Editorial Reviews
Terry Kane grew up in Addison, New York. For three generations her Irish ancestors toiled there to turn thousands of acres of land into successful farms. Her upbringing was full of dance and song. Mary, her mother, always sang while she did her chores around the home and she taught her children to sing. Francis was the father of this large family and he was known to call square dances as a break from his farming. Most of the children in the Kane family played instruments and sang together creating their own harmonies. Terry, the youngest, blossomed in this rich musical environment and was destined for a career in song. She received many vocal awards during her high school years and earned her bachelors and masters degrees in Music Education from Crane School of Music in Potsdam, NY.
During the last twenty years, along with her teaching, Terry has performed and studied Irish music. She has toured Ireland several times, learning more traditional songs and studying sean nós (old style) singing. This style goes back hundreds of years and requires vocal agility, knowledge of Irish and exceptional memory. The songs have a hauntingly beautiful slow melody that is ornate, unaccompanied, and sung with free meter. Terry's light lyrical voice is wonderfully suited to this style.
Terry won the New York Fleadh Cheoil singing competition three times and participated in the Scoil Eigse and Fleadh Cheoil Na hÉireann in Listowel, Co Kerry, Ireland. She has performed across New York State from Buffalo to the Bronx and is a regular at many Irish festivals. Recently, she moved near Philadelphia. She studies the Irish language from Deirdre McFarland in Bethlehem, PA. Terry has adopted her Gaelic name, Treása Ní Chatháin and is one of the most prominent singers of the sean nós style in the Philadelphia - New York area.
