Henri Dikongué made his worldwide mark with 1998's C'est la Vie, an album of gentle sophistication and sweet pop grooves. He comes from Cameroon but his music is an amalgam of West African folk, reggae, and Parisian pop; a worldly mix that is light and airy, reminiscent of Cesaria Evora or the easygoing side of Tropicalia in Brazil. A gorgeous, high-toned voice with a strong vibrato and an acoustic guitar dominate the whole sound, with flutes, saxophone, and percussion acting more as a cushion than as a strong component of the music. This album, originally released in Europe in 1995, has a slightly better edge than the more recent C'est la Vie, with some stronger vocal deliveries and a bit more groove to it, but either recording would be highly recommend for listeners looking for a little respite from "the big beat" of makossa, soukous, and other more popular styles from Africa. --Louis Gibson

With his signature screechy tones and sing-chat style, Eek-a-Mouse influenced many of the younger dancehall vocalists who've emerged in his wake. This album catches Eek in his early '80s prime when the digital reggae sound was first exploding. The title track was a massive hit. Fans of conscious roots-style reggae may want to think twice before investing in this album, but lovers of classic raggamuffin will find this to be a fine addition to their collections. --Shane Hunt

5 out of 5 stars Mouse In My House!.......2006-02-28

This is a great CD for serious Reggae Lovers. Eek-a-Mouse has a unique delivery that flows smoothly with a deep bass thumping in the background, which compliments his "thought provoking" lyrics. Each song seems to take you on a journey into his personal life, leaving a sense of appreciation for the culture that has given birth to such a great artist. There's a Mouse In My House, and he's jammin' mon.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Mouse Album.......2005-11-23

Wa Do Dem is my personal favorite, but you should see if you can find the Greensleeves Records version. It contains the tracks Georgie Porgie and War Don't Pay, two really great tracks I had never heard before. Those two tracks are not on the Shanachie version. None the less Wa Do Dem (means what's the matter with them)is da best Mouse album of them all, Ganja Smuggling,Long Time Ago and the Title track are timeless classics from the Mouse.

5 out of 5 stars definitly not your normal regge singer!!!.......2004-12-02

Wa Do Dem, Ganja Smugiling and Noahs Ark. These are just a few of ek a mouse's hits. This is definitly not your Bob Marley type of regge singer altough different it's still 1 of the best. Whats so great about this regge singer is the way he sings his regge he takes you to a different dimension it's like your living his songs. Ek A Mouse has many fans still to this day his songs are veary popular and to believe will be for many years. This classic is to be 1 of the best hes ever done even better then his greatist hits. Yes this regge singer has definitly proved himself to be a great. I mean what would regge be with out Ek A Mouse. This is what regge is all about. The way his music sounds is unlike any other, it's the way he sings like bum bum bitty bum bum stuff like that, that has you falling deeper and deeper in to this world. It's no wonder why people always want to get high to him, he just relaxes you and takes you with him into his world so sit back and injoy the music cause your gonna go through a wild adventure.

5 out of 5 stars EEK-A-MOUSE.......2003-11-10

This reggae singer's Jamaican roots and rap/chat style fascinates and mystifies your mind, making you nod your head and get lost in his inventive language and lyrics. Eek-A-Mouse's "Wa Do Dem" was released in July 1991 under the label Shanachie. Shanachie was a record label that rose from the slums of Jamaica and showcased the heart of the revolutionary music that is Jamaica. This is one of the few reggae artists who bases his songs and lyrics on a drum kit. He is truly amazing.
"Eek" was born as Ripton Hylton in the Trench Town ghetto of Kingston, Jamaica. His singing career began in elementary school and by the age of 15, he had established himself as one of the most talented singers in Kingston. As a fan of horseracing, Ripton would always bet money on a horse named "Eek-A-Mouse." The horse would always lose sometimes not even finish. When Ripton stopped betting money on the horse, it began to win! His friends would tease him about this and the nickname Eek-A-Mouse was born.
A six-foot six-inch tall performer, Eek-A-Mouse has released thirteen albums since 1982. His best is "Wa Do Dem," which contains the hit single "Wa Do Dem," my personal favorite. It shows Eek-A-Mouse's creativity and the beat just takes you away from the stresses of life and into a realm you can only imagine.
The CD cover is blue with a little yellow mouse running across the cover. It would never catch your eye at a music store, but it will definitely get caught in your CD player if you buy it.
Other favorites are "Ganja Smuggling," which tells the story about how homelessness can lead to the selling and smuggling of marijuana. My other favorite is "Operation Eradication." All of Eek-A-Mouse's lyrics originate from Eek's life experiences in the Jamaican ghetto and growing up in a broken home. Not only are his lyrics inventive, but Eek uses his voice as an instrument through use of his nasal passages and unusual vocals.
Eek-A-Mouse is the founder and creator of the reggae form called "sing-jay." Sing-jay is a mixture of singing and dee-jaying, or "toasting" as Jamaicans refer to it. It is spiked with different and creative vocal sound effects. Alona Wartofsky from the The Washington Post says, "Unlike most reggae artists, it's not what he says... With a voice that's the stuff of children's nightmares, and often seems to have a life of its own, he squeaks, squawks, bing-bing-bings and dem-di-dems ad infinitum."
Reggae music is amazing! It tells a story and a message. If you see yourself as a person who likes to chill out and let music take over your mind, you will definitely like "Wa Do Dem." Over the summer, some co-workers of mine introduced me to Eek-A-Mouse. Since then, it has opened me more to reggae music. If you're not a big fan of reggae but like Bob Marley, definitely buy this CD. Not only will it open you to Jamaican culture, it will also open your mind as you relate to Eek-A-Mouse's songs and lyrics.

