Customer Reviews:
One of my favorite recordings ever.......2007-06-08
Elly Ameling is in glorious voice, and Demus's instrument here is fortepiano, which suits the music exquisitely. Der Hirt auf dem Felsen alone is worth the price, but all the Schubert and Schumann songs are well chosen. I'm so happy that this 1965 performance is available on CD.
wonderful.......2007-03-21
I also owned this on vinyl and have wonderful memories of this perfect blend of voice, clarinet and piano. Truly haunting melodies and the greatest musical integrity. Can't wait to get this one next month!
Truthful & Sincere Singing.......2006-11-25
Ameling's reading of Schumann and Schubert Lieder is sincere and noble, at times even awe-inspiring. There's always something genuinely beautiful, a sense of respect for music itself, when she sings with her etherial yet warm voice.
The sublimity of "Mein schonster Stern" only makes this CD worth purchasing. Her Schumann recordings are so scarce now that it is joy to find 19 Schumann Lieder both well known and obscure gems on this disc. Accompanied by an original master piano of Schubert's days. Recorded in 1965/67.
Beautiful.......2006-11-11
What a gorgeous voice! It's a true delight to listen to this set.
More than just a pretty voice ..........2006-09-17
It is tempting to dismiss Ameling as a "pretty voice" and reach for Elisabeth Schwarzkopf instead, as a previous reviewer suggests. Ameling's interpretations place a premium on simplicity and directness - two traits that are often undervalued. To my ears, however, Ameling's self-effacing approach is ideally suited to lieder performance. Schwarzkopf's recording with Edwin Fischer on EMI, while admirable in its own way, is too fussy for my tastes. Take, for example, the rendition of "Im Fruehling" by each singer: where others find Schwarzkopf to be intense and dramatic, I find her to be mannered and melodramatic. Ameling's version strikes closer to the heart and shows greater insight and intellect, in my view. Note: on this CD, Ameling's ravishing voice is at its peak.

Mill. Classical review.......2007-05-13
This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.
classical music for the unitiated.......2007-04-01
This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.
Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30
Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.
I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.
It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!
Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]
A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24
I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.
Excellent!.......2007-03-08
A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

A "Regular People" Review.......2007-02-17
In my opinion this is the most solid disc of Lieder I have heard. The music and the performance are great. I would definitely go for this if your new to Lieder and want to get your feet wet. And maybe next you'll want to try Brahms' Deutche Volkslieder, which I think takes a little more effort to get into, but is great none the less.
Epitome of Lieder singing.......2006-07-26
It really amazed me to learn from the booklet that Elisabeth Schwarzkopf was never totally confident in taking on the songs of Schubert, mostly due to the fact that a lot of them are simply based on poems with a man being the character. With her wonderful tone, fastidious attention to detail and the true German spirit, she would have been able to perform them much more extensively. Whatever the case, the 24 songs featured on this disc are a true delight from start to finish. The CD starts with the joyful atmosphere of the songs "Die Vogel" and "Liebhaber in allen Gestalten " which obviously were recorded very early on in Schwarzkopf's career, showcasing her in carefree, simple and amazingly fresh mood. Then comes the core of the CD-the classic recital with Edwin Fischer at the piano. Nothing really needs to be said here. Schwarzkopf shines throughout with beautiful tone, flawless diction. She may be mannered, yes, but she also does justice to the poetry like I never heard from anyone before, of course with the exception of Fischer-Dieskau. Edwin Fischer plays with taste, bringing out all the demanded atmosphere: from the serenity of Im Fruhling to the intensity of Die Junge Nonne. The sound is pretty old but the balance is perfect and both Schwarzkopf and Fischer are caught in a great day. The other items on the disc are recorded later on in Schwarzkopf's career, when her tone has darkened, thinned down a bit but always radiant and the fastidiousness and artistry even more significant; and Gerald Moore and Geoffrey Parsons are delightful pianists. The remaining songs include a high-spirited Die Forelle and Seligkeit, a wonderfully introspective Der Einsame and a moving and gorgeous An mein klavier (although she seems to miss a breath for a tiny fraction of a second at the beginning of the 2nd verse). The final "Erlkonig", one of her most favorite recordings, is a track that will knock you off your seat with its intensity. Parsons's playing is adequately intense, and Schwarzkopf's "mannerisms" which the Schwarzkopf bashers love to hate, are deadly powerful in pointing out all the 4 characters of the demanding lied. Be warned, the cry of "gewalt" by the end of the lied will cause your heart to miss one beat! Sound recording gets better throughout the CD, from acceptable mono of the first 2 songs to the crystal-clear stereo of the final items.
