Superlative collection.......2006-10-11

A collection of 100 individual arias and ensembles from the EMI catalogue of complete works recorded between 1955 and 2003. It includes selections from operas by Italian, Austrian, German, Russian and French composers. The French composers are especially well represented unlike most such anthologies. And there are several more obscure contributions, such as an aria from Catalani's La Wally. A well-judged balance of musical periods and styles, and the very best singers of the last half of the last century. And remarkably, the whole collection of 6 CDS, over 7 hours of music, is being sold for the cost of only 1 CD !

Great value for the money.......2006-04-23

This is simply the best collection of opera arias that I have seen. It's not 100% in that there are a few well-known arias that are not here, but what is here is simply a treasure. The organization is a bit strange, but there's some logic. For example, Disk 6 is mostly from French operas. A seemingly endless amount of glorious music. Just fabulous. You won't be disappointed.

Great for the money and a good starter on opera...........2006-01-07

This cd is a splendid collection of songs, and the price is unbeatable; I have but a few minor complaints about the overall product. The cd would have been much more enjoyable if they had put the music in some sort of order, rather than jumping around from artist to artist sporatically. My only other complaint would be that they could have chosen some better vocalists to play some of the songs. For example, in CD 6, track 3: Romeo et Juliette, the singer was not nearly as strong and definative as she should have been and I've definately heard in various other versions that were way better than this. This disappointed me greatly. But even with these few small complaints, this collection is still great and the price is amazing. It includes MOST of the famous opera pieces, as well some great songs that are often overlooked such as the beautiful song from Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg (CD 6, track 16) along with others.

I am so impressed by this collection that I must share my joy at getting so many beautiful arias, duets, et al in one collection. It captures many of the great operatic voices in stellar performances spanning the last 50 years. If you are enchanted by beautiful operatic highlights, removed from their operatic storylines, this set is for you. Hours of gorgeous music for practically pennies!

Good survey of Alfred Kraus' work.......2007-08-04

Alfredo Kraus was one of the finer tenors of the latter part of the 20th Century. He was born in 1927. His formal debut was in 1956 and he actually sang into the 1990s, before his death in 1999. This double CD set shows him in a repertoire that runs from Mozart, Bellini, Donizetti to Verdi, Puccini, and Massenet.

A few examples of his singing:

"Verrano a te" (Lucia di Lammermoor): A well rendered duet with the soprano Edita Gruberova. The voices work well off of one another. He sings smoothly, with a distinctive voice. This is a wonderful duet, well sung.

"Un di felice" (La Traviata): His stylish voice works well with this piece. This is an affecting version, as he couples with Renata Scotto (as Violetta). She contributes mightily to the success of this duet--but Kraus also shines.

"Questa o quella" (Rigoletto): Well sung. There are a few unwelcome affectations in this aria (and these recur here and there elsewhere), but it is not so much as to detract from his obvious talents. He captures, vocally, the attitude of the wretched Duke.

"La donna e mobile" (Rigoletto): Another testament to the Duke's wretchedness--and testimony to Kraus' art. This is well done, sung stylishly. The piece ends well with the high note.

"Bella figlia dell'amore" (Rigoletto): One of the great ensemble pieces in opera (along with the sextet from "Lucia," the Bohemians from "La Boheme," the Norns in "Gotterdammerung," etc.). The participants: Kraus, Beverly Sills, Mignon Dunn, and Sherrill Milnes. An exciting performance, well sung by the four.

"Che gelida manina" (La Boheme): A very nice version. Kraus sings this sensitively. His culminating high note is done well.

"O soave fanciulla" (La Boheme): Once more, Kraus partners with Scotto. And the result is splendid indeed. Their voices intertwine nicely. This is a very well done version.

So, where does one end up with this CD? Kraus obviously qualifies as one of the better tenors of his era. This is a terrific introduction to his artistry.

