I Love My Freedom, I Love My Texas

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Ever since Mingo Saldivar's "Andan Diciendo" became a juke-box favorite throughout South Texas in 1957, the singer-accordionist has been one of the major figures in Tejano music. After 14 albums on such regional labels as Hacienda, Joey, and Espada, I Love My Freedom, I Love My Texas is his first album aimed at the Anglo market. Carl Finch, leader of the interracial Texan band Brave Combo, picked out 13 titles from all phases of Saldivar's career and then produced rerecordings of them, with an all-star band featuring Oscar Tellez, at the modern studios of Joey Records in West San Antonio. It was Saldivar who pioneered the fusion of Tejano conjunto and country music, and this collection includes his bilingual adaptations of the country hits "Marie" and "Ring of Fire," with Saldivar's fluttering button accordion grabbing hold of the bouncy two-step beat that unites the two genres. Even on his arrangements of traditional Mexican tunes, Saldivar injects the plaintive, honky-tonk feel of North American country music--in clear contrast to the bluesier feel of conjunto stars like Estaban Jordan and Flaco Jimenez. There's a lilting lyricism to Saldivar's playing that makes this album a welcome addition to any collection of Tex-Mex music. And anyone who loves Louisiana's Cajun and zydeco accordion will love its Texan counterpart. --Geoffrey Himes

2 out of 5 stars not to great.......2007-04-04

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

3 out of 5 stars Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

1 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for........2004-07-04

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

1 out of 5 stars Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars BEST EVER?.......2005-11-12

As a conjunto radio programmer for many years, I can honestly say "I LOVE MY FREEDOM I LOVE MY TEXAS" is quite possibly the best progressive conjunto album ever recorded.
Saldivar is at the top of his game here, and Oscar Tellez' ringing bajo perfectly compliments Mingo's innovative accordion runs.
The polkas "Las Copetonas", and "Sacate Los Piojos Chencha" are both much better here than the original versions.
The record's highlight though, may be the beautiful bolero "Imposible". It showcases Mingo's creativity and is accented by plaintive and emotive squeezebox riffs that seem to come from his very gut. A masterpiece, in my opinion.
This CD is a must for hard-core conjunto collectors.

5 out of 5 stars genuine Texas hero.......2000-02-29

Mingo Saldivar is one of those legendary accordion players from South Texas who made a big name for himself. He fused country and conjunto for a new spirit that stands alone. This is one of his finest CDs ever. According to writer Ramiro Burr in his definitive "Billboard Guide to Tejano and regional Mexican Music," Saldivar "became known for his energetic stage show, where he would hang his accordion at waist level, while swinging, dancing and singing." Indeed, he is still a dynamo on stage, outperforming many young artists half his age.

5 out of 5 stars Some of the best conjunto.......1999-10-25

Mingo's live performances remind me of a west San Antonio butcher channeling Flaco Jimenez, Waylon Jennings, and James Brown simultaneously.

5 out of 5 stars super dance c.d........1999-02-02

I saw Mingo in San Antonio at the Tejano/Conjunto Festival, which if you are a fan of this music you have to go to this five day event. Its in May and now I go every year. Mingo is the bomb.