Highly recommended. Masterful singing from the queen of German lieder.
This elevates my mood! .......2005-09-08
Although i do not understand each word it sings, i m just happy to hear it till the last song finishes. I feel content.

Before there were the Three Tenors there was Jussi Björling, the great Swedish tenor who died in 1960 at the age of 49. His bright, sunny tone had a slight, emotion-laden tear in it that conveyed feeling as well as, or more than, any number of sobs and effects that other tenors use. His Carnegie Hall recital of September 24, 1955 has long been available; in addition, this CD features nine never-before released selections from that recital which either did not fit on the original LP or were omitted for some other reason. He can sing at any dynamic level, the voice is always secure, and his taste and musicianship, as always, are impeccable. I doubt we'll ever hear Tosti's Ideale sung more tenderly or "Che gelida manina" sung with such poetic abandon; the newly discovered Grieg, Sibelius, and Sjoberg songs are sung with an opera singer's--rather than a Lieder singer's--style, but it's doubtful anyone will complain. Björling fans should race to hear this; for those who came to opera after his heyday (or during the reign of other tenors), this will be a stunning ear-opener. A must have. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
Magnificent.......2005-09-02
Some years ago I met an elderly gentleman who'd served as a co-pilot on a B-24 bomber during WWII. During a raid on a North German site their aircraft was badly damaged and they were forced to crash-land it in Sweden. The shaken but uninjured crew was picked up by the Swedish authorities and immediately interred (Sweden being a neutral country). They were sent to a dreadful and notorious Swedish internment camp--the largest and lushest hotel in Stockholm--and given something of an expense account. It just happened to be the same hotel where Jussi Bjorling had his digs.
Through a variety of happenings, the vet ended up befriending Bjorling, who he described to me as "one hell of a nice guy" and they became drinking buddies. He and his fellow aviators had front row seats at any and all recitals and apparently became society figures in cultured Stockholm. To my wonder and astonishment, this old Regular Joe fellow, no opera fan before Sweden, told me he was the guy who taught Jussi Bjorling the song "Pistol Packin' Mama." Now wouldn't we all pay good money to have heard him sing that!!
There's nothing more terrific than a great voice attached to a great guy who'd sit and drink with downed aviators and happily learn their favorite pop songs. This disc of music is as wonderful as the guy who recorded it.
"Bjorling".......2005-01-05
In a word - superb. This brings to mind the review of Bjorling's RCA LP "Bjorling in Opera" by Stereo Review's critic George Jellinek, shortly after it's release in 1959, which he ended by saying "highly recommended, especially for other tenors".
Frederick's Understatement........2004-12-22
It was 50 years ago that I met and fell in love with
the accompanist at the voice studio where I studied
for love of singing (i.e., mine was a modest voice).
She in turn introduced me to some of the great singers
then active, or who came through, Chicago. And also, her
own teachers and colleagues, including Dr. Rudolf Ganz and
Frederick Schauwecker. One day, when the topic of melody
came up, Dr Ganz suggested that all piano students should
hear Jussi Bjoerling deliver legato melody. And when Lynn
asked Mr. Shauwecker, who little praised anyone, even a client,
how Jussi did on the trip they were just back from, she was
astonished to hear him grudgingly admit that "Jussi is singing
like an angel. It can't possibly continue at such a level, even
for him." It didn't. As we found out a couple of weeks later
when we heard this recital live, it didn't "continue", it got
better. At the time I found it the greatest listening experience
of my life. Today, 50 years later, it still is. Whatever vocal
records you have by anyone, this is better. There are no equals.
"Like an angel" is one of Frederick's understatements.
Remastering is not perfect.......2004-07-20
This CD is a recording of one Carnegie Hall recital on September 24, 1955. Many composers are represented, including Beethoven, Mozart, Bizet, Grieg and Sibelius to name a few. There is even a Stephen Foster - Jeannie with the Light Brown Hair. The accompanying literature has all the lyrics.
