There's only one word that comes immediately to mind when describing Anberlin's Never Take Friendship Personal release. The word? Amazing. This is one of those truly remarkable releases that is so refreshing, so defining, and so well done, you will feel a need to let every know about it. Much like Switchfoot's The Beautiful Letdown and D.C. Talk's Jesus Freak, Anberlin's second release captures the musical styles of the day but recasts them in a unique and exciting way. Much credit up front should go to producer Aaron Sprinkle, who never lets the music overshadow Steven Christian's emotive alto vocals. Joseph Milligan's guitar work is nothing short of phenomenal and propels such blistering tracks like "Paperthin Hymn," "Runaways," and "Feel Good Drag." Let's not forget the rock-steady rhythm from drummer Nathan Young and bassist Deon Rexroat that continually lays down a concrete foundation. Also worthy of note is the intelligent songwriting that prevails throughout the release, showing that Christian-based bands don't always check their brains at the studio door. Moody at times, exhilarating at others, this is a giant leap forward for a relative newcomer in Christian music. It's also a release worthy of widespread acclaim and a breath of fresh air in a genre that is sadly growing all too predictable. --Michael LyttleCustomer Reviews:
No sophomore letdown at all.......2007-08-05
They start with the title track Never Take Friendship Personal, with a nice rocking beat that your sure not to forget along with some solid playing. Followed up nicely by Paper Thing Hymn pretty good on the 2nd track as well. After that comes Stationary, its interesting how they come up with the song titles for each of their albums. One of the ones i like most on the cd Symphony of Blase, love the title, the song and all else about this track.
Day Late Friend about a friend who hasnt kept in touch with you like they promised. i like the line "is there no pen and paper where you are". Its actually pretty good with people that have for some reason or another not kept contact like they said. Runaways, Time and Confusion, The Feel Good Drag, Audrey, Start the Revolution all play equally well in order on the cd. A mid tempo song or two helps keep NFTP rolling along at a steady clip.
The last and best song on the CD (the others rock as well) just this is the song that i can play over and over again. Along with Symphony of Blase and Dance Dance Christa Paffgen. Its hard to put into words how much this song just flows from beginning to end. I find myself just getting lost all it has to offer. Great lead vocals, guitar, drums and background really help this song.
Overall i give "Never Take Friendship Personal" a 4.75 out of 5. More than close enough to give an even 5 score. Don't miss this cd it is more than a worthwhile collection to Anberlin cds and cd collection overall.
Enjoy!!

Best CD I've ever heard..........2007-02-19
Now that I've conveyed my general musical interests, you have an idea of where the review is coming from. My friend made me listen to yet another band in his car one day and I sighed and said "whatever". About 20 minutes later, I wanted to know the name of the band that played "that song", which happened to be "We Dreamt in Heist" from Anberlin's first CD (Blueprints for the Black Market). I proceeded to check out the entirety of Blueprints that evening and shockingly discovered that a mainstream rock band had taken my musical tastes by storm! Anberlin's sound is so amazing, and for some reason so unique from other rock artists out there these days, and it really hit the spot.
A few weeks later, I got my hand on this CD, Never Take Friendship Personal, and at first I found myself going back to Blueprints for the Black Market. However, a few months later here I am, and I have decided this disc is my favorite not only of Anberlin's, but of any collection of music I have ever heard.
I highly recommend this CD, and in particular Dance, Dance Christa Paffgen. If at first you don't love these songs, listen a couple more times and I guarantee you'll be singing them in the shower. ;)

