This is a fun, chill album. Throw it on and get your house shoes on. Put the lights down low, get a drink and settle in for a good jazzy mellow time. None of the explosive jams from her Cibo Matto days, but Miho still brings the goods to this collaboration with Smokey Hormel. Don't expect Cibo Matto, because Cibo Matto this is not, but it's still very good, and worth your time.

4 out of 5 stars Eclectic, lounge-y hipster world music.......2003-01-04

The smooth, versatile rock guitarist Smokey Hormel (known for his work with Tom Waits, Beck, and others) and vocalist Miho Hatori (of Cibo Matto fame) teamed up out of their mutual appreciation for the haunting 1966 album, "Os Afro Sambas," a Brazilian bossa nova classic by guitarist Baden Powell and poet Vinicius De Moraes that remains mysteriously hard to find, even in this golden age of collector reissues. The Smokey & Miho band formed in 2001 to recreate the entire album in a series of live performances; their first 5-song EP, "Smokey & Miho," built on the mellow, lounge-y bossa vibe (but was mostly made up of original Hatori-Hormel material, along with a cover of an obscure Angolan pop song by Euclides F. Pereira). On their follow-up EP, they stick to the old stuff, covering four songs off the original "Afro Sambas" album, as well as a fifth vintage Powell/De Moraes composition, "Consolacao." The entire "Tempo De Amor" EP is a delight -- Hatori's vocals recapture the feel of the original vocals by the all-female Quarteto Em Cy, while Hormel's fluid guitar work is able to build apon Powell's haunting music, bringing a new modern warmth to the spooky source material. Fans of classic Brazilian bossa nova should love this affectionate homage. Highly recommended!

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD.......2004-03-28

I got this because I adored Cibo Matto's music--it's so good that I can't stop listening to it. Miho's voice is wonderfully child-like and it evokes an enchanting atmospheric mood over these 10 songs. Cibo Matto did have a slight bassa nova sound in their final CD, which Miho explores to its fullest extent here. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Too Good Be True.......2004-02-18

I love Cibo Matto and miss them dearly, so when I heard they had done solo projects, I bought this. It is one of those CDs that I cannot stop listening to. The music is unbelievably smooth and the voices are perfect together.

    5 out of 5 stars S&M Rock my world.......2003-10-10

Miho's smooth voice compliment the bossa nova stylings of baden powell. This eclectic group is a must have for music lovers, and it's great to have smokey & miho's two awesomely fantastic eps in one simple CD. Cheers!

5 out of 5 stars like Gal Costa.......2004-07-10

Miho Hatori has the same type of voice, Gal Costa and Maria Creuza (who used to sang along with Vinicius) had in the 60's and 70's , soft, tender, in a unique brasileira way- doesn't matter Miho is not Brazilian, her voice sounds brasileira-. If you like bossa nova, go for it.

2 out of 5 stars Vinicius never had such a weak voice!.......2003-02-27

Imagine Minnie Mouse making a Brazilian demo record. That is what this resembles. Everything clicks here except Miho's shy, squeaky vocals. This CD is very uneven: the songs were written by geniuses, the instrumentals are lovely, and the vocals are just pitiful. What a waste of a good opportunity!

5 out of 5 stars I finally got it and it was worth the wait!.......2003-01-06

This is great music for drawing and driving. I play this CD in my painting class. Its both relaxing + rhythmic enough not to be distracting. Really good stuff -- go to a concert!

    5 out of 5 stars Magnificent!.......2005-12-26

Os Afro-Sambas was originally recorded in 1966, while this one without Vinicius de Moraes, was done by Baden Powell, Quarteto em cy (as the original), and others nearly quarter century later. Os Afro-Sambas is certainly one of the most important works of contemporary Brazilian Music truly reflecting the transition period from the stylish Bossa Nova of the late 50's to the revolutionary Tropicalia of the late 60's. Eight of the eleven compositions are the same of the original one, while two are also compostions of Baden and Vinicius from the same period and the opening was made by Baden alone specially for this recording.

