5 out of 5 stars Prepare to Be Mesmerized .......2006-09-23

I was given this album by a friend. I'm not a connoisseur of international music, but I must say I was instantly captivated by this musical compilation. The songs have a catchy, relaxing quality to them.

5 out of 5 stars still love it after 15+ years.......2006-03-29

I bought the original about 15 years ago in cassette tape form
(yeah, I am getting older:). Even though I agree that Byrnes should have updated it with younger and more current artists, these classic songs still move me.

5 out of 5 stars This disc introduced me to Brazil.......2006-03-16

What a great CD. I have all of Byrnes Brazilian discs and wish he would issue more. He really captured what makes Brazilian music great with his first three discs in this series. Still, this one is really special. The fourth and fifth disc in this series are dedicated to the artist Tom Ze who is brilliant in his own weird way. This first disc makes you just want to dance all over your living room. I wish Byrne would release more. Of course I now have a lot of the cds by the original artists, but this is the one that hooked me. Buy and enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Not a New CD.......2005-03-29

Why continue to recycle a CD that is now roughly sixteen years out of date? Yes, it is a great compilation, or, at least, it was in 1989, but times have changed. Maybe somebody should talk Byrne into updating this CD once again, as he did in 1999, with a new compilation or two or six. There are about a score of styles and literally dozens of artists in Brazil who deserve recognition for the music that they are making now. And it is somehow odd that while there is not exactly a shortage of Brazilian compilations out there, most of those efforts have a regretable tendency to recycle yesterday's headliners. How about a fresh compilation that includes such diverse artists as Djavan, Cibelle, Autoramas, Silvia Torres, Monica Salmaso, Carlinhos Brown, Vinicius Cantuaria, Helena, Trio Da Paz, Charlie Brown Jr, Rita Ribeiro, Fernanda Porto, Seu Jorge, and about, oh, fifty others. All are interesting artists making incredible music, and all are making that great music in the 21st century.

5 out of 5 stars one of my desert island CDs.......2004-10-12

I've owned this CD for over ten years and it remains one of my favorites. The Brazilian music featured here manages to be both instantly accessable and yet at the same time exotic and new, from the stripped-down funkiness of "Ponta de Lança Africano" to the majestic "Equatorial" to the melancholy harmonies on "Fio Maravilha." I suppose the reason for this is the fact that these artists grew up immersed in their rich musical traditions, but at the same time they were exposed to the music of the Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, James Brown, etc. I don't like most of what falls under the "world music" umbrella, but this collection really hits the spot for me.

Also worth mentioning are the excellent liner notes and bilingual lyrics. Honestly, my only complaint is that this CD inspired me to go out and look for more Brazilian music but I've been unable to find anything else that I loved as much as this.

"Cuban doo-wop" is good shorthand for the sound of this enormously appealing quintet. But Bossa Cubana, an exhumation of 17 tracks by '60s stars Los Zafiros, is even more unpredictable than that phrase would leave you to believe. The music here carries echoes of everything from Beny More (sans horn section) to Little Anthony and the Imperials, while often sounding like a secret influence on Chris Isaak. Los Zafiros are at their most affecting when wailing and harmonizing over slow-dance tempos; listen to their Spanish translation of "My Prayer" ("Mi Oracion"), and you'll never hear the Platters quite the same way again. --Rickey Wright

1 out of 5 stars Bossa Cubana.......2003-05-24

I ordered this CD by recommendation and am keenly disappointed. In my opinion, it is over-produced and over-glitzed, a kind of Euro-disco production. It lacks the freshness and vitality of Cuban music (the kind I hoped it would be), e.g., Omara, the Buena Vista Social Club. There was rock and roll, doo-wop, some production numbers" such as "a Day in the Life of a Fool," some straight-out-of-the-fifties music, and very few bossa novas. I suggest that anyone wishing to order the CD should preview it very carefully.

THIS IS THE VERY BEST OF THE ZAFIROS AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN TITLED THAT! IT'S NOT JUST THE SONGS BUT THE MASTERING AND QUALITY OF THE SOUND THAT MAKES THIS THE BEST CD (TO DATE) OF THE ZAFIROS, AS FAR AS THE MUSIC WHAT CAN BE SAID...IT'S FABULOUS..IT'S FRANKIE LYMON MEETS THE PLATTERS BUT BETTER...THE ZAFIROS WERE FOR VOICES AND ONE GUITAR AND ALL FOUR SINGERS WERE LEAD SINGERS..NOT JUST ONE SINGER AND THE OTHERS STRICTLY BACKING..THEY EACH HAD DIFFERENT STYLES AND INTERPRETED THE SONGS BEAUTIFULLY...THIS CD CAPTURES ALL OF THE MAGIC...FROM THE STEAMY BALLADS TO THE UP-TEMPO DANCEABLES THEY WILL ALL BECOME FAVORITES..JUST LISTEN..THE DOO-WOP INFLUENCE IS TREMENDOUS CONSIDERING THIS GROUP WAS BORN AFTER THE EMBARGO WHEN NOTHING AMERICAN WAS WELCOMED IN CUBA..IT'S TOO BAD THEY NEVER MADE IT TO THE STATES. THERE'S ALSO SOME INTERESTING ANECDOTES IN THE LINER... A MUST!

