From Dusk To Dawn is a great purchase for anyone. Its achingly beautiful melodies enchant you while the sounds of undisturbed nature gently wash away all the stress of the day.

This is an excellent choice for setting a peaceful, meditative environment.Drifting in and out of pleasant acoustic riffs and swampy sounds of crickets and frogs, this is very tastefully done.-not hokey at all. All my massage clients love this one!

Taking its title from the English translation of Mahler's song cycle "Das Lied Von Der Erde", SONGS OF THE EARTH is a wondrous collection of nature and Earth-related classical pieces meant to celebrate the wonders of this small planet that we inhabit. Conductor John Mauceri leads the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra in seven impressive pieces by seven different composers: Ravel (Dawn, from "Daphnis And Chloe"); Grieg (Morning Mood, from "Peer Gynt"); Carl Nielsen ("Helios Overture"); Debussy (the much-beloved "Prelude To The Afternoon Of A Faun"); Franz Waxman (Dusk from his score to the film "Night Unto Night"); Wagner (Late Night And Transfiguration, from "Tristan And Isolde"); and Schoenberg (Sunrise, from "Gurrelieder"). In a deliberately placed recording, each work follows the time cycle from Dawn through Morning, Noon, Afternoon, Twilight, Night, and at the end another Dawn.

This is not merely another classical compilation CD. Nor is it merely another "pops concert" recording since, except for the Grieg and Debussy, the others are either not nearly as well known or are arranged in ways audiences may never have heard them done before. It is a genuine theme album, of the kind that Mauceri and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra (the second version of the orchestra name that originally thrived at the Bowl during the 1940s, when Leopold Stokowski was its general director) were fond of doing both in the studio and in concert. The Debussy and Grieg pieces are handled with exquisite care, with Louise DiTullio providing the flute solos in "Prelude", but the other works are brilliantly performed as well. The orchestra's concertmaster Bruce Dukov is featured on electric violin in Waxman's "Dusk"; and the Los Angeles Master Chorale is featured on the "Gurrelieder" and "Daphnis And Chloe" excerpts.

A highly recommended recording for people interested in classical thematic albums and, most especially, for those just getting into the flow of the classical genre.

First Rate Light Music.......2004-08-31

Dacades ago on FM radio I heard a medium tempo version of "Would You Like to Take a Walk?" that knocked my socks off. Simply beautiful. It took me this long to find out that it was Robert Farnon's Orchestra that performed that gem! And now, not only do I finally have it, I have also discovered more of Mr. Farnon's wonderful repertoire on these two albums.

This may be considered "Light Music" but it is certainly not boring. There are uptempo romps like "Yes, we have no Bananas" and "Blue Skys" as well as near classical beauties like "Can I Forget You?" and "Down By the River." Farnon takes full advantage of his rather sizeable orchestra which consists of strings, brass, reeds, percussion, rhythm and harp.

The cd is a nice production as well with interesting liner notes about Robert Farnon and the music per se. There are reproductions of the original album covers released both in the UK and U.S. There are also track times and composer listings, but, sadly, no mention of the orchestra members other than specific soloists. Originally the sound quality, even in 1953 and 1954 when these albums were recorded, was excellent. Fifty years has taken some of the edge off of that sound from the master tapes, but it is still very good.

It's easy for me to recommend this cd and I will be forever grateful to Amazon for giving me the resources to finally track down Farnon and his beautiful arrangement and performance of "Would You Like to Take a Walk?"

Ravel and Janacek in an architectural rendering..............2002-03-24

The emerging Avalon Quartet brings mature artistry to an eclectic pairing. Ravel's Impressionistic light and nuanced colors elicits complex, fluid instrumental demands which the ensemble delivers with aplomb. They tackle Janacek's psychological journey with equal attentivness to his emotional and intrumental range. The Avalon's passion and imagination are deserving of critical acclaim here... I must also extend kudos to Jared Sachs for his Cannel Classics supreme engineering. Avalon's Dawn to Dusk is a welcomed addition to string quartet collections.
