The band that Charles Mingus, the doyen of jazz's mercurial polymaths, pulled together for his early-1964 European tour was phenomenaland here they are playing 130 minutes worth of live music no one's ever heard. Pianist Jaki Byard, alto saxophonist/flutist/bass clarinetist Eric Dolphy, tenor saxophonist Clifford Jordan, trumpeter Johnny Coles, and longtime drummer Dannie Richmond came together for the Mingus tour knowing that Dolphy would be staying in Europe after their gigshe died tragically just 12 weeks after this gig. And Coles would come perilously close to death himself with a stomach ulcer within a month of the band's Cornell date, forcing him off the tour. So the music here is particularly special and musically resplendent. There is considerable overlap with the The Great Concert of Charles Mingus, but that 2-CD set is sans the ailing Coles, who fattens the sound here: playing beautifully as "Johnny O'Coles" on the unlikely "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling." But Eric Dolphy, his every breath is poetry: from his palpitating bass clarinet on the pugnacious "Fables of Faubus" to the tipsy, whirling flute he plays on "Jitterbug Waltz," a tune he loved playing. The sound here is less crisp than The Great Concert, thick in the middle and ill-defined when it comes to Richmond's drums, leaving the group's interplay like an ear-magnet. "Take the 'A' Train" pays soulful, blossoming homage to Billy Strayhorn even as you can hear the band tightening their grip collectively, learning to fly as a unit. Unheard music of this caliber demands a listen, and here the rewards are bountiful. --Andrew BartlettCustomer Reviews:
A great introduction to Mingus.......2007-07-25
What a concert those lucky students were given:
"ATFW You": Jaki Byard's fleet, witty parade of Art Tatumisms and Fats Wallerisms.
"Sophisticated Lady": for bass. Mingus never stopped paying tribute to Duke Ellington.
"Fables of Faubus": A Weillian send-up of Orval Faubus, segregationist governor of Arkansas. The lyrics here are, alas, inaudible. (A sample: "Two, four, six, eight, they brainwash and teach you hate.") A very lengthy "Fables," dipping into various streams of musical Americana along the way. Here, as elsewhere, Mingus and Richmond are the most inventive bass-and-drums pairing in jazz, changing tempos and textures and thereby pushing soloists to dig deeper: the rhythm section as personal trainer.
"Orange Was the Color Of Her Dress, Then Blue Silk": One of Mingus's most beautiful compositions, with overtones of Ellington, "Blues in the Night," and "Body and Soul."
"Take the 'A' Train": I think that it's here that everything rises to a very high level of energy. As Clifford Jordan begins his second chorus, Mingus calls to Johnny Coles and Eric Dolphy: "Join in," and the band takes off. Jordan is the great surprise on this performance and on the rest of the recording, playing with greater intensity and freedom than on the European tour recordings (or at least the ones that I've heard). And Coles, who missed much of the European tour with a stomach ulcer, is brilliant here and elsewhere. I'm only now realizing that he was an influence on Lester Bowie, one of my favorite trumpeters.
"Meditations": like "Orange," a composition in markedly different sections. Particularly powerful solos from Byard and Dolphy (bass clarinet).
"So Long Eric": Twelve-bar blues. Mingus plants the endpin of his bass in the floor, and not for the first time: "Well, we got several holes now." The tempo here is slower than on other recordings of this tune. Mingus calls to Johnny Coles: "Come on, Johnny." He calls to Jaki Byard: "By yourself," and bass and drums drop out. No problem: Byard turns into Art Tatum and Erroll Garner. It's Clifford Jordan's turn to solo: "I know you swing," says Mingus. And before Dannie Richmond's solo: "Go!"
Two encores follow, the first featuring "the only Irishman in the band," "Johnny O'Coles." (Note the concert date.) And finally, a giddy, slightly wobbly "Jitterbug Waltz," the elegant Fats Waller melody that Eric Dolphy loved to play.
For a newcomer to Mingus' music, Cornell 1964 is a perfect start: three major Mingus compositions ("Fables," "Orange," "Meditations"), some blues, some strong evidence of Mingus' reverence for his musical ancestors, and a charming novelty, all played by what many listeners regard as Mingus' greatest band.

