Those familiar with Annbjørg Lien's previous records, as well as her work with Bukkene Bruse, are in for a surprise.
Baba Yaga is a quantum leap of imagination, still with a heart in the tradition, but with everything else firmly in the future. The melodies are impressionistic and far less obvious, and the arrangements give more than a nod to what's been happening in electronic music (as well as to the past--there's a hint of ELP at one point). The music takes in influences from Mozambique to Samiland and mixes them up in the potent cauldron of Lien's imagination. Her playing is better than ever, from subtle runs to pure fire, the technique stunning. But it's the musical mind behind
Baba Yaga that impresses more than anything; Lien has rocketed into the first division of Nordic music with this disc.

Liadov's Masterpiece.......2002-02-17
This is a very timely reissue of one of my favorite Marco Polo discs--and a very affordable one at that (the original cost me 18.99!). An indespensible program for lovers of Russian Romanticism, Liadov's miniatures easily take their place among Rimsky-Korsakov, Borodin, and Balakirev, conjuring up a world of fairy tales, spectacle, nostalgia, and folk song. This disc represents the breadth of Liadov's abilities, from the celebratory Polonaises, the orchestral wizardy of "Baba Yaga" and "Kikimora," the folksong-inspired Ballade and Mazurka, and the otherwordly "Enchanted Lake" and "From the Apocalypse." Though unable to write a truly "big" work, Liadov left us with innumerable orchestral gems that, taken as a whole, easily add up to a Golden Cockerel, or Prince Igor. However, it does make you wonder what would have happened had Liadov actually completed his projected "Firebird" ballet...
An exciting and highly rewarding disc, even if the sound isn't quite top notch (but the performances are quite good so it all balances out).

Good Compilation of Russian Orchestral Showpieces.......2006-01-10
This is an enjoyable compilation 19th and 20th century Russian and Soviet/Armenian (Khatchaturian) orchestral showpieces, with an interesting and informative essay in the CD insert. Two interesting selections, "Baba-Yaga" and "Kikimora", by Anatol Liadov (1855 - 1914), a pupil of Rimsky-Korsakov, are based on witches from Russian folklore and are not that well-known outside of Russia. All of the selections are performed well by Valery Gergiev and the Kirov Orchestra.
I did have the impression is listening to this CD that some of the more powerful passages were played somewhat too forcefully. Perhaps this impression was due more to the sound engineering than the conductor and orchestra. For example, on Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture, when the percussion imitates the boom of the cannon, it sounds almost a sonic boom coming across the speakers. With that reservation, I recommend this as a well-performed and entertaining selection of orchestral showpieces.

Not so typical Russian program..........2007-03-26
This disc is actually a showcase for Mikhail Plentev and the post Soviet era Russian National Orchestra he founded in 1990. We are treated to selections not usually highlighted on Russian festival compilations, making this CD all the more attractive. All three composers here were related scholastically with Rimsky-Korsakov the teacher. The "Le Coq d'or" suite, arr. Glazunov was cut from the same cloth musically as "Scheherazade", out playing the opera of the same name. Liadov's three biggest miniature hits are included. "Baba Yaga" the witch, grotesquely flies off. Another folklore "Kikimora" rocks, rattles, thumps whistles, and spins in music. The "Enchanted Lake" by contrast is sensuously evocative, reminicent of Debussy and Wagner's "Tristan".
Tcherepin least known, was a conductor and pianist in his time. His two contributions here owe much to his teacher Rimsky-Korsakov. "The Distant Princess" a love affair in music from afar in the Orient. The "Enchanted Kingdom" is based on the same subject as Stravinsky's "Firebird". The kingdom of Kashchei sleeps gently under a magic spell, as natures sounds fail to awaken it. Pletnev and his players have great affinity for this music and are given superb engineering.
