Even if you're not well-versed in Portuguese fado music, it's easy to be swayed by its rich, mournful sense of emotion. Mariza, one of the genre's premiere contemporary vocalists, see fado as an international language. She makes a convincing case on Concerto em Lisboa, a live recording captured duirng her acclaimed performance at the Tower of Belem. It's an alternately elegant and electric showcase, highlighted by Mariza's gorgeous, piercing voice. She's backed by a full orchestra, whose timing and tightness only add to the experience. From the opening strains of "Loucura" through the closing "Ó Gente Da Minha Terra," Mariza is alternately somber and festive, creating a perfect synergy of singer and musicians. The disc's shattering standout track, "Menino Do Bairro Negro," is likely as gorgeous as anything you've heard in any language. --Joey GuerraAlbum Description
Mariza's brand new live CD recorded in front of 20,000+ people at the magnificent and picturesque gardens of Torre De Belem in her home town of Lisbon, Portugal. Recorded in 2005, with an orchestra (Sinfonetta de Lisbon) led by Jacques Morelenbaum, the beautiful fado singer transports the listener to a timeless evening in Lisbon. The special bonus DVD is a documentary called Mariza And The Story Of Fado, which examines the art of fado, its history and development through interviews with and performances by Mariza and other fadistas, musicians and experts. Filmed on location in Lisbon, the program contains archival footage of famous past singers, including the late acclaimed Amalia Rodrigues

Lovely Portuguese fados - nice CD + DVD set.......2007-04-07
The added bonus documentary film DVD is a real treat, not only for the glimpses of Mariza and other contemporary fado stars, but for its look back at the roots of the genre and its meaning to Portuguese society. Particularly interesting is its examination of fado's political and social significance -- originally the fado was type of left-wing protest song, but it was subverted in the 1930s by the dictatorship that ruled Portugal until the mid-1970s. The junta made fado music into a propaganda tool, emphasizing romantic love and family values, to the exclusion of older themes about hard work and hard times. After the dictatorship toppled, fado fell into disrepute, but regained popularity in the 1980s and '90s when a new generation cast about for a way to guard Portuguese culture from the encroachments of globalized (American) popular entertainment. A fascinating story, laced with many soulful performances.

Amazon.com's Best of 1999
After having covered the sensual nightclub material of Miss Perfumado and Cesaria Evora, Evora left us wondering where she could possibly go next. She returned with Café Atlantico, blowing us away with her luscious voice and widened repertoire of Brazilian- and Cuban-influenced music. With touches of string accompaniment, Evora's music dances with light energy and woos with the classic morna sound, leaving us to ponder what amazing music she'll master on her next album. --Karen K. HuggAmazon.com
Unlike Mar Azul or earlier releases Miss Perfumado and Cesaria Evora, which were largely collections of the Portuguese-influenced song form called morna, Café Atlantico finds Evora singing Cuban and Brazilian traditionals. Evora's voice is as smooth as ever, but it's a little odd to hear her croon to a bolero or danzon. Still, the connection fits snugly as this release is a tribute to Evora's hometown of Mindelo, a port on the Cape Verdean island of São Vicente where sailors from Portugal, Argentina, Brazil, and the Caribbean cross-pollinated the music of Cape Verde. On Café Atlantico Evora croons with her usual beauty, poise, and melancholia. Thankfully, instrumental accompaniment again includes the piano and acoustic guitar and bass, but with the flavorful addition of light (and only occasional) orchestral accompaniment, which highlights the creamy richness of this lovely Latin music. Café Atlantico takes a tasteful, innovative step in broadening Evora's repertoire, and its plaintive grace and relaxed romanticism emphasizes what the world has now come to realize: Cesaria Evora is the greatest living singer of our time. --Karen KarleskiCustomer Reviews:

If the legendary singer Amália Rodrigues is the queen of fado, the national song genre of Portugal, this debut by Mariza announces her coronation as its crown princess of the 21st century. This twentysomething, Mozambique-born beauty of Portuguese, Spanish, German, African, and Indian descent rapidly rose from the Mouraria district of Lisbon to become fado's newest and brightest star. The 12 selections on this recording are arranged in chamber-style ensembles consisting of bass, piano, classical guitar, and its 12-stringed, Portuguese cousin, the Portuguese viola. Songs like "O Gente Da Minha Terra" and the traditional "Por Ti" ring with a haunting feeling of saudade well beyond Mariza's years. "Maria Lisboa," "Ha Fest Na Mouraria" (with cellist Davide Zaccaria), and "Barco Negro" are peppered with Iberian and African-flavored percussion. Mariza sings these songs of love, God, and country with a youthful vitality that proves that fado is alive and well. --Eugene Holley Jr.Customer Reviews:

Well, it's like a tradition... every two years there is a new Cesaria album and she is on a tour almost every year. And that really is something... "Rogamar" (www.rogamar.com) is her tenth album and if you are a fan of Cesaria you will find some songs very similar to older Cesaria songs... like you heard them somewhere before.
But if you aren't a fan of Cesaria (what are you waiting for?!:), this album is a good way to start likeing her. But maybe not the best. (in my opinion Sao Vicente or Cafe Atlantico are her best albums; but also check out the Anthology).
My favorite songs on the album are:
Africa Nossa - definietly the best song on the album. Very nice melody and great duo with a Senegal singer Ismaël Lô. Probably to become one of her classics. First single from the album.
Sombras Di Distino - beautiful ballad, very similiar to Cesaria's older ballads.
Um Pincelada - very nice song... again ballad but very beautiful song. Nice melody. Second single from the album.
Avenida Marginal - up tempo song. Great rythm.
Rogamar - nice song. Very nice melody.
Rosie - mid tempo song. Well I find this song a little bit different that other Cesaria songs. But I like it!
Mas Um Sonho - nice up tempo song. Feel good (Carnaval) song!
Travessa De Peixeira, Saiona D'Vinte Ano - also good songs.
Well, it seems that Cesaria just can't do wrong... very good album, great songs (Africa Nossa, Sombras Di Distino, Um Pincelada), nice melodies, many emotions and one, great unique voice. Cesaria. One and only.
My album rating (overall): 4.5/5

Standing out amid a very strong crop of young new fado singers, Mozambique-born Mariza returns with Transparente, her third album. While her second, Fado Curvo, announced her as a great new voice on the scene, this one reaffirms that flowering promise while expanding the depth of her range. She gets help from great Brazilian cellist, arranger and producer Jacques Morelenbaum, who adds a lush orchestral backdrop to this folksy torch song form, extending the bittersweet melodies even though it does file away some of the edges. No matter, the singer's phrasing and timing are calibrated for drama, and her voice soars with happiness or quivers with passion. Highlights include a panoramic version of the fado traditional "O Silencio da Guitarra" and a small group rendering of "Recusa." Her moving away from the tradition may trouble purist, but this album endears itself easily if given a listen. -- Tad HendricksonCustomer Reviews:

Amalia Rodrigues is the unchallenged queen of fado--the Portuguese equivalent of flamenco or blues--and one of the greatest singers on record. Her voice is rich and sinuous, with the soulful intensity of a Billie Holiday or Edith Piaf, but a warmth and sense of phrasing all her own. This retrospective ranges from her first recordings in 1952 up to 1970 and gives a superb picture of her work. The instrumentation is simple guitar and Portuguese mandolin, perfectly framing her aching laments and flowing melodies, like a gentler version of flamenco or a continental cousin of Cesaria Evora's morna. The songs include folk and popular material, but the emphasis is on the deep, passionate fado, and it doesn't get any better than this. --Elijah WaldCustomer Reviews:

The second with Carlos Maria Trinidade........2007-06-29
O silencio da guitarra open the cd but the greatest moments are Cavaleiro monge, the words are from a poem of Fernando Pessoa, but the best song here is for me Vielas de Alfama who talk about the famous place in Lisbon where the fado was born.

