5 out of 5 stars Great stuff!.......2002-10-24

Erich kunzel has recorded a wonderfully exhilerating item this time! Wonderfully exhuberant is mild compared to the lively playing Kunzel always gets from this great orchestra! Arrangements are mostly by Tommy Newsome who knows how to write charts of varying degrees of excellence, particularly the winsome "Girl from Ipanema" which compliments the lyrics endless reflections on a beautiful, bikini-clad young woman. "Sweet and Gentle" is a saucy number while Eric Knight, the only arranger to get the Boston Pops under Fiedler to swing to new heights, contributes an unforgettably boisterous account of "Lambada." The sound is full of punch and contrast. And Doc Severinsen plays in "Virgen" a marvelous soloistic stratospheric account. My advice is to buy this immediately. It's one hot album!

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful arrangements of music from all over the world........2001-10-26

Telarc and Eric Kunzel never fail to amaze at the quality of their selections.

Even tough some of the arrangements here have a little too much
fanfare at the start they are still great to listen to.

Most of these melodies you have heard them at least once in you life. And they are reproduced here with the Kunzel magic.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful collection of Music.......2001-10-26

A Beautiful collection of music from all over the world.
(latin world that is)

I little grandiose on some selections (that's kunzel) but GREAT nonetheless.

5 out of 5 stars Favela = SLUM.......2007-01-31

The word Favela translates roughly to the english word Slum. The music on this CD is from one of the worlds biggest ghetto's with the worst social conditions. Some people do not like the rio funk music because it is "too simple"...THESE PEOPLE ARE POOOOOOR!!!! They are not recording in a industry standard, "over the top" studio with cutting edge gear...just the bare essentials and it translates incredibly. These recordings really communicate the intensity of the favela party where a good time is badly needed to enjoy life. Some of the realest music on earth. No fluff, just a party in the ghetto.

5 out of 5 stars A blast for the booty from Brazil.......2006-04-04

This music is fun! The music is based on big beat Miami Bass with lyrics shouted in Portuguese. Writing about it, it sounds like it would be an awful mish mash of stuff, but this music is great. It'll get the body moving--this is great party music or for rolling down the street. There's another compilation called "Rio Baile Funk" that also has a lot of this type of music. Both CDs have a few tracks that are on both, but overall both CDs cover slightly different territory in this original style of music from Brazil.

5 out of 5 stars funk brasileiro é o máximo.......2006-02-25

I loved this album. Just listening to it makes me wanna dance all night. It's awesome! Liricks are a little obsene but the sound is really catchy. My favorite performer is Bonde do Tigrão!!

5 out of 5 stars M.I.A./Diplo fans should pick this up.......2006-01-15

...one bad thing: After you listen to these outrageously raw beats from the streets of Brazil, "Arular" by M.I.A. will not sound as original as it did before. But, oh well, every one has their influences. This "Baile funk" stuff is awesome. Or "Rio Funk", either way, I beleive the word "favela" describes the parties where this type of music is played in Brazil.

By the way,...how in the world could a reviewer think all these songs sound the same? This stuff is all over the place. Every minute you're engaged and dancin it up in your car as the dj mixes up an entire UNIVERSE of beats. OKAY, I do confess, its a bit noisy and crazy. But its street music. I think it adds to the charm. The sound is similar to taking one step forward, and then two steps back... you wind up in a different place than you had expected. Though you can here that technology is lacking, it makes this mix all the more charming. The upbeat feel to this album is a spicey treat, and the Do-It-Yourself feel of old school electro is definitely present. There's Afrika Bambaata in the background in one track for sure.

This is street music, raw and real. Its got a DIY feel to it, but that is a good thing. Feels like you're there while djs are mixing it up all dirty in order to keep the place moving. Plenty of vocals (in Portegeuse?) thrown in to the layers of booty shaking rhythms keeps the feel ROWDY. And I mean rowdy... the MCs are screaming things in some other language. But after listening to all that Reggaeton on the radio, I like it.

Mind you, this isn't normal "electronica". Its definitely "urban" music. And sounds a bit 80s/90s. But, as I said before, its all part of its charm.

If you have heard of Diplo (who was on tour with M.I.A. when she first blew up), his Florida album features a track that is pure "Baile Funk"/"Rio Funk"/"Favela Beats": Diplo Rhythm feat. Sandra Melody, Vybz Cartel & Pantera Os Danadinho. Its an awesome track. Now I know where his influences are... RIGHT HERE!

5 out of 5 stars Exciting Listening.......2006-10-24

I've just discovered (for myself) Jovino! Heard him live, rushed to my computer to buy a disk, bought three, of which this is the most exciting. I doubt Jovino would accept the comparison, but his music reminds me of the best of Dave Brubeck! A complex, intellectually compelling piano combined with a lyrical, vocal sax or clarinet; a penchant for insistent and urgent rhythms and counterrhythms; a subtle, understated yet memorable bass. The Live at Olympia is also an exceptional album. This is not some kind of World Music novelty; this is mainline jazz.

5 out of 5 stars Jovino is Masterful.......2006-08-02

Jovino is a true Master of the Piano and Flute, a Master in composition, a Master in arrangements, a true Master at performing and the adjectives could go on and on, but all it'd take is for you to purchase this masterpiece and experience it for yourself.
This is without a doubt one of the best Brazilian Jazz CDs of this 2006; 9 of the 11 cuts here are from his own inspiration, and they are HOT, the ones I've enjoyed the most are:
a) Estrela do Mar (Starfish)
b) Festa de Ere (Children's Party)
c) Homeopatia (Homeopathy)
d) Rancho Azul (Blue Ranch) with Specal Guest Marcos Amorim in guitars
e) Cerca do Macaco (Monkey's Fence)
and the other 2 cuts to finish up the album are also very important;
f) Nana -a Brazilian Jazz Standard written by Moacir Santos/Mario Telles- here performed by Joyce
and
g) Juvenal No Grumari -written by Jovino's musical mentor Hermeto Pascoal- who also performs here superbly.