One of Pletnev's better efforts.......2007-03-09
Many of Pletnev's more recent orchestral recordings have been savaged (some justly so) and Pletnev has been scored as a pianist who thinks he can also be a conductor, but is hopelessly out of his depth. Say what one will about his cycle of the Tchaikowski symphonies, but with this recording it is hard to imagine anyone criticizing Pletnev for not knowing his way around the podium. This is a good, crisp colorful effort on all fronts.
I would disagree with the other reviewers, as I feel that the "Le Coq d'Or" suite is very much worth the inclusion. The opera is easily the most subversive of all of Rimsky's works, and Pletnev's version positively bristles with a savage, sardonic wit --- as it should. The first version of this suite I ever heard was a lifeless, inert effort by Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra, and it left me wondering why anyone would bother recording it at all. Now one can understand why it is worth the effort.
I am not as keen on Liadov as are some others (although his music is well-performed here), but I agree that the Tcherepnin works deserve more attention than they have generally received. Once again, Pletnev more than does them justice. All in all, a solid and satisfying undertaking.
Russian Fantasies Filtered Through French Impressionism.......2006-04-26
At a time when the works of Shostakovich, Stravinsky, Prokofiev et al are clearly established as part of the standard repertoire composers it is refreshing to come across this CD of some of the lesser known Russian composers. The most well known composer on this recording is of course Nikolay Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov and his famous 'Le Coq d'Or' suite is probably the reason the CD was made.
But though Mikhail Pletnev conducts the Russian National Orchestra in a zinging rendition of the work, the true reason for paying attention to this recording is the work of Nikolai Tcherepnin, a Russian who immigrated to France and was greatly influenced by the 'French sound' such as the Debussy school. He is a colorful orchestrator and Pletnev gives ample reason for erasing his neglect in these performances of 'Le Royaume enchante' (The Enchanted Kingdom) and 'Prelude pour la princesse lointaine'. The music is atmospheric and languid, sharing the tonal palette with the Impressionists. Pletnev draws a beautifully scaled performance from his orchestra.
The other neglected Russian composer Pletnev features is Anatol Konstantinovich Lyadov and indeed his 'The Enchanted Lake' is performed with all of the ethereal beauty the piece contains. And as though to demonstrate the full range of Lyadov's writing the recording also features 'Baba-Yaga' and 'Kikimora', works for large orchestra that describe fantastical tales with plush colors and dynamics. This is one of those recordings to bring out when a taste of the different is needed to tantalize the ear - or works to place before friends as a musical quiz! Grady Harp, April 06
Gentle, mystic music.......2000-05-27
This selection of music was the perfect choice for an 'Enchanted Kingdom' theme. If you have ever heard the Fire Bird by Igor Stravinsky (and if you are looking into classical pieces such as this, you probaly have), this music is very similar in mood. The actual Enchanted Kingdom piece was very mysterious and enchanting, for lack of a better word. It almost resembles the opening to the Firebird. The Distant Princess, also by Tcherepnin, resembles the love scene in Firebird just slightly longer and more involved. Baba-Yaga is another wonderful 'action-packed' piece much like the the music right before Infernal Dance in Firebird. Overall, I enjoyed this CD and found it to be average among my collection. The cover is nice too. A drawing of a castle in a mid 1400s style is displayed.
Polished magic.......2000-01-17
A mixture of the familiar and the unfamiliar. The suite from Rimsky's 'Golden Cockerel' comes off least well here, the first movement suffers from perfunctory phrasing and the passage depicting the Astrologer, with its clockwork mechanical textures (track 6: approx.2'25) is taken way too fast and is made to sound inconsequential. The later movements are much better, though this reading does not compare with classic accounts from Efrem Kurtz (on budget price EMI) or Ernest Ansermet. The three Liadov pieces are given vivid performances, beautifully textured and balanced. But this disc is worth exploring on account of the pieces by Nicolai Tcherepnin, particularly 'The Enchanted Kingdom' -a dreamy and gorgeous piece of tone-painting that reeks of Stravinsky's roughly contemporary 'The Firebird'.
