Editorial Reviews

Errol Nazareth, Eye Magazine, May 20th, 2004
"This is a superbly produced, storming debut Cd that pays homage to Colombian & 70's style New York Salsa!"

Product Description
"Blended" by Cache, is an irresistible collection of New York-inspired Latin grooves. With its roots in Cuba, Puerto Rico, Venezuela and Colombia, Cache entices us with an old-school sound that is reminiscent of the old masters Tito Puente, Willy Colon and Ruben Blades. "Blended" was recorded in a studio "live off the floor", in order to successfully capture the energy of their music, in the style of vintage 70's salsa recordings. Cache's record is the first in the new cd series "This Is Lula" which feature live and studio recordings of the diverse local and international performers seen at the famous Lula Lounge in Toronto.

Product Description

This is the first time this album has been released on cd by Rising Son Records, Arlo's private label. It has been out of print entirely for several years. Recently this was digitally remastered to meet the highest standards. This classic album is still fresh and enduring. The songs range from folk roots like Woody Guthrie's "Oklahoma Hills" and John Hurt's "Creole Belle" to Arlo's Woodstock anthem, "Coming In To Los Angeles" and his rocker, "Running Down The Road". For those who had this on LP it will be coming home to an old friend. New listeners will love it.

This is one of the best records from Arlo. The quality of the cd is great. It's a pleasure buy any cd by Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best........2005-10-12

I originally purchased this recording on vinyl and eventually repurchased it on CD. The songs range from highly original folk-rock compositions like Running Down The Road and Coming Into Los Angeles, to moving ballads like Oh, In The Morning. Two highlights are Arlo's rendition of Oklahoma Hills, composed by his father, and the ethereal Living In The Country. The remaining songs are also excellent in their own right and feature some superb instrumental accompaniment by Pete Seeger and a young Ry Cooder. My personal favorite is My Front Pages, which has a strong Dylan influence. This is one of those recordings which grows on you slowly but which leaves a lasting impression. I've had it for more than 18 years and I still enjoy hearing it.

The Radiators are in fine form with this self-titled disc of studio originals. Keyboardist and percussionist Ed Volker's lyrics aren't going to set anyone's brain on fire, but the Rads have all the chops you'd expect from a group that's racked up thousands of performances. "Deep in My Voodoo" and "I Don't Speak Love" boast easy, melodic hooks, and they keep on coming through "Falling Through the Bottom Line" (which offers the CD's hottest guitar riffs) and "Crazy Mona." "These Fugitive Dreams" and especially the call-and-response rocker "Untouched By Human Hands" are lesser tracks. What you've got here is a rock-solid ensemble that's a bit derivative but hardly the weaker for it; indeed, one listen to this disc will encourage you to catch the Rads' live act, so one good thing will lead to another. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Deep In My Voodoo - and at a deal too good to pass up!.......2005-02-16

I've never seen the Radiators (not yet at least!), so I can't compare these songs to the performances they must be capable of, but I've gone wild over their latest (1/2004) live recording - Earth vs the Radiators. Quickly I bought some of the recommended studio releases (all at cheap prices, but this one for only pennies, an amazing deal!). And while none of the studio work comes close to showing the virtuostic playing and playful energy of the live recording, this one has grown to be my favorite (Law of the Fishes (1987) is okay, solid 80's pop/rock songs, but not indispensable, New Dark Ages (1995) is good, but this self titled one (2001) has a few really good songs - Deep in My Voodoo, I Don't Speak Love, Salty Jane, Crazy Mona - as well as a strong showing of mostly ordinary, if slighty twisted, finely crafted pop songs. Like a mix of Little Feat and Springsteen these guys have an all American sound.

Having been around for 25 years it seems they just keep getting better (bigger, richer, fuller sound).

5 out of 5 stars The Radiators.......2002-10-07

I have seen this band live many times, and own a number of their records. I love this album. The Radiators continue to grow as musicians and artists.

