The Best of Emma

Editorial Reviews

About the Artist
Emma was born into a family steeped in service to the monarchy. She was mischievous at times, but the old-time virtues of graciousness, hard work, formal education and the ability to speak perfect English were instilled in her at an early age.

Emma first sang publicly as a 5-year old in a school program. She was soon singing professionally, won numerous talent contests after that, and became a local radio star. She also performed in the live shows presented between movies at the Princess and Hawaii theatres, and at the E.K. Fernandez circus in A'ala Park.

Emma attended Kamehameha, studied piano at Punahou, and graduated from Roosevelt. She received a scholarship to study opera, but eventually decided she didn't want to be limited to singing only one style of music. Opera's loss was Hawai'i's gain.

Prior commitments forced Emma to decline an invitation from Andre Kostalanitz to join the Metropolitan Opera, but she sang with the Honolulu Symphony and the Atlanta Symphony, and toured internationally.

Emma has been heard worldwide on "Hawaii Calls" and seen on network television with Arthur Godfrey and Mike Douglas. Her acting credits include stock company productions of "Showboat", "West Side Story", "The King and I" and "Flower Drum Song". Work on "Hawaii Five-O" put her worldwide on television as well. 5 out of 5 stars Fine reissue of a classic set.......2006-05-24

Think about the stupidest, most formulaic Hollywood movies you can think of: cheesy action pictures, fluffy, unfunny comedies, big but stiff epics. Now imagine that one of the greatest living composers was working in Hollywood, turning out astonishing, hauntingly beautiful and stirring musical scores for these throwaway movies. That's what you get with this set: music Henry Purcell composed for some two dozen often utterly forgettable plays (trust me--I've read a number of them!) Occasionally, when he teams up with a playwright worthy of his stature, such as John Dryden, Aphra Behn, or William Congreve, the results are even better, but for the most part you can enjoy the music here without knowing anything about the original plays.

This set originally appeared as separate LPs in the 70s and 80s, and has been long out of print. That's a pity, since Purcell spent a good deal of his short professional life in the theatre, either writing the incidental music contained on these CDs, or the music for his larger works, the semi-operas (King Arthur, The Fairy Queen, and the like). Almost all of these works are enjoyable gems; certainly, they represent a pinnacle of English 17th century music. Purcell had a genius for spinning musical gold out of the most leaden lyrics (check out his Odes and Welcome Songs on Hyperion if you don't believe me), and he does the same with the song texts in these plays.

Hogwood and the AAM offer clean, listenable performances, and the sound on these old analog discs has been cleaned up and brightened--although they were pretty good, even in the late 70s. As with most Hogwood, emotional extremes are kept to a minimum, so the "otherworldly" nature of late 17th century music, so often emphasised in more recent Baroque performances, doesn't come across here. It would be interesting to see what a group like The King's Consort would do with this music, but this set fills the major gap in the Purcell canon quite nicely.

My only beef with the reissue, as with many reissues, is that the liner notes are rather thin for a 6-cd set--the lyrics to the songs, for example, are especially missed. Still, it's a worthwhile set, and a must for fans of Purcell, English Baroque music, or anyone who just wants to experience a taste of the last days of the Restoration stage.

4 out of 5 stars "Not Forgetting Details of Her ... Grace and Charm".......2005-10-29

After retirement from the steel business, Dave (with his wife, Virginia) spent each winter at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Honolulu, a pleasant escape from the chilly weather of central Ohio. I remember having breakfast with him at the Royal's Surf Room some years ago, where we were discussing local music changes during the 1980s. "It's not like it used to be" -- he said, as his eyes filled with tears -- "they're not like Emma" (although she was still active with special performances). He continued a monologue for some time about Emma - remembering few of her songs, but not forgetting details of her appearance, grace and charm. Emma made a favorable and lasting impression on generations of Mainland tourists who loyally attended her performances at the Halekulani or Royal Hawaiian, and bought her records, as Dave certainly did.

"The Best of Emma" is divided into three sections - much like her live performances. The first group of songs is her established favorites - mostly hapa haole - and the second group is traditional Hawaiian songs, sung mostly in the native language. She finishes with international songs from Japan, China, the Philippines, and Korea (music of the Islands' early settlers) - all sandwiched between her opener, Charles King's "The Hawaiian Wedding Song" (Ke Kali Nei Au) and the closer, Kui Lee's "I'll Remember You." I particularly enjoy "Kamehameha Waltz," "I'll Weave A Lei Of Stars For You," "Tutu," and "Chamarita," as well as the opener and closer - but, everything that Emma sings has become one of her classics.

5 out of 5 stars Nostalgic Wonderment.......2005-08-02

Having taught school on Oahu 1970-75, I "grew up" with Emma, her music, and her husband's constant reference to her as "Golden Throat." Her music, after all these years, still brings tears to my eyes, and the memory of all that was at that time, what could have been, and never was. 'Life happens' to us all.

I had the great good fortune to see Emma in person when she was performing at an oceanside restaurant on Waikiki beach. Her pure voice and presentation of Hawaiian music of all types has stayed with me since the 1970's. I have owned the tape of this album since than and never tire listening to it.

Mahalo Emma for you selections . A mix of the well known standards and not so well known folk music.

Sit back and listen - if you enjoy Hawaiian music I think you will love this one.

3 out of 5 stars Very close to greatness, tainted by inconsistent audio quality.......2006-01-07

As an opera fan of the late 18th century early 19th century I was really looking forward to purchasing these three box sets due to their rare content and attention to an obscure period in opera history (Post-Mozart, pre-Rossini). They don't disappoint in content and they diversity of the material; there's a healthy mix of ensembles and solo pieces (with a finale on the third CD) to keep everyone happy.

Historical value is really what presents itself boldly here because you get to experience the missing links of bel canto that unite the composers of the late 18th century with those of the early 19th. You begin to understand the musical climate leading to Rossini and Donizetti which really stresses the point that all artists don't exist in some kind of artistic bubble where their creative genius alone is responsible for what they achieve.

Special mention goes to a composer I had never heard of before this recording, a young man named Manfroce. Opera Rara offers a recording on the first CD of this collection with one of his quartets from his second and last opera Ecuba. The literature in the included booklet says that he passed away at the age of 22 just after completing this opera. It also suggested that he could have been a worthy rival of Rossini if he had lived and I completely agree with that assessment. Don't expect greatness from his quartet but do expect the seeds of greatness as is the case with most "great" opera composers before they hit their maturity.

Last but not least, the reason I gave this box set 3 stars: What could have been an incredible achievement for Opera Rara was tainted by, at times, poor recording. During any kind of volume intense moment like a stretta or cabaletta, or any kind of crescendo for that matter there is scratchy distortion. It's worse in some numbers than in others but present in most of the concerted pieces (during those moments of volume intensity, NOT the WHOLE number) and even a few of the air's and duet's. It's less tolerable on headset but not as offensive on other sound systems. It seems like an easy fix so I don't understand why Opera Rara didn't remedy this in post-production.

    5 out of 5 stars Stupendous.......1999-11-08

I have come to expect that any release from Opera Rara recordings will be intruiging at the very least, and truly marvelous at best. This set is a real example of the latter. Any lover of bel canto opera cannot do without this set, and even if you are not a devotee of the bel canto period, I urge you to hear this recording. There are many gems here, not least several selections from Donizetti and Meyerbeer's earliest Italian operas, as well as items from the unjustly neglected Mayr and Pacini, as well as a lovely concert aria from Carl Maria von Weber. Some items look back to the elegant classical line of Mozart and Haydn, while others preface the rise of the decorated florid cantilena made popular by Rossini. There are only two items which I would label as somewhat banal (one a duet by Manuel Garcia, famous tenor and father Pauline Viardot and Maria Malibran), but the rest is enchanting and reminds us what a fertile period this was for Italian opera. Everything is beautifully sung by a group of excellent singers, including Yvonne Kenny, Della Jones, Chris Merritt and Alistair Miles. A delightful set, well worth the price.