Ideally the Rimsky should have been dropped, and more Liadov (when will we get a world class recording of his 'From the Book of Revelation'?) and Tcherepnin included, but this is an enjoyable release that will be appreciated by lovers of technicolour orchestration and musical impressionism.

Best all-Liadov CD.......2002-04-06
There are currently three other all-Liadov CDs available (Marco Polo, Olympia, and ASV), but none can boast crystal -clear Chandos sound. None of them are played by the BBC Philharmonic either. The playing is polished, the woodwind and brass always make great contributions. Sinaisky is not particularly imaginative, but this music is conductor-proof and is presented beautifully. Liadov obviously learned much from his teacher Rimsky-Korsakov, and there are echoes of Stravinsky, even Scriabin, in such pieces as "Kikimora" and "From the Apocalypse." None of the pieces last more than 9 minutes, all are charming. If you like the fairy-tale world of Rimsky-Korsakov and other Russian romantics, you'll love this CD.

Tutti.......2000-05-06
Although a compilation of various pieces, this CD has the drama and sonic impact which will test the limits of your system. The orchestral presentations are first class. The sound stage presentations with the left to right width and the front to back depth give the listener an outstanding three dimensional impression of the actual orchestra instrument placement in the recording hall as well as the hall's ambient sound.
I have from time to time heard the expression 'sound windows' when discussing Speakers in an audio system. This CD will give you an excellent opportunity to check the clarity and precision of your system....in particular the bottom end capabilities of both the ampifier and the speakers.
I stronly recommend using this CD as a true Reference CD Rrecording when evaluating enhancements or upgrades to your system. Bring this CD to your dealer and listen carefully.
Get to know what your system is capable of and what it is not capable of delivering before and after listening tests for your new component.
Good Luck
WONDERFUL SAMPLER CD!.......2000-02-26
It does the trick. It literally samples the entire recent Reference Recordings catalogue, with varied excerpts from all kinds of music, a rare and exciting compilation wel worth the price. I reccommend it highly.
Tutti - Orchestral Sampler.......2000-02-02
This sampler is not your typical classical sampler. As seen from the track listing, it contains a diverse, but incongrous, selection of orchestral pieces, mixing Mozart, Vivaldi and Rimsky-Korsakov with more contemporary composers such as Bruckner, Arnold, and Paray. Although the list of selections is tempting and attractive to those who want to expand their musical knowledge, the combination just doesn't work. The jump from Mozart to Paray to Arnold to Vivaldi is unsettling to the ear, although it may be suited to a music education class. If, however, you seek less traditional (less soothing), less harmonic (more tempestuous), orchestral music, this may be the collection for you. The conducting and performances are very good. It certainly will never be background music for dinner!

Customer Reviews:
Neo-traditional Nordic fiddling with a beat and an edge.......2006-10-02
An intriguing, atmospheric fusion of pop and world music with traditional Norwegian fiddling. The artful compositions, by fiddler Annbjorg Lien, keyboardist Bjorn Ole Rasch, and guitarist Roger Tallroth, are all unique. Elements from Celtic, Sami and Mozambique musical traditions crop up here and there, as do bits of Latin chant and Middle Eastern percussion, in tracks ranging from darkly brooding soundscapes to lively dances. This is cool, intelligently crafted music that will neither bore nor disappoint! Other contributing musicians include drummer Rune Arnesen, wind player Hans Fredrik Jacobsen and a bona fide string quartet. For more Nordic fusion music, try the work of other Northside artists, such as Garmarna, Gjallarhorn, Hednigarna and Sorten Muld. For interesting, equally creative fusion music from a different culture, compare the music of Axiom of Choice.
Lien breaks out.......2002-11-10
Annbjoerg expands her repertoire into electronic, Sami and African in this her most creative album to-date. Other reviews here describe this music adequately. In the interest of experimentation she even does a few vocals. She composed a larger share of this music than of most of her other works which suggests that this virtuoso has many adventures in store. Remember, she is only about 33 years old.