Jussi Bjorling is obvious a tenor in top form, but this recording forty years later omits the higher overtones of his voice. Nevertheless, this is a recording of the highest caliber that does justice to this talented man who died too young.
THE ultimate singing voice.......2004-05-22
This live concert cd contains some of the most fantastic singing ever by a human being and that goes both for the lyric and the dramatic repertoire. Why RCA have denied us this fabulous sound for all these years really beats me. I have long cherished Bjoerlings Troubadour recording with RCA, but compared to the Bjoerling sound on this cd, his Manrico sounds like a light Wiener Sänger. The sound on this cd is simply the most ravishing sound I have ever heard.

The "Clinker" of the bunch.......2006-12-19
Having collected the entire "The Masterworks" series (including the Bach and Mozart Complete Works) this set is the 'clinker' of the bunch. First off... 6 CD's of Lieder 'historic' (pre-historic) recordings. No Overtures, No Orchestral Seranades, No Haydn Variations?? The performances of the Symphonies and the Concertos are shakey and not very well recorded. Brilliant Classics, who has done such a wonderful job with the Hadyn Complete Symphonies (licensed from Nimbus), the Mozart and Bach Complete sets, has stumbled a bit with this release.

This is a wonderful record; it will wring your heart and haunt your dreams. The Piano Sonata in B-flat--Schubert's last and perhaps his greatest--was written in the final year of his life. Its subdued, yearning, wistful inwardness seems to breathe the air of another world. Though the grand opening theme is expansive and resigned, the ominous, rumbling trill in the bass soon disrupts the serenity. You can feel the angel of death hovering nearby, and the anguished slow movement, with its turbulent middle section, seems like a reluctant farewell to life. Andsnes communicates an uncanny identification with Schubert's changing moods. His command of the keyboard is formidable, his variety of touch, color and nuance seems unlimited. His phrasing is clear but not fussy, his liberties always feel just right, his expressiveness is deeply felt but never sentimental. The first movement is dreamy but flowing, the second quite slow but cohesive; the scherzo is very fast, but light, crisp and clear, the finale is also fleet but not rushed. He makes this very long piece feel like a single outpouring of heavenly inspiration. For the songs, Schubert used his friends' poems and, with his usual magic, turned literary dross into musical gold. "Viola" is a whole operatic scene; its 19 verses are divided into three sections, separated--and unified--by the recurrence of the first stanza. "Der Winterabend" is a tender reverie evoking a wintry night's quiet, peaceful solitude, but also its aching loneliness. The third song, composed for an obscure play, is a "melodrama:" the text is spoken while the pianist plays music so exquisitely beautiful as to rank with Schubert's best piano pieces. Bostridge, who has collaborated with Andsnes on stage and three discs for EMI (Schubert sonatas and songs, including Winterreise), sings with great intelligence and expressiveness, but, especially in the soft, held-in passages, he consistently delays his vibrato and puts a swell on every long note. When he lets his voice ring out, he is marvelous. --Edith Eisler
Customer Reviews:
Another success from Andsnes and Bostridge.......2006-07-14
Leif Ove Andsnes and Ian Bostridge have published four CDs together with works of Schubert. Personally I love them all, but this one is my favourite. I think the A-Major piano sonata is undoubtedly Schubert's most beautiful piano work. I've played this one myself a bit, although my playing isn't nearly as good as Andsnes' way of playing it. As always he interpret and express the music at a way I think is the way it's meant to be by the composer himself (of course we can't know for sure).
This is not a bargain I regret. Full score.
I suggest Sviatoslav Richter.......2006-05-13
With nothing but good intentions, I suggest that the recording of this Bb Schubert Sonata by Sviatoslav Richter is unequalled. Other pianists are good; Richter is great.
Richter is, simply put, a genius at the keyboard, and this most memorable Sonata by Schubert allows him to express his mastery of not simply the keyboard, but of the music itself.
I have several of Leif's recordings, and while he is a decent pianist in one sense, I am always left wanting more; sometimes even a bit confused...a feeling that is satiated immediately after swapping Leif's recording out and Richter's in.
