Here's where world fusion really begins, with the marriage of Scots tunes (most notably in the puirt-a-beul--mouth-music--tradition, which gives the band its name), African percussion, and dance beats. Instrumentalist Martin Swan and singer Talitha MacKenzie make a formidable and imaginative team, taking songs to places you've never dreamed of, all underpinned by a very fat 303 bass. While it all makes for great listening, "Seinn O!" is a true standout, as is "Chi Mi Na Morbheanna," with beautiful fiddle by Martyn Bennett. Out of this record comes the inspiration for Afro Celt Sound System, Transglobal Underground, and a host of other bands, but the album is more than a precursor. It's a joyous event in itself whose ideas and music still stand tall, with MacKenzie in particular emerging as a real star. Essential. --Chris Nickson
From the Label
This acclaimed debut album makes a remarkable and unique fusion, as Martin Swan and Talitha MacKenzie mix the "mouth music" -- puirt-a-beul -- of Gaelic Scotland with the polyrhythms of Africa, aided by the liberating influence of keyboard technology and samples.
Swan's unorthodox approach to composition and MacKenzie's vocal (ir)reverence succeed through their effective "abuse of source material," for which Swan cites David Byrne's and Brian Eno's MY LIFE IN THE BUSH OF GHOSTS as a strong influence. " It's a matter of finding a strong rhythm which complements (the traditional song structures) and then creating some kind of tension or powerful or surprising harmonic context in which they happen....(I try to find an) environment in which that song becomes even stronger than it is."
Swan and MacKenzie based MOUTH MUSIC on traditional Gaelic source materials, much of which MacKenzie first discovered when she traveled to Edinburgh to study Scottish and Gaelic culture in depth. "There's something about ancient Gaelic songs that's different....straight from the heart and very intense," says MacKenzie. MOUTH MUSIC is that and more, creating something very new from something ancient.

Album Description
While this new album maintains its artistic mix of aurora borealis-avant-indie pop and post-punk, "Church Mouth" paves a new musical path for the band. A departure from 2006's drum-machine and sequencer-heavy "Waiter: You Vultures!", "Church Mouth" leans on Led Zeppelin, The White Stripes, and Santana for inspiration. Front man John Gourley was also listening to a lot of Blind Willie Johnson, Muddy Waters, and Robert Johnson when he wrote the record. While most of us who grew up in the continental US were raised on Saturday morning cartoons and sugary cereal, Gourley's Alaskan upbringing was unorthodox; his youth spent exploring nature in one of the few virtually untouched territories left in the world. As a result, his striking enigmatic vision makes its mark on the band's packaging, merch design, videos, photos, posters, and the music.Customer Reviews:
Excellent follow up effort.......2007-08-04
An exceptional sophomoric record, Church Mouth displays the brilliance of tracks like "Elephant" and "Tommy" from their first album with a more bluesy, mature, and complete sound.
As the first reviewer mentions, comparisons with The Mars Volta are no doubt inevitable. I found the EP It's Complicated Being a Wizard more in line with TMV's experimental, atmospheric sound, but said comparisons are not out of place here. I think Portugal is a bit more restrained than anything from Cedric and Omar et al., and it's all more condensed (3 and a half minute songs instead of 12 minutes...) but the analogy holds true.
Overall it's quite good. Can't wait to see them at El Corazon later this month. Definitely their best album to date.

