Chico César

Editorial Reviews

César's songs are redolent of the melting pot that is northeastern Brazil. He favors the region's loping forro and frevo rhythms, but tosses in liberal doses of samba-laced and straight reggae and a bit of rock, all processed through an easygoing Tin Pan Alley catchiness. His nasal tenor vocals are surrounded by choirs of backup singers, perky accordions, and rip-roaring percussion, plus aggressive brass charts on the uptempo numbers, and airy strings, woodwinds, and acoustic guitars on the ballads. Born a generation later than Milton Nascimento, Caetano Veloso, and Gilberto Gil, César shares their passion for melody and the slurred, luscious intricacies of the Portuguese language. Although his work is consistently charming, it's also seldom more than that. That being said, this well-crafted album of tropical pop is perfect for al fresco brunches, dance parties, and other festive occasions. Copious liner notes and complete lyric translations are provided. --Christina Roden

5 out of 5 stars Brazilian soda pop.......2006-06-16

Should a CD be judged by its cover, especially this one,in which Chico Cesar outdoes Elton John?

This is a fun album. It's Brazilian bubblegum pop. It's different from American pop music, and not something you'd hear on "American Idol." (Can anyone imagine Taylor Hicks belting out "Mama Africa" or "Beleza Mano"???)Chico Cesar has an infectious sense of FUN.That's what makes this album worth buying. And none of the tracks are filler. It's PERFECT.

1 out of 5 stars Simply fantastic.......2002-06-04

It is just an amazing album. It has a mix of rock, pop, forro, reggae, Jewish song, Morroco song. Actually, this is what makes Northeastern Brazil culture, influences in music, architecture, way of life. So, I can conclude that Chico César's songs are a synthesis of Northeastern Brazil. It is a representation of what we have as the best in music and arts, a real brazilian art. This is it.

4 out of 5 stars Diminutive Ceasar - King of Brazilian Music.......2001-12-01

Over the past five years, Chico Cesar has revitalized Brazil's pop scene. A brilliant poet with a remarkable musical gift to create infectious melodies, Cesar is a unique talent, with a quirky nasal voice, he takes touches of reggae, Bahian and Northeastern Brazilian rhythms to create some of Brazil's most memorable hits in years. Putumayo's new offering features the best of two of Cesar's local Brazilian releases, "Beleza Mano" and "Cuzcuz Cla", and their compiler in chief, Jacob Edgar did a masterful job of picking the best of one of the word's greatest musical poets taking the best of both his infectious dance tracks and his touching ballads.

Cesar grew up in one of Brazil's poorest regions, in the Northeastern state of Paraiba. Musically, it is one of Brazil's most fertile. Occasionally, the rhythms of the Northeast end up in Cesar's songs directly, such as the forro-inspired "Paraiba meu amor" (Paraiba, my love). The accordion and triangle as well as the up-tempo forro beat are straight from Cesar's birthplace. However, for "Paraiba meu amor", Cesar slows the typically frenetic forro beat, transforming the song into an uplifting nostalgic lovesong about the land he (and so many Brazilians) adore.

Another Northeastern folk form that shaped Cesar were the songs of the repentistas (troubadours). It is part of a tradition of oral history where the repentistas compete through improvised poetic duels. The album's opening track, "Papo Cabeca" is an interesting variation on this theme, essentially a "solo duel". The title of the song literally means "heady jive", though in Brazil the term also refers to the cool and smooth way movie stars and celebrities speak. A mix between a Brazilian rapper and a true repentista, Cesar mixes humor and politics in this funky reggae driven song dancing between dozens of ideas representing just about anything "head" related: Trotsky's crushed brains, Baptists's served on a tray, a nail head (hammer), the head of a group (tyrant), penis head (fellatio condom), stilted (socialite) etc.

The album includes many of Cesar's classics such as "Mama Africa", a song that has now become almost a national Brazilian anthem, telling the story of the struggles of a Brazilian working mother. The song is trademark Chico Cesar, mixing folklore, social commentary, and poetic lyrics with infectious MPB.

This collection also includes Cesar's moving lovesong, "A Primera Vista" (At First Sight). The melody is as touching as its heartfelt lyrics. Even a listener who doesn't speak a word of Portuguese would immediately understand that this is one of the most intimate declarations of love ever composed.

With Cesar's first North American release, it seems only a matter of time until audiences here wake up and learn what Brazilians have known for years and discover that Chico Cesar is one of the world's great songwriters.

2 out of 5 stars Good song-writer, poor setting.......2000-10-12

Putumayo (lable) has recently taken on the admirable task of showcasing a number of good world musicians for a US audience (instead of putting out multi-artist compilations); Chico Cesar from NE Brazil on this album is one. I heard him first on a live concert album with just his voice and guitar, a more intimate setting that suits him. Attempting to beef up his songs instrumentally on his first US release, the arranger is guilty of overkill. The orchestration is overpowering and schmaltzy. I did like "Mama Africa" and "Papo Cabeca", but most of the others are embarrassing. A happy medium would be somewhere between these two albums: Chico, his guitar, and one or two backup instruments (especially percussion). This album isn't it. Wait for another.

