This album reminds me of nothing so much as the type of bland music you could hear by a middle-aged no-name band at your local Holiday Inn. If you want the "soul" of Judaism, go to Temple.

The Best Jewish Band Out There.......2000-12-08

While I don't have this CD, I know all of the music on it. I have been a fan of Safam since before I can remember. Looking at the selection of music on this CD, the only fault I can find with it is that it's not long enough. Safam has so much more great music that they can't begin to fit it all on one CD. If you don't already know Safam, I would absolutely suggest that you buy this CD. .... All 10 of their albums are available there.

Good Jewish Music by One of the Best Jewish Bands.......2000-06-17

This CD holds a collection of the songs that Safam plays while on tour. This music reveals the beauty of old Jewish tradition with the flavor of American Life giving music and understanding to an ancient culture. While the songs are mainly oriented to Jewish people, the music includes Hebrew (note: the name Safam means mustache) which anyone can listen to and appreciate. Many of the songs are also in English and just about anyone can feel the music once they listen. I recommend this to anyone who is a Jewish American, is studying Jewish culture, or is intrested in traditional "Jewish American" soft rock.

American Jewish folk-rock blues.......2003-10-01

If I were to classify this album, I would call it "American Jewish folk-rock blues." If that sounds eclectic, well, so is the CD. "Rebbe Soul-O" is a daring creative experiment. Subtitled "a one man musical journey" (solo, soul-O, get it?), the CD is a "musical play" that should be listened to in a quiet mood, from beginning to end. (Amazon lists this as a "soundtrack," so I assume it was/is performed on stage somewhere. The CD was produced in California.)

As the title suggests, vocalist Bruce Berger does indeed sing solo, but there are plenty of good musicians backing him up, so it's not exactly a one-man show. Their sound is an interesting mix of traditional Jewish tunes and original material, with instruments ranging from synthesizers to acoustic guitars and drums, to wind chimes, crickets, and ocean waves. I especially like "Song of Angels," which is really a poem recited to background music, and the contemplative rendition of Rebbe Nachman's "Narrow Bridge." My least favorite piece is "Turn me on, Sister Sarah," which is a bit too sexually suggestive for my Orthodox tastes (although he does marry Sarah in the end). However, if this song represents the beginning of a journey from secular to sacred, then it fits as the opening number for the play. This is not just "one man's journey," it's the quest of many American Jews to find a "sound" that bridges the Old World and the New -- not just in music, but in life itself.

Wow, it's even better than I remembered.......2006-04-08

I saw Rebbe promoting his album at a bookstore years and years ago, quite by accident, and purchased a copy of Rebbe Soul. I loved it and played it up and down for weeks on end. Then I loaned the CD out and it never came back. Recently I came across this album again here on Amazon and immediately ordered it - and I'm back to playing it back to back 24/7 again. It's hot, it's cool, it's funk, it's jazz, it's soul, it's some Yiddish, all thrown together into a tremendously energetic and rhythmic album by an amazingly talented musician. What took me so long to repurchase it??????

Wonderful, Moving, Melodic, Cool.......1999-11-19

Burger is like a Yiddish version of Carlos Santana. His guitar licks are hot, yet the melodies are Jewish. He works with traditional Jewish Prayers and puts them to a Jazz-Rock-Percussion style that is truly unique! I would recomend this CD to anyone, but especially to those who are searching to be proud of their Jewish Heritage.