The Andsnes/Bostridge Collaboration Continues.......2006-01-06
Of all the Schubert piano sonatas, probably his farewell B flat Sonata is the best known. And while there are many fine recordings of this gorgeous, melancholic, virtuosic work available, this performance by Leif Ove Andsnes ranks among the finest. His approach to the work is Romantic, savoring all of the intricate beauties inherent to the sonata. He breathes with the phrases, articulates the inner voices with clarity but never to the point of distraction from the grand architecture, and at all times he seems in touch with Schubert's magical writing. This is a recording to treasure.
It is also a recording to add to your collection of the inimitable magic of the collaboration of tenor Ian Bostridge with Andsnes at the piano. Here are more lieder, continuing the cycle of Schubert lieder so successful in their 'Winterreise' recording. These two sensitive and very gifted communicators bring Schubert to life as few others can. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, January 06
Power and poetry in Schubert's last piano sonata.......2005-09-16
I took a friend to hear Leif Ove Andsnes play, who was interested because he was a good-looking guy in an Armani suit. Then she heard him play Schubert, and changed her tune. Andsnes manages to tap both the virtuosity that Schubert demands, and the sublime poetic elements as well. Schubert's last major piano work is a dark little number: the ominous low register trill, framed with silence, that keeps interrupting the progress of the otherwise genial theme in the first movement. (And am I the only one who hears an echo of "O Come All Ye Faithful" at the end of the first movement?) Andsnes is, to my ear, one of the most brilliant Schubert interpreters out there. But hey, don't just take my word for it. Last time he played in Chicago, I ran into Mitsuko Uchida in the lobby at intermission, and she couldn't say enough nice things about the Schubert sonata Leif had just played. (I have her recording of this work as well, and while she brings a delicate interiority to her performance, I still prefer Leif's.)
Marvelous Schubert.......2005-07-15
What a wonderful recording. I have the Sonata on repeat these days; it's an unbelievably beautiful piece of music and Andsnes' performance is a little miracle. The effects he achieves on the piano are, over and over again, surprising and delightful. The first two movements are sonorous and dreamy and dark and everything a Schubert lover loves Schubert for. And then, just in time, you're transported out of the gloom in the last two movements to play in the sunshine. Amazing. Then, there are the utterly charming lieder with Ian Bostridge that follow. I love this album.

Schuberts' Songs Without Words - Mischa Maisky.......2006-01-07
This is pure velvet chocolate. What a relaxing and uplifting experience! Such finesse and teamwork between Mischa and his accompanist. This is one I listen to frequently and deeply. If cello is your love this album is for you.
One longs for the words, but the sounds are lovely.......2005-11-27
Maisky does his best to imitate a voice in these cello transcriptions of 14 Schubert lieder. (Some of the most famous--Die Forelle, Nacht und Traum--are mixed in with lesser known songs.) In that regard he is very successful--he knowss how to inflect with his bow the same words and syllables a singer would inflect. And his tone is romantic and tender throughout. Yet at some level this is Schubert as background music, and that's not fair to the composer's genius. Schubert was the greatest master at setting words to music, so let's not deprive him of that.
Another way to hear the beauty of Franz Schubert.......2004-10-30
SCHUBERT: SONGS WITHOUT WORDS is an elegant recital by pianist Daria Hovora and cellist Mischa Maisky that allows us to hear Schubert songs, beautifully rich as they are with the texts as sung by many of our finest singers, here solely for the instrumental line. Somehow the interplay between melody and accompaniment (always an equal partnership in Schubert's hands) is heightened by this experience.
Not that the entire album is appropriated by the cello standing in for a vocalist: the opening work is "Sonata for Arpeggione and Klavier" and is one of the highlights of the CD. But just listen to the performances of 'Standchen', 'An die Musik' and 'Du bist die Ruhe' and hear the extraordinary marriage between the piano and cello, singing as beautifully as any other version. This is one of those CDs that bears keeping out for multiple listenings in the late evening. Grady Harp, October 2004
sing a little song for me.......2004-03-09
Substituting the cello for voice in Schubert's songs may have been an enticing idea, but for me one that fell flat on too many of his nursery rhyme simple songs that would have benefited from a nuanced and inflected voice - and for heaven's sake, in this day and age of advanced editing, production, and mastering, must we put up with the non-musical bow scraping so evident without an obscuring orchestra throughout this recording? The Arpeggione Sonata is great fun...the dancing tunes remind one of Viennese naked drunken frolickers...or maybe not.
wonderful performances, great recording...........2002-08-15
OK, I own a zillion CD's but if I were headed to the provervial desert isle...this would be one to be sure to slip into one of my wallet sleeves.