...talent abound for this Norwegian sensation.......2002-06-07
I can't say enough about Annbjord's musical abilities in playing the Hardanger fiddle. After being with Bukkene Bruse and several recordings of her own, Baba Yaga would be her breakthrough. It was Norwegian traditional folk, celtic, jazz, electronic and avant garde all thrown into one big bowl with interesting results. A Mussorgsky concept based off of "Pictures At An Exhibition" movement, Baba Yaga a Russian witch taking on a Emerson, Lake and Palmer approach...tradition versus modern. If your dead set in something sounding as close to Annbjorg's previous works, you may be disappointed with Baba Yaga...I on the other hand was quite fascinated by it, Lien is opening herself up to new worlds. Listening to Aja for me was like listening to a Norwegian hoedown, throwing in a little chanting at the end for good measure...thats one song that you can literally feel her Hardanger fiddle, I'm in awe of her and her c.d.
Emerson, Lien & Palmer?.......2002-02-08
Not so much New Age as Progressive Rock. This album reminded me of ELP, Yes, Gentle Giant and the like without really sounding like any of them (Well maybe a little like ELP on 'Wackidoo'). Ms. Lien blends traditional and modern extrordinarily well. The Sami yoik in the latter half of 'Ája' took a couple of listenings to fully appreciate (my wife still says 'What the hell IS that?' 'Kauto From Kautokeino,' I answer.) but I think it really works well, blending the Norwegian & Sami musical roots. I anxiously await Ms. Lien's next release - if it's half as good as 'Baba Yaga', it's a winner.
still exploring.......2000-12-04
Annbjorg Lien is still young, and seems to want to explore new niches with each new cd. This one in some respects extends her work on the excellent "Prisme," extending into material deriving from outside cultures, and in some pieces to a new age-like setting. You can still appreciate her virtuosity, but the pace is broken by excursions into some rather strange atmospheres. I admit to not much caring for the vocal "enhancements," for example (in fact, one might even complain that they are downright irritating). If I were new to Lien's discography, I would go with her first two solo efforts (and work with Bukkene Bruse) over this one.

Customer Reviews:
The original Russian sound - glorious Svetlanov recordings!.......2007-07-20
This CD set was part of a series released by BMG in the mid 90s after their licensing agreement with Russian record label MELODIYA. All CDs in the series have now been deleted (shame on BMG!). This particular title was one of the first in the series.
It is amazing that one reviewer claimed that both orchestra & conductor are 'obscure'!! Hello??? The USSR (State) Symphony Orchestra, now the Russian State Symphony Orchestra is one of the finest orchestras in Russia and the late maestro Svetlanov one of the leading and most prolific conductors of the ex-USSR. He recorded an endless list of works by a wide range of composers for various labels all over the globe.
This CD focuses on known Russian works (Night on the Bare Mountain, In the Steppes of Central Asia, Russian Easter Festival Overture etc) and some very rare Russian gems (on CD2). The recordings are typical of the golden era of MELODIYA and the Russian sound of the orchestra is unmistakable. There might be better engineered recordings of these works, but Svetlanov's magic cannot be easily surpassed. Of all the 'Steppes' I have heard, this wins hands down!
Grab a copy of this set if you come across it - an excellent 'sampler' of the art of Yevgeny Svetlanov!
A Collection Like No Other.......2007-07-10
This is a boon: a scoop of Russian gems, well-known and not-so-well-known, in some of Evgeny's Svetlanov's greatest performances (recorded between 1963 and 1990), in superbly remastered sound. If you are familiar with Svetlanov's Hyperion Balakirev set, you already know that, at his best, he was the equal of Mvravinsky, Reiner, Beecham and a few select others.
All but a few tracks of this two-disc set are of definitive quality...The NIGHT ON BALD MOUNTAIN is HAIR-RAISING, and the DAWN ON THE MOSCOW RIVER makes the great 1936 Boston / Koussevitsky look TAME by comparison.
The BRIGHT HOLIDAY (aka RUSSIAN EASTER OVERTURE) is as exciting as but completely different from the classic '68 Stokowski / Chicago.