As a boy, I heard so many hyperbolic references to the legendary Enrico Caruso that I chose to purchase a remastered copy of his "Greatest Hits" when I first began to acquire recordings as a young man. Soon after, I discovered Pavarotti and my life was changed by his music. Caruso ended up in the Goodwill Store. I am convinced that in 500 years, should the earth cool again and the Muslim hoards abate, the civilized world will still tell tales of the greatest tenor. I have often found myself grumpy when searching for recordings of Pavarotti because of the inconsistent fidelity of the recordings. That search for the definitive Pavarotti recordings, regarding both content and fidelity, has ended with the release of this extraordinary collection. Worth it's weight in gold, the Puccinni Volume (#5) alone is enough to send someone like me into hyperspace. I am astounded by the beauty and power of these performances. I will always remember the day, not long ago, when a NPR commentator glibly mentioned between the weather and the night's playlist the terrible words, "Luciano Pavarotti has announced that he is retiring from Opera." I felt as if something indescribably beautiful was fading from the world. Of course, beauty in all of its earthly forms is fleeting at best, but these discs contain a reflection of it that will surely bolster any soul.

An Absolute Must-Have for Any Pavarotti Fan.......2004-01-09

...and that certainly goes without saying. My one tiny little problem with it is that his recordings of "Santa Lucia" and "Caruso" are not on this incredible box-set. Even though I have those recordings on other CDs, I still think those are very important pieces to include on this set (assuming that this set of Pavi hits would be the only compilation that that any fan of this phenomenal tenor would have). He is probably my biggest idol, and he deserves to have been one of the biggest opera stars in history.

Every Song is hear, This SET is a must have for every Pavarotti Fan.

The first 3 books of Gesualdo's madrigals don't have the startling chromaticism and the violent rhythmic contrasts of the 5th and 6th books, but they're rich pieces nonetheless and here and there are hints of the over the top imagination of the later works. These performances are characterized by accurate intonation and lovely timbre. This is one of my favorite recordings of Italian madrigals.

Best CD ever!.......2003-09-21

I have to agree with all the above reviews. This is definitely my favorite album and I highly recommend this become a part of your collection as well. All the songs are unique and very expressive... I can't say enough great things about this album and I am always looking forward to hearing their latest songs.

Siete fortissimi!!!!!!

A Taste Of Italy.......2001-01-20

I went to Italy back in 1997. When I came back to Australia I thought there was no way that I could re-claim that atmosphere of walking around in what is one of the most chaotic countries in the world. I was wrong.

Despite the fact that my Italian essentially stops after foods and the old "Ciao Bongiorno" song it is still possible to appreciate this album. The instant I put it on, I was transported back to Rome as chaos reigned everywhere and the Italian looked at it and calmly continued on with their business.

A good deal of the album is taken up by gloriously carefree party songs ("Domani", "Tranqui Funky" and the hilarious "Latin Lover" being the most noticable) but there are an equal number of harder tracks, such as "Non C'e Remedio" and the title track. An interesting track to listen to is the opener "Un Urlo" which sounds almost like an Italian version of "Jump Around".

J-AX has, by this album, developed a marvellous flow which suits the "spaghetti funk" music perfectly. Of note, too, is DJ JAD's work on many of the tracks which is the best I've heard on foreign rap.

A very funny song to listen to (I'd appreciate it even more if I knew Italian more) is "Sono L'MC" in which - as far as I can tell - J-AX describes trying to become an MC in Italy.

This is certainly an album and group that deserves more exposure outside Italy and should be bought at any opportunity. It can be used very well at a party, or just as a CD to have on in your room - there's always the use of it to learn Italian as well.

Italy's answer to "House of Pain".......1999-01-27

I'm an American who was a radio dj in Milan, Italy in 1986. At that time, Italian rap was in its infancy consisting of rhymes that sounded like jump rope jingles, sort of talked to (or against) the beats- bad replica's of a lot of New York City's one-hit-wonder rap artists.

