If traditional New Age music gives you the willies or if you are already a fan of vocalists such as Marta Sebestyen or Enya, Madredeus's Teresa Salgueiro will bewitch you with her velvety-smooth chanteuserie backed by a classical guitar duo, acoustic bass, and sythesizers. Madredeus, a quintet of Portuguese musicians, take their name from their former rehearsal space, a convent whose abbreviated moniker translates loosely as "Mother God" or "Holy Mother." And though the material on O Paraiso is not religious, the spirit in which Madredeus make their music is full of reverence and deep affection. The strings are water, the voice is wind. Listening to the record is floating, dancing, swimming, swaying--all while sitting perfectly still. --Paige La Grone

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting :.......2006-05-28

I've grown to love the beautiful music from my mother's homeland, "fado". This album by the group Madredeus is beautiful! The music is haunting and strange, while being very soothing. I understand and speak Portuguese, but everyone will get this. "O Paraiso" means "the paradise", this album surely lives up to it's title, enjoy!!!

4 out of 5 stars Soaring, angelic soprano; soulful guitars, synthesizers.......2006-03-23

Sometimes irritatingly New Age Euro-pop. More often a satisfying juxtaposition of Teresa Salgneiro's soaring, angelic soprano and a soulful accompaniment of classical guitars and synthesizers, in med-tempo and (merely) pretty melodies. Growing on me. Stand-outs: tr 6--A praia do mar (sounds like pop variation on simple, stately/courtly, yearning dance). tr 7--O fin da Estrada (for ambiguous meter); tr 8-Agora. tr 12-O sonho (voice soars over a web of strings in lovely melody). 5 out of 5 stars I don't understand..........2006-03-21

...a word of what they are saying.

What I do understand is, for me, this newly discovered sound called fado. This is a mesmerizing tranquil cd that is pure spiritualism. This is some of the finest acoustic guitar ensembles I have heard in quite some time. The angelic voice, haunting at times, is one that enters your viscera.

I started out with one cd, then two, now I must have all of Maderdeus' work. It makes me want to go to Lisbon just to see if there is more of this lurking in the out-of-the-way back alley clubs.

I made the mistake of ordering two of these cd's at the same time. I was going to send one back. But after my wife heard this incredible music she snatched it up and put it in her vehicle.

This music is not for everyone. It is only for one person...you.

Enter fado. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars breathtaking, hauntingly beautiful.......2006-01-26

This whole album can be most aptly described as brilliant. Although the musical line-up is relatively simple, the music is amazingly rich and sophisticated in melodic content. There are almost no weak moments and each and every bit of the songs have timeless and uplifting aura that encapsulates you from the very beginning. The vocals by Teresa Salgueiro is a seminal example of how poetic lyrics can transcend beyond their inherent rendition. Along with flawless orchestration which overcomes the intricacies of merging strong instrumental content with female vocal, Madredeus excels in conveying the melanchonic mood of Portugal even for those who don`t speak Portugese. The overall effect is, however, universal and ethereal...

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking.......2004-08-13

I was introduced to this music by a friend of mine and wasn't sure I'd really like it, but when she began the music for me I just didn't know I could feel so uplifted by music. Teresa's voice is mesmerizing and a pure joy to listen to. This is one of their greatest collections. Although Andorinha da Primavera is my all-time favorite for personal reasons, the entire CD is great to listen to and find your own little private spot in your mind.

This album is just a long drone, (one 65-minute track).
Do I really need another album like that in the krautrock vein? I mean if I want good droney stuff I'd much rather get a Klaus Schulze album than this dull-ish stuff. OR, while we're on the subject, what's wrong with classical? A Mozart symphony soens the same job for me as ART and it's a heck-of-a lot more accomplished musically (sorry for being snarky). Heck, even Ash Ra Tempel is nicer. A.R.T. is the Jandek of Psychadelic right now.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Album!!!.......2006-05-02

I was doing some looking for some other Gerry Mulligan CD's, happened back across this one, and realized there is a serious lack of reviews. What a shame. This is a wonderful album, with every tune being a winner. Mulligan sounds incredible on this, as does Duboc. I had not heard her before hearing her on this CD, but she has a wonderful voice. Bordado (Embroidered) - #6 - is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. Not just Mulligan tunes, but anything. It really does give you goosebumps.