Expounding on the theme from their hit "Walking on the Sun" (from the multiplatinum Fush Yu Mang), the verbose songs on Astro Lounge are filled with examinations of societal ills, personal woes, and other disappointments entailed in this thing known as Humanity. Yes, the album would seem heavy-handed were not the overriding sentiments filtered through Smash Mouth's "Hey, dude, let's party!" brand of musical optimism. Ranging from reggae to lounge to psychedelia to surfer rock to a sort of punk-a-go-go, Smash Mouth's influences have little in common with one another save for one important exception--they all evoke images of personal freedom and defiance of oppression, reminding us that, gee, fighting the Man can actually be raucous good fun! It's been a long time since a band with this much commercial potential could say something thought-provoking and get the party going. On "All Star," Steve Harwell sings, "Only shooting stars break the mold." A fitting prophecy for this outstanding alterna-pop album. --Beth MassaCustomer Reviews:
Light summertime pop (4.5/5).......2007-07-09
The album begins with "Who's There," an electronic-pop ode to aliens, just for fun. "Diggin' Your Scene" is a bullhorn-delivered song with a driving beat, a very memorable tune. "I Just Wanna See" is slow and laidback, I like this song too. On "Waste," Harwell takes a depressed look at life from someone with nothing going on, it's the album's most somber moment. This gives way to the classic single "All Star," one of the most unforgettable songs of the nineties. From the ironic lines to the hook that everybody knows, this song was awesome and still is. "Satellite" exudes a little Latin influence, but also comes off as nostalgic in an effective, seductive style. "Radio" is a humorous straight-rock song, a highlight, and "Stoned" is a cleverly produced stoner's anthem anchored by a repetitive organ line. This song doesn't promote drug use so much as talk of its overall effects, and the music fits the song really well. The second single "Then the Morning Comes" is another beautifully constructed pop rock song with funny lyricism and great songwriting and production, with the classic Smash Mouth sound. "Road Man" is the band's infamous foray into reggae territory, personally I love this song. "Fallen Horses" is a slower song that picks up towards the end, and "Defeat You" is one of the most unlikely highlights, a hard rocker that displays some great guitar playing. "Come On Come On" is my absolute favorite here, an extremely catchy, organ-heavy pop anthem. The aforementioned "Home" borders on hip hop territory, but the irony of the lyrics has Smash Mouth's signature stamp. A cover of the well-known "Can't Get Enough of You Baby" closes the tracklist.
While it certainly won't be remembered as one of the best rock albums of the 90s, "Astro Lounge" was a well constructed, consistent pop album that spawned multiple hits and created pure entertainment for thousands. Even eight years later, it remains as fun a listen as it did in 1999, and I suggest a purchase to any fans of the singles.
This isn't too bad.......2006-11-24
Much more than just "All Star".......2006-06-21
Now we come to Smash Mouth's "Astro Lounge," with their retro rock, peppered with surf and pop overtones. There were times in 1999 or 2000 when I thought the local pop radio station only had three tunes: Santana's "Smooth," Lenny Kravits "Fly Away," and Smash Mouth's "All Star." So needless to say, I grew really sick of the song. It's not Smash Mouth's fault some radio stations seemed to have lost a few shipments of hit singles that summer. Actually, the overplaying "All Star" made me take a closer look at some of the other tracks on the disc.
The true gems on this record are the lesser known more mellow tracks like "Waste," "I Just Wanna See," and "Fallen Horses." I really love the opening guitar riff in "Defeat You."
I had the opportunity to see Smash Mouth Live a few years back, and they play just like their "feel good, life of the party" reputation. They never seem too take themselves too seriously, and honestly looked like they where enjoying themselves.
Still, once Smash Mouth makes its eventual fade from popular music, they should be able to carve out a loyal fan base that they can entertain for years to come.
If you like Smashmouth, this cd {KICKS A**!}.......2006-02-03

A CD Influenced by Early Rock.......2006-01-18
"Diggin' Your Scene" evokes the late sixties with a beat that one can imagine woman in vinyl mini-skirt dancing to while their stoned guys stand mesmerized by the colored lights. The lyrics poke fun at the sixties lingo while describing a guy's obsession with a dangerous woman. The following "I Just Wanna See" has the same kind of fun sound with hippy philosophy: "Doctors and lawyers race for the ball/And I don't even wanna understand it all/I just wanna see." "Then The Morning Comes" nods to the Beach Boys and to the surfer movies of the sixties; you can almost see the montage of skinny hippies and girls in polka dot bikini running toward the ocean. Not all the tracks are retro (except for the fact that the album was released in 1999). The pop chart favorite "All Star" is a catchy tune about embracing the life that fame brings. Ironically, "Stoned" sounds less retro than one would expect. The group's foray in reggae ("Road Man") is less successful than the other tracks.
"Astro Lounge" is rock/pop for those who miss the sixties and seventies -- or wish they had lived through them. -- Debbie Lee Wesselmann