3 out of 5 stars Predictable Stuff.......2000-06-29

This is a good album, but given the stuff that Djavan, Carlihos Brown, Rita Ribeiro, Monica Salmalso, and Sylvia Torres have come up with recently, it just seems very tame. Cesar does it well, but this approach has been done a thousand times. A good, solid, middle-of-the-road effort, but nothing more.

Antonio Carlos Jobim is remembered as one Brazil's greatest composers. He spearheaded the creation of bossa nova nearly a half century ago; he was also a musician whose talents extended far beyond that of a composer. His training was in classical music and he'd been involved with large-scale orchestral collaborations for his work over the years. This posthumous effort, recorded live in 2002, highlights many of those large-scale works, offering lush arrangements by the maestro himself, Claus Ogerman, and Nelson Riddle, as well as new charts by son Paulo Jobim and Mario Adnet. In addition to classical arrangements of such classics as "A Felicidade" and "Garota de Ipanema" ("The Girl from Impanema"), previously unreleased pieces "Preludio" and "Lenda" make their debut on this double-disc collection. This large canvas of sound deftly illustrates the beauty of Jobim's melodies, but the composer's majestic sense of harmony is really highlighted, thus offering up the biggest revelation of the project. This is the best re-imagination of the composer's work since Morelenbaum/Sakamoto's Casa. --Tad Hendrickson

5 out of 5 stars In Concert With The Sun, Moon, Stars And A Heavenly Choir, Everytime Someone Enjoys Symphonic Jobim, An Angel Gets His Wings!.......2007-06-21

Jobim loves people, and gets excited about all kinds of things, I'm sure there's certain pieces by Debussy and Ravel that made Jobim red in the face because they are so beautiful.

How does an Artist manage to be influenced and still a make a work of art their own?

Love and desire.

Symphonic Jobim strikes me as being very Nationalistic, a sort of spiritual road map to the heart of the World, and what better way to celebrate one's roots by drawing on the panorama of Rio and Brazil, or, Brasil.

Frank Loyd Wright once said, Architecture is frozen Music.

Jobim went on record, Music is frozen Architecture!

Thanks, Tom!

Historians say the height of Civilisation is the drawing in and taking out of water, music is like water, it comes in waves, when I listen to Symphonic Jobim all the public works are in place and working smoothly.

I was raised on Debussy and Ravel, but they're a little before my time, Symphonic Jobim puts life's panorama in perspective for me.

I don't have to be near a pretty picture window to drink in the scenery when I listen to Symphonic Jobim, the beautiful motifs conjure all kinds of pictures and feelings.

Every recording becomes a by product of the time period it was made, but Symphonic Jobim has a certain timelessness attached to it... it is a perfect piece of music beginning to end!

Symphonic Jobim, a Project by Paulo Jobim and Mario Adnet, does much credit to it's Composer. Good Job!

4 out of 5 stars Awesome fitting tribute to Brazil's melody maestro.......2005-11-07

This fabulous concert comprises Brazilian melodies, both traditional and those composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim, with the ample talents of Paulo Jobim, Mario Adnet, and many top Brazilian arrangers and musicians. I was lucky enough to witness a live rehearsal of this concert last spring in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Very impressive! Lush melodies, orchestral arrangements of depth and complexity, the vocal majesty of Milton Nascimento and many others; all of the above add up to a very satisfying musical experience to anyone who loves the rich tasty delight that is Brazilian music.

With his outlandish neo-Indian costumes and music that borrows from reggae, hip-hop, and Senegalese mbalax, Chico César serves notice that he's doing Brazilian popular music his way. He marries an elastic voice that croons and purrs one moment, yelps and yodels the next, to a dexterity on guitar that puts him in the league of tiptop instrumentalists. Originally released on a small independent label in Brazil, the live, mostly solo recording Aos Vivos launched César's career, putting him in demand as both a performer and the composer of hit songs like "A Primeira Vista," which Daniela Mercury transformed into the theme song for a smash TV soap opera, and the reggae-styled "Mama Africa." His unique take on the accordion-driven forro melodies of northeastern Brazil evoke Congolese and Angolan pop on "Tambores" and "Duvida Cruel" when he sets them against his bouncy, circular guitar lines. This welcome reissue easily trumps César's concurrently released studio recording on the Putumayo label, Chico César, proving that the charisma of a singer-with-guitar concert can brandish more firepower than an amplified ensemble. --Bob Tarte

5 out of 5 stars Brazilian acoustic alchemy.......2007-04-06

Imagine a musician having a live acoustic album hit the Top Ten in the Billboard charts, being announced as #1 on America's Top Forty by Ryan Seacrest. That's how Chico Cesar catapulted to fame in Brazil. His intimate live acoustic concert album brought him out of obscurity into Brazil's popular consciousness.