The various Liadov tracks are among the great recordings of any Russian music. (KIKIMORA is a sort of Russian "Sorcerer's Apprentice" but even more pungent, and THE ENCHANTED LAKE really is just that.)
The Balakirev ISLAMEY (orchestrated by his protegee Lypunov) is scintillating and energizing; you can almost SMELL the mountain air of the Caucus region. (A note to the paranoid: this work does not promote or portray "radical Islam" ; the "Islamey" is a Kabardinian folk dance...Think of whirling dervishes.) True, at 1:47-1:49 there is a moment when the woodwinds go off the rails. Still, no other version has the spine-tingling ELAN of this one. And since Svetlanov apparently made no commerical recording of ISLAMEY, this precious live performance (from Christmas Eve, 1986) rounds out his recorded Balakirev.
Perhaps the most affecting track is the last to be recorded, Glazunov's VESNA [SPRING], which cuts as emotionally deep as anything by Tchaikovsky or Rachmaninov- but, paradoxically, with a lighter touch.
Admittedly, as one prior reviewer pointed out, the PRINCE IGOR scene is not among the more powerful tracks, here; Nemi Jarvi's rival effort on DG outshines this one in terms of splendor, ensemble and chosen tempos.
Why this set received so little promotion (and even "littler" critical notice) is beyond me. But don't let this set get beyond YOU if you run across a copy. Because, more and more, when these things go they GO.
Russian sound for russian music........2002-12-03
Soviet orchestras were the only orchestras ever to properly do justice to many russian pieces in my opinion. After hearing many of the pieces on this disc, I can't help but find American or West European versions of the same works a bit bland in comparison. Extremely emotional and moving renditions.
Authentic Russian Interpretations.......2002-09-20
Don't be misled by the claim in another review that this conductor and orchestra are obscure. Svetlanov was a leading Russian conductor (he died recently), and the USSR Symphony (now the Russian State Orchestra) was one of Russia's leading orchestras. These performances are part of a series of re-releases of material originally recorded by Melodiya during the Soviet era. Do not consider buying this compilation for the more familiar music; consider it for the rarities and for the the authentic Russian-sounding performances in good remastered analog stereo. If you are unsure about the music on these particular discs, investigate Svetlanov's other BMG releases, such as his Tchaikovsky symphonies (including one of the best Manfred Symphonies ever recorded).
This is an obscure but worthwhile CD.......2002-06-06
I have a penchant for shopping in local used music stores, and this is one of the CDs I found. This CD does not cater to the Tchaikovsky, bombastic Russian fan which I am, but instead explores lesser-known works with excellent merit in their own right. Though I bought the CD for Bright Holiday (that is, the Russian Easter Overture), I kept it for the pieces by Liadov, Glazunov and other virtual unknowns.
The Russian Easter Overture was sub-par by my standards, but for an obscure orchestra (USSR Symphony? Who are they?) and an obscure conductor (Svetlanov? Who's he?), I was quite impressed by the maturity and expressiveness of the lesser-known pieces on the second disc. About Olden Times by Liadov became my instant favorite, and the nostalgic and passionate harp and strings at the start endeared me to it instantly.
Do not buy this CD for the "known" pieces. The Polovtsian Dances are also sub-par. However, this CD is worth a listen, and perhaps a purchase, for the touching mystique and fiery obscurity of the lesser-knowns.

Album Description
This is a reissue of a recording that was scantily distributed first time around. The works selected for this recording were originally conceived for a different instrumentation. Pictures at an Exhibition by Mussorgsky and Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 were both written for solo piano, while Bizet's Carmen Suites were taken from the opera. As this recording will demonstrate, the brass quintet is more than capable of doing justice to such challenging works. Widely acclaimed as one of the world's finest brass ensembles, the Atlantic Brass Quintet has been heard in 48 of the United States and more than a dozen countries across four continents, performing a unique repertory spanning the Renaissance to the present.
