This set is primarily for devoted fans of Beverly Sills, for fans of Sherrill Milnes in his prime, and for those who must have the uncut version where it's available. The estimable Ms. Sills was in less than ideal voice for the making of this recording, which is unfortunate, but the artistry still shines through. Mr. Milnes sings with rich tone. But Lorin Maazel's conducting is leaden and out of empathy with the score. --Sarah Bryan Miller

4 out of 5 stars Lapsing Faith and Lost Beauty.......2006-09-23

The reason I assign the recording four stars rather than five is that the pathos of the opera strikes me as too extreme. The same combination of exquisite beauty and suffocating pathos turns up in Barbra Streisand's song "The Way we Were." Beverly Sills sings the pathetic part of Thais to the hilt; and Massenet's familiar "religious meditation" does the rest. All of these intensely pathetic operas including Pagliacci and Tosca derive from the epoch-making example of Wagner's Tristan und Isolde with its unrelieved love-and-death sorrow. As a Christian I associate this powerful tradition with lapsing faith in Europe after 1865. Massenet's opera treats the early Christian monks of Egypt as caught up in tragic error. Thais is a supremely beautiful woman won from a life of immorality to Christianity by a well-intentioned monk who knew her in his earlier days. As the converted Thais lives and dies for the abstract reward of heaven, the monk grieves over the beauty he has destroyed. The real spiritual solution to the dilemma posed by the opera lies in the correlation between future resurrection, universal vitality and intense beauty; but theologians have generally missed he point and shown more interest in heaven than in concrete resurrection. In any case there was no way out for Massenet and his source.

5 out of 5 stars Stylish Thais Set.......2005-10-16

This 1976 recording of Thais is my favorite of the two recordings I have - the other being the Fleming/Hampson. Sills' vibrato is a little more pronounced here than it was a few years earlier, but it doesn't bother me. She still has a gorgeous voice and brings this conflicted character vividly to life. Having studied with the likes of Mary Garden as a young singer, Sills has an innate understanding of the French style, and uses her voice with much imagination and flair. Also, the character of Thais is not supposed to be a young girl - an aging courtesan of 30ish or so... Sherrill Milnes, in a departure from his usual Italian repertoire, sings a most impassiaoned Athaneal - the voice full and resonant, the character's obessiveness wonderfully realized. I think he never did anything better on disc. Nicolai Gedda is a little past his best here, but like Sills understands the French style and delivers the vocal goods as required. Maazel conducts an exciting performance (even playing the solo violin in the Meditation himself) and the sound is excellent. The Fleming/Hampson set is beautifully sung, but I feel the drama of the story is not fully realized somehow - hard to put my finger on what's missing there. This Thais is one of my favorite French opera recordings - recommended highly.

5 out of 5 stars AN UNDER-APPRECIATED GEM.......2004-12-03

Late 19th-century French opera is often disparaged these days, which isn't really fair. Delibes had some beautiful melodies, and Massenet was a much better composer than many give him credit for. And although "Manon" and "Werther" may be more famous, to me, his late opera "Thais" is his masterpiece. There are three major recordings of this opera, one with Anna Moffo, Gabriel Bacquier and Jose Carreras, a recent one with Renee Fleming, Thomas Hampson and Giuseppe Sabattini, and this 1976 recording with Beverly Sills, Sherill Milnes, and Nicolai Gedda. All three versions have their strengths and weaknesses. The Moffo/Bacquier vesion, although excellent and showing Carreras in his prime, is unavailable. (I'm not sure it was ever issued in CD.) The Fleming/Hampson recording is also excellent--Fleming has a gorgeous and luscious voice, and Hampson a silky smooth baritone--but I find myself reaching for the Sills/Milnes version most often.
Sills was past her prime when she recorded this, and her high notes are a little thin and sometimes wobbly. Nevertheless, her artistry is so great that she infuses the role of the courtesan with the tremendous drama the role requires. Thais' radical change of character, from the insouciant hedonist to the redeemed penitent, is gloriously demonstrated in Sills' portrayal.
And this opera is as much about Athanael as it is Thais. Milnes, at the height of his career when he recorded this in 1976, brings tremendous power and vitality to the role of the priest, whose reverse progression from moralistic religious surety to tortured doubt parallels that of Thais, the object of his forbidden love. Nicolai Gedda's singing is, as always, stylish and graceful, and Loren Maazel's reading of the score is well paced and forceful. This recording belongs in all opera collections.