And finally I'd like to add the list of wonderful musician who accompany Jovino for this masterful creation:

- Jovino Santos Neto / Piano, Flute
- Rogerio Botter Maio / Bass
- Marcio Bahia / Drums
- Hermeto Pascoal / Voice on glass w/water, Melodica, Euphonium mouthpiece and chewing-gum aluminum wrapper on Juvenal in Grumari
- Joyce / Vocals on Nana
- Hamilton de Holanda / 10-string Mandolin on Gente Boa
- Gabriel Grossi / Harmonica on Bach-te-vi
- Marcos Amorim / Acoustic Guitar on Blue Ranch
- Fabio Pascoal / Percussions

Enjoy this outstanding musical journey with Jovino !!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Seu Jorge's beginnings. Excellent........2007-01-05

Searching for 70's Brazilian black soul in Rio de Janeiro, the owner of the music store told me: "If you like jazz-funk take this album. It is not 70's stuff, but it's a must."
Indeed. An especially if you are a Seu Jorge fan. Excellent vocals, great horns, groovy rythms and very 'reivindicative' lyrics.
This group just launched this album, then they separated and Seu Jorge became the revolution we all know.
This is better than recent Seu Jorge's albums.

4 out of 5 stars VERY VERY NICE.......2000-03-29

If you want to hear what Brazilian musicians (from Rio de Janeiro) are making about popular music, you will like to hear this album. I played it a lot in the last 10 months and I still like it!! If you can understand Portuguese is still better because you will hear very satiric words on that!

4 out of 5 stars Intriguing........2007-03-11

Vinicius de Moraes called him a "phenomenon who accomplished the perfect union of both cultivated and popular culture", and Chico Buarque has certainly played a special role in the Brazilian music scene.
Once hailed as a great traditionalist, he went on to cause controversy with his experimental take on samba, and for his work as a dramatist. Now, after an eight-year gap (in which he completed another novel) this "carioca" (one who was born in Rio) is back with an intriguing batch of new songs, examining how his much-loved city lost out to Sao Paulo as Brazil's economic capital, and how Rio is now battling with drugs and crime.
The songs are lilting, thoughtful and conversational, using a mixture of sparse instrumentation and full orchestra, and with a dramatic, atmospheric mix of strings, electric guitar and voices on "Ode Aos Ratos".
There's only one complaint. He is a celebrated lyricist - so why is there no translation for those who don't speak Portuguese?

4 out of 5 stars Carioca Diferente.......2006-06-08

Carioca is the most unusual album by Chico. Lyrics are 90% free in the music context. Which is perfect. At the end with the terrifc "Imagia" (music by maestro Jobim), we have a felling that Carioca could be Chico's last work in music...

I hope not...

    5 out of 5 stars Kostelanetz Treasures.......2001-02-08

In my opinion, the composer series recordings by Kostelanetz are among his best. The arrangements are for full orchestra and some of the best examples of Kostelanetz' passion and insight into the golden age of musical theatre. Six of the Cole Porter selections I had on '78s when they were first recorded, and the arrangements are the essence of Cole Porter. Kostelanetz indeed, plays the words, that is, during recording sessions, the orchestra members had the lyrics as well as the music on their music stands. My favorite is Porter's "I Love You". The Kostelanetz strings have a way of reaching my heart strings - it seems to express in music the way I feel about my wife of 42 years - you guessed it - I'm in my late 60's. I have this CD on back order, and have not really listened to it - but I have enjoyed these recordings for many years. However, to evaluate the quality of sound on these CDs I purchased the CD in the same series "Music of Irving Berlin" . The sound is outstanding, and true to the Kostelanetz original recordings. The Vincent Youmans recordings are a bit newer and first appeared on mono-LP. Again, they are excellent Kostelanetz arrangements and outstanding performances. What a treasure to find both of these wonderful LP recordings on one CD. I expect to have my copy of this CD from Amazon within the next week or so, and I will update this review after listening.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful interpretations of Sergio Assad's music .......2006-11-10

This CD is wonderful!! Alieksey Vianna performs each piece with sensitivity to nuance and with flawless technique. It's clear that Alieksey is a great player - a tour de force of dexterity. Vianna maintains a beautiful tone throughout the disc, and the most demanding passages remain controlled. As a classical guitarist, I am inspired by Alieksey's interpretations on this disk. Sergio Assad's amazing composition skills are clearly demonstrated, and my personal favorites are Aquarelle, Parati, and Fantasia Carioca. The entire CD is full of brilliant, beautiful music, exciting rhythms, and technique to the max. The world needs more of Sergio Assad!

4 out of 5 stars Premier Premier Premier.......2006-02-25

Alieksey is a premier performer premiering the compositions of Sergio Assad. Assad is known as an amazing player, whose performances have an incredible number of musical notes. The project that Assad entrusted to Alieksey, the premier recording of Sergio's compositions, is significant.
Vianna brings it off convincingly, offering renditions that are powerful, tender, incisive, and always musical.

My personal favorite is Fantasia Carioca.