It's the rare greatest-hits album that takes on a life of its own. Generally, best-of collections are superceded by updated retrospectives. Hot Rocks is one of the rare exceptions to the rule. Originally released in 1972, it instantly became the Stones intro of choice, elbowing aside Big Hits, High Tide and Green Grass and Through the Past Darkly. Why? It happened to hit the racks when Mick and company were at their creative peak. The 21 tracks found here represent seven years of dizzying growth. From "Time is on My Side" through "Satisfaction" and "Let's Spend the Night Together," on to Sticky Fingers's "Brown Sugar" and "Wild Horses," Hot Rocks never lets up. The likes of Sucking in the '70s and Jump Back come and go, but this Stones overview will not be moved. --Steven StolderAlbum Description

Sounds better than ever.......2007-07-29
Although there's not one mediocre track here, my favorites include the bluesy Time Is On My Side, Heart Of Stone, Wild Horses and Ruby Tuesday (covered by Melanie Safka among others), the raucous rock of Satisfaction, Get Off My Cloud, Street Fighting Man and Brown Sugar, with songs of social comment (Mother's Little Helper, 19th Nervous Breakdown), and beautiful ballads: As Tears Go By (covered by inter alia Marianne Faithfull), Play With Fire and Paint It Black.
The Stones must be the ultimate rock band, more influential than the Beatles in their 4 decades plus consistency and their exploration of the wilder side of life. This is an absolute masterpiece. If an alien came down and asked me to recommend some quality rock music, this album will top my list. It deserves 7 stars!

HOT ROCKS 1964-1971 IS THE BEGINNING'S AND MAKING'S OF A ROCK N' ROLL PHENOMENAL LEGACY........2007-06-24
PLEASE NOTE: There has been a concern that I found extremely important to stress to all of you. It has been brought to my attention by some of my friends as well as some of my fellow readers and reviewers that the 2002 release is really not recorded in the DSD remastered encoding process. After doing my own research and conducting my own personal study, I find this fact to be true. I purchased two different "HOT ROCKS 1964-1971" on a 2-CD set bearing and stating the DSD Remastered logo and packaged in a Digipak while the other is packaged in a jewel case. Looking at the discs itself, the two discs packed in the jewel case are not on gold discs while the two discs that are packaged in the Digipak are gold discs. Listening to both sets, there was a difference and improvement in the sound quality of the DSD Remastered on the two gold discs packaged in the Digipak. There was no improvement on the other two discs. Personally, in my opinion, the very first 1985 CD release sounds better than the other two CD re-releases ever did. I just thought that I would clear this up and help in making you the consumers more aware of what you are purchasing.
What can I possibly say about THE ROLLING STONES that hasn't already been said? THE ROLLING STONES will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for composing and recording Rock's second all-time greatest anthems ever. THE STONES would also be known the world over for inventing the Rock n' Roll lifestyle thus labeling them "the bad boys of Rock." When ROLLING STONES legendary frontman and Rock God Mick Jagger met up with his old childhood chum, guitarist Keith Richards, their true friendship and bond would be special which would last up to this very day. However, when Jagger and Richards met up and joined forces with the original and genuine prince of darkness himself, the late great ROLLING STONES founder, leader and guitarist Brian Jones, Brian Jones' replacement, guitarist Mick Taylor, bassist Bill Wyman, drummer Charlie Watts and the late quitely known pianist, Ian "Stu" Stewart, THE ROLLING STONES would be born resulting in modifying the mixture of Blues, Jazz and Rock n' Roll together thus giving their sound a new rich and pure quality that the British could truly call their own. THE STONES have contributed and accomplished so much in Rock n' Roll that they don't have anything left to prove.
THE STONES legendary Rock anthems speak for themselves. With the exception of ELVIS and THE BEATLES, THE ROLLING STONES have so many great songs put together in many greatest hits compilations, that many music lovers would feel and think that it is truly unfair that no other band around in this world could stand up to them or match them. When it comes to THE STONES' true Rockers in this compilation album, you have great anthems defining the band's persona beginning on DISC ONE such as the greatest riff in Rock n' Roll history, the blistering "Satisfaction," the mild and soothing song which unfolds into a Rocker grabber, "Under My Thumb," the merciless Rocker "Get Off Of My Cloud," the incredible sounding Rocker "19th Nervous Breakdown," the breakthrough Rocker "Paint It Black" and the explosive Rocker with a message, "Lets Spend The Night Together.