4 out of 5 stars Solid outing from New Orleans' legends.......2001-09-02

These guys have been at it for over two decades and may have the most extensive active repertoire of any touring band. Their trademark sound is evident here, with a little extra studio polish. If you need a frame of reference, think Little Feat/Meters rhythm section, Professor Longhair/Dr. John keyboards, Allman Bros/ZZ Top guitars and lots of New Orleans gumbo. Check it out, and don't miss them live.

2 out of 5 stars This is a great band's weakest record.......2001-05-16

I have all of the radiator's music. They have been one of my all time favorite groups for 15 years now. I have seen them live countless times, and I highly recomend that you all do so as well. As for their latest recording, it is poor. The song writing is weak. Don't write new songs just for the sake of releasing an album. I would rather see them release another live album with updated versions of their old standards, and more of the covers that they perform so well such as: Sympathy for the Devil, Born on the Bayou, Goin' Down the Road, Juke Joint Jump, Up on Cripple Creek, to name only a few. There are so many more that they have done over the years. The Radiators can be one of the hottest live acts on the road, but very little of their talent is revealed in their latest album.

5 out of 5 stars Buy it now!!!!.......2001-04-25

The self titled CD is great. They have been playing these songs live for a number of years and are finally available on a CD. My favs are Driver, Botom line, Taking the Long Way Down. A must own for Rads fans...I think I have to buy another one for my car CD player...Buy it now....

    Album Description

Great songs often define--and outlast--the shows that bring them to the public, and the twelve classic show tunes on this album are perfect examples.

These songs are so widely known that they exist independently from their originating shows, and have become part of our popular culture.

In this thirteenth recording for Hickory Cove, Jim Gibson brings his unique solo piano style to these well-loved songs, blending an obvious love of melody with his warm piano playing to create a very pleasant blend. One fan wrote, "It's like cocktail music, but much better....and like jazz, but gentler." We think you'll agree.

5 out of 5 stars Chanting For "Two Souls".......2002-06-30

My betrothed and I wanted Thom to sing a chant for us during our wedding ceremony as we had really admired his acoustic guitar playing, chanting and singing during yoga retreats and workshops over the years. We were pleased to know that Thom had recorded "Chanting Soul" and we listened to it noting that the "Ode To The Lotus" had more of a fusion and perhaps rock feel to it and not quite like the version from "yoga camp." As we played it and played it, it took! Amazing but no such ground has been broken in crossing genres since Madonna took on the "Yoga Invocation" in Ray of Light." Thom's CD was requested by so many guests after he performed at the nuptials in NYC, that we're giving it as a gift to the new die hard fans and will direct all to Amazon.com to purchase their own.

    5 out of 5 stars Uplifting.......2002-05-17

Chanting Soul, by Thom Birch is truly an uplifting and throughly
enjoyable CD...from the first time I heard it, I felt very drawn to Birch's almost haunting chants and the upbeat jazz guitar background. It stirs one's soul, and for me, brings a feeling of inner peace as I listen to it. It is a CD that could be played at anytime...wonderful backgound music for a dinner party...creating almost a nightclub atmosphere as you listen to it. If you want a lift, a comforting peace, and just plain good listening, I highly recommend this CD.

Overall its an enjoyable Cd with lots of danceable rhythms but I don't know if Cache is the best Canadian representation of salsa. In the city of Toronto there are other artists who I feel do a better job, most noticeably Alberto Alberto and his orchetra. But Cache is still a fierce band with lots of positive energy and this Cd shows it. Good job guys!

"Shambhala Dance" is a meditation through movement: an exotic voyage of mysterious asian and middle eastern melodies, full of powerful world beat grooves beautifully blended together to create an atmosphere of intense, vital emotions, both sensual and meditative at the same time. Barbara Markay's music awakens us to the calling of the universal rhythmic pulse which she so expertly weaves into her musical creations, bringing us an experience full of sensuality, beauty and an understanding of our spirit's longing for the sublime.

