Album Description

La Familia Valera Miranda sextet was founded in 1985 by Felix Valera Miranda, his wife, his three sons, and a close friend of the family. The group aims to preserve the archetypal sound of the bands and ensembles as that played in the 1920s. The selection of titles here includes some of the most internationally acclaimed Cuban composers, from Lorenzo Hierrezuelo to Simón Diaz, among others.

Talented singer/composer/guitar player Felix Valera Miranda leads this marvelous cuban typical ensemble which specializes in the performance of the "son oriental" or "son rhythm" Oriente province style. Cuba's legendary "Trio Matamoros" were among the pioneers who developed this style during the 1920's, 30's and 40's and also the equally legendary "Duo Los Compadres" with Lorenzo Hierrezuelo, Francisco"Compay Segundo"Repilado and later Reinaldo "Rey Caney"Hierrezuelo, defined it. The album title "Can~a Quema" is a son composed by "Los Compadres" leader/lead singer & guitar player Lorenzo Hierrezuelo. The Familia Valera Miranda continues that great musical message with great vocals and very skillful arrangements. "Can~a Quema", "Se Quema La Chumbamba","Mi Pan~uelo","Pa Los Pinares","Venga Guano", etc. will lift you from your seat and hastily request your partner or anyone available to dance! Familia Valera Miranda "The Son".......2000-04-28

The songs of this CD, their first for the "Nimbus"label can only be rated as superb. This talented musical family beautifully interprets the "son oriental", like no other group, with great feeling and rhythm guaranteed to please the most demanding audiences. Familia Valera Miranda is not only continuing the internationally popular style of the late Lorenzo Hierrezuelo and his "Duo Los Compadres", but actually improve it, adding some of their own,"homemade" composed music. Old Hierrezuelo classics such as "Chicharrones", "Sin Anduyo", "El Vendedor de Agua", "Macusa", "Descripcion de Un Suen~o",etc.are renewed with a traditional yet updated style. Also Beny More's 1958 classic "Que Bueno Baila Ud", is transformed for the first time ever, into an inviting "son-oriental", which is absolutely delightful. Valera Miranda's "homemade" Abur!Paisano" and "Vida Parrandera" show the high quality and creative capability of this amazing musical family featuring Felix, Carmen Rosa, Rhadames and the boys. As of today 5/24/2000, this is the latest compilation available by this great cuban musical family. "Este Vacilon", "Salome", "Castellano", "Pa'l Monte", "He Perdido Contigo", "Si Las Viejas", "El Aji de Cocina","Bambay", "Vuela Como El Aguila", "Murio Valera en San Luis", "Ella y Yo", "La Chumbamba","Nengon", "Pin~a, Tabaco y Ron","Pajaro Lindo", "Abur Paisano", are the newly recorded 16 hits by Cuba's greatest musical family, for France's "Naive" label. Even though some of these songs were previously recorded for other labels, these are newly recorded versions. Included with this great CD is a colorful booklet with excellent liners and valuable historical data, which tells about this family's distinguished patriotic and musical ancestry. This CD is a must for all the Familia's and cuban music fans. A collector's item and classic.

"Llora Mi Nena","Bambay", "Tuna,Mayari,Guantanamo", "Rita La Caimana", "Murio Valera en San Luis", etc. will make you want to dance. Then the romantic son-boleros,such as "Juramento", "Retorna", "Dulce Embeleso", "El Misterio de Tus Ojos", etc. will remind you of the times and places when serenading your loved one was a must.