All tracks reflect religious syncretism, the mixture of West African religions of slavery origin and the European Catholicism, found mostly on Bahia State in form of Ubanda and Candoble religions. The most frequent music theme is love, specially love delusions and solitude. The understanding of singed Brazilian Portuguese would be a must to get into Vinicius poetry in full depth, as there are no lyrics on this set. As one of the most important contemporary Brazilian poets Vinicius de Moraes also has an important role on Brazilian Popular Music with his solo and works with other Brazilian musicians. His work with Baden is an encounter with one of the best Brazilian guitar players, whose strong classical influence is fantastically merged into samba.

This album uses all the sound technology available on 90's so its is pristine recording, which permits to the listener distinguish easily all the different percussion instruments. The 66 album was recorded on a 2 channel studio, and this means a huge difference in sound quality, Now the original one is only available on both Vinicius and Baden complete works box set. Although this 1990 recording is not the original one, Baden tried to keep this version as similar as possible as to the 66' one giving us opportunity to fully appreciate this hallmark of Brazilian Music. There is also an interesting religious aspect to be mentioned. The Brazilian afro religions are not well tolerated by the evangelic Christians. Later in his life when Baden had converted to an evangelic cult he renegaded this work changing afro words to more Christian oriented ones during presentations.

Certainly this CD is an excellent choice.

    Sarava !

    5 out of 5 stars re-recording.......2003-10-10

I believe this is a 1990 re-recording of the original 1966 classic. Kind of hi-fi sounding and more pristine. The original is probably more funky and gritty. Think its out of print though, I haven't been able to find a copy.

    5 out of 5 stars Os Afro-Sambas de Baden e Vinicius.......2005-12-02

The year 1966 would be very important for Baden's career. Firstly, he would get to know the jazz expert Joachim-Ernst Behrend, who would produce "Tristeza On Guitar" and invite him to Germany, where more important contacts for his career would develop. Secondly, he recorded an album of songs, that were the result of an intense work with Vinicius de Moraes: Os Afro-Sambas. These songs were his biggest contribution to Brazilian music history and will always keep alive Baden Powell's name and memory.

      5 out of 5 stars great CD.......2002-09-19

This is a fantastic CD! It has all the familiar samba elements -- i.e. the upbeat, infectious rhythm, the melacholic melodies -- and so much more.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing re-working.......2000-08-25

This was recorded in 1990, and is actually a re-working of the groundbreaking "Os Afro Sambas", recorded in 1966 with legendary Brazilian poet/songwriter/beatnik Vinícius de Moraes (with vocal help from the wonderful Quarteto em Cy, as on this new work). Unfortunately, Vinícius had passed away by the time Powell got around to re-recording their masterpiece. Powell's reason for re-working this was because the sound quality of the original sessions wasn't the best, as well as the fact that everyone was drunk and sloppy! The original recording is great--and this is an amazing re-working. I'm a huge Powell fan, and this is among his best--he hasn't lost his touch. Amazing guitar work, strong compositions, and top-notch production. The style is a blend of samba, African rhythms and a touch of classical guitar. (By the way, in case you're looking for the original "Os Afro Sambas", the CD by the same title on Amazon is actually a French pressing of the newer CD--this is the one I own. I think the only available copies of the original are imports from Japan).

5 out of 5 stars A real treat for the ears, and soul!.......1998-07-30

I bought the CD on the strength of the first reviewer's recommendation, and immediately found why it was sought for so long. This is a refreshing departure from the well-established samba mold. It is more than well-played, well-arranged music. It has a raw, mystical power rare in modern commercial music. Five stars for sure!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing, Brazilian music at it's best!!!.......1998-07-01

Great music, the guitar is incredible, the vocals are subtle and haunting!!! My brother had a copy in South America, and I have been looking for it a couple of years with out luck!! Today I just click it and there it is...