Classic Fado!.......2004-10-07
Princess Mariza.......2004-07-13
Fado Curvo, produced by Carlos Maria Trindade from Madredeus, is full of intoxicating, catchy tunes with extremely beautiful arrangements, often with notable influence of jazz and African music, when you listen to them you can almost see lonesome roads along the sea at sunset, red-roofed houses of Lisbon, vast sandy beaches and moonlit valleys... My favourite song is, perhaps, Cavaleiro Monge, sombre and melancholic, with lyrics by no less a person than Fernando Pessoa. Vielas de Alfama is dark and velvety like the nights of Lisbon, Retrato is sheer sensuality, Entre o Rio e a Razao is life-asserting and sunny, Deserto, with an incredible muted trumpet and fliscorn, is deeply dramatic... in this last one, Mariza's voice is most expressive. She is not only a marvellous singer but also a good actress, and her only drawback is that - perhaps due to the lack of experience - she often overacts. With a vocal agility like that, she can attain a better command of her voice (and her temperament)and find the best way to convey the mood of each song. She just needs a bit more sense of proportion and, as it has already been said, better choice of material. And with all that, Princess Mariza is sure to become the true new Queen of Fado.
Great Album.......2004-04-11
I bought her first album in 2002 and love it. So, as soon as I saw that Mariza had a new album out I snapped it up. This is an excellent album and she has an absolutly beautiful voice. I am not Portuguese, nor do I speak the language; but her albums (and good music regardless of the language) transends those barriers easily. It makes a great intro album to the Fado genre!

Album Description
It's undeniable that wine and music complement one another. This CD illuminates this fact with songs from wine producing nations around the world. The tasting starts in Europe with the French singer-songwriter Pauline Croze, whose contemporary chanson gives a modern twist to the vintage genre. Vinicio Capossela and Gianmaria Testa prove that Italy's appreciation for the fine arts extends to song weaving as well as winemaking. Spain's Amparanoia sings about a love paradox that could apply to drinking wine as well. Portugal's Jorge Fernando provides the perfect soundtrack for a glass of his country's famous port wine. Though now living in exile in France, Chile's Mariana Montalvo and her music have remained steadfastly rooted to the land where Bordeaux grapes thrived in the 19th Century. Argentina's Melingo offers as much variety in his music as his country does in its vineyards. On the opposite side of the world, the sunny locales of South Africa and Australia offered the British an alternative wine source during World War I and II. South African guitarist David Hewitt became known for his blends of classical and jazz music with African-inspired rhythms and melodies. Fellow guitarist Aaron Hopper collaborates with vocalist Kacey Patrick to form the group Stringmansassy for Australia's contribution to the wine list. California's Alison Brown and Greece's Vicky Moscholiou round out this robust collection of songs.A portion of Putumayo's proceeds from the sale of Music from the Wine Lands will be donated to Slow Food in support of their Terra Madre World Meeting. Terra Madre provides a forum for those who seek to grow, raise, catch, create, distribute and promote food in ways that respect the environment, defend human dignity and protect the health of consumers.

Vintage Putumayo.......2006-09-22
Pauline Croze sings the breezy nouvelle chanson "Tita" (which also happens to be the heroine's name in the classic "Like Water for Chocolate");she gives smooth jazz to French music.Vinicio Capossela sings a melancholy song about the world's end.Amparanoia's "Puerto Claridad" is Spanish-meets-Cuban music.Jorge Fernando praises the Portuguese fado of his homeland.Alison Brown makes jazzy banjo music.Ana Laan's "Para el dolor" is lilting Spanish music. The late, husky voiced Vicky Moscholiou sings an imploring, bittersweet rembetiko in which she compares herself to coffee.Mariana Montalvo blends the chanson of her French home with the traditional Chilean instruments of her heritage.2raumwohnung plays smooth German jazz--not exactly a contradiction in terms. The late David Hewitt's "Streetbeat" is glorious African guitar music. The closing song,"Headless" from Australia's Stringmansassy, combines great acoustic guitar music with an odd song&odder vocalizations.
This album is a perfect companion to a glass of wine;it's also a great European compilation (though it has contributions from Australia, the US,South Africa,Chile&Argentina)and great for those who enjoy acoustic music. It's as relaxing as a good glass of wine.