-=- Do Something for Someone You Love, Yourself -=-.......2006-08-05
Track by track:
1. Joe Strummer: Song title bears the name of the deceased front man of the "Only band that mattered." It is a fast-aced song with a theme that resonates in many of the songs written by Fred LeBlanc, a failed relationship. A real toe-taper and get you moving song. It is nice to see the band pay tribute (sort of) to one of the people that they cite as an inspiration to the band (The Clash). Sung by Fred (5/5)
2. Misty Falls: Upbeat song, fast-paced. The guitar sounds are very upbeat in the song as well. I did not care totally for the mix and what the producers did to Fred's voice. His voice sounds stronger that this...(4.5/5)
3. Winds Me Up: JTG sighting... Another fast-paced song...Not my favorite song, but much better than the drivel released by most of today's bands.(4/5)
4. Hole in My Heart: Not to be confused with "Hole Hearted" by Extreme. I can't believe I am typing this but as I am thinking about it... I could see David Lee Roth singing this song -it is in that same vein... Very flamboyant, like on stage in Vegas, complete with dancing monkeys and girls with fire torches...(4/5)
5. Voodoo Shoppe: Title track of the cd. Blusey song... Sung by Fred...(5/5)
6. Slow Down: Paul Sanchez Sighting... Paul's music makes your heart smile. He is an insufferable romantic and it shows in his music.(5/5)
7. This Much Fun: Excellent, upbeat song. Gets your feet moving. The kind of song that makes you realize that you need to get out on the dance floor and not care what anyone else thinks. (5/5)
8. Supersonic: JTG Sighting... Fast-paced song... I did not like some of the arrangement of the song. The mix was okay on it. I usually like everything JTG does, this was only okay for him...(4/5)
9. I Told Ya: Not quite as fast-paced as some of the others, but not slow...I did not feel a connection to this song, so I am not as keen on it. But, as I said on a previous track, much better than the drivel of today's bands... (4/5)
10. Home: Paul Sanchez Sighting...Symbolic of what everyone from New Orleans and the New Orleans area went through with Hurricane Katrina. It sums up our feelings as the time away from the city grew from days to weeks. It makes me mad at how inadequately this government was prepared for a natural disaster and how the government seems to be able to help those abroad better than citizens on our own homeland... (5/5)
11. Glad to Be Alive: This song would be the best one on the disk if it weren't for Joe Strummer or the tracks it is sandwiched between. This is an upbeat, fast-paced song that gets your heart humming along with it. This is the type of song that if you are feeling blue, press play and listen to it and you will be feeling much better about yourself and life in general. This is especially important to those who survived Katrina. Although it is not specifically about Katrina, when I hear it, I think of everything that we have been through in New Orleans and how it is great to be alive. Yes, I am glad to be alive...(5/5)
12. The Avenue: The other major song inspired by the events of Hurricane Katrina. The Avenue is a little different than the other songs. This song is a ballad not fast-paced at all. It tells the story of people in New Orleans as Katrina went through the area. The Avenue tells of the sadness in the hearts of those of us here, specifically the protagonist in the song. (5/5)
Overall, this is a smokin' cd. Take it with you for your last summer party, slip it in the stereo. Import it and listen to it on your iPod. People may look at you, but who cares?? It's the Mouth!!!!!!