Chico Cesar's "Aos Vivos" offers the live acoustic versions of "Mama Africa" and "A Primeira Vista." It's not a wild rock concert, instead,it's Brazilian folk music, played on a few acoustic guitars (Chico collaborates with the popular guitarist Lenine on a few songs) "Tambores" is as percussive as the tambourines Chico sings about. "A Prosa Impurpura do Caico" sounds Hawaiian,as if it were played on ukeleles. "Saharienne" evokes Spanish flamenco. The audience sings along with "Mulher eu sei." "Templo" is quiet and reverential.

This is perfect for adding to a Brazilian collection, and a great introduction to Brazilian folk music!

5 out of 5 stars Just like the live concert.......2004-04-07

I've seen Chico Cesar live in a smallish venue here in Europe and the set he did was IDENTICAL to this album. Same songs, same order.

This is quite a beautiful uplifting record, Chico Cesar runs through a whole gamut of styles, Reggae, African, Modern Pop aided only by his nylon string guitar. They're all originals and all rather catchy, even if you don't speak portuguese.

It really is a bit of a revelation that one can do so much with such a simple instrument!

My only complaint is that perhaps the record is a TAD too long (maybe one song too long) but otherwise it's a near perfect concert album.

Chico Cesar is a master at crafting sublime songs that merge Afrobeat, Brasilian northeastern folk melodies, and pop. Check out on this album Danca do Ipapangu/Imbalanca, Mama Mundi, or Barco. Also check out the fantastic Mama Africa or Putamayo's worthwile compilation of Cesar's Brazilian releases. If you get a chance to see Chico live, DON'T MISS IT!

Chico César is one of the most prolific songwriters in Brasil at the moment, and his albums have been of very consistent quality. From the title track--with its sweet violin and vocal lines--to the Djavan-esque "Tambor" to the trippy "A Força Que Nunca Seca" (my personal favorite), this is another solid effort which combines reggae, pop, blues, funk, samba, forro and just about everything else seamlessly. Another great César/Mazzola production. Check it out...

4 out of 5 stars One of the brightest new stars of Brazilian music.......2000-06-15

This CD is a must-have for serious Brazilian music lovers. In my humble opinion, Chico César-- along with others such as Carlinhos Brown and Lenine--is the future of Brazilian music, taking up where Caetano and Gil left off. Chico skillfully blends traditional music styles from Northeastern Brazil with reggae, African and funk, to name a few. He is a much-sought-after songwriter, with some of Brazil's top divas literally fighting over his songs. From the African-tinged "Benazir" and "Man'dela" to the moving ballads "A Primeira Vista" and "Anjo da Vanguarda", this CD is a musical map, and would be a great addition to any collection. (The only reason I gave this CD 4 stars is because his next CD, "Beleza Mano", is even better!)

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars brilliant live album.......2000-08-30

I was lucky enough to see Chico Cesar in a small club setting a couple of years ago. He sang and accompanied himself on acoustic guitar and a second guitarist joined him for the last few songs. This album is a faithful reproduction of his live show, down to the track order.

This is a terrific album, straddling an interesting middle ground between African music and Reggae, with a few exquisitely melodic, romantic pop songs in between. Pretty much what you'd expect from one of Brazil's premier songwriters.

There are very lively rhythms, passionate delivery and a certain charming innocence in the songs, all of which contribute to making this album an intimate, very sincere little jewel of a record. One risks running out of superlatives in describing it.

4 out of 5 stars In the Beginning..........2000-08-30

This is the first Chico César album, and a great introduction to an amazing songwriter. This was recorded live in São Paulo, just Chico and his guitar, with special guests Lenine and Lanny Gordin sitting in on a few numbers. As always, all the songs are top-notch, although on this album I prefer the ballads: "À Primeira Vista", "A Prosa Impúrpura do Caicó", "Templo" (my favorite) and "Mulher Eu Sei". Some of these songs were re-recorded with a full band for his sophomore effort , "Cuscuz Clã", and most of them are better with a band, just for the fact that it has a rhythm section for more groove. Also notable is the inclusion of "Alma Não Tem Cor" by André Abujamra--the mastermind behind Karnak (the song is on Karnak's CD as well). This marks the great beginning of a great songwriter/singer/guitarist's career.

5 out of 5 stars classic Brazilian Beauty.......1999-07-22

In his live album, "Aos Vivos," Brazilian singer-songwriter Chico Cesar beautifully manifests every single aspect of the beauty of Brazilian folk and jazz. His voice is rich with color and emotion, and his songs are all clever and wonderfully writen.

      3 out of 5 stars A great record live.......1999-04-16

Very lively, this is the less that one can say about this title. The beautiful voice of Chico Cesar still pushes our souls to pleasure and satisfaction. A very nice first song : "Mama Africa"