1 out of 5 stars A fad.......2004-05-21

This Thais is ruined by Sills. Buy Renee Fleming's Thais instead. She has the big voice, the looks and the talent. Sills didn't, all she can do is make my ears bleed. Shame on that shrieker!

3 out of 5 stars Lovely but too late.......2004-02-24

I have a live-recording with Sills which is MUCH better. Sills was always at her best live on stage. For studio-recordings get the Fleming-set or the sadly cut recording with the divine Renee Doria. (My favourite Thais)

5 out of 5 stars Legendary Voices: Rise Stevens.......2007-01-04

Very good, considering the limited state of technology from the period. Very enjoyable recording.

    5 out of 5 stars superb.......2005-12-22

Rise Stevens was the Met's leading mezzo from 1938 to 1961, and after listening to this cd, you will understand why. To begin with, her voice is simply gorgeous; her chiaroscuro is beautifully balanced, and her vocal control is fantastic (though a mezzo, she performs acrobatics one would expect from a great lyric soprano). There is also a rare natural intensity to her sound. And if you thought it couldn't get any better, it does because she interprets the music wonderfully, too. Her "Che faro?" is easily the best out there. Her Carmen ranks among the very best; contemporary reviewers described it as "earthy," "alluring," and "sublime." I prefer it to any other I have heard. Some other interpretations are lovely, too, though perhaps not as definitive. I highly recommend this cd (in case you couldn't already tell); it's just a shame that it's so difficult to come by. It took me three months to track it down, but it's well worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Another testament to the beauties of fine singing.......2003-10-07

Here again we have some of Marilyn Horne's best singing represented in works in which she simply is incomparable. The disk begins with Handel, and in my eyes and to my ears, she has little or no competition in this music (Ewa Podles comes close in excitement, and being a true contralto gives more thrust to the lower notes than Horne, but that is a very little thing when viewing the whole). After enjoying the excitement of sound, and of technique, she brings to this music one is left cold hearing other singers perform it (especially countertenors and those who specialize in "authentic" recordings).

From there we move on to her more familiar arias from the bel canto time period. Again, we are astounded by the mastery she brings to everything she sings.

Horne was famous, and justly so, and while she was alive and actively singing (she is still alive, but not singing actively) no one could match her. Sadly, for a portion of her career she was seen as "Sutherland's Mezzo" which truly diminished her contribution. Fortunately, that stigma was removed and we were able to assess her for what she truly had to offer, which was unbelievable.

There are many collections of Marilyn Horne singing this music, but this one is more complete in the sense it gives you those arias you really wish to hear, missing out some that are not so exciting. True, there are others were wish were included in this set.

If you enjoy excellent singing, and tons of personality, in your singers, then buy this recording. You will not be disappointed. The sound is very brilliant, and the voice sounds a bit forward, but I think that is the result of the technical work in reprinting this material.

3 out of 5 stars The Only Recording So Far..........1999-12-04

The good--Shirley Verrett has an ample and sultry dramatic mezzo-soprano/soprano voice and sings with endless feeling, color, and detail: a noble and gripping performance. Domingo nearly matches her with golden tone, dramatic insight, and unfailing musicality. Mittleman, Mandac, and the rest of the cast don't disgrace the stars but never reach their level either. Perisson doesn't let the music drag and conducts with verve. The bad--live performance values don't undermine the enjoyment of this set, but add little in the way of ensemble clarity from both singers and orchestra. The added electricity of stage singing (as opposed to studio conditions) is welcome but could be traded for better sonics. The ugly--Why hasn't this opera been commercially recorded? Surely Verrett and Domingo could have found time in their busy 1970's schedules to record parts they obviously own every note of. Another opera-recording-world mystery.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the great French recordings of the century.......1999-02-28

Knowing many of these recordings from the vinyl issue, I rejoice in being able to get them re-mastered. Bernac was not only Poulenc's great interpreter, but a definitive interpreter of other French art songs (and Souzay's teacher).