Saw the film Havana Mi Amor at the Mill Valley Film Festival (great movie about romance Havana style, a TV repairman, and soap operas imagined and real) which features many songs by los Zafiros, and while it took me forever to figure out how to buy many of the songs from the film (on this CD), it has finally happened. So many sweet moments, and great to dance to!

awesome cd. Brought back lots of memories. Sometimes we forget how rich our culture really is. I use to listen to them a lot back home in my native Cuba. I even know all of the songs by heart. It is a pity that Hermosa Havana is not included, but is excellent anyway. By the way, saw the movie about them in Miami a while back.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

This eminently enjoyable soundtrack album gathers together a multigenerational collection of artists whose roots span South America, the Caribbean, Europe, and Africa, underscoring the rich, dizzying variety of music that all too often simply gets labeled "Latin." The culture's telling sense of history is present throughout, from the Cuban son preservationism of Buena Vista Social Club singer-guitarist Eliades Ochoa ("Si en un Final") to the compelling reggae/rap/salsa cocktails of Sergent García ("Hoy Me Voy"). Bebel Gilberto updates traditional Brazilian jazz with contemporary production touches, yet never loses the music's cool sheen on "Sem Contenção," while Lila Downs puts an equally chic, smoky spin on the standard "Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps." Venezuela's standout pop combo Los Amigos Invisibles wax loopy and lounge-suave on "Cuchi-Cuchi" and "Si Estuvieras Aquí," respectively, and even veteran Rocky scorer Bill Conti captures the tropical fever on his title track. And in what must be a soundtrack first, a series of individual menu cards relating to the film are inserted with the liner notes. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great mood setter.......2002-04-24

This is a pretty darned good sampling of Latin music. My wife saw the movie and immediately picked up the CD (I guess that says something good about the movie.) We've listened to it several times over and enjoyed it quite a bit. My one complaint is that it is uneven. Some of the songs on the CD aren't as good as others and it makes it hard to listen to the CD straight through. We were introduced to several great artists through this CD, and if you are looking for some fun Latin stuff, then I highly recommend picking up some albums from the artists represented on the CD, especially: Los Amigos Invisibles, Lila Downs, and Bebel Gilberto. And while you are at it, you should pick up Susana Baca's CD too.

3 out of 5 stars A little more oomph would have helped..........2001-09-14

This CD delivers as intended - merely a soundtrack to a not-so-good movie. While it covers a wide range of musical styles, it lacks, much like the movie, the one ingredient that is so vital to Latin music: PASSION! There are a few worthy tracks, such as P18's "La Verdolaga" and Eliades Ochoa's "Si En Un Final", but these aren't enough to carry the whole disc. It might be better served as an introduction to new and up and coming artists. For an intro to Latin music I suggest any compilation CDs from labels like Putumayo, Rough Guide, or Allegro.

5 out of 5 stars It will capture your latin soul........2001-09-11

This is a great introduction to new interesting Latin Music groups with styles ranging from Cha Cha Cha, Brazilian, Latin Pop to Cuban Folk. All excellent songs. Lila Downs voice alone will make you melt. There are no bad/boring songs on this cd. Plus the cd notes include about 10 recipes from the movie.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Hmm. Decent double disc set.......2002-02-05

Well, can't say I agree much with the previous reviewer. I think this is a pretty fair compilation. This is really music of Brazil with mostly Brazilian musicians and singers. Perhaps the reviewer wanted more "traditional" Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius De Moraes or perhaps American renditions of Bossa Nova/MPB?

This is a double disk set from the Gold series, which specializes in featured artists and styles. That said, the sound quality in this double disk set is NOT like that of the Antonio Carlos Jobim tribute or the acoustic/Spanish guitar releases. It's better, although it still won't wow you.

