4 out of 5 stars Relaxing Alternative Music for the Winter Season.......2007-01-10

"Shining Light" will lift your spirits during the gloomy winter months, and is a great alternative to over-played commercialized Christmas music. This is a wonderful collection of ancient music that provides a soothing and meditative experience.

5 out of 5 stars Incidental liturgical music. Great listening........2005-12-16

'shining light' performed by Sequentia, the Ensemble for medieval music, is an excellent collection, running for over 70 minutes, of fragments of instrumental music and vocal music in Latin from monasteries in and around the southwestern French city of Limoges.

While this may not rate five stars as an academic piece, it is certainly worth the ranking as music easy on the ears, combining instrumental, male, and female choral music.

I wlll let the scholars fight it out. I simply find it an excellent collection of early music performances.

5 out of 5 stars Sounds as pure as water.......2001-01-04

This disc is so beautiful, so full majesty and spirituality. It can quiet the stress and bring sweet comfort. The Sequentia singers so clean-sounding. Their voices have never sounded so pure, like the running of the streams. The chasms of the earth and the sea would be moved to the sounds.

If you're feeling jaded at the prospect of the usual holiday fare, Anonymous 4 has a truly sublime musical treat in store with their latest release. The contemporary world has turned Santa Claus into an icon of consumerist mania, but the historical figure from whom he ultimately derives was a uniquely inspiring religious figure to medieval Europeans. Anonymous 4 has culled together music from the liturgy of the hours and other sources originally produced to celebrate the legends associated with the fourth-century St. Nicholas, who was considered the patron of sailors, unmarried women, Russia, and--ironically--merchants. As with their earlier Christmas celebration, On Yoolis Night, the quartet ethereally blends their seamless, unaccompanied vocals in this collection of chants, hymns, and readings recounting the saint's life and miracles on behalf of those in need. In addition to Latin settings, the program includes one of the oldest known English-language hymns ("Sainte nicholaes," by a contemporary of Hildegard) and a number of verse-refrain pieces thought to inspire dancing in church. Most of the musical material involves simple unilinear trails of chant, which the ensemble spins out with their trademark unanimous purity of tone. Elsewhere, as in the spiraling eddies of "Novus presul prodiit," their suave harmonies glint like a sudden shaft of light through stained glass. And it is all captured in a warm, ambient church acoustic that is balm for modern ears. --Thomas May

heaven. Perfect harmonies, spiritually uplifting.....I even put this on after a stressful day (I am a teacher) and I melt into a blessed slumber.

a previous reviewer made the comment that this must be what angels sound like. a more true statement has not been made. this is a wonderful cd. the music is amazing. if you're looking for a peaceful sound, this is it. enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Alternative to 'Good Saint Nick'........2005-11-10

'Legends of St. Nicholas' and 'A Star in the East' are both collections of medieval Christmas music. Both are based heavily on Latin chants. The first has some old English lyrics and the second is based on both original Hungarian material and material imported into Hungary from Greece and other centers of Eastern Christianity.

If you are considering one or the other, I find the 'Legends of St. Nicholas' to be the more diverse of the two, as it has chant, polyphony, and even some solo voices. The Hungarian selection seems just a bit too much like all the other material done by Anonymous 4.

To be sure, both are done with a typically exceptional high quality voice and recording technique, so you will not go wrong with either recording.

    Both are highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars dream becomes flesh when i hear them........2001-05-02

I often make collections of early music that combine vocal and instrumental peaces that gives the ultimate pleasure for my ears. like time has stoped for a second... i feel like im diving into a world of total beauty when i hear those 4 angels "chanting" if there is heaven then "anonymous 4" are there for the soundtrack my wish is that someone will convis them to make an album with some instruments added like harp and other autenthic tools(hi hi). in short buy this disk its a treasure!!!(and its one of their best ones too.)

5 out of 5 stars Anonymous 4 is Synonymous 4 Eloquence and Style.......2001-01-26

I first sampled music from this CD last year in the "Free download" section here at Amazon. I enjoyed the music so much I purchased the CD.

Anonymous 4 has a very eloquent sound and style. Their sound is like a smooth flat rock skipping along on a placid lake, and it carries you along with it. This music has nice harmonies and a clear fully rounded sound. The CD itself contains 69 minutes of music that you can listen to while reading, studying, or whatever.

The music's story is developed around the legend or story of St. Nicholas. The CD comes with a booklet that describes this legend and gives a brief history of how it developed. All the songs are performed in a type of Medieval chant in the Latin language.

This is a very nice CD, sample the songs above and see for yourself how eloquent Anonymous 4 sounds.

