Bethany Yarrow and Rufus Cappadocia manage to get quite a bit out of not much at all. Their spare collaboration on 900 Miles references a wide swath of folk and jazz, but the nocturnal smokiness of Yarrow's haunted alto and Cappadocia's cello combine for a sound that's slightly outside of the usual music universe. There's some Cowboy Junkies here, a dash of Tuck & Patti there and an overall otherworldliness more akin to a David Lynch movie. Yarrow doesn't just vamp for the whole record though; her range careens from hushed to strident, and she even does a pretty fair PJ Harvey wail (circa 4-Track Demos) on "Linin' Track," and "Isn't That So?" Meanwhile, Cappadocia often puts down his bow, extracting some funk out of "If I Had My Way," or leading off "East Virginia" with a little Latin guitar flavor. But the heart of the record is in the ballads, as the duo stretches out with long, dark adagio passages filled with dust and desire. Bethany & Rufus successfully transcend their limited instrumentation, coming up with a debut that gets better and better with each listen. -Matthew CookeAlbum Description
It often seems that the best music being made today completely defies category. The most exciting artists might mix influences ranging from dusty American field recordings to modern jazz, from delicate folk pop to the Griot traditions of Africa. Bethany & Rufus are just such an example, and yet they take it a step further by taking a step back. The duo, comprised of the honey-voiced Bethany Yarrow (daughter of famous folk singer Peter Yarrow) and the world-renowned cellist Rufus Cappadocia, refine their vast influences through the minimalist combination of voice and cello, while focusing their attention on traditional songs from America's gritty folk past such as "St. James Infirmary," "East Virginia" and "Linin' Track." The results on their debut album, 900 Miles, are stark, haunting and utterly gorgeous. It can draw comparisons as easily to Cassandra Wilson as the Cowboy Junkies, Nina Simone as Jolie Holland. With a national tour on the horizon and festival bookings already stacking up for 2007, it's only a matter of time until Bethany & Rufus are themselves influencing a new generation of artists.Customer Reviews:
Voice and Cello Groove Songs: Bethany & Rufus.......2007-07-16
"If I had My Way," the seventh cut on 900 Miles, speaks of the frustrations of living in an imperfect world and wanting to take matters into one's own hands. "If I had my way, If I had my way, If I had my way in this wicked world, I'd tear this building down." (liner notes) As Bethany "tears it down," Rufus "builds it up." With the assistance of percussionist Gaston "Bonga" Jean Baptiste, Rufus pours a funk driven foundation, starting with sparsely delivered cello riffs, building into a fully furnished two story rhythmic mansion, nicely appointed with luxurious drumming provided by Baptiste.
Throughout 900 Miles, Bethany and Rufus contrast and compliment one another continuously: The calm serenity of the vocal, and the intensity of the cello groove; her flowing lyric and his relentless pulse; the song, and the groove; Bethany & Rufus 900 Miles.
What a refreshing sound.......2007-03-14
Superb Music.......2007-03-13
With all that said, Rufus Cappadocia is a highly unique cellist. Although he is classically trained, he had long since abandoned that traditional approach to music and instead adapted a highly unorthodox style in which he uses his fingers to tap the strings. If you are familiar with the guitar style of Stanley Jordan, then you know what I referring to. The result is a highly percussive and bass-like sound that is far more richer and expressive. This is not to say he has totally abandoned the use of the bow but this does he free him up to play other styles of music such as jazz, african, indian, funk, flamenco and much more. On this CD we see both Bethany and him give wonderful space and expression to each other's talent.
I am not a musician and so my review of his technique would not do him justice but overall I think this is a CD worth listening to. Hopefully you will have a chance to hear more of him.
Best Regards to Che, Zack and Louise :)
Souful performances........2007-03-04
Their new CD makes it obvious why these indie artists are capturing national attention.
It is a stunningly simple and beautiful work, a magical blend of Bethany's electrifying voice (a combination of the husky power of Nina Simone and the open-hearted sweetness of a tiny sparrow) and the mind-blowing, genre-bending cello playing of Rufus Cappadocia.
With a deeply soulful sound Bethany (daughter of folk legend Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary) and Rufus have transformed timeless songs such as "900 Miles", "East Virginia", and "St. James Infirmary" -- pushing the boundaries of American folk far into the territory of groove and sweet soul.

Alternative Hip Hop: Must Have.......2005-11-05
I was living in Boston and my friends and I would spend time browsing the RAP section at Tower records. Two of us picked up "Hell with the Lid Off". To this day, it still amazes me that the rap section is where this album ended up being classified.
This was also a time when true hip hop fans broke down and analyzed the beats, samples and lyrics. After the dissection was complete, my friends and I were all blown away at the complete uniqueness of the album. (I mean, really... who else was layering rough, killer hip hop beats under the incoherent ramblings of a mental patient?!)
I continued to follow the musical career of MC 900ft Jesus with the purchase of "Welcome to My Dream". The album begins with the Miles Davis influenced track "Falling Elevators". It's a song in which the lyrics are equally as haunting as the music. WARNING: Paranoid schizophrenics - avoid listening to this song for the first time while driving on the highway!
Next, the "Killer Inside Me" paints a vivid tail of a serial killer hunting his/her prey. The juxtaposition of this song right after, the spoken word, Elevators provides a great insight into the contrasting styles of this artist and made me wonder - was I listening to the music of a genius or a certifiable Lee Harvey Oswald-type?
My favorite track is the "City Sleeps". I recall living in NJ and listening to Howard Stern interview MC 900ft Jesus about this song, because it had generated a fair share of early 90's hysteria due to the story line of an arsonist on the prowl. The combination of rap, 808, jazz and the perfectly placed sample of "lit `em up like the 4th of July" create a song that sounds as fresh and creative today as it did the day this album dropped.
Right after this album came out, I had the pleasure of seeing MC 900ft Jesus live in NYC at the Limelight. Although unaccredited on subsequent album, DJ Zero performed with him. The show mixed live trumpet playing, rap and a liberal mix of a pre-Scott Wielend use of a bullhorn. It was a musical treat that culminated with DJ Zero's turntable-IZM skills of cutting up the Poor Righteous Teachers sample "...cause...cause I'm on top of this" as he literally climbed on top of the table as he cut the lyrics with his hands, elbows and knees.
I recently began dumping my CD collection to my IPOD and spent the better part of 20 minutes on the genre field attempting to place this album and MC 900 ft Jesus' others. Ultimately, I opted for "UNCLASSIFIABLE" - and that's a great thing.