Best Cowboy Mouth CD of All.......2005-09-13
I just had to delete my review from several months ago..........2005-01-01
Musically this album is quite diverse, as I already pointed out. Odds are if you're looking at this it's because you heard the single off of it, "Jenny Says." That is without question a great song, but there really isn't a worse representation the rest of the music on this album. However, a song needed to be released to radio, and it is almost the only song on here that would fully fit in with mainstream radio stations, and therefore I understand-it is all good. Though when purchasing this album, I went on the assumption that the rest of the songs would be like "Jenny Says," and while I have now come to love the rest of the album, I was gravely mistaken then. "Love of My Life" is probably the song closest in style to it, but other than that the songs are a lot more laid back and more country, softer alternative influenced. So, in conclusion here, if you are thinking about buying this album based on that one single, give the other ones a listen first to see if you dig them as well.
My personal favorite tracks on this disc are "Jenny Says," just because it was my intoduction to the Mouth, "God Makes the Rain," "Man On the Run," and "Peacemaker." I don't know why some people don't like "Peacemaker," I think the second vocalist (sorry, I don't know his name) does an excellent jobs on mellower songs and he really shines in this one particularly. The greatest amount of country influence you could find on here lies within the track "Light It On Fire." That was actually the second song I heard off of this record, after only "Jenny Says," and while I generally despise most country, I really like this song. It really does amaze me how much I like this guys in spite of their coutry influence. I don't like country, and hate the current state it's in these days even more, but when these guys throw in some more elements and mix things up a little bit, it makes for a truly magnificent result.
This is without a doubt my favorite CD in my collection to just chill out to. Whenever I need a break from heavier side of things, nothing hits the spot better than this album. Don't come in with a narrow mind; give this record a chance, and you just might end up finding that your musical taste is even more diverse than you thought it to be. After all, just look at me.
sigh... awesome.......2004-06-21
Two songs are especially outstanding: the uniquely objective "How Do You Tell Someone," which somehow manages to convey the pathos of breaking up without casting judgment on the parties involved, and the light-as-air "Louisiana Lowdown," whose witty lyrics and laissez-faire attitude make it the only song in history that brings an immediate smile to my face, no matter what.
There are some weak spots. I'm not the biggest fan of "Fire," and there's way too much country in "Man on the Run" and "Peacemaker," although John Thomas Griffith gets to shine on "Laughable," at least.
Still, a great album from one of the most funny, energetic, and life-affirming bands out there. Can't wait to see them live again.

After scoring one of the most infectious chart hits of the '90s with their debut's "Walkin' in the Sun," San Jose's Smash Mouth further refined their retrograde cocktail of ska/surf/rock/pop influences via the follow-up hit "All Star" and a raft of mainstream soundtrack appearances that virtually guaranteed them a critical backlash. But on this, their first album on their own Beautiful Bomb label, SM apologize for none it. If anything, they've further burnished their pop sheen, expanding the back-to-the-future philosophy that's the cornerstone of their sound a bit in the bargain. Penned by frontman Steve Harwell, the single "The Story of My Life" injects some Rock of the '80s jitters into the mix, while the band variously evokes Merseybeat innocence on "Girl Like You" and suffuses "So Insane" with some greasy, melodic funk. If the B-52s echoes of "Getaway Car" underscore SM's penchant for sometimes pushing their pop-cloning gambit too far, songs like the bouncy title track and the bittersweet ballad "Right Side, Wrong Bed" argue that they're content to forge inviting, party-ready rock confections-- a feat they've accomplished again here with typically insouciant charm. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

Smash Mouth's true comeback. Don't hit the beach without it........2007-05-14
So that's the M.O. for Greg, Steve, Paul and newcomer Jason Sutter this time out (although former drummer Michael Urbano leaves his fingerprints on some of the beats and production work here). While any lesser band would backpedal and try to regain some rock-group-cred by pretending Astro Lounge and its successors never happened. Smash Mouth, however, are well aware they already betrayed the hipsters beyond apology, and instead simply pick up where their fans' expectations for that album left off: a varied--but positively rockin'--collection of songs that sound good anywhere... but reach their full potential behind a pair of cool-looking shades between May and August with a cool drink in one hand and the sunblock in the other. So rarely does a band recognize where they are and, concurrently, where they've been. Even rarer is a band that can fit it all into one coherent sound. This album's got the grit of Fush Yu Mang, the variety and songcraft of Astro Lounge, the poppy charm of their self-titled and the feel-good summer vibe of Picture--the main difference is now it's got substance courtesy of the previous three elements. Take the title track, with its lazy-beach-days organ riff, but when the hook comes in with all its self-assuredly charming naiveté, you realize you can stop holding your breath; Smash Mouth's found their footing once again. Quality Control--the surprising but essential middle finger to Clear Channel--feels like a walk through the dilapidated Astro Lounge with the quasi-creepy space-rock that ran wild on that album and remained an undercurrent. And then there's Right Side, Wrong Bed, the first acoustic tune since I Just Wanna See that doesn't feel obligatory (despite its being the only one here).
What's the most surprising is how well Smash Mouth--formerly a common example of the kind of band that gets funding as a result of the laziness and greed of record execs with their frequent soundtrack contributions and by-the-numbers covers--make the transition to a full-fledged indie band, selling this record off of their own "Beautiful Bomb" label. In fact, the only element of this process they don't have down yet is the timing; they couldn't possibly have meant to release this sunny record in September. But it's an easily forgivable offense, mainly just because it's a big relief to have Smash Mouth back doing what they do best: pop that's so much fun it seems other bands are afraid to make it.

