Voice of an Angel.......2003-08-30

This is a lovely album by Renato Braz whose style in today's Brasil is quite refreshing. He has a way of stripping songs down to their bare bones and quietly and beautifully reconstructing them into the simple, fine, original compositions they were meant to be. His voice is startling in it's clarity and straightforwardness; it reminds me of a younger Milton Nascimento, but with a style that is stricly his own. Dori Caymmi, the great composer, arranger and singer, was taken enough with this young artist to include him on his own, 2003 Grammy nominated album, Contempôraneos along with powerhouse artists like Caetano Veloso, Chico Buarque and Edu Lobo. I think Caymmi was right on the mark with this remarkable young man. For an introspective look into Brasilian music, I highly recommend this album.

this may not be the kind of music you expect from brazil... renato braz sings songs of many great songwriters, including chico cesar, dori caymmi and paulo cesar pinheiro. it's a very 'simple' album - most of the time, you hear renato's voice and one or two more instruments - and this makes it a very 'true' album, without the technology of samplers, amplifiers and other magic 'tricks'... i can't decide for you, but if you like interesting brazilian music - this means if you accept that brazilian music is more than carnavalmusic - i really encourage you to discover renato braz !

Brazil Balladeer Braz: Blah.......2006-12-28

Hearing Renato Braz on solstice with Paul Winter, I wondered how this soft, sweet voice, similiar to Milton Nascimento's, would sound with a proper Brazilian band, hence I purchased this CD. Here, the music is not the hard-driving samba nor the sophisticated bossa--no dancing or joy; rather, it is quiet and gentle, perfect for late night relaxation. Indeed, it is a conducer of sleep. It is too low-key for my taste (the reason for the 3 stars), but I do admire his voice. If Braz had mixed the recording with some up-tempo songs to break the consistent subdued tone and prove his versatility, the recording would be a keeper.
