Sometimes it's O.K.--even important--to put aside your reluctance to embrace artists who make teenage girls scream. It happened in 2006, when Justin Timberlake scraped the sludge off pop and left something shiny behind, and it's happening again in 2007 with Maroon 5. It Won't Be Soon Before Long, the L.A. band's sophomore studio disc, rode in on a crest of hype and crumpled expectations--fan reports had it that Adam Levine & Co. scrapped their signature pop-soul sound for something harder and darker. Not so. Shades of Prince, Hall & Oates, and Sting still color the Maroon sound (check out the spectacularly fizzy "Little of Your Time," as well as the first single, "Makes Me Wonder," a song catchier than fire), but they're made ever fainter here by the clamping down of five guys on what is essentially the most distinctive pop sound to emerge from a single band since the Bee Gees squealed into the mid-'70s. It Won't Be Soon squares hip-hop sensibilities ("Wake Up Call") with rock ones ("If I Never See Your Face Again") and stormy moods ("Can't Stop") with bittersweet ballads ("Better That We Break"). It's a disc destined to defy detractors and go on to greatness, elevating the credibility of teenage girls for years to come. --Tammy La GorceAmazon.com
Global neo-soul rock superstars Maroon 5 are back with their much-anticipated sophomore album, It Won't Be Soon Before Long. The follow-up to the 10x platinum, Grammy-winning Songs About Jane will be "sexier and stronger," according to frontman Adam Levine, who looked to '80s icons such as Prince, Michael Jackson, and Talking Heads for inspiration. Recorded at home in Los Angeles with producers Mike Elizondo (Fiona Apple, Eminem), Mark "Spike" Stent (Bjork, Keane, Gwen Stefani), Mark Endert (Madonna, Fiona Apple), and Eric Valentine (Queens of the Stone Age, Nickel Creek), the album promises to be a louder take on the pop sounds of their first effort. "It's definitely aggressive, upbeat and pounding," says Levine.

Michael Bublé's assured debut and the tireless year of globe-trotting touring he spent promoting it elevated the 20-something Vancouver native into the first rank of pop crooner revivalists. His sophomore studio follow-up largely turns on the same formula that helped make his considerable vocal prowess so attractive to mainstream audiences, mixing the nigh flawless, if expected Sinatra-channeling ("I've Got You Under My Skin") with more playful and inviting renditions of pop standards like the Gershwin's "A Foggy Day in London Town," "Feeling Good," "Try A Little Tenderness" and Cole Porter's "I've Got You Under My Skin." But it's the eclectic mix of more contemporary material the singer seasons them with -- apt tribute to Bublé hero Bobby Darin -- that keeps him walking the narrow tightrope between artistic intrigue (a blues-tinged vamp of Holland-Dozier-Holland's "How Sweet It Is," Leon Russell's lovely "Song For You," with a guest turn by Chris Botti) and the kitsch-laden abyss ("Quando, Quando, Quando"'s Euro-centric duet with Nelly Furtado, a ring-a-ding-fling with the Beatles' "Can't Buy Me Love" that echoes fellow Canadian crooner/rival Matt Dusk's more successful flirtation with Lennon-McCartney). Arranger/producer Tommy LiPuma offers Bublé a welcome swinging jazz showcase on "The More I See of You," a bracing respite from the rest of producer David Foster's slick, if typically bloodless MOR production. -- Jerry McCulley [Note: A special edition including two bonus tracks--"Dream a Little Dream" and "Mack the Knife"--is also available.]

Canadian singer Leslie Feist has served as a guest vocalist for Norwegian folkies Kings of Convenience, Toronto power-pop troupe Broken Social Scene, and - under the frightening moniker "Bitch Lap-Lap" - the hairy female rapper Peaches. But her unruly resume hardly prepares you for the emotionally rich, softy sensual music on her major label debut. Moving from tortured torch songs such as "Lonely Lonely" to pulsating originals like "Mushaboom," it also contains stunning remakes of Ron Sexsmith's "Secret Heart" and the Bee Gees' "Inside and Out," tunes Feist not only makes her own but effectively uses to dissect her romantic desolation. "Don't you wish we could forget that kiss?" she smolders on the title track. Not in this lifetime. --Aidin VaziriCustomer Reviews:

Feist is something so different that I know they will be talking about them years from now, so don't just take my word for it, take a chance and get this album! One of the highly acclaimed releases of 2005, Feist is a showcase of musical talent and it is a shame more people are yet aware of them.