DISC TWO takes right where DISC ONE left off and begins with the forever ROLLING STONES legendary trademark Rock anthem, "Jumpin' Jack Flash," the electrifying Rocker "Street Fighting Man," the daring and tempting Rocker of all Rockers, "Sympathy For The Devil," the Rock n' Roll anthem that would have honky tonk bars screaming and craving for more, "Honky Tonk Women," the groundbreaking Rocker "Gimme Shelter," the kick a*s hard Rocker performed live, "Midnight Rambler" and THE STONES' rewarding experience's with black women, "Brown Sugar."
THE STONES also showed a more mellower and romantic side of the band thus exposing a sensitive persona. DISC ONE would deliver legendary songs such as THE STONES trademark Rock anthem "Time Is On My Side," the beautifully slow and romantic "As Tears Go By" and the beautifully slow and wonderfully atmospheric sounding "Ruby Tuesday."
DISC TWO would take right where DISC ONE left off and deliver two more great slow Rock anthems such as the legendary gospel according to THE ROLLING STONES preached THE STONES' way, "You Can't Always Get What You Want" and the beautifully slow and smooth acoustic anthem "Wild Horses."
Listening to the "HOT ROCKS 1964-1971" compilation album, this collection is by far, one of the Top 5 greatest collections ever assembled by anybody. This is a great album for everybody of all ages to enjoy. This treasure gem is priceless and will live on forever for as long as music still exists. You can do all of your album purchases either on Amazon com or at your nearest local orders Books and Music store.
In closing, THE ROLLING STONES have been on Rock's ultimate pedestal on and off for many years now taking where THE BEATLES left off. However, THE STONES have also had their fair share of tragedies and tribulations to contend with such as the untimely deaths of both Brian Jones in 1969 and Ian "Stu" Stewart in 1985. Despite THE STONES fatalities, THE ROLLING STONES have persevered and continue to move forward in representing Rock n' Roll as being its only premiere act thus resulting in delivering the highest grossing tours of all time up to this very day. THE STONES have already received the highest ultimate honor possible by being inducted as members of the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame in 1988. THE ROLLING STONES have forever left more than their fair shares of their many mark's and place's in Rock n Roll history. And because of that my fellow Rock n' Rollers, THE ROLLING STONES will NEVER be forgotten or denied even if they tried. I, for one, have seen every single STONES tour since 1981 and will continue to see every tour till THE STONES are no more. So here's to you Mick, Keith, the late great Brian, Mick T., Bill, Charlie and the late great Stu. Thanks for the great memories and moments with many more still to come. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say mnore? Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have truly enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also deeply hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. LONG LIVE THE ROLLING STONES! R.I.P. Lewis Brian Hopkin-Jones A.K.A. Brian Jones, Born 28 February 1942, Died officially on 3 July 1969 at age 27. Also R.I.P. Ian "Stu" Stewart, Born 18 July 1938, Died 12 December 1985 at age 47. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.
Rolling Stones Hot Rocks SACD.......2007-06-13
On the first disc, it is obvious that the early days of stereo engineering meant separating everything into left and right, but the clarity of SACD really shines through.***Note** Just because it's SACD doesn't mean it's 5.1 surround. I was especially impressed with Ruby Tuesday. I finally can hear that the distortion in the left speaker is actually an over-mike'd cello and not (as I thought for years) some funky bass line.
The second CD really stood out with some great tunes, especially Honky Tonk Women and Midnight Rambler. I tend to prefer when songs are mixed as if I where listening to the band live. That is, I like the lead singer in the middle and drums behind the lead singer. Guitars, bass and backing vocals should be on either side. I was really disappointed with Gimme Shelter because this mix seemed to cram everything towards the center. I don't know if this was the original production or just this cd. The rest of the cd is great. Now if they can just re-engineer the Who's Who's Better, Who's Best on SACD, I'll be in Heaven. ***Another note*** This review may be nullified by the fact that, as my children have pointed out, I'm old, and as such, I can afford a lot better speakers than I could when I was young.

