NPR (of all things). They talked about how French hip-hop (or rap as they said) was making in-roads into the US. OK, maybe a bold statement, but Mc Solaar combines laid back beats, sexy French vocals with, well, just damn coolness. If you are reading this then buy it - you're already interested and you won't be disapointed.

    4 out of 5 stars Prose Combat.......2002-08-07

This album unveils the inner essence of French culture.
Lovely dazzling like Paris lights. But please, don't mix your astrological signs yet. The music flows as tasty a dated wine that makes you want to sip and sip without pause.
So for those who like exotic fine stuffs, this is an initiation journey.
The esoteric master of metaphor will introduce you to an inner circle of brainstorming, forming, and performing, where rare beats and well-delivered dictions coexist with the simplicity of uncut jazz and the fervor of rap.

Also be prepared to keep focus through the back alleys and twists of improvisation that Solaar aKa Mbarali has inherited from African story-telling sublimation.

Welcome to the World of refinement!

5 out of 5 stars Keeps getting better.......2001-10-31

I first listened to MC Solaar when I was in France in 1992. The album "Qui s'eme le vent" was getting airtime. I purchased that album and enjoyed it quite immensely. It was a number of year before I purchased "Prose Combat" and then "Paradisiaque". After whcih I listened to his self-titled 1998 import album which is on par with "Paradisiaque". Solaar is like fine wine - he gets better with age.

Now we have "Cinquieme AS". Solaar just keeps getting better. His mixes are diverse, at times political, and more modern on some tracks. Fortunately, the same silky smoothness permeates the album. Even if you can't understand French this guy is a must if you enjoy higher-conscious rap. You'll feel his message even if you can't fully understand it.

5 out of 5 stars My all-time favorite Patti Austin CD........2007-03-03

"Body Language" is my favorite Patti Austin CD. Virtually all ten tracks are superb but the gorgeous "I Want You Tonight", "S.O.S.", "We've Got Tonight" and the Isaac Hayes-penned title track remain among Patti's best songs. Although this album was not a commercial success it has stood the test of time and remains just as enjoyable today as in 1980. Many thanks to Sony Music Entertainment (Germany) for reissuing this great album on CD and for remastering it so well.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous, luscious, jazz clarinet.......1999-01-28

I saw Harry live in concert with his quartet, and was stunned. It was one of the best concerts I've ever seen in my life. This album makes me want to learn how to play clarinet. I especially like the title track, which is the last on the disk. I have both his albums, and wish he'd record more. The only sad note in the whole process is that Ed Saindon, the vibraphonist on both Harry's albums and at the concert I saw, has left to start his own band. They're both so much better with the other around that I wish they'd get back together. That's life, I guess. Buy this album.