5 out of 5 stars THE BOMB!! THIS IS WHAT RAGGAE IS ALL ABOUT.......2002-06-07

THIS WAS THE FIRST RAGGAE TAPE I LISTEN TO WHEN I WAS A TEENAGER. IT WAS INTRODUCED TO ME BY A LATE FRIEND AND AS SOON AS I HEARD THE FIRST SONG I WAS HOOKED ON THE MOUSE. I WAS FORTUNATE TO MEET THE MOUSE IN SAN DIEGO SEVERAL TIMES AND I NEVER GET TIRED OF HEARING THIS ALBUM. IF YOU LIKE RAGGAE...THIS IS THE FLOW YOU NEED IN YOUR COLLECTION.

5 out of 5 stars Doing it with the R.......2007-01-12

Talk about grown and sexy! I am a huge NE fan and have been since Candy Girl. I enjoyed Ralph's other solo projects but this one is really hot. It shows how he has evolved. Been listening to this everyday since I purchased it. My favorite tracks are "Love Hangover", "Angel" and "Never Noticed". A must for any real NE fan.

3 out of 5 stars Needed some NE help...........2007-01-11

Once you turn on this cd, you can tell after the 3rd song that RT wrote all of them. I am a huge New Edition fan but he clearly needed New Edition's help on this project. On what planet were you on when you wrote most of these songs?

5 out of 5 stars Rizz at his best.......2006-07-21

Rizzwafaire is very good piece of art and whoever produced this album knew what they were doing. But clearly ralph made a great comeback from the (it's goin down) effort and the song (never noticed) just set the tone for this project i just wish ralph had made an album a few years earlier but better late than never.
As i listen to this album i always notice that ralph on all his albums has never had anyone from new edition sing on any of his songs besides that this a very consistent album i can listen to this album from start to finish. Now my favorite cuts are (save a little love),(my homegirl),(something to give you) and (another shot) and i hope to hear more from rizz in the future and new edition.

The only negative about this album is that although it's very consistent there is just a lack of standout songs and that department should've been handled by my boys jam and lewis.
Now i know this was on an independent label (xzault) but just think if jam and lewis had added about three cuts this would be a perfect album because the rest of the songs on here are tight and this album should've been on the charts more and on the radio.

The reason i say this is beacause i live in dallas and down here i would've never known that this album was even out if it wasn't for the internet but anyway Ralph your still the man and on your next venture please have these producer's on your next work including new edition these are: jam and lewis, r.kelly (if he's not locked up) and xzault media team. That's all you guys need to get back on top. love and peace

5 out of 5 stars Ralph's Bitter Sweet Debut.......2006-06-06

Ralph's third cd is making very sublte waves and this is one of his best debuts. Let's put it on the table: Many record execs pass over on his flexible tenor. They pass over on his ideal sense of being because they want something harder than usual.
Luther was as silky as ever and they recognized his talent. What the hell is their problem with Ralph? Maybe these mofos need to pull out this gorgeous cd and REALLY listen to him. He's as smooth as a snake but sings as pretty as a lark. I know talent when I hear it. Ralph went to the neo soul sound and it works for him. My Homegirl is my ultimate fave. After the recording, I read that he's a little bitter due to the fact that the music industry will chew you up and spit you out- whether you are a novice or a professional. But maybe through this recording, he's got the last laugh.

Grade: A+++++++++++

4 out of 5 stars RT the main man.......2006-06-04

i have been following the musical career of rt for sometime and i have to say this particular album is worth the wait. i especially enjoy songs like home girl, angel, better man and too cool. ralph tresvant has been an artist that understands the meaning of the word practice makes perfect and from all indications he is perfecting his singing skills.
i m more than satisfied with rizz wa faire and i want rt to keep on with the good work.