Delicately Beautiful.......2007-06-12
Refreshing.
This '05 debut album for Feist is crisp, clear, and melodious. Right from the moment "Gatekeeper" grabs your attention you're hooked, and glad to be so. It's hard to place Feist into any one category of music. She makes me think of a possible Norah Jones wrapped in a modern shell of jazzy, loungy, and slightly Indie influences. Like nothing you've ever heard, certainly not in the last few years. Her more recent album, The Reminder, is capturing most of the attention of listeners right now and rightfully so, but this work is not to be forgotten. For a debut solo album, Let It Die seems to lack no maturity, and to think that it was recorded in a mere week amid her many international tours of '05! These songs show no hint of being mindlessly crammed onto a record ready for the shelves. In fact, it shows no haste at all. Simply the most relaxing music, but not to the point that it's short on pop, albeit in a very subtle way.
"Mushaboom" picks up the pace followed by worthy-of-flagship-status "Let It Die". All of the next three tracks are gold when you arrive at the strange tale of "When I Was a Young Girl" to which there is nothing I can compare it to except maybe Norah Jones' "Sinkin' Soon". "Secret Heart" is a fun little inquiring kind of tune with nice subtle vocals. Now we come to the place that the critics really rave about here. Feist's remake of one of my favorite Bee Gees songs "Inside and Out" is killer. The Bee Gees did such an original good job on it that its tough to say this one's better, but its close. Alot jazzier to boot. After you finish jivin' out, you arrive at unexpected "Tout Doucement". Feist's surrounding influences shine out in this jaunty little tune, so jaunty that you feel like you're strolling down a sunny avenue in Paris one morning on your way to a little cafe. Afterall, it was recorded in Paris. This charming tune will tell you that. Last we have "Now At Last", suitable but certainly not least. Of all the songs on this album it seems that this one above all others was made for Feist. Simple, delicate, and just really nice.
You simply must check out this one of a kind CD, certainly one of the best of '05. Enjoy

More of a happy-go-lucky artist in his younger days, Tim McGraw here sounds as if he carries the weight of the world on his shoulders. After the comparatively lighthearted, irresistibly catchy opening single, "Last Dollar (Fly Away)," most of the midtempo material that follows ranges from the somber to the morose. There's the night-shift weariness of "I'm Workin'," the alcohol-drenched heartbreak of "Whiskey and You," and the soul-tortured title track. Even a song with the upbeat title "Put Your Lovin' on Me" has McGraw asking his lover to "be my drug" and "take this weight off me." Things turn positively lethal with "Between the River and Me," the story of revenge on an alcoholic, wife-beating stepfather. The set also features the obligatory duet of marital devotion with Faith Hill ("I Need You") and a couple of nods toward classic country ("Kristofferson" and the closing "Shotgun Rider," which could be McGraw's "Mamas, Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys"). "Nothin' to Die For" returns to the inspirational vein of "Live Like You Were Dying," but little here finds McGraw in a feel-good mode. --Don McLeeseCustomer Reviews:
truly amazing........2007-08-04
Tim Mcgraw's voice is REAl. its definitely not perfect but the rawness of his voice goes right along with his raw- to- the- core lyrics. He talks about real life issues, which showcase his big heart. "I need you" will amaze you with his lyrics and FAith Hill's pitchy voice. Seeing this song performed live gave me chills, and it still does every time I hear it on the radio. BUY THIS CD! it is sooo worth it. A lot of people wondered if he would be able to create another awesome CD after Live like you were dying, and I think he did it brilliantly. its more of the same, and thats just the way we like it!