Rachael Cantu doesn't do anything revolutionary on her short and sweet debut record, but her confidence and appealing voice don't take long to get their hooks in. At eight songs and just over 27 minutes, Run All Night sweeps by like a vapor spray on the ocean--fresh and barely there. Cantu started her career in Southern California (before relocating to her current home in Boston), and some of that leisurely West Coast nonchalance clearly stuck. Her East Coast life brought her into contact with alterna-Goddesses Tegan & Sara, and some of their sharp melodicism is apparent here on tracks such as the smart and sunny "Saturday" (on which Tegan contributes a backup vocal). Later, a duskier mood settles in, set off by Cantu's hazy yet expressive tone. Whether fighting through a layer of reverb on the spare "Blood Laughs" or putting a spark into the slow build of "My First War," her vocal versatility gives the record an alluring glow. In fact her voice is so clearly up to the task, you keep wishing she'd loosen up a little musically. Then again, it's refreshing in a way to hear a debut that doesn't scream "look at me!" with all its might. Cantu should have plenty of people looking anyway. -Matthew Cooke

This CD is amazing. Rachael's sound is addictive. The music she writes is so heartfelt and haunting. This is the best CD I've heard in so long and it's such a relief to know that there are still great musicians out there. If you're going to buy any CD this year, buy this one.

This album is great. I have seen her in concert and also have her first(?) EP Blood Laughs. This music will reach right into you. Go to her website and see if she is playing near you. Also, you Tegan and Sara fans will appreciate Tegan making an appearance on one track. You will love this if you have a heart. If you just love mindless junk, maybe not.

5 out of 5 stars A surprise package of songs old and new..........2004-02-15

Other than knowing Giordani has a magnificent voice and that Mercurio and his baton can work magic with an orchestra, I did not know what to expect from this Sicilian songbook. Gone was the familiarity of those famous arias, torn out of famous operas. Alas, this CD is a delightful, concerted effort to pay homage to the land, the music and the voice that is Sicilia. The great talent of its "bedda vuci" tenor and the arrangements of Maestro Mercurio so beautifully present these works, it's destined to become a classic.

    Comments on some favorite tracks:

To my ears, Track 1 is surprisingly Baroque in nature. It stands alone in this aspect.

Track 2 draws you into its dramatic scheme right off with haunting music. Throughout this piece, the vocal range of sweetness and sorrow match perfectly with the music. This is one of my favorites on the CD. Capturing a forlorn emotion without being gratuitous.

Track 6. This is a shining example of the talents of Maestro Mercurio. His arrangements float cloud-like on their own and around Giordani's vocals. This is why this CD's emphasis is not just on the tenor, but the conductor, orchestrator and arranger Steven Mercurio, who according to the insert, also dreamed up this project. He and Giordani are a 'dream-team' on this CD.

Track 8. Its sound is so exotic. With spiraling voice and a sense of tension created by the orchestrations, this couldn't be improved unless it was simply longer.

Track 12. Definitely more modern in sound, with lilting voice and music along with dramatic crescendos that will leave you toe-tapping. This is a really fun piece. Giordani is a delight, as is the music.

    ALL the tracks are wonderful.

Mercurio and Giordani teamed up for "Tenor Arias," also recently released, with just as successful results. I highly recommend both titles. ciao, Laurie

5 out of 5 stars Total "ear candy" from Mercurio and Giordani.......2004-02-12

Hot in the heels of "Tenor Arias" comes "Sicili Bella" - a complete CD with Mercurio orchestration, arrangements and conducting Giordani on this CD of Sicilian songs. And what a CD it is! The music and voice seduces you from the first to the last note! Girodani's stunning voice is like honey to your ears and Mercurio's outstanding orchestration/arrangements add the whipped cream.

I have not stopped listening to this CD since it arrived yesterday. Especially I simply love the first track (Già il sole dal gange) and track 6 (Amorosi miei giorni). And his rendition of Vaghissima sembianza gave me goosebumps up and down my spine! But the bonus tracks on this CD is a real treat - listen and you will know why!

If you want some serious "ear candy" then this CD is a MUST for any lover of music!

As Maestro Mercurio states in the booklet: "It is my great pleasure to bring forth these wonderful pieces that illuminate the touchingly expressive Sicilian heritage".

My reply is: Thank you for bringing it to us - MORE, MORE, MORE - please!!!

This album proves that their popularity in the 1940s was no accident. While Cantu's accordion work is fairly basic, the harmony vocals are wonderful, with the pure, soulful power of the great country duets. The material is a nice mix of classic corridos, ranchera love songs, and a sprightly polka. Reminiscent of the more famous Alegres de Terán, Maya y Cantu deserve the attention of any lover of traditional border song. --Elijah Wald

    5 out of 5 stars The Beginning.......2001-11-17

This Cd of Maya y Cantu: El Primero Conjunto Norteno Famoso 1946-1949. I bought this cd a few months ago. And I am here to tell you that is a great item to own. Growing up as an Mexican-American child, Norteno music was played at our house or other people's houses. Some where from the old days and new up coming bands. Now Norteno music began in the late 1800's or early 1900's in the Mexico or U.S. Borders. And there has always been Conjunto (Bands) at the those times, but there was no one that was played over the radio at times. Maya y Cantu, popular around the Texas-Mexico border. So by 1946, they where winning regional fans. Most of that came from a radio show they use to do every day for one hour. In a radio station XEDF, at Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. They recorded some great songs & ballads. Even though their duo group last from 1946-1949, they began a legacy with Norteno music. And now new groups who never knew about Maya Y Cantu, now they can.I want to thank Ideal Records and Arhoolie Production Inc. for taking the time to collect all this info about this group. And a BIG THANK YOU to Amazon.com for putting lost music on this site so people can find and enjoy music from the past.Thank You.