4 out of 5 stars Good for what it is, but a cheesy and VERY guilty pleasure - ONLY for punk-pop fans.......2006-01-03

Punk-pop is a genre that I have a hard time giving credibility to. It's an extremely trendy genre and hasn't produced too many good albums. However, it exists and a lot of people seem to like it. The saving grace for this album is how good all the songs are (albeit in an extremely cheesy and guilty pleasure kind of way). None of them are great, but they're all good. This is ONLY for punk-pop fans, though; it has absolutely no other appeal. If you can understand that then we're good. Ok, so how are the songs? Well, they're EXTREMELY poppy and very catchy. They may not be very interesting, but they're all indeed catchy. The singer, though, can get pretty annoying, and this hurts its rating. If you're a punk-pop fan you'll most likely dig this album (I don't especially like it, but I can see why fans of the genre would). Recommended ONLY for punk-pop fans.

3 out of 5 stars nice.......2005-09-11

im not sure what this band is doin. (they call themselves eager seas now....whatever). but the bands lone cd under the moniker Watashi WA showed a fresh guitar driven approach which can get sadly undermined by the lame drumming and annoying by the numbers heart on sleave lyrics. GGGarth manned the boards......which is kind of weird when you finally hear what the band sounds like. but for the most part its a 12 track package of emo/pop tunefulness. Postivety sounds like the key hear but the lyrics could of been more poetic but isntead they sound like run on sentences that never get to any point. The drumming tempo is odd and irrtating, defusing the pace to too fast where it should be notched down......but i guess all songs like this shouldnt be nesscarily ballads. but depsite uneveness its still a fresh approach in a genre that justr aint fresh anymore

5 out of 5 stars I concur with the rest........2004-12-07

My fellow reviewers have basically summed up the good atributes of this album, which is one my sister bought me for my birthday. There's nothing very "catchy" or over-the-top unique about this album, which is why I think it is good. It's classic, timeless, something you could listen to ten years from not and not flush with embarassment. It's also relaxing; makes good ambient noise when I'm in my room.
The cover art is amazing; I wish I could have it printed onto a bag or a skirt or something...ha.

5 out of 5 stars Watashi Wa rocks!!!!!!.......2004-11-08

I like Christian music and look for songs that edify, but let's face it--lots of Christian music is stogy and sounds like it was written by the committee of the middle of the road. Watashi Wa breaks free of all that with a energetic collection of great songs. In fact, it is unusual for a CD not to contain filler songs to complete the set. This CD doesn't have any filler. Every song is both unique and very good. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Pop Punk Gone Right.......2004-06-21

You want a fast paced pop punk Blink182 kinda sound with emo/Christian lyrics? If yes, then this is the cd for you. Except this is like fifty times better than Blink 182 etc. Buy this shizzle.

    Album Description

Music was originally a communal act. It was utilitarian and, in a way, magic - it made work easy. Music was also a reflection of the nascent social order, with one lead voice and the rest responding. The first solo music was therefore a powerful act of liberation, of spirit. This recording contains a great diversity of solos; more than a millennium separates the oldest from the most recent; there are solos for flutes, reeds, brass, lutes, zithers, fiddles, piano, percussion, and voice; the music comes from the Near East, the Far East, Australia, Europe, and the Americas. But despite the contrast of instruments and styles, what gradually becomes apparent is the similarity beneath the surface of these works. Soul Alone: The Art of the Solo suggests that there is some fundamental distinction about the way musicians express themselves in a solo setting - something that defines the Art of the Solo.

This is some of the most personally felt music the world's greatest traditions have to offer. If the act of making music is a personal one, so too is listening. Music was always meant to be listened to - by other people, or by something else, whether you call it God or nature or by another name. And that is the reason for Soul Alone: The Art of the Solo. Because after all, music can be performed alone, and heard alone, but it is still a communal art, meant to be shared. Perhaps it only truly becomes music when it is shared.

Stately and subdued, Mozart Variations joins The Impressionists and Bach Variations as interpretive projects involving Windham Hill artists and a gathering of guest performers. The disc's overall mood is largely reverential, though its periodic departures from tradition are surprisingly successful. Mike Marshall's mandolin-driven "Allegro from the Serenade #13 'Eine Kleine Nachtmusic'" is a dignified charmer, and William Coulter's Celtic embellishments give "Theme from Symphony #40" a lively, unexpected spin. John Lee Sanders engineers perhaps the album's biggest left turn by applying a restrained soprano saxophone to "Et In Carnatus Est (from Mass in C Minor)." Arrangements that most effectively intertwine classical and contemporary influences: a lovely rendering of "Menuett #6" by pianist Liz Story and Paul McCandless's adaptation of "Motet 'Ave Verum Corpus'" for wind instruments and acoustic guitar. --Terry Wood

We picked this up after sampling several of the cuts here at Amazon. We were interested in a way to introduce our 1+/- year old to classical music and add to our drive and naptime repertoire. We couldn't be happier with this CD. The variations reflect the enormous talent and creativity of those arranging and performing on the CD and underscore how timeless music can be! If you like Classical, Jazz, NewAge or Eclectic, this will fit well in your collection!