The styles are everything from Bossa Nova, Samba, Tropicalismo and MPB - what is neat about this CD is that you can get a vivid sense of the many different styles of music in Brasil and how the music in Brasil sort of is like a spider web, from one sound leading into the other and etc. Featured artists are Caetano Veloso, Ivan Lins, Astrud Gilberto, Antonio Carlos Jobim with Miucha, Chico Buarque, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Milton Nascimento, Baden Powell, Maria Bethania, Gal Costa, Joyce, Edu Lobo and many many more.

I enjoyed this CD. It's a bit off of the beaten path and offers some of the music that probably did not reach the American shores from Brasil in the seventies and eighties when the music was still evolving. It will not blow you out of the water, but I enjoyed it. For the price, the double disk is nice.

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointed!!!.......2001-01-30

I am a Bossa Nova collector and I was very disappointed with this double CD simply because it has VERY LITTLE bossa nova music on it. It's mostly samba, tropicalism, and MPB. It might be a good "eclectic" collection of Brazilian music, but that's about it. I'm giving my copy to my nephew.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent Compilation.......1999-09-16

Bossa Nova Gold is an excellent compilation double CD of various wizards of Bossa Nova. It contains songs usually left off of other compilations and includes many of my favorite artists and their songs, like Gal Costa's smooth Bem Bom and Baden Powell and Caetano. But you will be disappointed if you uexpect to hear Elis Regina or Leila Pinheiro.

Compiled by former Talking Head David Byrne and released in 1989, with liner notes and translations by Arto Lindsay, Beleza Tropical documents a New York hipster's first infatuation with the rich, deep, and varied spectrum of Brazilian popular music from the rebellious '70s. There are better Brazilian anthologies, but none so clearly assembled in order to counter the received opinion of Brazilian music as lightweight bachelor-pad fluff (although Milton Nascimento, with his beautiful high tenor, sometimes comes close). Caetano Veloso (whose magnificent "Terra" is itself worth the price of admission) and Gilberto Gil are remarkable lyricists whose music is influenced as much by the Afro-Brazilian rhythms of northern Brazil as by the Beatles. Jorge Ben contributes a pair of highfalutin yet funky soccer songs, Chico Buarque is at his most uncompromisingly poetic, and Nazare Pereira taps deep into Brazilian folklore. --Richard Gehr

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Perfect For Non-Experts.......2007-04-10

Back in the '80s when this came out, US pop stars like David Byrne and Paul Simon won great praise for discovering "world music." Of course, this was the height of arrogance because this music has been around forever, just not known to many in the US. This Brazilian sampler is certainly melodious, though some think it doesn't contain the best work of the great Brazilian artists featured. So what? If you don't know this music very well, this CD makes a fabulous introduction. The lilting rhythms and irresistible melodies will grab any ears on first hearing and not let go.

3 out of 5 stars Great Artists...Just Not Their Best Songs........2003-11-04

I was definitely a little dissapointed in this CD. I originally bought it because it had a lot of my favorite artists on it (Jorge Ben, Milton Nascimento, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Chico Buarque, etc.), however this CD does not showcase these artists best songs or work.

5 out of 5 stars A great CD.......2000-01-19

I've had this CD for nearly 10 years now, and I still love it. It is a great introduction to Brazilian music. Like many compilations featuring various artists, there is a wide variety of styles; some songs I don't like as much, while others are just incredible, and that's why it ranks as a five-star CD. I would rank the best songs on "Brazil Classics I: Beleza Tropical" with songs by the Beatles or Simon & Garfunkel. It's hard to describe-- the music is a little bit familiar and accessable to my American ears, and at the same time very different than anything I had heard before. I gave a copy as gift to a friend, and he loved it. Then he promptly went out and bought two copies to give as gifts to other friends. It's definitely the kind of CD you want to share with your friends and spread the word about. The liner notes are quite good, too.

4 out of 5 stars Almost worth replacing.......2000-01-08

I owned this CD until recently. Basically, I wore it out by playing certain cuts over, and over, and over ... mostly at grad school parties where friends would always ask "What's this! " About 70% of this material is as good as any music I've ever heard, Beatles included. It's the other 30% that grates. Such are the slings & arrows of any very good, challenging compilation by more than one artist. Continuity can be a problem. Worth owning once as a fine (and historically important) intro to Brasilian music, but not worth replacing. There's better musica brasileira to be had - once you know what you like. Therein lies the value of this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Why ONLY 5 stars?.......1999-12-01

This is one of the best compilations (not only of brazilian music, but of any kind) i've ever had the luck to listen to, even though i think it's not the best David Byrne's compilation (i think Samba is). It's great from beginning to end, it doesn't have a flaw, it offers you some of the best creations of some of the best MPB musicians of any time. This is a must (IMHO) not only for all the MPB fans (including myself) but all music fans out there, you can't go wrong with this. Thanx David Byrne for such compilation, and even more thanx to the musicians that in any way were part of the process of creating such marvelous music. thanx again!