5 out of 5 stars A mystical place of relaxation and "dreamthought".......2005-03-23

      What News from the East?
RJ Lannan, New Age Reporter, March 10, 2005

The concept of Shambhala takes on many forms; a place for enlightenment to dwell within us or the kingdom of an illuminated society or perhaps a notion of a third dimension where compassion and dignity resides. Barbara Markay taps into the pulse of the planet and her perception of Shambhala to bring you an album of upbeat dance grooves, sultry Spanish percussion and ethnic-tinged instrumentals called Shambhala Dance.

As Markay suggests, the music provides meditation though dance. The seven track album has enough rhythmic music to keep you entranced for some time, so perhaps you may achieve a higher state or you may just enjoy swaying to the beat.

Joining Barbara on her journey to spiritual/musical enlightenment are guitarists Tim May and Alberto de Almar, violin player Eric Gorfain and vocalist Joseph Lecuona. Although there are only seven tunes on Shambhala Dance the shortest one is well over seven minutes and the longest is over nine minutes. Thus, there is much to energize and enthrall you within the fifty-seven minutes of music.

Atlantis is an incredible introduction to the power of Markay's music. In the song she begins with a strong beat and the tinkle of glass as Gorfain's ghostly violin score dances about to Middle Eastern rhythms and odd little nature sounds. You become fully engaged with the sad singing of the guitars and after a time, you feel as if your own heart beats to the music.

Filled with flamenco guitar and Middle Eastern zither, the tune Metamorphosis is guaranteed to get your pulse going. It has an innate beauty that calls to you like a zephyr from the desert on a starry night. You will be the one changing. Your Fire is my favorite of the two vocals on the album. Common Ground is the other. On Your Fire Markay's warm organic voice balances well with the Middle Eastern rhythm and Mediterranean guitar. It is a love song about the fire of passion.
      "Your fire is calling me
Your fire will set me free
Your fire can give me all I need."

Message from Morpheus starts out with a decidedly funky beat. A bit surprising for this kind of album, but it soon transforms itself into a strange, flowing tune with a moaning guitar lead and a dance groove rhythm. The missive from Morpheus, the god of dreams, is that you need not be asleep to realize your dreams. Allow the music to take to that state between wakefulness and slumber. There you may find an answer. It is my favorite on the CD.

The final cut and one of the most dramatic songs on the album is her version of the mantra The Gayatri or prayer to the sun. The hymn is usually sung as the sun rises and it is an entreaty to the gods for blessings. As in many Tantric mantras, it is the belief in the power of magic combined with the compelling of the gods through prayer that makes the ritual produce positive results. Markay's eerie rendition featuring Sathya Sai Baba. The additional voices of Stacy Rasfeld and Aaron Loo give sway to the powers of the mantra.

As a budding pianist Barbara Markay garnered a scholarship to the Juilliard School of Music when she was ten (perhaps she saw Michael Dulin hanging around in the halls). She graduated from the college division as a composer and pianist. She has had her own one woman show, Little Lulu, composed music for India's revered Sathya Sai Baba Organization and performed with rock stars Carly Simon and Eric Clapton. She also has two previously released albums, Change to Come and Heart Like a Song.

On Shambhala Dance Markay creates music that will escort you to a mystical place of relaxation and "dreamthought". My advice is to get up, shake the cobwebs loose and go with the flow.

5 out of 5 stars Ride this rhythmic, sensual, sonic meditation ..........2004-07-23

The sinuous rhythms of Shambala Dance won?t allow your body to stay still. This CD blends the best of trance dance grooves with intriguing melodies tantalizingly spiced with hints of flamenco and raga. This is world music at its best: playful percussion, multi-layered electronics and beguiling vocal lines that are a compelling mix of Western, Spanish, Brazilian, Indian and Arabic musical traditions. The music is addictive: a treat for the senses and a gift to the ear. The instrumental cuts wind through you, while the transcendent vocals inspire and lift your spirit long after the CD has ended. Buy this music for yourself, and for every one of your friends.