Thanks to a fortuitous intersection of talent and fate, 22-year-old Josh Groban hasn't finished his senior year in performing arts school but has already released his sophomore effort on a major major label. Fans of the young vocal phenom's debut will find much to enthrall them here, even if it nudges the singer closer to the center of producer/mentor David Foster's MOR pop sensibilities. Eschewing much of its predecessor's more overt classic-lite pretensions and pop-rock covers for a slate of dramatic, Eurocentric ballads that serve as a showcase for the singer's inviting baritone, Groban shrewdly positions himself as the American alternative to the Bocelli-Watson crossover axis. "Caruso" may find the singer falling short of its operatic inspiration, but "Oceano" and "My Confession" quickly showcase his true dramatic range (which seems to all but yearn for a bona fide Broadway musical challenge), while a vocal take of Bacalov's graceful "Il Postino" theme uses classical virtuoso Joshua Bell's violin flourishes to good effect. To his credit, Groban displays some promising efforts at songwriting collaboration on the bittersweet "Per Te" and "Remember When It Rains," while the ambient/ethnic soundscape of Deep Forest's "Never Let Go" offers a teasing alternative to the record's otherwise melodramatic production formula. Groban has found commercial triumph via Foster's mentoring, but there remains a nagging sense here that he hasn't truly pushed himself as an artist--yet. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

Sloppy in conception, and even sometimes in the playing, Let It Be often gets a bad rap. Unfairly, as it's often as charming, well written, and (oh yeah) rocking as the Beatles' "better" albums; it's also more outright fun than Abbey Road, the masterpiece it followed into the stores. With Lennon and McCartney working together on the perfect "I've Got a Feeling," "Two of Us," and "Dig a Pony," it's hard to believe these guys were about to implode. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

I'M TIRED, SO TIRED...........2007-07-12
The Convoluted End.......2007-07-08
Overall, though, Let It Be really does little to tarnish the Beatles' reputation. There are small pleasures here that stand the test of time better than some of the Beatles' more grandiose efforts. "Two of Us" and "Get Back" can proudly take their place among the best of Lennon-McCartney, and even the overproduced "Across the Universe" and "The Long and Winding Road" still have a haunting melodic beauty.
And the Beatles, being the Beatles, didn't leave this without an odd wrinkle or two in the backstory. For one thing, this is the album for which the final Beatles recording sessions were conducted. Absent John, the rest of the group convened sometime after Abbey Road was put to bed to record George's "I Me Mine", which was featured in the Let It Be film, but only in rough form. They also put some finishing touches to the title track. These sessions were conducted in January 1970, which gave the Beatles the barest toehold as a working group in the new decade. The initial release of the album also reportedly featured a book of photos that one commentator described over thirty years ago as "useless", though I've never seen that book and would very much like to, if only to say I did.
And there is this: the album is entirely free of even the barest hint of the sometimes painful tension on display in the film. I'm not sure what that means, except that they obviously had moments even at this nadir when they could rally and make the magic happen.
This Album gets such a bad rep.......2007-07-05