First off, the music is unbelievably beautiful -- you get a first class performance of the Arpeggione. Maisky's tone just melts.
But then, there's the addition of the Schubert songs - and here's where this album is peerless.
I'd recommend this recording to anyone who loves cello music, Schubert or just frankly is looking for some new repertoire -- a wonderful gift for that classical music friend you don't know what to give.

We remember Rachmaninov today mostly for the music he wrote. But as this set quickly reveals, he was one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, able to play his own music and a great variety of others with tremendous personality and a technique that is still astonishing. There's no point picking highlights from this set, since they are everywhere. But if you've never heard Rachmaninov play Schumann's Carnaval, try starting there for one of the most imaginative recreations of a piece of music ever recorded. The set also includes Rachmaninov's only recordings as a conductor in two of his own major works. --Leslie Gerber

Save some $ money! Get the newer January 2006 reissue set instead........2006-05-17
At the time of this review, whenever you search for a phrase such as "Rachmaninoff Complete", amazon's search engine always lands on this out-of-print recording (ASIN: B000003FB7) . It's also no fun to see that it costs more than a hundred bucks! But if you type "B000A2AD2S" in the search box, you'll see the new reissued set for half the price. It's the exact same 10 CDs. Just the cover art is different.
Unfortunately, this situation is a common pattern with amazon's listing of classical music: when you use your intuition and type in common-sense search phrases for Bach, Mozart, etc, you often get the ultra-expensive out-of-print ships-in-4-weeks items as the default item. It takes a lot of detective work to find the newer reissue recordings. For example, to find the new reissue without knowing the ASIN, I had to enter just "Rachmaninoff" in the search text (deliberately left the word "Complete" out of the search) so it would no longer lock me into this item page that you're looking at and give me a full listing instead. I then sorted the listing by "Original Release Date" and found it on the 2nd page. There's no picture on the new item which doesn't give you any confidence that you found the right one. Don't worry, B000A2AD2S is what you want.
For product research, it's good to have both ASIN product listings because the older out-of-print B000003FB7 has the sound samples (and also all the helpful customer reviews) while the new B000A2AD2S has the better price and availability.
To make things even more confusing, the amazon staff sometimes copies entire customer reviews to the new item which would then make THIS review seem strangely out of place. If that happens and I notice it, I will delete this review for B000003FB7.
(In another strange twist, amazon searches in rock/pop usually points you to the newer cheaper remastered/repackaged/reissued/whatever of a particular recording. I don't know why it works the opposite way in classical music?!?!)
6, or Even 7 Stars!.......2005-06-04
Hofmann hit the nail on the head when he said Rachmaninov had "arms of steel and heart of gold". From this album, we can have a clear picture of Rachmaninov's vison of music, of his musical mind and thoughts and moreover his own playing.
While Kempff's playing would often remind of the protestant church music, Rachmaninov bring to our mind the chanting of the Orthodox church, which is much thicker and darker. On top of that, his playing is orchestral which is so powerful and full colours. Yet, it is nothing like Richter, where often the whole piece is just one phrase.
Here each piece has it's own life and identity each with a focal point. It is water tight compact and yet very much natural and alive, never as hair-raising as Horowitz. But, it is not natural in Arrau's way. It is somewhere in between, closer to Argerich but with more consistency and depth. And like Casals' playing, it keeps our attention from the first note up to its focal point until its very end. But unlike Casals, he touches our hearts. It is very emotional but never to the point of being sentimental-- the performance of his own concertos, for example, can tell you that.
Sure, he did have fingers of steel that helped him to bring out whatever colour or atmostphere as appropriate. And despite that fact that there are some minor alterations on the scores like his Chopin, he is one of the few pianists who could really show you every note on the score counts and, above all, how it counts...
His Chopin may not be as neurotic as Cortot. Nonetheless, he sheds light on the dark and nervous side of Chopin so well: a very throbbing interpretation that is so unique. We also have him accompanying Kreisler on some violin sonatas, something that one could turn to time and again, year after year. What a great chamber musician and accompanist he was...!
The recorded sound of the CDs do vary, and some are more acceptable than the others. But for genuine music lovers, they should be able to get over this very soon: how else would they benefit from one of the greatest legacies of a genuinely great musician!