The recordings Johnny Cash started making for Rick Rubin's American label in 1993 launched a journey through the Great American Songbook--from traditional tunes to alt-rock--that continued until, literally, the end of his life. What wasn't known at the time was that Cash had anticipated the American Recordings concept 20 years earlier. A series of informal private sessions he recorded in 1973 featuring just voice and guitar--with a few numbers added between then and 1982--were left untouched at his House of Cash studio, unearthed only after his death in 2003. These 49 songs, labeled "Personal File," show him exploring 19th-century parlor tunes, Tin Pan Alley pop, gospel, little-known Cash originals, classic and contemporary country, and even a recitation of Robert Service's poem "The Cremation of Sam McGee." On many, his spoken introductions reveal personal ties to a given number. Cash reprises early country fare like Jimmie Rodgers's "My Mother Was a Lady" and "The Letter Edged in Black." He also revisits later country classics like the Louvin Brothers' "When I Stop Dreaming," close friend Johnny Horton's hit "When It's Springtime in Alaska (It's Forty Below)," John Prine's "Paradise," and stepdaughter Carlene Carter's "It Takes One to Know Me." The second disc is a virtual hymnbook, blending traditional gospel and A.P. Carter tunes with a sacred composition by Rodney Crowell and Cash gospel originals. For those enchanted by the illness-ravaged soulfulness of Cash's later American recordings, hearing him in his prime is not only breathtaking--it underscores the depth of his still-remarkable musical vision. --Rich KienzleAlbum Description
Deep within the House of Cash, Johnny Cash's recording studio, office suite, and museum in Hendersonville, Tennessee, behind the studio's control room, was a small vault-like space in which many of his most prized possessions were stored. A collection of rare firearms dating back to the 18th Century, some personal effects of Jimmie Rodgers, artwork and letters from fans all over the world and much more was carefully arranged and locked away for safekeeping. Then there were the tapes. Hundreds of them. Demos from songwriters, album masters, multi-tracks of the ABC television series, and some boxes marked simply "Personal File." These are Johnny's most intimate sessions, recorded mostly in 1973 and then subsequently at his leisure. Just a lone voice and an acoustic guitar, singing songs and telling stories about them. A concept that has since come to be thought of as revelatory but, as is evident in this stunning new set, is something Johnny Cash had been doing all alongif only for his personal file. This 2-CD collection features 49 previously unreleased recordings.Customer Reviews:

On her second full-length album, Lindsay Lohan tries to leave her Disney image behind for good. And what better way to do it than by starting off with the stark "Confessions of a Broken Heart (Daughter to Father)," in which the singer wrestles with her stormy relationship with her felonious father? Lohan Sr. also is the object of the tortured "My Innocence" (as in, Dad, you took it away.) But the best tracks here are the ones on which Lohan Jr. spares us the angsty therapy and delivers tuneful pop-rock. Sure, the kind of rousing mega-chorus used on "Black Hole" has already been heard--to greater effect--in Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone," but it's still nifty. Elsewhere, "A Little More Personal" begins with Lohan talking about how talking at the start of a song is "rad," but then it turns into a very Cars-like tune--and it's hard to think of a catchier band than the Cars. No wonder it all sounds so impressively slick: For this transitional album, Lohan has surrounded herself with a team of pros--Kara DioGuardi (who's also written for Lohan rivals Ashlee Simpson and Hilary Duff, and coauthored 9 of the 12 songs here), power-popster Butch Walker, and former Evanescence guitarist Ben Moody. The first two also put their producing stamp on a cover of Cheap Trick's "I Want You to Want Me" that's even more upbeat than the original, while Moody applied his tech skills on the other cover, Stevie Nicks' "Edge of Seventeen." Moody particularly shines on "Fastlane," however, a super-catchy number that's one of four for which Lohan gets a songwriting credit. Has she grown up? Maybe not entirely yet, but Lohan is showing the promise of an honorable mainstream career. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:

Poor Lindsay Lohan...
She's been enabled practically all her life to produce terrible movies, music, posters, and personal actions. Unless you, the consumer, enjoy having a reverse peristaltic reaction to this horrible album, then by all means waste your money and buy it. Emergency Rooms should stock this album for use when a patient must evacuate their bowels do to poisoning.
I suggest that if you need to listen to the pathetic groans and moans of an adolescent alcoholic and drug addict, buy stuff from the Olsen Twins; that way you'll get a two-for-one deal...

Mathis was among the singers who, in the '60s and '70s, churned out an album every few months--often made up largely of the same recent chart hits his peers (Andy Williams, Jerry Vale) were covering. Despite the presence of "Feelings," however, this four-CD box is low on chaff and high on the wispy romanticism of hits such as "Chances Are," "Misty," and "It's Not for Me to Say." --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

