I am a huge fan of branigan's music I started listening to her when I was 11 years old and to this day feel as though shes probably 2nd best to Karren Carpenter and if was'nt for Branigans Power Of Love we would'nt even know who Celine Dion is today so why was'nt there a day of greaf,sorrow, and a celebration of Laruan Branigan on mtv or vh1 telling the world that she passed away it took me more than 2 years later to find out that she even died and for this I will never forgive mtv or vh1 for not announceing it!

I was very upset when a little over a year ago, I found out that Laura Branigan had passed away. She was a wonderful singer and far too underrated.

1984's Self Control represents Laura at her pinnacle of everything.

The album starts off with "The Lucky One", which begins as a ballad but becomes one of her most irresistable dance numbers. The song was a top 20 hit but IMO deserved to go top 10. "Self Control" is without a doubt Laura's quintessential recording. A sexy midtempo track that never grows old. This is not only my favorite Laura track, but one of my all time favorite songs ever recorded. "Ti Amo" is a great ballad that should've done better than it did as well. Of the non-singles, I am especially fond of "Satisfaction" and her cover of "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow"

I remember buying this on LP when it first came out and the sound was incredible. Listening to this CD brings me back to that. Since the original was an audio recording that's all they could do when they brought this to CD and I think the sound is incredible. All of her songs that she ever sang are the best especially "Self Control". She did a remix of this song called "Self Control 2004" which is kind of cool but the original is the best. I never was able to see her live in concert because my parents couldn't afford it so all I could do is listen to her music and it's not the same. She will be greatly missed.

Born in 1957, Laura Branigan first set her sights on the stage and attended New York's American Academy of Dramatic Art before becoming a noted back-up vocalist. In 1982 she scored a major hit with the single "Gloria;" suddenly much in demand, she soon generated a second album with the hits "Solitare" and "How Am I Supposed To Live Without You"--and then in 1984 released SELF CONTROL. It would be her high-water mark as a recording artist.

Branigan was not a songwriter, but she and her managers knew a good thing when they heard it. Although the first half of SELF CONTROL is stronger than the second, there's not a weak cut in the entire collection. Although there are several ballads on the album, most might best be described as classic 1980s top 40 material, usually mixing an up-tempo dance-friendly beat with sharp guitars.

The collection opens with "The Lucky One," a song that did very well on the charts, fast-paced and crackling with cynical lyrics and tremendous energy; the memorable "Ti Amo" begins delicately but soon transforms into harder edges; a cover of the Carole King classic "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" is delicately performed and remarkably fine. Even so, at least to my mind, the single most memorable track here is the title cut, a dark and disturbing pop-rocker concerning obsessive love; it has an unexpectedly sado-maschochistic edge that perfectly captures the mixture of self-indulgence and sexual paranoia of the decade.

Popular music of the 1980s was beset by excessive synthesizer and intrusive back-up vocals, and SELF CONTROL is no exception. Even so, Branigan's voice carries the weight of these flaws very well. Branigan was said to possess a five-octive voice, but her work here stays almost entirely in the alto range: solid, full-bodied, with an unexpectedly slow vibrato that adds a remarkable sense of emotion to her lyrics.

Branigan's music career gradually faultered as the 1980s wore on and she returned to acting, often appearing on television and in 2002 receiving solid reviews for a New York stage musical bio of Janis Joplin. With her career seemingly on an upturn, fans were shocked when she died suddenly in 2004 of a brain aneurysm. Fortunately, SELF CONTROL and other recordings remain to beguile us.

You would think that following the album life of the party would be impossible. Well the planet smashers did it. They made another great album. buy this album and you won't regret it.

As good as a "Catman" OST ;3.......2004-07-12

I found these guys through a Japanese shockwave animation called Catman. I had never really heard ska, and was taken with the sound of this band immediately. It has a brassy, almost jazz-like feel, and you can't help but sing and dance along with them. I find this stuff feels most like summer. ;3 I really love this album, and think you all should buy it. (Particularly those of you who are chain-smoking cat people ^^ )

A Completely Biased Review.......2003-06-19

I thought these guys rocked way before they started writing songs about me ("Blind" and "No Self Control", if you must know). But even without the musical flattery, I'd still think this is one of their best albums. If you're a new fan, though, you have to get the "Attack Of.." album, too, so you can sing along to Pee in the Elevator at shows.

