This CD comes from the UNESCO Anthology of World Music. The folk music of the Balkans is complex and difficult to follow if you try to categorize it by either ethnicity or geography alone, but this set of recordings makes a valiant effort. Recorded in Albania in 1993, these recordings are contemporary music, not locked-in-ice archival stuff, and they exhibit a cultural strength and wisdom the rest of the world often forgets. In ensemble works for instruments (primarily strings and flutes) and in solo and polyphonic voices, this album explores the music of the Labs, Gegs, and Toths who populate modern Albania in fairly segregated regions that have preserved their unique flavor in spite of modern assimilation. It also includes music from the Roma (Gypsy) people, an important inclusion for a people often seen as outside of the cultures they share. Excellent historical and musical notes make this a complete package. --Louis Gibson