A Gorgeous Effort.......2005-01-28
This album is gorgeous. It consists of Nancy Wilson, now a senior citizen, dueting with numerous musicians, principally jazz musicians. But the concept of the album is quite different than Sinatra's, Bennett's, or Brother Ray's career-end albums of duets with various singers. Here, except for two singers (Kenny Lattimore and Ivan Lins) the musicians are instrumentalists; and the guest artists really are accompanying Ms. Wilson. The whole album has the feel of a glass of dubonnet by candlelight, at the end of a very good day. In particular, "Minds of their Own", "Little Green Apples", "Why Did I Choose You", and "You'll See" are just drop-dead gorgeous.
So, why do I not quite agree with The New Yorker? Sadly, as in the case of Tony Bennett and Jimmy Scott, Ms. Wilson in her golden years has lost the tightness in her voice which governs vibrato. She still has fabulous breath control, and can power a loud note; but when she's singing at midrange in a mezzo voice, her vibrato goes wide all over the place and misses the center of the note. It's noticeable throughout.
So when I say that this is a Gorgeous Effort, I mean that literally: this album is gorgeous; and it--unlike her seminal albums from 40 years ago with Cannonball Adderly and George Shearing--is an effort.
5 stars nevertheless. RC
Boss Lady.......2005-01-04
"Day In, Day Out" is the only up-tempo tune on the album and Nancy naturally kicks butt on it. But the control she exhibits on the ballads is no less impressive. No one but she could do justice these days to Gordon Jenkins' "Goodbye." With that uncanny sense of pitch that is hers alone (she must think exclusively in terms of micro-tonality), she requires no more than a phrase to take us from a plaintive lament to a sense of comforting reassurance.
As for "Blame It On My Youth," she's probably the first singer since Sinatra to get the song's tempo (it's usually taken way too slow) along with its sense of self-mocking irony right. And she risks the high note at the end, hanging on despite a trace of waver that would not have been there 5-10 years ago.
While the guests include a number of venerable all-stars--ranging from the comparatively "youthful" Gary Burton to those ageless wonders, George Shearing and Toots Thielemans, Nancy doesn't give them an inch. This is her session, and her supportive musicians, no less than we the listeners, are privileged to be along for the ride.

Like many other senior bluesmen, Delbert McClinton is getting back to basics: Nothing Personal, his first album for New West, is the raw, stripped-down sort of material that sounds best when you know it comes from experience. It is this sense of things seen and done that pervades every track, and which prevents songs like "When Rita Leaves" and "Don't Leave Home Without It" from lapsing into sentimentality. The more emotional, personal numbers--the album's title notwithstanding, this is a highly personal album--are balanced with high-energy material, though even these songs, such as "Livin' It Down," have a serious thing or two to say. McClinton also neatly avoids several clichés. Take, for instance, "Nothing Lasts Forever," which has, as a theme, the necessity of living life to the fullest without burning yourself out. One might expect such a song to be an uptempo rocker. Instead, it moves along at an easy, swinging pace, the musical personification of following a path of moderation. Nothing Personal is full of little touches and techniques like this, moving out of the realm of merely good, and into the ranks of art. --Genevieve WilliamsAlbum Description

I Love Lust.......2007-06-23
Some DJs think they know house music, and then there are those who actually do........2007-06-14
The album "Lust, Art & Soul" is kind of a joint venture between Louie Vega and artist/photographer Jonas Larsson ("Off The Record") in which music and graphic art are fused and play off each other in an artistic image. "Lust recognizes that graphic art and music full of soul can feed off each other, satisfying the eye and the mind."
Even though the CD case is lacking a little in the department of photographs (let alone erotic ones), the music is sexy and erotic enough to fulfill Larsson's theme through sound. I think that this work hits its target and accomplishes what was trying to be done and conveyed.
While some tracks are very housey or have a Latin vibe to them, others sound very retro electric 80's like. But I am not complaining at all, on the contrary I am just pointing out the diversity that can be found from song to song. Thumbs up to Louie for compiling a great album of sexy beats!

This masterpiece is, without a doubt, the best CD Sage has given us, and definetly one of my personal top 10's. But if you're looking for songs about ca$h and crime, where curse words are used to fill out the blanks and women are constantly referred to as 'hoes' or 'bitches', don't buy this.
Lyrical Abstraction at its finest..........2006-04-19
Extreme fluctuations and temperature changes..........2006-03-19
You will have to listen to some songs multiple times just to hear some incredible wordplay lines like "If you ever need to paint with razorblades and need a canvas use my skin," from Inherited Scars or to understand the layed on intracicies of a song like "Runaways."
Obviously there are no songs necessary to skip on here, but some stand out more than others. Some of my favorite tracks are: Crack Pipes, Personal Journalist, Inherited Scars, Broken Wings, Smoke and Mirrors, Eviction Notice, and Runaways.
If there is anything this CD is missing it's lack of collaborations, which isn't unusual for Sage or for his type of hip-hop-however I like the work he's done in the past with artists like Sixtoo, Buck 65, Slug, and Brother Ali (Doomage). This CD is very replayable, and although not the best from Sage darn close.
Sage converted me to gangsterism.......2006-02-02
I use to despise rap/hip hop, as if it were some mainstream poison my educated ears could not handle. Now I love it, all thanks to Sage.
This album displays Sage's poetic talent at its best. He's a deep, thoughtful man. His other stuff is good, but not as spectacular as Personal Journals. Sage will always be my homie.