5 out of 5 stars Breathtakingly Beautiful, but not for the musical snob..........2000-05-13

Mark my words. This is one of the most beautiful recordings I have ever heard. This is NOT new age, so don't let the label fool you. These are thoughtful variations of some of the most recognized Mozart pieces performed by some of the best contemporary musicians on earth. Most are virtually unrecognizable except for the famously faithful themes running throughout. Lots of historic Windham Hill stable musicians are represented here, along with some hugely talented "guest" artists. The Turtle Island String Quartet, Liz Story, Mike Marshall, Paul McCandless and Michael Manring bring their usual excitement to everything they play, but my favorite piece has to be "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" by the L.A. Guitar Quartet. If their interpretation of this early Mozart doodle fails to draw an eye mist or a lung gasp, then you must be dead! This is too good to languish at the bottom of the Amazon pit. Buy this and live a little.

In the way of vocals, RETCH are masters as they present a stunningly gutteral vocal effort, yet it is achieved without the use of vocal effects. The album is commenced with several comical samples within the first few songs. Definitely a sick approach without the boring death metal sound that many US bands have taken on since the late 90's. With track titles such as "Vomitous Anal Douche Ingestion" and "Crimson Vaginal Flatulence", it's clear this is the death/grind brutality I had been looking for. The album rips through songs with insanely blasting drum programming and the screeching inhales of Ryan Allen. The breakdowns are a must in every song, creating even more gutteral presence, such as in the fifth track "Ben" before the one minute marker. There is certainly a great grinding aspect to the band's music. The tracks grind their way to the eighth track, where RETCH perform the CLEAN FLESH cover of "Coprophagy". I see no flaws here, aside from the somewhat cleaner production. The drum machine may be that barrier, as the music could be rougher with a skinsman. Which they have now; problem solved.

5 out of 5 stars An Anime OST Must-have!.......2004-09-09

The "Guu" series has become loved by people all over the world in the last couple of years. The music is probably one of the reasons people have come to love it so much. Catchy titles such as Love Tropicana cannot be forgotten and believe me, that one will get stuck in your head!

Of course, if you found this CD, I'm sure you know what this anime is and are trying to figure out if this is the soundtrack you want. There are a few of them on here and none have track listings. So, I will give you all a track listing of it that I have in both Japanese and English (of course, since I can't read Japanese, I can only asume these titles are right. I found them from various places on the web and through CDDB).

          01. Love Tropicana [Opening Theme]
          02. Mitsurin {Janguru} (Jungle)

5 out of 5 stars Annette Hanshaw: Leave Wanting More!.......2005-10-30

I was so glad to get this CD of her final recordings. Annette shows a new maturity on some of these songs such as "Say It Isn't So" which lingers in one's mind after hearing her rendition of this classic song. "Let's Fall In Love" is another stand out along with "Fit As A Fiddle". "I Cover the Waterfront"
and "Don't Blame Me" are superb renditions of two songs that have been recorded by so many artists. Annette Hanshaw is an integral female singer in the roster of 20s and 30s singers. Her music is her legacy and it is one to be proud of though it was far too short of a recording career, it was so beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Her last sides..........2004-12-22

Annetet Hansaw was the greatest early female jazz singer, and she really swing hard! This cd cocuments her last recordings and finds the singer sounding very pensive, and romantic. She sings almost with a Conne Boswell New Orleans accent at times, and her backup bands are exellent jazz-wise. Annette quit at the top of her game, before the age of 30! This cd is essential for all fans of classic jazz, or for those who thought the only listenably female singer from the period was Ethel Waters.

4 out of 5 stars Great sound, but.......2004-02-26

I agree the sound is very good on this record, though for
some reason "Don't Blame Me" on my disc leaves off the
last 50 seconds. And there is very little documentation.
But these provisions aside, this is an excellent disc of the
more pop side of AH, and some of the songs are gems
too, like the wry "20 Million People" and especially "I'm Sure of Everything but You."

5 out of 5 stars Great music, good technology, mediocre documentation.......2003-06-07

This is a super CD, thanks to Hanshaw and modern technology. I compared songs which are duplicated on the "Lovable & Sweet" CD from Living Era, and in all cases this one has better audio quality. Strangly, the technicians are not credited here, but the graphics person is, and this album has primitive graphics: computer jaggies, illegible writing on the disc, and very sparse documentation of the selections. You really would want both CDs, but if you want the best cover-art, get "Lovable & Sweet"; best sound, get this one. I am grading on audio. Documentation would get one star.