Articolo 31 shows just how much "L'Italiani" have caught up in the rap game and found their own way to express themselves rhythmically, as well as lyrically. Most of the cuts on Articolo 31's "Cosi Com'e" sound distinctly different from one another, which makes it a nice cd to listen to from start to finish- I never get bored with it. I like how they show us their "dancy" side with ""tranqui Funky", and their sense of humor with "Latin Lover." I love how they include some grittier cuts on the album, forcing me to dub the, "Italy's answer to "House of Pain"

I bought this cd in Milan in April, 1997. It is one of my favorites. I listen to it about once a week.

This C.D. like Volume I before it is a very high quality, wonderfully diverse album. The pair compliment eachother beautifully, and stand alone strong. I would recomend it to anyone who already loves Opera, and to any new innitiate. I bought Vol. I and Vol. II on a whim and have not been sorry. The piece by Wagner at the end is worth the purchase price alone for this one.

I stumbled on this set in the Amazon listings quite by accident. I feel obliged to make it clear that I do not own the set, nor have I heard anything from this particular publication. I certainly am familiar with many of the performances included in the set, and I am willing (based on the previous review) to assume that they have been recorded on the eight disks of the set with an acceptable--if not necessarily leading edge--level of competence.

Judging from the contents listed on this review site, this is the underlying structure of the "People's Guide."
--Tracks 1-15 (presumably one disk): arias from the Big-Five Mozart operas.
--Tracks 16-34: arias from bel canto operas.
--Tracks 35-46: arias from middle-period Verdi operas.
--Tracks 47-64: arias and one chorus from Puccini.
--Tracks 65-87: miscellaneous loose ends. (I absolutely guarantee you that Number 71, "Parigi, o cara," is not, repeat not from "La battaglia di Legnano" but from an obscure little piece by Verdi called "La Traviata.")
--Tracks 76-88: arias [sort of] and choruses from Wagner operas (but not from "The Ring.")
--Tracks 89-99: well-known overtures and preludes to operas.

Right off, it can be seen that "The People's Guide 1" begins at the end of the 18th Century and ends early in the 20th. It entirely ignores the better part of two centuries of operatic development before Mozart and composers of the stature of Monteverdi, Handel and Gluck, not to mention Salieri. A couple of French operas sneak in the back door in Italian versions and only Carmen appears in the correct language. German operas are ignored except those written by Mozart and Wagner. Russian operas are entirely shut out. The 20th Century appears only in the works of Puccini, so the likes of Richard Strauss, Berg and Britten are cast into the outer darkness.

On the whole, though, the selection isn't bad. If you really want about nine hours of bleeding hunks from what most people define as the standard operatic repertory, you could do worse than this set. The performances seem to range from the early 1950s to the early 1970s. There are many famous names among the singers and conductors.

But it is not opera. Operas are not just a string of songs and choruses that follow along after an overture. An opera is--or should be--a dramatic whole. Opera was consciously invented at about the beginning of the 17th Century to combine drama, music, dance, costume and set design into a unified whole and display them on stage. Often the best parts of operas are utilitarian but brilliant passages that will never make their way into highlights disks such as these.

This set is hardly expensive at the prices being quoted as I write this. Nevertheless, I advise you to look through the offerings of complete performances. Many of the older ones offer unbelievably good singers in superb performances at low price. That's a better deal than you'll get here.

A chance to enjoy opera........2001-08-12

Mozart, Wagner, Rossini . . . need I say more? Regardless of whether or not you are an avid listener of opera, this cd is a must have. Even if you never had the valuable opportunity to attend an opera, there is no reason why you should not add this cd to your music collection. Not only are some of the world's most beloved operas included (such as the Barber of Seville and Carmen), but thanks to technology, this cd provides a great sound that pretty soon you'll believe that you are in an actually opera house. The professional orchestras that play in this cd help to bring forth much emotion. Don't miss out on this opportunity to own a collection of opera pieces at a reasonable price.
