A listen to the "old Hawaii".......2007-07-20

A pleasant compilation of traditional (and a few "modern") Hawaiian songs... the best of which is probably the haunting "Hanalei Moon."

Even though Dennis is gone, Hui 'Ohana lives on!.......2004-07-26

It was a great idea to put a 'Best Of' Hui 'Ohana complilation CD together. Many of the early recordings are on this disc, including my personal favorite, Ku'u Home 'O Kahalu'u.

With Dennis gone now, it was heart warming to listen to the old melodies and think back to when these performances were originally recorded. The harmonies will live on forever, thanks to compilation CD's like this one.

Narciso Yepes is my favorite classical guitarist. I was delighted to hear a couple guitar concertos I had never heard before. Ohana, Bacarisse, and Ruiz-Pipo were great discoveries. Again, Yepes is the BEST. Strongly recommended.

The late Narciso Yepes is perhaps my favorite guitarist- Spanish or otherwse. With each of his recordings there is the sense of a madman, master, and poet at one with his instrument. I recently purchased "Guitarra espagnola" and have found endless enjoyment listening critically and as background while I work. This is the perfect "not background music" background music to play when you have guests. You and your guests will find yourself withdrawing from lively conversations to enjoy a poignant, sweet, or sinister moment with the music. This is a compilation of recordings from the past 20 to 30 years. The compositions span from the 17th to 20th century. The quality of the recordings is very good but at times varied. The availability of the compilation is very limited. Get it while you can! I also recommend Alirio Diaz and John Williams.

I cannot recommend this retrospective of just a small amount of Yepes's work highly enough.

No matter what popular and lay opinions may be about Williams, Bream, Segovia, and others, the greatest classical guitarist of the 20th century was Narciso Yepes. It is a pity and a shame that the fear of the older generation of guitarists and their associates made Yepes a marginal figure.

He was a consummate technician and a knowledgeable interpreter of all musical idioms from the Middle Ages through to the height of the 20th Century avant-garde. His playing was characterized by intelligence, sensibility, clarity, power, majesty, poetry, and a devilish ability to separate and sustain contrapuntal lines.

In this box of 5 CDs you will find the definitive performance of Rodrigo's now famous "Aranjuez" concerto, which, incidentally, was first recorded and made famous by Yepes. There are also 2 CDs with rare concertos by Salvador Bacarisse, Antonio Ruiz-Pipo, and Maurice Ohana.

The other 3 CD's contain generally the best performances of the canon of solo guitar works that you are likely to find. The composers include Sanz, Mudarra, Narvaez, Soler, Sor, Albeniz, Granados, Tarrega, De Falla, Turina, Bacarisse, Rodrigo, Llobet, Pujol, Moreno Torroba, Montsalvatge, Ohana, and Ruiz-Pipo.

Every guitarist and every lover of the instrument should own this set. If it is not available, also refer to a similar box set with the ASIN number B00006L6RN or another B000026ZRL.

In a simple and unpretentious set of songs for voice and slack-key guitar, Dennis Kamakahi shows why the music of Hawaii has such an allure for people around the world. Joined by his son David (ukulele and vocals) on a number of tracks, this guitarist exhibits excellent musicianship, warm personality, and a love of family and the music that comes from it. The set includes original songs in traditional styles, some classic Hawaiian tunes (including a lovely version of Queen Liliuokalani's "Moanalua"), and the almost-required pop or show tune, in this case an interesting instrumental duet of the theme song from the movie "Around the World in 80 Days," a showcase for David Kamakahi's wonderful ukulele style. Dennis's version of the traditional mele "He 'Ai No Kalani" shows off his jaunty country style of picking the guitar, and a tune he picked up from his time with Eddie Kamae's Sons of Hawaii band. Nothing shocking, innovative, or adventurous here, just excellent playing and singing from two fine musicians. That's more than enough, thank you. --Louis Gibson

Brilliant Hawaiian Master.......2007-01-10

I was first introduced to Dennis Kamakahi as he toured with Led Kapana and Cyril Pahinui on the 2006 Hawaiian Slack Key Masters Tour. I was immediately struck by his superb vocals. This album does not disappoint!!
Playing with his son, he showcases his exquisite song writing in his own voice, which is certainly in the same league with Keola Beamer, Kei'eli Reichel and Pahlani Vaughn. In addition he explains the music between songs, giving those not so familar with Hawaiian language, music and culture a basic framework in which to listen. One need not be a fan of Hawaiian music to enjoy this disk; if you are. it is a must-have for your collection.

