Album Description

ALO may be describing the inspiration for their release Roses & Clover however, it best summarizes the band's newfound approach to their music. For a band accustomed to performing songs live for years, crafting and shaping hundreds of times over before entering the studio, the age-old process of recording an album first was, well... liberating.

On Roses & Clover, ALO explored new methods of collaborating, finding a richer, more mature sound built on their individual songwriting strengths. Recorded in a turn-of-the-century barn in the hills overlooking colonial Santa Barbara, the four musicians holed themselves up for two weeks with little more than their favorite instruments and 40 songs in various stages - 80% of which had never been performed on stage.

Stands up to repeated listening.......2007-06-22

I have been a fan of these guys for a long time. Mostly their live shows and live recordings. I am not a huge fan of any studio recordings in general for the simple reason that I cannot "feel" it as much as when the band is playing together.
However, this album goes to my top ten albums of all time, for anyone. Every song is a gem, I can listen to this album over and over and do not get sick of it. For me, no matter what the artist, that is a miracle.

I do agree that on the surface, this album is a bit more pop, but that is merely the surface. This album is pure magic. Super recommended.
Faves are Roses and Clover, Monday, and empty vessel.

I have to disagree with others in that this is their best yet. I still think Fly Between Falls is much much better. Don't get me wrong, this is still great music, with incredible vocals from Zach and very good songwriting with very catchable melodies and harmonies. But I don't think it has the depth or transcendence that Fly has. Even though they continue to demonstrate their mastery of classic R&B, ala Marvin Gaye and even Stevie Wonder, woven around more bouncy jam-band influenced rythms, there are many times I have been listening to this and listening to the melodies and thinking..."oh-oh...hope they aren't going to start sounding like Hootie and teh Blowfish."

They haven't gone totally "pop" yet, and hope they never do.

But who knows, I might be back here in a month or 2 after listening a few more dozens times to change my review entirely. I can be like that with music.

ALO simply amazing.......2007-06-11

After seeing ALO support Jack Johnson I went out the next day and bought their first album Fly Between Falls, which I would says was amazing in itself. As soon as I was aware of the new record I had to get it shipped across the atlantic and was not dissapointed. Ever song on the album Roses & Clover is well written, brilliantly performed and a pleasure to listen to. My persoanl favourite tracks are Maria and Monday but I could listen to this album over and over and never get tired of hearing the beautiful songs. I recommend anyone who likes good music to get this.

I bought this album as soon as I knew it was out, just 4 days before I was to see them in concert. I love their previous album, Fly Between Falls, and wasn't sure where they would go from there. To my great surprise this album is even funkier than the last, and yet it contains great mellow songs to balance it out wonderfully. I highly recommend both of their albums, its hard to determine which is the best. But overall, i suggest to go out and see these guys live, they play one hell of a show, and ive been to a lot of shows in my day. Peace and love

I just got fly between falls and it's such a great mellow CD. I would advise anyone and everyone to buy this CD. every time i hear Walls Of Jericho it just makes my day a little better. they are my new grateful dead. buy this cd you won't regret it.

ALO, or Animal Liberation Orchestra, sound like a bunch of hippies. These hippies are totally cool!

This is a surprisingly good CD. It's a re-release now on Jack Johnson's Brushfire label, so you know it's good. Jack even guests on the second track.

The music is very chill and laidback, but a little more uptempo than Jack Johnson. It has a little funky groove to it.

Although it does have some rather stupid lyrics at times, the music more than makes up for it. This is a really cool cd, perfect for hanging out. Recommended.

ALO is different that other 'jambands' they are witty, soulful and positive lyrics...and the guys can sing as they have great voices. ALO has fun and catchy tunes, and they are serious musicians that also have a sense of humor. if you are looking for music that is a breath of fresh air, look no further and buy this album. it flows very well and has a big range of sound for 1 cd. i highly suggest ALO if you are looking for music that has a soul and has great melody. ALO is more talented than most bands, and they are about to make it big...check out this album and see them live...you won't regret it.

I absolutely love this band. I found out about them while looking on Jack Johnson's website, and saw a link to their site. The name is what caught my attention, and I thought I'd check it out. I went to their site and looked at some of the guys in the band and saw that one of them was Zach Gill, the multi-talented piano player who pals around with Johnson and the rest of his Brushfire crew. I searched for him online and found the hit song "Girl, I Wanna Lay You Down" and downloaded it. I loved it, and downloaded some of their other songs and fell in love. They kick ass, and their songs are so catchy and relaxing that you can't help but like them. They sound like Phish in a way, but i like them even better because their songs are catchier and much less drawn out. The c.d. is excellent; there isn't a song on it I don't enjoy listening to, and they have quickly become one of my favorite bands. This band will be huge without a doubt. Frontman Zach Gill's voice is better than Johnson's, he's incredibly talented and really deserves alot of recognition. Since they were signed to Brushfire Records, they're only going to get bigger and more popular, so go buy Fly Between Falls a.s.a.p!

ALO is one of many MANY great bands coming out of the post-phish sceene from cali. Vey chill vides, a bit cheesey at times but its a good "sing along "kind. very relaxed, mellow music. if you are interested in this bad or its music, then PLEASE SEE THEM LIVE, these bands are supported by attending live performances so go see live music. on the same note, if you find yourself enjoying these guys i would definatley suggest you look up the following: TEA LEAF GREEN!!!, siesmic, delta nove, glove, green light council, mofro, the greyhouds, etc... this is GOOD MUSIC. BUY THIS OR FIND SOMETHING AS GOOD. (jah wants you to- he told me.) - that hippy

Great music for a barbeque..........2005-11-15

I saw these guys when they opened for Jack Johnson in the summer and liked them so much, I saw them again when they came back. If you get a chance to see a show, see it, Zach Gill plays a mean accordian. The music is definitely funky with some rock and blues influence. "Girl, I Wanna Lay You Down" featuring Jack is an obvious track worth repeating and "Wasting Time" certainly brought back some (ahem) memories. If you like Jack Johnson, this will be a good pick.

Easy listening, good stuff! I would recommend this if you like String Cheese, Jack Johnson (obviously)....good mix of jam, acoustic flavors, etc.

I would recommend this to all the jam band fans. Saw them at High Sierra Music Festival for the 1st time. Great fun tunage!!

And 'Fly Between Falls' is even better. If you want to check out longer 2 minute track samples, go to CDBaby and enjoy... Oh, and you'll be pleasantly surprised that they still have new copies for sale at the reasonable price of $10 (instead of the $99 Amazon seller price I saw listed here when I posted this review.)

I just came back from the Jack Johnson concert here in Rio and saw ALO live as the opening act. Their music blew me away (and everyone else around me). These guys rock and made the concert worth going to even before Jack Johnson stepped onto the stage. I highly recommend their music. They are incredibly talented.