So - give this one a try and you certainly won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful collaboration w/Brazilian singer Jane Duboc.......1999-11-19

I originally purchased this CD in 1994 at a garage sale. Paraiso remains one of my all time favorites to this day. In fact, I have bought several copies as gifts for friends. The music that Mulligan and this immensely talented group of (mostly) Brazilian musicians presented works for me on several different levels. If listening critically, it is a joy to hear Mulligan seemingly float through this material while maintaining the integrity and authenticity of a rather delicate musical genre. At a more casual level, I have attempted to sneak this in as background music while entertaining guests, but this collection of bossas, sambas and the like, refuses to be ignored. Invariably it is commented upon, the volume on my system is increased and conversation stops dead as Paraiso takes center stage. Not only have I shared this CD with friends that are not out and out `jazzers', I have made it a point to expose my core group of friends in the music business to Paraiso. It is an example of an album on which everything was done right, and a stellar example of Brazilian jazz. Without exception the arrangements are rhythmically and melodically interesting. Jane Duboc's intonation is dead on and her tone, breathtaking. Sung in her native Portuguese, these tunes take on a seriously sensual timbre. Technically, the recording was made when Telarc was still considered an audiophile label. The music has a superb, spacious soundstage making very good use of sonic imaging. My preference to have had Mulligan's horn recorded a bit dryer would be my only criticism here. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A delight!.......1999-08-24

This album is a delight. Do not be put off if you do not know Jane Duboc - she is a very pleasant singer. Mulligan complements her very well and, of course, provides most of the charts. It is music to share with your friends who may not be out and out jazzers.

5 out of 5 stars uma dupla fascinante.......1999-07-06

Considero um dos melhores trabalhos da cantora Jane Duboc com o genial Gerry Mulligan, vale a pena

"Now on CD! Originally a vinyl-only live document from everybody's favorite Krautrock-obsessed and über-prolific Japanese hippy freak ensemble, recorded September 10th, 2001 (hence the title)." - AQUARIUS RECORDS

Acid Mothers Temple resides in Japan when they are not touring the world at a nonstop pace. The band has numerous releases, but this particular release is very unique. Featuring the classic Acid Mothers Temple lineup including Kawabata Makoto, Hiroshi Higashi, Cotton Casino, and Tsuyama Atsushi, this recording was taken from an in-store-performance at Reckless Records in Chicago on September 10, 2001. Features a one-of-a-kind version of "La Novia," a classic AMT live staple.

4 out of 5 stars Acid Mothers Temple - 'The Day Before The Sky Fell In' (Eclipse).......2007-03-29

A nicely done in-store appearance that Acid Mothers Temple had played at Restless Records shop in Chicago on September 10, 2001. Notable one day prior to 911. The cover pays tribute to Amon Duul II's 'Yeti' lp. I thought that 'Day Before' was a nice change of pace for Acid Mothers. Instead of the usual space-noise wall of massive sound in-your-face routine, you get to hear AMT's acoustic side. Well for a little bit anyway. Two tracks here, are "Space Age Ballad / La Novia / including a bit of In C" (28:16) and "La Novia (reprise, I assume) /Speed Guru" (18:35). Didn't hear much vocals on this CD at all. Will need to listen to it again. a definite should-have.

      5 out of 5 stars Near perfection..........2001-05-18

Being an instrumentalist, I've never been bothered by the complaints of my friends that Meredith Monk has no lyrics -- like a great, perfectly blended wind ensemble, her cast gives a flawless and nuanced performance throughout. At equal turns ecstasy of beauty, eery and haunting, and laugh-out-loud spritely, the two parts I didn't like on this CD were, unsuprisingly, the improvisational bagpipe and the eery but jarring Madwoman's Song. But with an experimenter like Meredith Monk, not everything will hit with everybody, and these thematically provided appropriate contrast to the unrelenting beauty of the rest of the CD. Ms. Monk's unique style and ever strong voice fit perfectly with the medieval setting. Now, anyone know where to find the movie this is the soundtrack to? I've been intrigued with finding it since the day I got this CD of peace and beauty...