Keeping the tradition.......2006-07-31

How exciting to be able to pass the love for the old kine music down to your son! Dennis and David both show their musical artistry on this album. There is probably no greater living Hawaiian songwriter than Dennis Kamakahi. His mastery of the poetry is unrivaled. The legacy continues with David, who is able to showcase his ukulele virtuosity on this CD. Their rendition of Ulili E is the best I have ever heard. Too bad, though, that they do not record the stories behind the songs, as well. But make sure you read the liner notes. The "talk story" makes these songs even more exciting. A must have for any lover of ki ho`alu and any Hawaiian music.

My favorite CD.......2001-09-28

I received this CD as a present from my daughter two months ago, fell in love with it, and have listened to it daily since. The wonderfully mellow voices of both Dennis and David and superb slack key guitar and ukele playing just make all daily task so pleasant. I have since listened to several other Hawaiin slack key guitarists, but this remains my favorite. I eagerly await more CD's with this father/son duo.

I own many slack key recordings and this may be my favorite, it has it all. His recording of 'Ulili E is my favorite slack key song and definately the best version of this traditional song ever recorded.

Wonderful island sounds.......2001-05-30

This is an excellent album. Good contemporary Hawaiian sounds, well played and sung. It's a pity that most people think of Don Ho instead Hawaiian Style Band or Iz or Hapa when it comes to the music of Hawai'i.

Great CD.......2000-09-26

This CD is not as great as their first two, but nevertheless has lots of upbeat contemporary songs. It has a lot of nice 'island' music for those who are away from the islands and homesick or if you just want a taste of some contemporary, popular island music.

200 years ago in Hawaii... there were no plantations, no ranches, no missionaries, no visitor industry, no hotels, no radio, no multitracking, no singing (only chanting), no overdubbing, no lyrics to engage the talking head, no record company formulas... no entertainment industry...

There were a few Hawaiian men and women who were the original recipients of a "new" instrument called a guitar. Sitting in the peaceful splendor of their environment, they created a unique art form called ki ho'alu -- Hawaiian slack key guitar. They were inspired by simple, natural wonders... the little crabs skittering to and fro on the beach, the moon shimmering off the deep seas, the mist swirling around the mountains, the honu (sea turtles) riding the giant rolling waves, the soft whispering tradewinds, the ua lani pili (rains from the near heavens), ...

Island of Peace, the newest release by Doug & Sandy McMaster, is ki ho'alu in this real old style. Nothing more, nothing less. Enhanced to include a FREE video, screensaver, photo gallery, and more when you put the CD in your computer. The video is a little taste of the magical sunsets by Hanalei Bay on the mystical island of Kauai.

One of our favorite tracks is the title song, Island of Peace, which was a gift from a baby humpback whale that was born in the middle of Hanalei Bay on February 18, 2002 as we and our sunset slack key 'ohana watched on and serenaded the sun to bed. The name Island of Peace was the gift of a visiting monk.

For this disc - Anfangs (Beginning) - I selected contemporary pieces that are close to me, and that are part of my concert repertoire. As a performer, I play this music not necessarily because it is art, but rather to stay connected with what is happening in today s music world. I cannot ignore the music of our time just because it may not be "beautiful" or easy to understand. This new music represents the ideas and values of our time. These recordings are a very personal affair, as I believe most recordings are. There is so much more behind this music than just what the composers intended. Beyond the music, there is the where and when was it performed? and who performed it? For me, this is the Anfangs - the beginning of the music. These works form a dramatic arc in my mind. For me, they are connected and are presented as such on this record. Finnish guitarist Tuomo Tirronen studied guitar in Turku Music Academy. After studies in Finland, he continued with professor Frank Bungarten in Musikhochschule in Lucerne, Switzwerland. Tuomo Tirronen is active as a solo performer, and has a repertoire that stretches from music of the early Renaissance through many of today s newest and most challenging works for guitar.