Amazon.com essential recording
One of the Stones' most beloved albums, 1969's Let It Bleed was a benchmark for several reasons. First, founding guitarist Brian Jones died during the recording process. Second, the Stones take their last significant look at pure blues (Robert Johnson's spooky "Love in Vain") and country ("Country Honk," the two-stepping alter ego of "Honky-Tonk Women") before folding both styles into a cohesive rock & roll vision. Third, it contains some of the band's most eerie hits, such as the flame-enveloped "Gimme Shelter," the drug-reality anthem "Monkey Man," the epic "You Can't Always Get What You Want," and Mick Jagger's menacing "Midnight Rambler." --Steve KnopperCustomer Reviews:
A very strange album-with one all time classic song.......2007-07-20
I bought this album after initially being satisfied that my 3cd Stones' compilation and their later "Jump back" compilation were sufficient for having the best Stones' songs. What changed? I saw Mick Jagger perform solo in Australia many years ago and a guy I went to the concert with got excited when a certain song started to be played [along with the audience]. I asked what it was...thought he said "Jimmy Shelter", which just confused me!
Anyway, when I heard Jagger play that song live, I considered it to be an instant classic. It's started to be played more on Australian commercial FM radio since then, fortunately. And I do remember this song being listed on some internet poll as the Stone's greatest song...a sentiment I have to agree with, or at least share the honour with "Jumpin' Jack Flash". Gimme Shelter just has has a nice subtle guitar sound and male/female vocals which put goosebumps on the back of your neck.
On this album, there is distortion of this song, and I'm guessing that the recording technology was not able to capture the bigness of this song's sound.
So, why only two stars for this album? Firstly, I don't give albums a lot of stars for merely having ONE great song on it. Secondly, like I say in the headline of my review, this album is passing strange-I did NOT expect an album full of blues and country music from a pop/rock group!
It's been a while since I've listened to this album after I bought it recentlylish [some months ago]-so, going on memory, I think that "Country honk" is what WOULD become a compilation staple, Honky Tonk Women. Unfortunately, it is a little too country for me.
This album does have other songs that often make Stones' compilations, but it's just that I don't particularly like those songs! E.g. "You can't always get what you want".
If you've never heard "Gimme Shelter" [which absolutely shines as a song due to the great female vocals in the song], then either buy this album, or the Stones' compilation "Hot Rocks". If you choose to buy this album, however, then make sure you like or are open to blues and country music.
I'm not sure if this album often gets listed as one of the Stones' great albums, but for me it is not that good [this is the only regular Stones' album I have, along with my two compilations comprising 4 cds].
For die hard fans only, I think, though Gimme Shelter is a 5 star song, in my opinion.

Was it worth to buy this Remastered version?
Absolutely. I hear things in the mix that I'd never heard before (even with my older and well-abused ears!).
Same for Aftermath, and Beggars Banquet. There's a new freshness on these re-editions that is simply staggering.
Of course, only if you have listening equipment that can capture these details... But even on my old Quad and Heresy's the difference is amazing.

Put together by Abba's own Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! manages to cram over 20 of the Swedish supergroup's songs into a threadbare plot. It goes a little like this: Young Sophie is getting married and she's trying to identify which of three men is her father. That's about it. Wisely, the musical doesn't mess around with the songs, save for the insertion of some dialogue or for having some of them performed by a man (it works amazingly well). Abba fans will jump on this import of the London production, but traditional fans of musical theater should consider it as well. After all, Andersson and Ulvaeus's songs have always felt as if they were more than isolated pop gems and actually belonged to a longer narrative. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:

Muddy Waters had his second coming 30 years ago, when longtime friend and disciple Johnny Winter and his Blue Sky label returned him--after a series of listless recordings aimed at the rock audience--to the raw, powerful authenticity of his timeless Chess material with a series of powerful albums. Beginning with 1977's acclaimed Hard Again, a subsequent tour produced Muddy "Mississippi" Waters Live, recorded onstage in Detroit, New York, and Philadelphia with Muddy's band, Winter, and harmonica player/vocalist James Cotton. Enough live material remained for Legacy to release an expanded version with an entire second disc of unissued concert material. It seems even that wasn't the end. This collection returns again to those remarkable concerts, featuring Muddy on five tracks, among them a rousing "I Can't Be Satisfied," "Trouble No More," "Caldonia," and the closing "Got My Mojo Workin'." Winter and Cotton are no less powerful, Cotton redoing Jackie Brenston's hit "Rocket '88'" and Winter ripping up John Lee Hooker's "I Done Got Over It" and "Mama Talk to Your Daughter." --Rich KienzleCustomer Reviews:

HOW CAN YOU GO WRONG?.......2007-07-27
This was one of the most celebrated blues-band tours ever, a tour de force and come-back of sorts for Muddy made after his very fine sides produced by Winter for Blue Sky. The record does not disappoint. The three headliners take turns on vocals, so that the sides ultimately lack some of the intensity and focus of the earlier-issued Muddy "Missippi" Waters Live, which features Muddy's singing throughout. Neither Cotton nor Winter can replace the greatest bluses singer of all-time. Nonetheless with sidemen such as Cotton on harmonica, guitar players Winter and Bob Margolin or piano player Pinetop Perkins, how can you go wrong.
The record features some wicked solos, especially by Perkins and Cotton and some very tight ensemble playing. Run right out -- or click right in -- and buy it now.