Like Ireland, Cape Verde is a former island colony which has perennially lost its young people to emigration. And like its Irish counterpart, Verdean music is filled with songs of separation and homesickness. Cesaria Evora, the greatest Verdean singer of her generation, includes several of those songs on Cabo Verde, her sixth album overall but only her second release in the U.S.With a population descended from former Portuguese colonialists and former African slaves, Cape Verde closely resembles Brazil and has produced a music with similar rippling syncopation and light, sensual vocals, though the Verdean sound is marked by the breezy lilt characteristic of islands. But when Evora sings mournfully of a "Partida" (departure) that will take her love far away, anyone who has ever experienced such a separation will recognize the mix of pain and affection in her voice. That voice is a very special instrument, for it glides gracefully over the supple beat even as it resounds deeply in Evora's lower range and fills up with warm, enveloping resonance. She is backed by a small, all-acoustic Verdean combo led by the ukulele-like, four-string cavaquinho. American jazz great James Carter plays tenor saxophone on "Coragem Irmon," but Evora has no problem matching his thick, buttery tone. --Geoffrey Himes

An Afro-Portuguese Sound & A Silk-Smooth Voice........2003-07-05
Cabo Verde was colonized by the Portuguese, and the combination of the African and Portuguese cultures makes for some fabulous music - a little similar to sounds from Brazil. The music on this CD is a combination of the 'fado' from Portugal, mixed with the Brazilian ballad-like 'choro,' and soulful 'forros,' along with Cape Verde's own particular island sound. There is no better way to understand this wonderful, nuanced music than to listen to it. And Ms. Evora, herself, plays her voice and makes a music that is very much her own.
The nostalgic "Partida," "Mar e Morada de Soledad," and "Ess Pais," are sung with a sadness and longing that evoke much emotion. Other cuts, like "Tchintchirote," and "Sangue de Beirona" make me want to just get up and dance to the Oh So Sensual Beat! It is Ms. Evora's soft, silky-smooth, engaging voice that is so special. She is backed by strings - the guitar and an instrument called the 'cavaquinho'- but the rhythms are pure island. A terrific CD! You will enjoy it!

Cesaria Evora asked heartache to come in and set a spell. The morna, the slow, rhythmically balladic blend of African blues and the Portuguese fado, was the perfect medium. Released in 1998 in the United States, this 1992 album about nostalgia, longing, hit-and-run lovers, and the sea features titles like "Barbincour" ("The Conman") and "Torura" ("Torture"). Not the least of Evora's magical appeal is that her smooth, honey-rich vocals suggest a universe of passion and pain with nary a spasm of self-pity to break the spell. --Elena OumanoAmazon.com essential recording
Like Billie Holiday, the Cape Verdean queen of morna--a slow, rhythmically balladic blend of African blues and the Portuguese fado--asked heartache to come in and set a spell. In fact, trouble and Cesaria Evora are longtime soulmates. This 1992 album (released in the U.S. in 1998) about nostalgia, longing, hit-and-run lovers, and the sea features titles like "Barbincour" ("The Conman") and "Torura" ("Torture"). It went gold in France, transforming the plump grandma diva of her West African island's beachside canteens into a world-music icon. the exquisite soul of morna.......2005-03-08
The songs on this CD are lilting, melodic gems, most with a nice slow swing to them, with a few that are more up-tempo, like tracks # 3, 10, and the fabulous "Angola" (# 6), which is my favorite number on the CD.
Four of the tracks (# 2, 7, 9, 11) were written by Cesaria's prolific uncle Francisco (better known as B. Leza), as well as three by one of Francisco's followers, Manuel de Novas (# 3, 4, 12). The musicianship is marvelous throughout this recording, and a lot of the world-wide success of this CD is owed to the masterful arrangements and piano artistry of Paulino Viera, whose solos add much to the beauty of the music, as does the haunting violin playing by Malaquias Costa featured in the final "Tortura".
A good place to start your Cesaria Evora collection, the sound is quite good and total playing time is 59'29.