5 out of 5 stars Her most satisfying work.......2000-11-13

The finest, most fully realized Meredith Monk cd, methinks. The medieval theme does her well, puts her vocal explorations in a context that really brings out the magic in the music. One of the few CDs I know that can completely transform the feel of a room it's being played in. Wonderful.

Listen to Coltrane's Naima done up with Latin percussion...fantastic from the first notes. Flute, vibes and guitar melded with intense poly-rhythms...this should be a Grammy winner but somehow seems under-publicized. You will not be disappointed!

"God bless you AMT." -- Pitchfork

Brand new full-length album from Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso UFO features the recent addition of female vocalist Kitagawa Hao. Recorded over a period of four months at The Acid Mothers Temple, this is a very clean-sounding and polished AMT. Frontman Kawabata Makoto admitted, only half joking, that this has the "cleanest sound in AMT history!" More controlled than many of their speaker-destroying, fuzz-blasted speed-guru jams, Crystal Rainbow Pyramid is focused on mystic ambient passages leading into Makoto's head-heavy echo-riffs. Crystal Rainbow Pyramid is clearly one of the new classic AMT recordings. Prepare to have your mind blown slowly with evolving heavyweight jams and climactic peaks of exquisite ecstasy. I simply adore Gianluca Grignani and I have every single CD but not this one. I used to own it. The Italian version is far far superior even down to his Curt Cobain screams done in tasteful Italiano! The Italian version is EXQUISITE; I do not know either language.

5 out of 5 stars fine debut album from il signor "Rok Star".......2005-12-19

[This review is for the native-Italian-language version, DESTINAZIONE PARADISO, also available on amazon.com. I've only heard one Spanish language version of a GG song, "Mi historia entre tus dedos", and it sounded good to me, pero no hablo espanol.]
Grignani's debut album has several potential pop classics: "La mia storia tra le dita", "Falco a meta'", "Primo treno per Marte", and the title song (compiled later on both IL GIORNO PERFETTO and SUCCO DI VITA). I'm a fan who believes that he has matured with each album. The other songs here are all entertaining with amusing lyrics and tunes (e.g. "Cammina Bambina" ("Get Real, Baby"). If you find you enjoy other Grignani CDs you may have picked up, I recommend the purchase of DESTINAZIONE, too. N.B.: If you're a student of the Italian language, GG sings his (often beautiful and at times even moving) lyrics very clearly. Here's a teaser:

Primo viaggio su Marte / siamo tutti nervosi / tra poco si parte / c'e' qualcuno che dice / e gli trema la voce / che la terra e' ormai morta, / non si puo' restare / e la gente si accalca / che fa pena a guardare / voglion tutti partire salire...

First voyage to Mars / we're all nervous, we depart soon / someone says (with a trembling voice) that by now Earth is dead - we can't stay / and the people crowd / it's painful to watch / everyone wants to leave, to board...

PS: How many 5-star reviews have I posted for Grignani? Penso che lui mi abbia fatto la sua b***h. I want a free concert ticket!
PSS: In response to those who posted notes (under the Spanish language version, DESTINO PARAISO) of Gianluca's untimely demise by his own hand: GG did NOT off himself. He's alive and well and continues to produce beautiful music. His latest (2005) is one of his very best: IL RE DEL NIENTE. I recommend buying RE even if you prefer him in Spanish; native Spanish speakers often praise the beauty of the Italian language. i find that there is nothing sexier than gianluca's emotional deliverance of his thought-provoking songs, especially "ci vuoi tornare con me". give me gianluca's CD, a glass of wine, and i'm set to go.
