Editorial Reviews
Product Description
The hit 2003 album from the French pop artist considered to be a worthy heir to Jacques Higelin, Henri Renaud, Charles Aznavour, Georges Brassens, & Jacques Brel. 12 tracks. BMG/Zomba.
#2: Dis-lui oui: this is one of Benabar's hits and a pretty good song. It has that swing that I like about his music and true originality. It is a fun song, and far better than any American song (see the final paragraph of my Barry Manilow review, "Ultimate Manilow").
#7: Sac a main: now this is some song! Fun, original, catchy; perhaps one of the greatest French songs I've ever heard. This is by far the best song on the album. You can sense such emotion, humor, and charm in this song. I like the big band sound and the frequent changes in rhythm and melody. These are the qualities that make this album good, and thus I have given it a fourth star.
#10: Les mots d'amour: this is a good rock song. Benabar's voice really comes out. I believe rock is where his potential lies, not so much in slower songs. I also like the various voices near the end.
Overall, the album does not take the vital elements, as found in the three above songs, and reach far enough with them. If Benabar makes more songs like the above, especially "Sac a main," he would be great, not just good. I am intrigued enough to pursue his future albums and visit his website: www.benabar.com.
On a somewhat more complimentary note, Benabar sings his lyrics smoothly and clearly. This album is great for someone trying to learn French, as I am. The lyrics come with the cd, which is always a plus. I like the pictures of him punching himself, fighting with himself, etc. Very funny guy; what a goof! This album also won a "Victoire de la Musique 2004" award. Congratulations, Benabar!
Again, I believe that Benabar has loads of potential. He is just starting out. Sing more rock songs and more songs like "Sac a main" and you will be as great as Julien Clerc and other esteemed male French artists!
Benebar has the smooth silky voice of your traditional chanteur (think Charles Trenet) but his material is definitely modern. Sometimes humorous, sometimes wistful, always very French, and almost always enjoyable. There are songs for rainy days, songs for sunny, funny days, and songs for when you just wake up and feel the need to escape. I particularly recommend it for Saturday afternoons when you are stuck cleaning your apartment/house.
On the best songs, such as Sac a main and dis-lui oui, Benabar reveals just enough of his emotional state through the jokey lyrics for the songs to make a double impression: he has real feelings, even though he manages to maintain an illusion of ironic distance. Some of the other ones, though, are a little too maudlin and melodramatic for my taste.
If you like this record, look for Jeanne Cherhal's Douze fois par an. It's the same kind of music, or Les Senegalaises, by Sanseverino, which is similarly wry.
If I could match it up with an English-language record, it would probably be similar to one of the first two Ben Folds Five records.