a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-11
Shape-note music evolved with the 'singing school', an American institution dating back to the early 18th century. In Colonial days, traveling singing masters taught part-singing to townsfolk in a community activity that combined sacred and secular values.
The singing-school music was usually sung a cappela and in 3 or 4 parts-tenor(or melody), bass, treble, and usually alto or counter.
By the early 1800's, the music of New England tunesmiths-William Billings,
Daniel Reed, Justin Morgan, and others-had spread throughout the Southern and Central states. There , together with folk hymns and camp-meeting songs, it formed the basis for a sturdy tradition of community singing and religious expression.
The 'Sacred Harp', first compiled in 1844 by two Georgians, Benjamin Franklyn White and his assistant E.J. King, is one of the richest collections of tunes; it is also one of the few shape-note books from that era still in print today.
The sound of Sacred Harp singing has several elements: The surging beat, the intonation of the singers, the minor-modal melodies, and the open harmonies. In the Sacred Harp tradition, mens's and women's voices double the tenor and treble parts, with men and women alone singing the bass and alto, respectively. Dynamics are sacrificed for a uniformly strong sound.
This disc does indeed fulfill all the requirements of shape-singing and therefore is an invaluable contribution to the historian, the teacher of many subjects especially in the arts and humanities. To sit down and listen to it in its entirety is not too enjoyable, unless you are involved with a specific activity that makes it necessary to do so. As a voice teacher, it annoys me with the type of singing it demands such as chest-tone most of the time. But, as I stated above, this is really not for entertainment purposes. The 'Word of Mouth' chorus is to be commended for keeping alive this very important segment of our Musical History and tradition.

Shape-note perfection.......2002-07-30
The result was that they completely rethought and relearned how to perform this music. They don't sound like a normal church choir here; they sound raucous and untutored, with loud nasal voices sticking out of a group of other loud, raucous voices. The effect is exhilerating; the drive and energy are like nothing you've ever heard. Other recordings of the shape note music of the Sacred Harp tradition of the American South take the brash rough edges off the tone. Not here -- you get the real deal; raw, edgy, unabashed, and a lot of fun.

Great album. Not watered-down pop as you would expect........2005-11-12
Walkin' On the Sun is the most popular, but is personally my least favourite; It's a good song, but is more pop-y and shows less tallent then any other song on the album.
The music style is a mixture of ska and rock, but most old time punk fans will like most of the songs on the album a lot.
I give this album 5 stars for a reason. It's the stepping stones of what could have been a great band.
Smash Mouth did not evolve when Astro Lounge was released. They de-volved. Astro lounge was pop, and nothing but it. Smash Mouth was in awe of the popularity of Walkin' On The Sun and sold out in the blink of an eye.
Shame on Smash Mouth.
Buy this album, and don't buy any other ones by Smash Mouth. Pretend this is their only one; You'll only be dissapointed otherwise.
(Music-wise, this album gets an 8.5/10 in my book. Some of the chord progressions in Padrino and Disconnect the Dots are pure genius)

For some strange reason, very few MCs have managed to display their comedic abilities on the mic. Not so Akinyele, who flips the tip in different directions depending on his mood; with a roughneck voice and a delivery akin to Busta Rhymes's (and the remarkable vocal agility to ape Biz Markie when the occasion calls for it), Ak manages to have it both ways. While he does a nice job on this EP's straight-up rap songs, it's the title cut that distinguishes this CD: "Put It in Your Mouth" is, easily, the lewdest hip-hop song out there. An ode to oral sex of all varieties, it's the type of thing Redd Foxx would be doing if he had been born at the right time; that it's also an insanely melodic single with a singable chorus makes it a must for parties. --Randy SilverCustomer Reviews:
