5 out of 5 stars stone cold classic.......2006-03-20

this album is a watershed event of brazilian pop music. to put it bluntly, there's brazilian music before this album, and then there's brazilian music after it. the only other album I can think of that presents such a radical shift in the direction brazilian pop would take is the first Tropicalia record, the one with songs from Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Tom Ze, Os Mutantes, etc. Like that music, Chico Science and Nacao Zumbi create a perfect synthesis of all the different musical influences present at the time - maracatu, funk, rock, hip-hop, heavy metal, and electronic music later on. These guys redefined what brazilian music could sound like, paving the way for everything from DJ Dolores to Bebel Gilberto, as well as inspiring Sepultura to expand their sound into what became the album "Roots". The songs are all great, percussion driven funk and metal with Chico Science's unique delivery - a mix of hip-hop and the more traditional embolada, while the lyrics capture the excitement and agony of being young and poor in a city like Recife and the discrepancies of being surrounded by cultural richness and crippling poverty, and it still sounds fresh even more than 10 years later. It's impossible to overstate how important this album is, and any fan of intelligent rock or hip-hop should do themselves the favor of owning it.

5 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking Sound.......2001-06-15

This is CSNZ's first album, after years on the road defining a unique musical personality, which mixtures hip-hop, hardcore guitars and strong drumbeats. It also helped support a cultural movement, which gained ground in the 90's throughout Brazil, giving room for bands such as "Mundo Livre SA", "Cascabulho", and others. This album was independently launched in Brazil, until it became much of an alternative success to be ignored by the big record companies. CSNZ's second album - Afrociberdelia - leads to a more hardcore and electronic music. Both are great records, with amazing rhythms. The road was already paved when Chico Science died in a car accident, before they could get the international recognition they deserved. Too bad for the rest of us.

5 out of 5 stars Rhythm-driven coolness........2000-04-30

This cd combines drums with more electronic sounding beats, but it never dissolves into the boring monotony of techno music (my biases are showing here). Instead this cd sounds like a fusion of more traditional Afro-Brazilian beats with a more raw, modern sound. I just wish I understood Portuguese to know what he is saying.

4 out of 5 stars Won't you take me to mangue town?.......2006-03-29

Okay I won't pretend to know anything about mangue music, and by the fact that my local CD store had filed this under 'African' music means I'm probably not alone. Nacao Zumbi (from Brazil, by the way) have been around for quite some time, and this effort of theirs after the untimely passing away of Chico Science is an enjoyable and eclectic selection of music. My favourite is the heavy 'Meu Maracatu Pesa Uma Tonelada', which is just too short and must be played very loud to truly enjoy.. Blunt of Judah is also a grinding anthem for the album. Ogan Di Bele is a straight out reggae song, and all the other songs are somewhere in between. Not all the songs work, but there is enough on the CD and enough variation that there's probably something in there that will appeal to most listeners. A couple of the songs are just plain bizarre. Interestingly, a couple of the songs are in English, which doesn't seem to add anything to the music, in fact they would have been better off sticking to Portugese, my opinion only. Overall, a few excellent tracks, a few interesting ones and a couple I can live without, but an interesting introduction to the world of mangue music.

5 out of 5 stars this is only a taste.......2000-08-15

While this is a great cd on its own, make sure to get Nacao Zumbi's work w/ the (late) great Chico Science. Science was pretty much the creator of this whole movement, but sadly he died in 97, and this cd is a homage to him. This album is definetely burdened by the fact that everyone was still getting over his death when it was made. To get a real feel for their music, you should buy "Da Lama ao Caos," "Afrociberdelia" (which for some stupid reason isn't available right now), or "Radio S.amb.a." (their latest effort, which is also amazing).

I guess to put the album in perspective for you "world music" fans, this band is like Lenine or Carlinhos Brown with a pair of testicles. The impact of the drums from that area are complimented by heavy guitar riffs, a funky bass line, and a unique way of singing which at times is like embolada (or rap). The lyrics are also bleaker and trippier, some times both at once.

Basically, if you liked what Lenine, Otto, Gilberto Gil (in Quanta), and just about every Brazilian musician has done lately, check this band out, because they literally got the whole thing started.

5 out of 5 stars more minds blown due to cszn cd.......2000-05-09

I have to clarify a bit on the sound. A lot of the remixes are reminiscent of the work that Mario Caldato and Nishita did with the Beastie Boys on "Ill Communication". Stuff like "flute loop" and "Ricky's theme". Mad Professor is as refreshingly whacked as usual on their remix. Apollo 9 - I don't know what to compare them to, but it's groovy and spacy. This CD has more of a groovable beat than what Chico Science did on the RED HOT & RIO compilation ( P.S. I love what PM Dawn did with Flora Purim and Airto on RED HOT & RIO - as well as Stereo Lab and Herbie Mann)

5 out of 5 stars It's mind-blowing........2000-04-26

This is a 2CD set. The first CD is half studio work and half live recording. Jorge Ben appears on the first song, which rocks. "Nos Quintais do Mundo (Mucuna)" is particularly fresh. The live stuff was recorded in Recife and it rocks. The second CD contains some mind-blowing remixes of CSNZ by David Byrne (Rios Pontes e Overdrives), DJ Soul Slinger, Apollo 9, Mario Caldato, DZCutz, Fila Brazilia, Mad Professor, BiD, Death of a Rockstar and Arto Lindsay. Anyone who liked what these people did on the RED HOT & RIO compilation will find their mind equally blown.

5 out of 5 stars Doesn't get better than this.......2006-12-23

Chico Science is inexplicable, a review can't do it justice... that good.

5 out of 5 stars Unique and unforgettable.......2006-10-10

When Chico Science left the world, an entire generation trembled. He was an alchemist in the best sense of the word and an original innovator, able to amalgamate the best elements of quite distinct sources; he revealed new worlds and possibilities, exposing states through music that no-one else could yet feel. His image to me was since the beginning, and still is, the image of a powerful light hurricane. In sound and picture, we are reminded now of what a unique coloring he brought to sight, as Nacao Zumbi goes on with renewed vitalities and amazing new songs.

I still mourn his death back in 97 as many others do: as one mourns the death of a close friend, and as one mourns all geniuses not only at an early age but at any age. His buddy Fred 04 summed up a few years later the feeling of grief that made its way through many: `the equation does not close: one day, someone will have to admit publicly that in that distant February in the twentieth century, there was an unforgivable failure in the clockwork of chaos. Something happened not as foreseen and, for the disgrace of the cosmos, the wrong guy ended up taken' ([...]). Still, as one meditates the ways of life and death now that ten years have slipped, one feels not as sad about Chico's departure as glad and inspired about his figure. There is nothing in his apparently brief thirty-something years that makes them different from one hundred years. He actually lived several hundred `years', nay uncountable eons and kalpas of experiences.

So thank you, Chico, for all the great music; for showing us so many new things that we could not see by ourselves, for doing what you do and for being what you are - what you will always be. Attention, [...] reader: Afrociberdelia is perhaps the most original rock album of the entire decade - in the world. And attention, Brazilian fans: does any one remember the wonderful 1997 special "Ensaio" at TV Cultura with his interview and songs? Someone should have brought back that stuff and made it available already, it is a precious document that can't be missed.

5 out of 5 stars Sciência Perfeita.......2006-06-08

To write about Afrociberdelia is a fool thing to do. In fact, you have to hear to understand Chico's visionary brazilian music mind. A must have!

Saudade deste arteiro...

5 out of 5 stars Pioneers of the "Manguebeat" style.......2003-09-21

This guys have managed to grasp the feeling of some Brazilian traditional rhythms (like samba, for instance) and combine them with electronic - TripHop-esque beats and Catchy guitar/bass riffs. Everything makes perfect sense in the end. I highly recommend this since it?s one of the most authentic bands of the last decade. Just give it a try, it's absolutely fascinating.

2 out of 5 stars Chico science is good.......2002-05-22

it is good but only 2 of the songs appealed to me. the rest were just endless drum beats and rambling in portugeuse. its a shame chico science died, as he most likely couldve produced more good music such as crianca de domingo and manguetown but one of his members went to soulfly the other brazilian band. i amnt sure if he's still there. we miss u chico.

Brazil has always embraced music mix-it-up movements. There was samba at the dawn of the 20th century, Tropicalismo in the 1960s, and mangue beat in the 1990s. Each movement owes its predecessors lots, and each reaches aggressively across borders to earn its definition. Take Nacao Zumbi. This Perhambuco sextet throws a mélange of elements into their mix: batucada rhythmic undergirding, laconic Portuguese vocals that cross stylistic continents (hip hop here, rock-meets-samba there), and an instrumental palette mingling electronics, fuzzed guitars, and big-beat drums. When their original leader, Chico Science, died in 1997, the band pressed ahead, finding a sonic identity that deserves massive recognition on a world stage. And now the laid-back, polyglot urban world music rocks and bumps with the best, begging that ultimate venue question: When will the music community be big enough to welcome Nacao Zumbi to the show? --Andrew Bartlett

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars their best yet (since 97).......2006-04-12

it's pretty much impossible to think of Nacao Zumbi without thinking of Chico Science's untimely death (almost 10 years ago...), and I've always had the feeling the band feels the same way. Their past 2 albums have had their strong points, but I always felt that they left a little room for improvement - meaning Chico's abscense was an ever-present element of their music.

This album is a different story. The band plays with a confidence not heard since the days of Chico Science, with every track presenting their usual sense of experimentation but without their sound ever losing focus. The lyrics and vocals (mostly by Jorge du Peixe) are strong throughout, Lucio Maia's guitar is as creative and unique as ever, and the production is at the highest it has ever been. Their past albums always had a song or two that didn't quite work, but here they manage to mix all their interests - funk, surf guitar, hip-hop, heavy metal, dub, electronic music, maracatu, and everything else under the sun - yet nothing ever sounds out of place. Drum programming in one track, dubbed out grooves in another, even a baseline that sounds like it came out of a Portishead song, and the characteristic stacatto rap of Jorge du Peixe over some ferocious percussion, all fit perfectly into an esthetic that manages to include everything these guys like without ever sounding like it's a different band. With this album Jorge Du Peixe and co. finally cement their own place in the music world, managing to push Chico Science's project ahead without living under his shadow.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS GREAT.......2002-04-27

I also loved the track from Brazil 2mil a remix of Amor De Muito from Afrociberdelia. I was personally surprised that Nação Zumbi released another without Chico Science. It was a great shame when I found out weeks ago that Chico had died in 1997.

Still...this album is brilliant. If you like tracks on Chico or Nação's previous albums then you will surely love this. This really is a piece of brazillian magic that I can only describe as perfect.

2 out of 5 stars fan of Gilberto Gil.......2001-07-11

I wasn't that acquainted with Nacao Zumbi except for a song or two off the Brasil 2Mil Cd. But if you like nice vocals and harmonies, chord progressions, you might be disappointed with this, as I was. Almost every song has lyrics shouted more than sung, in a rap/hip-hop-like style, but with almost no melody or background chords...lots of percussion, but it didn't have that intoxicating brazilian sound, or even the creative transformation of that sound like on Brasil 2Mil. I'm sure there are tons of other fans of brazilian music who would say i'm a traditionalist, so i don't mean to offend anyone, but just want to warn prospective buyers that if you are thinking typical or even modern brazilian music, don't buy this cd!

5 out of 5 stars Chico Science is smiling in heaven.......2001-01-20

Chico Science and Nacao Zumbi, Tool, NIN The Fragile, the Pretenders before heroin took it's toll, and Henry Rollins, Liar Man, when he's having a good day. Some people just rock. Afrociberdelia is truly one of the best albums ever. And you know what? Radio S.AMB.A is in the same class. These are just a few of my favorite things.

5 out of 5 stars A SLICE OF PURE BRAZILIAN UNADULTERATED FUNK.......2000-09-27

Nacao Zumbi hails from the Northeastern state of Brazil, Recife. Led by musical rebel Chico Science, the band challenged the standard definition of Brazilian music with a radical mix of Nordestina forms such as Maracatu and Baiao and "foreign" styles like punk rock, heavy metal, dub, funk, drum-and-bass and hip-hop. Their fans called this eclectic brew Mangue Beat (Portuguese for mangrove).

Their two albums, Da Lama ao Caos and Afrociberdelia received critical acclaim from the press as well as fans David Byrne, Arto Lindsay and Oasis. These accolades brought Chico Science and Nacao Zumbi very close to international recognition. Then disaster struck: in 1997 Chico was killed in a car accident.

It has taken three years but Nacao Zumbi is back with a new album, Radio S.amb.a. On this recording, they take on the most Brazilian musical form, Samba. This recording kicks off with the percussion driven first track, Do Mote Do Doutor Charles Zambohead /Azouque, which prepares the listener for the delights to come. They keep the intensity up on Arrancando As Tripas (ripping the guts out) by doing just what the title implies: tearing the guts out of this progressive samba workout. All through the album you hear their Brazilian roots as well as the influences of their American musical heroes, which makes for a very unadulterated mix. This is a great comeback from a very original band whose leader is missed, but who do not miss a step in this Brazilian party of groovy sounds for the mind as well as the feet. Listen to it and enjoy one of the funkiest hard rock bands in the world today!