Let's start with the quibbles, on account of their relative insignificance: 1) I miss the real bells used on the Gjórgiev (especially!!!) and the Abbado recordings (the samples I got to hear alerted me to this - the chimes used here sound poor by comparison); 2) the Russian original-language libretto is incomplete (were more space allowed here, I'd have published the missing parts in the original Russian). [I recommend downloading the libretto from other websites - and then piecing in the few things that are otherwise absent from the regular-performance libretto from the booklet supplied - Rostropóvich's reading gives this opera (a composite of the 1868 and 1872 versions) as completely as possible (the réprise of the Simpleton's scene in the last tableau, originally salvaged from the St. Vasíljiy's (Basil's) tableau cut in the 1872 version and which however was reinstated in this recording, could have been omitted consequently - though I'm glad it wasn't!).] 3) I wish the orchestra (very good indeed!!!) could be heard more even when the singers are in full voice (this defect relative to Culshaw's Wagner recordings - my standard in taste - also afflicts Rostropóvich's otherwise superb recording of Shostakóvich's "Lady Macbeth of Mcjénsk").

Otherwise, a very powerful reading with everybody in peak form fully deserving a full 5 stars - even the venerable arch-star of Russian soprani from 1952-82 (from her début with the Boljshóy to her retirement from live operatic performances - of course she was forced out of the Boljshóy in 1974 into exile...) Vishñévskaja, who was close to being 61 years of age at the time of this recording, comes off as well as everybody else (you could hardly tell her age)! Another success is that of Mira Zakai as one of the nurses (in Act II) - she's much better here than in Solti's recording of Mahler's 2nd Symphony with the CSO (where she sounds so uninvolved as well as plain when compared to Helen Watts or Maureen Forester). Gedda sings the Simpleton's part as movingly as could be anticipated from somebody who has given so much of his career to the Russian repertoire, while Plishka gives a wonderfully warm Pimjén. As to Ruggero Raimondi - wow, what a wonderfully evocative portrayal of the demented Carj (C pronounced as 'ts' like in "bolts"; 'j' just softens the 'r' somewhat...)!!! One doesn't need a bassus profundus (which he's not - though his low notes lack nothing!) to do justice to this rôle after all...

Finally, regarding the version of the score being used: while it's indeed based on the 1872 "definitive" version, much stuff cut therefrom which was in the 1868 original version makes it into the recording (not a note is cut from the score). While obviously the earlier version of Act II as well as a few other snippets in Act I (when Grigóriy wakes up) are superseded (the latter's snippets are merely the same music given to offstage choir instead of the strings as done initially), other things (e.g., the dismissal of the crowd in the Prologue's 1st scene, the scene in front of St. Vasíljiy's Cathedral) are fully reinstated - all of this can be vouched for from the full score 2-book set published by Oxford University Press giving Musórgskiy's original version.

Most definitely recommended in all events and regards!!! [Hopefully Erato will reissue this recording as it's amply deserving!]

5 out of 5 stars a solid, exciting production, supurb sound.......2000-07-29

Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov is so rich that it never can be encompassed by one interpretation, however strong. It's worth having two or more versions, including this one, conducted by Rostropovitch, on hand. Here's how it stacks up with two other fine quality, stereo recordings using Mussorgsky's original orchestration: Abbado's and Gergiev's.

Rostropovitch and the ensemble under his baton, provide both a polished orchestral presentation and dynamic drama dominated by one of the best Borises of the digital age. The story and the music reinforce one another seamlessly.

The dramatic presentation in the Rostropovitch version is much more exciting than that in the Abbado version, which focuses more on creating a flawlessly recorded, stunning symphonic and choral atmosphere. In the Rostropovitch version, beautiful children's voices add both an innocent element to Mussorgsky's dark drama and another stunning instrument to the orchestration. In the perfectly polished Abbado version, adult women with full voices flawlessly sing the children's roles.

Rostropovitch's production lacks some of raw dramatic heft of Gergiev versions, but it has more polish. The Gergiev CD set offers two complete versions, both Mussorgsky's 1868 version and the 1873, each complete and with different casts, making it a bargain, if such a thing can be said about overpriced classical music CDs. The Rostropovitch version contains only the 1872 score.

I have all three versions and listen to all of them with great pleasure. If, heaven forbid, I could only have one, this version conducted by Rostropovitch might be it. It would be a tough call to make.