My Fair Lady is--deservedly--one of the most famous musicals of all time. Its popular 1964 film version, directed by George Cukor, has ensured that for most people Audrey Hepburn is Eliza Doolittle, while Broadway-heads swear by Julie Andrews's stage performance, immortalized on the 1956 cast album. Of course, for the purposes of a CD review it's more accurate to compare the performances of Andrews and Marni Nixon, who sang the songs lip-synched by Hepburn in the movie. While Andrews usually comes out on top (especially on "I Could Have Danced All Night"), Nixon is no slouch (after all, she also dubbed Natalie Wood in West Side Story and Deborah Kerr in The King & I). Rex Harrison, of course, does his own vocals, but then he doesn't so much sing his songs as talk them. While Nixon and Harrison are tops, the truth is that Lerner and Loewe's songs are so good as to endure almost anybody's interpretation: "Wouldn't It Be Loverly," "With a Little Bit of Luck," "On the Street Where You Live," "Get Me to the Church on Time," and so on--not many shows can boast as many classics. The movie version's real bonus is Andre Previn's swellegant orchestration. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:

SONGS
all of the songs from the stage show are here, which gives this soundtrack a wonderfully full feeling. the orchestra feels rich and lush on all the tracks, plus some purely instrumental tracks that really add life and fill out the soundtrack nicely. because most of the broadway cast is here, the songs all sound great too.
SONGS 4 out of 5
PERFORMERS
rex harrison, stanley holloway, and wilfred hyde-white all reprise their broadway roles and make their songs just as witty and clever as ever. they all sound just as great and add a wonderful broadway-feel to the album. bill shirley dubbs the part of freddy here, and since i fealt that his songs were fairly bland his presence isn't particularly noticable. the real difference is in the form of audrey hepburn vs julie andrews.
actually its more marni nixon (who dubbed for hepburn) vs julie andrews. marni nixon is a great singer, but the only problem here is that she should have been allowed to just sing the part. songs like "wouldn't it be loverly" and "just you wait" make it painfully obveous that two women are performing the part. songs like "i could've danced all night", "show me", and "without you" are great just because nixon is allowed to just sing the damn role.
PERFORMERS 4 out of 5
fans of musicals and this show will still appreciate this soundtrack, since even at its weakest, this soundtrack is still impressive. however, light fans will want to pass this over for the original broadway cast album, since evn if marni nixon had been allowed to perform the whole soundtrack, julie andrews is still more impressive.

Heaven knows, the Scotsman born Donovan Leitch was ripe for ridicule, even when he was hitting the charts with regularity. He was the ultimate flower child, and his airier pronouncements made cynics want to tighten up those love beads around his neck. Listening to Troubadour, however, it's striking how versatile, melodic, and agreeable most of his material sounds decades after "Mellow Yellow" has faded into a jaundiced yellow. Clearly under the sway of Bob Dylan early on in his career, Donovan nevertheless was capable of directing his reverence into something as enchanting as "Catch the Wind." Amping up as the '60s progressed, he assembled a series of psychedelic-pop classics, including "Season of the Witch," the "Hey Jude"-like sing-along "Atlantis," and the uncharacteristically driving "Hurdy Gurdy Man" (the latter features three-quarters of what was to become Led Zeppelin providing stellar support). This two-disc anthology may be more Donovan than some desire, but the booklet, seven previously unreleased tracks, and expansive perspective it provides makes it a more-than-worthy overview for those who take their paisley folk-rock with a beatific smile. --Steven StolderAlbum Description

I am convinced that those who speak in negative terms about Donovan have only heard his "radio-friendly hits" of the sixties. There is so much more to discover and appreciate about this gifted artist, the likes the world will never see again. Donovan is a phenomenon. The deeper you dig, the greater the rewards. His songs are timeless. His entire song catalog compares favorably to The Beatles, who always recognized his creative talents. For me, Donovan will always be "The Fab One". Talented beyond his years, he was (and always will be) VERY SPECIAL. So, yes, I would recommend this two-disc collection. However, I would also ask that you NOT stop here. There is so much more for you to find and enjoy along the way.
The "Poor Cow" didn't have an opportunity to hear this!.......2007-07-26
Troubadour: The Definitive Collection 1964-1976 packs a tremendous punch with 44 tunes covering the folk, psychedelic, and esoteric periods. Excluding one glaring omission "Fat Angel", (The song would become legendary for Donovan's friends the Jefferson Airplane) this is a wonderful introduction to his music.
The tracks on first glance will remove any apprehension if a newcomer wants to take the plunge. For those that are only familiar with his hits and radio songs they will recognize 12 tunes immediately and at the very least will possess them in excellent quality.
What often happens when you are exposed to Donovan the entire scope of his work engulfs your interest and not only those that were played on the radio. "Codine" from the folk period is an example. The tune penned by Buffy Saint-Marie is exceptional here with crystal sound and Donovan's voice sounding emphatic as he strums the chords. "Museum" magically transports you to the psychedelic era with its vibrant sounds and catchy lyrics. "Super Lungs" has a terrific construction. Donovan's lyrics and a bit of the garage sounds of Americana make for a solid combination. "Cosmic Wheels" seems haunting in its arrangement. There is something captivating about the song.
As for the timeless tunes, they provide candy to the kid in the store. Endless treats of Donovan's creativity. The marvelous "Catch The Wind", "Universal Soldier", "Colours", and "Sunshine Superman" follow each other on the first CD. "Season Of The Witch" may take center stage. The tune has been universally applauded (Please see the Super Session album). "Wear Your Love Like Heaven" with the lyrics that resonate brilliance, is timeless. "Hurdy Gurdy Man" has found its way into every avenue of rock and roll. Progressive guitar-player Steve Hillage has done a breathtaking version. Deep Purple in the early days covered "Lalena." If you are old enough to remember the glory days of progressive radio, "Atlantis" is still every bit as stunning as the day it left the recording studio to go on the record store shelves. People tell stories, Donovan creates them.
After you've feasted on the material you can "Try for the Sun: The Journey of Donovan." That will give you the missing "Fat Angel" and numerous other tracks from the past.
Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton

Fiddler on the Roof is one of Broadway's great classics. Based on the tales of Sholem Aleichem, the musical tells the humorous and heartbreaking story of the milkman Tevye as he tries to maintain the simplicities of his traditional life even as his daughters grow up and Russia heads toward revolution. Many of Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick's songs have become touchstones of popular culture, including "Tradition," "If I Were a Rich Man," and "Sunrise, Sunset." As Tevye, Zero Mostel leads--and at times dominates--the original 1964 Broadway cast, displaying irrepressible swagger and bluster. A young Julia Migenes plays his middle daughter, Hodel, while those who only know Bert Convy as a game-show host will be surprised by his pleasant voice as her suitor. The CD includes two previously unreleased songs but no lyrics. --David HoriuchiCustomer Reviews:
The original first time way..........2007-05-09
This is simply THE classic recording of a classic musical. I like the intimacy of the pit orchestra over the inflated version on the soundtrack (as soundtracks almost always are).
If I were a rich man, this is still the recording I would own.

One Of A Kind.......2006-07-28
Zero Mostel was one of those larger than life personalities the likes of whom we don't have anymore. Mostel, Merman, Channing, Bert Lahr...they didn't so much create a role as embody it with their personalities, but they were so huge, the result would be thrilling. Tevye was tailor made for Mostel, loud, comic and ultimately endearing. The kind of role he was a master at adapting himself too.
This recording captures all of that beautifully. The entire cast is wonderful. (Bea Arthur as Yente!!) Though some great actors replaced Mostel on Boadway, Herschel Bernardi, Harry Goz, most recently Alfred Molina, etc. and they created different and more realistic portrayals, it was Mostels signiture role and it's a gem.
A Timeless Classic.......2006-07-25
Great!!! .......2006-06-17
P.S. Let us pray the rerelease this album with the missings songs.

While the Yardbirds graduated three of the greatest guitarists in rock history--Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page--during their 1963-68 existence, the group's best work came during Beck's '65-'66 tenure, which produced nearly all their hit singles and virtually everything found here. (Notable exception: their debut hit, "For Your Love," which Clapton was barely audible on anyway.) From the cat scratch fever of "I'm A Man" to the guitar-as-weapon solo in "Mister, You're a Better Man Than I," Beck rewrote the lead guitar textbook, and on one of the few songs recorded when he and Page were in the band together--"Happenings Ten Years Time Ago"--they foreshadowed the sound of '70s rock. --Billy AltmanCustomer Reviews:

So, Cool.......2006-08-18
This music is gritty and raw and because the sound production wasn't really great on this particular album, it sounds a lot darker and moodier than maybe it's supposed to be. I'm not a musician and I have no idea about the technical aspects of music, but having been raised by a musician, I know in my soul how things should sound.
If you're looking to improve your music collection you really can't go wrong with this little gem. I know a lot of people gave it four stars and I'm not trying to disuade you from reading their reviews, but I really think (and feel) that if you want something loud, boisterous and completely cool, this CD is waiting for you.
Peace...

I love it when I see contemporary commercials come up with songs from these great early bands, and listening to this album shows us just how important the Yardbirds were in their own right, not just as the launching pad for the careers of Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Paige.
This is an essential album for any survey of rock roots!

Album Description
Produced by the legendary Johnny Rivers himself, the 36-song, two-CD set Secret Agent Man: The Ultimate Johnny Rivers Anthology 1964-2006 is the most comprehensive collection of his music ever released. The anthology features 19 of his chart hits, including 15 hard-to-find tracks released on his own label. This set also features two brand-new recordings.Johnny Rivers vaulted to worldwide fame during the height of Beatlemania, when he released a series of albums recorded at the world-famous Whisky A Go-Go, all featuring hard-charging versions of rock Â'nÂ' roll standards. In the late Â'60s, he changed direction with the self-penned #1 hit, Â"Poor Side Of Town,Â" a soulful ballad that he soon followed up with another hit in a similar vein, Â"Summer Rain.Â" In the Â'70s he returned to his rockinÂ' roots and over the next 30 years released album after album of vibrant rock Â'nÂ' roll. Secret Agent Man is the definitive collection from this legendary artist.

You forget just how many hit records Johnny Rivers had until you have them all on a cd like this. His music is very much in the feel good mode and this disc has seldom been out of my player since it arrived. If you are a Johnny Rivers fan or simply like good music this cd is highly recommended.