A must have for Piano and classical music lovers.......2005-04-04
To respond to a review about the sound quality-for those people who have no experience with historical performances i.e cortot-hofmann-etc these discs are for the most part much better recorded. There are the inevitable pops and hisses but if these things disturb you, or you cant get past them, then you shouldnt be listening to this kind of thing anyway. the importance here is in the playing, and the playing is extra ordinary. I you want to buy a disc for the reperatoire then i can think of hundreds of performances that will satisfy, but only people with a true interest to hear and study these pieces will be beyond satisfied. I know that may not sound like a lot of fun, but these discs are fun, great, and for me, almost too good to be true. Again, if sound disturbs you, then you may be listening to the music for the wrong reasons. Take from it the playing, the revelations that Rach provides to his pieces, and how fortunate we are that it sounds as good as it does.
Ah, Rachmaninoff, brilliant star of music, how we adore you.......2003-09-14
The music of Rachmaninoff is beyond words, furthermore, beyond imagination. He was a genius, no doubt, and nobody will ever understand how incredibly lucky we are to be blessed with his compositions. Furthermore, it is truly astonishing to hear Rachmaninoff play his own work. There is nothing so beautiful on this earth and there never will be.
Review from a spoiled modern listener.......2003-07-13
I'll admit that I'm a spoiled modern listener, accustomed to having the bang and hiss edited out of a recording, and it took me a while to warm to these. Rachmaninoff's performances are splendid, but if you can hardly hear them over the cacophony of background noise, what's the use? His performance of his own, often overlooked Concerto No. 4 finally made me sit up and listen, even though I've owned two versions of this piece for a number of years (Ashkenazy & Wild).

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful SHORT disc.......2002-07-07
As always, I wonder why Recording Companies insult buyers by throwing us 44 minute discs - like crumbs to a dog - especially when presenting a wonderful artist in repertoire she does exceptionally well, better in fact than in just about any rival recording. Why not give as the cantata "Der Wein" as well, and at least shove this issue into the low 50's or a chunk of Schoenberg or Zemlinsky, or Mahler, whose music echoes through the best of Berg. As for the performance, I have not heard any of these songs sung with more opulence, beauty of line and tone and a sense of "generosity". Avoid Popp's "7Early songs" like the plague, and even Bonney does not thrill me half as much. Von Otter is wonderful and a great artist, but Norman just has the edge for luxuriant sound and effortless colouration, quite giving the lie to the idea of this music being overly cerebral. Pity the disclength is so ungenerous.
Who's affraid of Alban Berg?.......2000-03-20
The fact that its Jessye Norman performing these songs is not the only reason why I think this is a great record. I think this record gives you a great view on the evolution of Alban Berg as a composer. The three different sets of songs belong to a different period in his life: the early songs are still truely romantic, the "Seven early songs" show a composer searching for new ways of expression and the Altenberg-lieder show him using a totally new and different soundscape. I think Jessye Norman is the perfect singer for these songs, the early 20th century repertoire suits her perfectly (she has made beautiful recordings of works of Arnold Shönberg as well). It's just a pity that these last years she seems to focus on singing Christmas carols and other easy listening music.
Wondrous, as usual for Jessye.......1999-12-29
I am not a fan of this type of music, and in truth have to be in the mood to even sit through it. That is, usually. I have other recordings of these works by other singer, and though they are fine, they never impressed me. When I found the recording with Jessye Norman ( and mostly because I love her voice immeasurably ), I decided to give them another chance. I was not disappointed! Norman's wondrous voice actually gives you the impression you are listening to great music. She gives it a warmth, and an aura that is unbelievable. This music is not great music and will never be in the class of Beethoven or even Verdi or Puccini, nor even Schubert, however, when sung by a truly great voice ( and not the mediocre ones that usually sing it )it does truly sore. If you wish to be introduced to Berg, this is by far the best recording to start with. You may even come to love his music and have the courage to try out some other things he composed.
Tender and lovely.......1999-09-20
Alban Berg and "tender and lovely"? Not the usual association one makes...at least I didn't. Berg writes aching and delicious melodies to his bittersweet text selections and Ms. Norman delivers them memorably. A winner of a CD, and I am sure one that has not gotten its due.