A GREAT SKA BAND !!!.......2003-04-29

I just heard of this band the other day and I was blown away with how good they were. All of their CDs are great, but I have to say that this is the best one. Every song on this CD has an awesome skankin' beat. I think the best song is probably "SK8 or Die." You should definitely get this CD!

The remixes of "Self Control" are awesome! Her vocals are good and the music is sleek and fresh Hi-NRG dance music. All the mixes are hot. Get this CD, you won't be sorry.

Laura's back!.......2004-03-28

I have been waiting for remixes of this song to come along. I
heard this song in its 1999 Remix. It was a Euro-NRG mix with male rap. I really like these remixes. I heard the Force Four mix on a mix CD last year. I'll speak briefly about them.

The three Mindworkers mixes are amazing. I would compare these versions to DJ Sammy, Alice Deejay, and Rob Searle's remixes. Very progressive, and big-room sounding. I love the whole breakbeat thing in the middle of each mix. I wish they did a full breaks mix.

The Flip & Fill Remix is really good too. It is really progressive. Similar to other Flip & Fill stuff. It's danceable, and would be the remix of choice when playing it in a club. I have noticed that Flip & Fill has done a lot of remixes of classic songs that have resurfaced. I have not complaints.

The Force Four Remix is my favorite mix. The arrangement reminds me of the the original mix. But I don't like the flow of it. But it sounds fine.

The Kenny Hayes Club Mix is a great mix. It is a nice combo of house and trance. This one reminds me of Alex Gold and Chicane's work. It sounds perfect for playing in those sets.

I highly recommend this one if you like all those Alice Deejay, Darude, DJ Tiesto, DJ Sammy, N-Trance types of music.

I also suggest picking up the 1999 version of the song. It is really rare now, but it is worth it.

2. FLIP & FILL REMIX 6:45(4.9 stars) I am suprised that I have not heard this remix at South Beach The Night Club, the ultimate dance club in Houston Texas as yet. I love all the musical elements that this remix has to offer. I HAVE NEVER DONE DRUGS but this remix will get you HIGH!
3. MINDWORKERS REMIX 7:06 (5 stars) If God is a DJ then this is the remix that the Angels among us dance to when we are clubbing on a Saturday Night; When the music really moves you, you feel like you are flying. That is your Guardian Angel taking you on natural high. "This night will never go."
4. FORCE FOUR REMIX 7:48(3.9 stars) This remix will wear you out! If u are full of energy and love to "get down" this remix is for you. It is my least favourite because it doesn't FLOW so to speak. The DJ's rushed this remix to get it o the disc?
5. KENNY HAYES CLUB MIX 6:06(5 stars) This remix starts off somewhere between trance and house music. Mellow and Kool with Laura Branigan singing. The beats are not necessarily that fast compared to the other tracks. I love it! REALLY!
6. MINDWORKERS INSTRUMENTAL 7:04 (5 stars) There are no vocals here. This is a powerhouse remix that is loaded with mindblowing effects that will rule your brain. Get up on the dance floor my darlings and shake more than just your tail feathers! "Don't just stand there looking at me." "CAN YOU MOVE?!"

ps: The cover art work is really cool. Tip: compare it to the maxi single cover of Sinead O'Conner's TROY (phoenix from the flame)

Decent but Not Spectacular.......2004-03-08

The initial problem with the remixes of this song is they tried to improve on a track that is Dance-Pop perfection. Secondly, the mixes could have been a lot better if there were better remixers with higher quality mixes. The mixes seem to be limited to Trance. Where are the Dance-Pop, Garage/House, Down-Tempo, Euro-Dance, Hi-NRG, Filter Disco, and Rave mixes? The mixes could have been so much more. Her voice is still energetic and distinctive. So, what you are left with are decent and pleasant mixes but nothing spectaclar.

Great Artist - Bad Re-Mixes.......2004-03-03

Laura is one of the gifted artists with a powerhouse voice. Too bad she didn't record more. I love her stuff. That being said, forget these remixes of Self Control. One of them practically burries Laura's vocals! I know dance re-mixes are for dancing, but they can also be exciting and listenable at the same time. These are just junk. Over synthesized and boring. If you had one too many at the club, you might be fooled into thinking this was half decent.