Different, but very good.......2004-02-21
He's got the vague angry-at-the world feeling of a Linkin Park or Eminem, beats that range from funky wah-wah to sinister electronic thumping, and funny storytelling in the form of absurdist rap. There are quite a few brilliant moments on the album, particularly the monologue on "Dali's Handgun."
All in all, this is a pretty fun and bizarre album that doesn't take itself too seriously, yet is still of great quality.

You Will Be Disappointed If You Are Expecting Music.......2006-12-02
Listen to the samples. The samples are indicative of the entire song, since the samples are just looped to fill a track's worth of time.
Leave this one on the shelf and go check out MC 900 Ft's One Step Ahead of the Spider. It's quirkier and more original than this.
The Future is Now.......2005-11-26
MC 900 Foot Jesus' HWTLO is a staple from an era long gone by. This piece of work can be best described as Beat Poetry interlaced with Acid Jazz smothered in Industrial Hip Hop with a splash of Psychedelic Creativity and Great Rhythm. But, there are many more secret ingredients that I dare not mention. You will just have to taste it for yourself.
Every song on here is excellent. I recommend purchasing this CD, then drinking a lot of alcohol (in the privacy of your domicile) and then turning up the speakers very loud.
This is also a great CD to play at a party. Everyone will love it and think you are the coolest kid on the block because they will have no idea who it is. Share a miracle and impress all of your friends at the same time. You will go straight to Heaven.
This is a "staple" for early electronic music fans........2005-06-30

A cool, restrained, acid-jazzy, and ultra-hip label debut for Texan beat poet Mark Griffin, who previously made two albums for Nettwerk. With its chorus and insistent beat, the loser's lament "If I Only Had A Brain" could follow Beck up the charts. "Buried At Sea" is more typical of his stylistic approach--recited narrative, sax squonks, and a nouveau beatnik ambience that suggests Laurie Anderson on a hip-hop tip. Don't miss "Bill's Dream," a superb instrumental reminiscent of prime Weather Report. --Jeff Bateman

Guarda, cade una matita!.......2001-05-08
I bought "900" because it contained one of my favorite songs from The Best of Paolo, "Gong-Oh." I have listened to the whole CD now over and over. I don't think there is a song I don't like. All the songs are in the same vein as "Gong-Oh," if you are familiar with it--lots of accordion, bongo-type drums, horns, fun rhythms, et cetera. The title song "Novecento" is especially good.
If you already like Paolo Conte, you must get this one too. If you have yet to be introduced to Paolo, then this would also be perfect. The songs are catchy enough for even the uninitiated ear. Ciao.

An oddity when it came out in 1994, MC 900 Ft Jesus' One Step Ahead of the Spider makes a lot more sense in retrospect. It's not a hip-hop album, as it was often categorized, but a jazzy, luxurious spoken word album with Middle Eastern musical influences. Mark Griffen (a.k.a. Jesus) opens the disc with a gloriously evocative tale of distraction and destruction ("New Moon"); later, he takes tours through slackerdom (the hit "If I Only Had a Brain"), insanity ("Tiptoe Through the Inferno"), and pop culture ("New Year's Eve"). The most sublime moment on the album comes courtesy of Vernon Reid's restrained, soulful guitar on the cover of Curtis Mayfield's "Stare and Stare." --Randy SilverCustomer Reviews:

The Greatest Storyteller.......2002-03-07
Shortly after I spent yet another few weeks attaining the rest of his work that was around at that time. I managed to get my hands on two of more his recordings "Hell With The Lid Off" and the single for "Too Bad". Again it took a few passes through the recordings for them to fully take hold. Once they sunk in I truly knew that greatness still existed. From that point on MC 900 Foot Jesus became a part of my every day life.
When I found that another recording was available I practically ran to get it. Finding the recording had finally made its way to the music stores shelves filled me with joy. I purchased the CD, drove home, popped on the headphones, and sank into the world of MC 900 Foot Jesus. It only took one pass through its entirety to befall enamored. The artistic styling of the album is truly beyond its time.
Mark Griffin is to me the Mark Twain of the 90's. His skill at storytelling is what seals up the deal, the music just being an extra perk. Chris McGuire plays the woodwinds and horns as if he had four arms and six lungs. DJ Zero scratches his mixes up there with the best of them. Followed by the rest of the ensemble. The music of MC 900 Foot Jesus is definitely worth looking into.
