About the Artist
featuring; GAO HONG, SHUBENDRA RAO, TY BURHOE, JAMES NEWTON, YOSHIO KURAHASHI

Product Description
Gao Hong creates new traditions for an imaginary nation: a jazzed-up country that is part Chinese, Japanese, Indian, and southern California. As you might imagine, it's a nation where everyone gets along quite nicely and the food rocks.

The leader of this new country would be Gao Hong; she plays the pipa, (pronounced PEE pah) a four-stringed pear-shaped lute, that can play a huge variety of sounds. She is a master performer of this instrument, a native of China, and a familiar face on the international concert scene. She has brought along some amazing friends to help build this sound: India's legendary sitarist Shubhendra Rao, percussionist/tabla magician Ty Burhoe, flute virtuoso James Newton, and Japanese master shakuhachi player Yoshio Kurahashi. If you don't know these names, well, they are a dream-team.

The music within the disc is some of the most innovative world music of the last 10 years..

5 out of 5 stars I discovered Sibelius with this CD.......2001-03-18

I'm a big fan of Mattila and of art song. But Sibelius was mostly unfamiliar to me (except for some of his symphonies) until this disc. I especially liked the final cut, Jubal. The accompaniment here is minimalist with Mahlerian touches. Mattila sings exquisitely throughout. If you like songs by Brahms, Mahler, or Strauss, expand your knowledge horizon with this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Voice - Beautiful Music.......2000-11-17

I especially liked the songs "Var det en dröm?" and "Norden", but all of these songs are beautifully sung throughout. Karita Mattila has the perfect voice for these songs. Her voice is soft, yet strong, and the cool color is used well especially in "Norden". It is also clear that she understands every word she is singing.

This record is also a great introduction to Sibelius songs, for those who are not already familiar with them. There are also wonderful recordings of Sibelius songs by Jorma Hynninen, Tom Krause and Anne-Sofie von Otter, that I highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Surprising combinations; great CD.......2003-11-04

This CD allows Chinese musician and composer Gao Hong to present herself in an amazing array of musical settings. It opens with "Morning" for pipa, sitar and tabla, featuring Shubhendra Rao and Ty Burhoe. It seems incredible these instruments, which have probably never been combined before, can sound so natural together. The range of the pipa and sitar complement each other superbly, and the players create a dazzling, energetic interplay. "Moved by the Spirit" is a duet for pipa and flute, with renowned jazz musician James Newton. It begins in a quiet mood, becoming playful and adventurous but never completely moving away from a contemplative feeling. "Flying Dragon" displays Hong's talent in a solo work whose title is taken from her life. The pipa, in the hands of such a master performer, can change its sound from delicate and lute-like, to densely harmonic, to percussive. She communicates a wide range of emotions and ideas; telling us of hopes, fears and events without speaking a word. "Cutting Grain", for shakuhachi and pipa, is filled with haunting, plaintive notes from Yoshio Kurahashi. The piece is based on a traditional folk song and the pipa sometimes references the sound of the shamisen (the pipa's closest counterpart in Japan). All of the musicians unite for "Silk Road". The piece begins slowly, as if each instrument is making the acquaintance of the others. After some searching, a harmonic and rhythmic center is established. The musicians take delight in adding their distinctive voices and bring the recording to a bright and lively conclusion. This recording is an outstanding example of the fruit that can be born from the intermingling of different cultures by talented artists. I highly recommend it.