I bought this cd for the 1st song...however, once I heard the entire cd, I was in love with it! Everything about the cd is wonderful...even the flow of each song...not one bad song! I recently had a dinner for a few friends, I put this cd on the background...well let's just say before the night was over, Amazon.com had 10 orders for this cd! It's even inspired us to learn Portuguese!

    4 out of 5 stars A tale of obsession.......2006-05-25

If I told you how I came to own this CD, you'd want it too and in fact I do know of another person who, because of my relentless drive and determination to secure this album, has now become curious, if not obsessed also. I was in a coffee shop, some say the best coffee shop in Dublin (Il caffé di napoli) I was standing in line when I was struck by the amazing music that drifted over and lingered around my ears. It was quirky, there were the obligatory Brazilian whistles, beautiful harmonies, rifts, intense melodic rhythms. My legs started tapping, my hips swinging in and out. Other queue memebers were nodding happily. I had to have it. I had to ask who it was. "Who is this?" I asked the girl serving. She was extremely busy and very quickly told me. "Teda" It sounded like. Being slightly deaf, over the din of coffee seekers and a delicate samba air, I couldnt hear. I'd hoped she'd write it on a napkin. When I got my coffee I asked again. The guy showed me the album, it had an orange cover and an F and a J in the title. But I'd never remember. And yet, I still had to have it. So I turned into Nancy Drew and began sleuthing. Various internet searches failed, a frantic dash through the World Music Section in Tower was no good either. I could always go back, but I was too embarrassed. Eventually, after ringing Road Records and asking them to secure it, with the helpful information of "it's got an F and a J in it" I rang Il Caffe di Napoli and we had a confused vowel exchange " e" I mean "u" "Is that English "E" or Italian "i" I got it; Feijoada was mine. Luckily HMV had one left in store and it was mine all mine. The guy in Road Records is trying to get his hands on a copy now. Perhaps he's told someone else and they too want it. I listened to it last night and fell aslepp smiling and this morning and commuted with an inane grin on my face, and believe it or not, it's had a salutary effect on the weather. We've finally got a bit of sunshine. J'accuse Pure Brazil. Get it

2 out of 5 stars let's call this one Bossa Lite.......2001-03-19

For some reason this one sounded better at the listening station in the store and failed to deliver once I got it home--go figure. Tropicale doesn't have the dance groove that previous bossa brava compilations had. In fact, this one tries to be a lot cooler--like lounge music but doesn't quit cut it for me. Besides the cuts "Never Before" and "Orbit Lounge" I really can't tell the difference between these. Perhaps it'll grow on me--let's hope.

Love Brazil ,love the Beatles ,hate this record ! Cheesy ,embarrassing elevator music .Waste of money.Enough said.

Stay with the same series that produced Bossa N stones .

    2 out of 5 stars elevator music.......2006-08-24

Being an enthusiast of both the Beatles and Bossa Nova, it was natural for "Beatles in Bossa Nova" to peak my curiosity. The previous glowing reviews convinced me to invest in this tribute. Those reviewers have lost all creditability because this CD is simply awful. First, this isn't really Bossa Nova. This is elevator style smooth jazz with a Bossa feel. While the notes claim that this blooper was made in Brazil, it sounds painfully gringo. Second, the production is cornball. Most instruments are synthesized. Though released in 1990, there are enough synthesizers and cheesy keyboards to sound like 1982. Third, the musicians gave uninspiring and lifeless performances. The vocals sound like something off the Lawrence Welk show circa 1964. By a group called Brazilian Tropical Orchestra, I expected and even hoped for a little cheesiness -but this more than what any mortal listener can tolerate. If you want to verify my review, call your bank's customer service department and listen to the background music while you're on hold. The failure of this tribute is especially apparent when compared to the success of like-minded projects such as "Bossa N' Stones" and "Bossa N' Marley." With so many good Beatles tributes, it's a shame to waste your money and ears on "Beatles in Bossa Nova."

5 out of 5 stars Bosa Nova Beatles.......2005-09-05

FABULOUS! What a fun CD of many of your favorite Beatles songs.
A must for any Beatles fans.

    4 out of 5 stars A great mix!.......2000-02-20

This cd is really interesting. The bossa nova tones give to the beatles songs a unique elegancy and pleasant softness. Some outstanding tracks are "The fool on the Hill", "And I love her", and "The long and winding road". Buy this cd, it is really a must for everyone who likes listening beatles songs from a different perspective.
