    5 out of 5 stars Excelent.......2006-08-07

This is an ecxelent collection of the most famous Tangos in orchestal version. The sound is very good also to dance this rithm.

5 out of 5 stars Not Quite 5 Stars but Giving the Benefit of a Doubt.......2006-03-25

Yes, this is romantic, lush, sometimes wildly authentic Tango music for those who favor the orchestral - as opposed to the vocal - component of this ouevre. Most Sud Americanos do not share this attitude, automatically linking a Tango with a song and not an art form. So why not a solid five stars? One reason only: The lack of a bandoneon, the essence of the Tango. It is no surprise that Astor Piazzolla was also a first-class artist of the bandoneon with its whining, moaning and yearning sounds that an accordian can approach but not replicate.

The arrangements are wonderfully inventive yet true to the spirit of the works. The artistry is incredible - this is not a gang of guys meeting in someone's apartment for a little jam session. They are serious musicians who seem to take both the music and its interpretation seriously. Rush out now for this CD and don't forget the equally excellent "Secrets", their other CD.

    5 out of 5 stars Tango that is delicious . . . ........2002-12-10

They say that tango provides you a sense of where you were. For me, "Quintango" brought me back to where I began. The piece I love most is Carlos Gardel's "Por Una Cabeza," known to many as the tango from the movies "Scent of a Woman" and "True Lies." Until I listened to this disk, my favorite rendition was by the ensemble "Tango Project." I still like the Tango Project arrangement, but I like Quintango's version much better. The orchestration is superb, and it is just slightly longer in length.

The second disk I had purchased was the sound track recording of Sally Porter's movie "Tango Lesson." I will not detract from that disk because I really love the collection. However, the Quintango arrangment of Piazzola's "Libertango" is excellent. Another Piazzola favorite is "Oblivion," a selection that tends to be more of a favorite of fantasy tango dancers rather than salon dancers. Some instructors say you can't really dance to "Oblivion" -- it may not be on the play list of your favorite tango DJ, but I can dance to this version.

The play list shows a lot of the traditional favorites of tangueros. This is a comfortable feeling and a pleasant sound. There is a wonderful feeling of interaction with the ensemble that is more characteristic of what you may find in a jazz combo than what you would think of for an ensemble of classically trained musicians. They play off each others strengths to develop a most delightful product. There is something positive to be said about an ensemble led by a tanguera. While we like the vintage tango on this disk, the arrangements of these pieces by Quintango are delicious to my ear.

    5 out of 5 stars America's Greatest Tango Orchestra.......2000-09-17

Is it any wonder that President Clinton chose Quintango to entertain the President of Argentina at a state dinner in the White House? A musician himself, the President didn't have to look any further than this stellar Washington based ensemble.

This quintette of classicly trained musicians is really passionate about the tango as an art form. You can hear it in their playing. They even travel to Buenos Aires on a regular basis to make sure that their music is authentic and current. Their choice of selections is impeccable and will satisfy even the most ardent of Tango lovers. If you love tango, you will love this album.

Even the packaging and art work of this album are superb. Don't pass up this album if you are a tango aficionato. It is a "must buy."

    5 out of 5 stars a priceless gem..........2004-12-23

I have the hobby (for lack of a better word) of picking up a tune and exploring all its different versions. Lately I was exploring the classic bolero "La historia de un amor". I must've found some 50 odd versions of it and was almost wrapping up on it, when I wandered to the Quintango website and chanced upon a clip of a tango-ized version of this song by Quintango. I knew I'd found a rare gem. I must've played the clip some 20-30 times over! Quintango's version of it heavenly, and can instantly trigger a flood of emotions, and I know Ive found a gem. I'm on my way to purchasing all their CDs.

5 out of 5 stars "Secret Places" is a delight........2002-06-04

Recommended for people who like to listen to tango music. This is Washington DC's best-known and most recorded tango ensemble. They have played at the Kennedy Center, the White House, and the Pan American Union, as well as the Argentine Embassy. The ensemble includes 2 violins, double bass, cello, and piano. All musicians have impeccable academic credentials and have performed professionally with regional symphony orchestras.

The music on the disk contains a lot of favorites: "La Cumparsita," "El dia que me querias," "Nueve de Julio," "Taquito militar," "Tus besos fueron mios," and "Caminito." There are only two pieces by Piazzola. I mentioned that because some dancers do not like disks that have a preponderance of pieces by Piazzola. Yes, some people stay away from "tango nuevo." Dancers will recognize the names Carlos Gardel, Gerardo Rodriguez, Mariano Mores, and Juan de Dios Filberto. The arrangements are great, and the presentation is delightful.

    5 out of 5 stars Secret Places.......2000-09-16

This is a most thrilling CD. The music is vibrant and each attack is crisp and in tune. Tango appreciation has taken a huge step forward with QuinTango and anyone that listens to this fine CD connot fail to be converted. I was lucky enough to see this group perform in the Kennedy Center to an overflowing audience and they are as superb live as they are on this CD.

5 out of 5 stars You don't have to tango to love this recording.......2000-09-16

It's lush. It's sensual. It's soothing. When you listen to Quintango (either in person or on one of their CDs) you are transported to the beauty of the tango. As much fun as it is to watch (and I've been told - to dance), it's splendid to hear this group play tango music. This is a must for any lover of tango and its music and even for those who are not familiar with either. Try it, you'll love it.

    Product Description

Recorded live at the Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston, S.C., in June, 2004, this album features the same energy and passion that defined QuinTango's style in their previous three albums. This album marks the debut of QuinTango's pianist, Jeffery Watson. It is dedicated to QuinTango's founding pianist, Bruce Steeg, and Spoleto critic Robert Jones, two men who contributed immeasurably to the group's success during their lifetimes.

5 out of 5 stars A live album that comes alive.......2006-03-30

If you have ever had the pleasure of hearing QuinTango perform live, you know the passion, intensity, and professionalism the group brings to contemporary Tango. QuinTango's newest release, QuinTango Live (en vivo), gives the listener an excellent idea of the passion and precision the group brings to their live performances. Whereas the previous three recordings explored the diversity of tango (from classic dances to original piece and modern interpretations), the live album presents something of a "greatest hits" with an intimacy and excitement that can only come from a live performance. The precision of the live performance speaks to the professionalism of the individual performers. Check out the dynamics in "Corralera," the spoken-word accompaniment by Joan Singer on "El Dia Que Me Quieras," and the violin duets on "Gallo Ciego" for examples of what the group can accomplish outside of the studio. QuinTango Live, like all live albums, suffers with the occasional coughing audience member and the occasional variation in recording levels due to the performer moving away from the mic. However, rather than detracting from the album, these "imperfections" are what make the album shine. QuinTango has proven that they can deliver near-perfect studio albums. QuinTango Live adds another dimension to the growing QuinTango discography - the group stretches and plays with the tunes. Their sound grows ever more "autentico" without losing the studied qualities of their classical music backgrounds. Although most of the tunes have appeared on previous studio albums, QuinTango Live provides an intimacy and passion that will add to, rather than replicate, a collection.
