Bethany Yarrow and Rufus Cappadocia manage to get quite a bit out of not much at all. Their spare collaboration on 900 Miles references a wide swath of folk and jazz, but the nocturnal smokiness of Yarrow's haunted alto and Cappadocia's cello combine for a sound that's slightly outside of the usual music universe. There's some Cowboy Junkies here, a dash of Tuck & Patti there and an overall otherworldliness more akin to a David Lynch movie. Yarrow doesn't just vamp for the whole record though; her range careens from hushed to strident, and she even does a pretty fair PJ Harvey wail (circa 4-Track Demos) on "Linin' Track," and "Isn't That So?" Meanwhile, Cappadocia often puts down his bow, extracting some funk out of "If I Had My Way," or leading off "East Virginia" with a little Latin guitar flavor. But the heart of the record is in the ballads, as the duo stretches out with long, dark adagio passages filled with dust and desire. Bethany & Rufus successfully transcend their limited instrumentation, coming up with a debut that gets better and better with each listen. -Matthew Cooke

Album Description

It often seems that the best music being made today completely defies category. The most exciting artists might mix influences ranging from dusty American field recordings to modern jazz, from delicate folk pop to the Griot traditions of Africa. Bethany & Rufus are just such an example, and yet they take it a step further by taking a step back. The duo, comprised of the honey-voiced Bethany Yarrow (daughter of famous folk singer Peter Yarrow) and the world-renowned cellist Rufus Cappadocia, refine their vast influences through the minimalist combination of voice and cello, while focusing their attention on traditional songs from America's gritty folk past such as "St. James Infirmary," "East Virginia" and "Linin' Track." The results on their debut album, 900 Miles, are stark, haunting and utterly gorgeous. It can draw comparisons as easily to Cassandra Wilson as the Cowboy Junkies, Nina Simone as Jolie Holland. With a national tour on the horizon and festival bookings already stacking up for 2007, it's only a matter of time until Bethany & Rufus are themselves influencing a new generation of artists.

5 out of 5 stars Voice and Cello Groove Songs: Bethany & Rufus.......2007-07-16

Bethany Yarrow's rich vocals alternately soar, then wail, as she breathes life into the melancholy folk songs found on this captivating disc. The grooves created by Rufus Cappadocia, playing 5 string cello much like a bass, are intricate, bold, and hard driving throughout. Although 900 Miles is their first recording endeavor together, one gets the immediate impression that they have lived and loved this music for a long time.

"If I had My Way," the seventh cut on 900 Miles, speaks of the frustrations of living in an imperfect world and wanting to take matters into one's own hands. "If I had my way, If I had my way, If I had my way in this wicked world, I'd tear this building down." (liner notes) As Bethany "tears it down," Rufus "builds it up." With the assistance of percussionist Gaston "Bonga" Jean Baptiste, Rufus pours a funk driven foundation, starting with sparsely delivered cello riffs, building into a fully furnished two story rhythmic mansion, nicely appointed with luxurious drumming provided by Baptiste.

Throughout 900 Miles, Bethany and Rufus contrast and compliment one another continuously: The calm serenity of the vocal, and the intensity of the cello groove; her flowing lyric and his relentless pulse; the song, and the groove; Bethany & Rufus 900 Miles.

5 out of 5 stars What a refreshing sound.......2007-03-14

Brings back the days of folk singing with a brilliant and new style.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Music.......2007-03-13

First of all I have to admit to a bit of bias as I know Rufus personally. Many times these Amazon reviews are slated with friends and family of the artists or authors as well as those who have vested interest in seeing these projects succeed. For me its best I say it out front as I want to give a personal tribute to a good family friend and superb musician.

With all that said, Rufus Cappadocia is a highly unique cellist. Although he is classically trained, he had long since abandoned that traditional approach to music and instead adapted a highly unorthodox style in which he uses his fingers to tap the strings. If you are familiar with the guitar style of Stanley Jordan, then you know what I referring to. The result is a highly percussive and bass-like sound that is far more richer and expressive. This is not to say he has totally abandoned the use of the bow but this does he free him up to play other styles of music such as jazz, african, indian, funk, flamenco and much more. On this CD we see both Bethany and him give wonderful space and expression to each other's talent.

I am not a musician and so my review of his technique would not do him justice but overall I think this is a CD worth listening to. Hopefully you will have a chance to hear more of him.

Best Regards to Che, Zack and Louise :)

4 out of 5 stars Souful performances........2007-03-04

Bethany & Rufus are an incredible cello and voice duo that slides elegantly between groove, jazz and psychedelic folk.
Their new CD makes it obvious why these indie artists are capturing national attention.
It is a stunningly simple and beautiful work, a magical blend of Bethany's electrifying voice (a combination of the husky power of Nina Simone and the open-hearted sweetness of a tiny sparrow) and the mind-blowing, genre-bending cello playing of Rufus Cappadocia.
With a deeply soulful sound Bethany (daughter of folk legend Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary) and Rufus have transformed timeless songs such as "900 Miles", "East Virginia", and "St. James Infirmary" -- pushing the boundaries of American folk far into the territory of groove and sweet soul.

4 out of 5 stars Home-Style World Music.......2007-02-20

The strings on this cd are artsy and groovy. The music reminds me of "Watson & Co." who used to play Houston art fairs, but with vocals. 900 Miles has a great coffee house sound, but has more variation with the world music flair. The pair are great together. Her voice is crystalic yet very real to believe. This is a good sound to sit and visit with a friend by, or reflect in the story the cd tells by itself.

5 out of 5 stars Alternative Hip Hop: Must Have.......2005-11-05

I have to admit, my exposure to MC 900 FT Jesus was one of random chance. It was back in the day when most record stores didn't have a RAP section and the term HIP HOP had yet to become ubiquitous to the genre.

I was living in Boston and my friends and I would spend time browsing the RAP section at Tower records. Two of us picked up "Hell with the Lid Off". To this day, it still amazes me that the rap section is where this album ended up being classified.

This was also a time when true hip hop fans broke down and analyzed the beats, samples and lyrics. After the dissection was complete, my friends and I were all blown away at the complete uniqueness of the album. (I mean, really... who else was layering rough, killer hip hop beats under the incoherent ramblings of a mental patient?!)

I continued to follow the musical career of MC 900ft Jesus with the purchase of "Welcome to My Dream". The album begins with the Miles Davis influenced track "Falling Elevators". It's a song in which the lyrics are equally as haunting as the music. WARNING: Paranoid schizophrenics - avoid listening to this song for the first time while driving on the highway!

Next, the "Killer Inside Me" paints a vivid tail of a serial killer hunting his/her prey. The juxtaposition of this song right after, the spoken word, Elevators provides a great insight into the contrasting styles of this artist and made me wonder - was I listening to the music of a genius or a certifiable Lee Harvey Oswald-type?

My favorite track is the "City Sleeps". I recall living in NJ and listening to Howard Stern interview MC 900ft Jesus about this song, because it had generated a fair share of early 90's hysteria due to the story line of an arsonist on the prowl. The combination of rap, 808, jazz and the perfectly placed sample of "lit `em up like the 4th of July" create a song that sounds as fresh and creative today as it did the day this album dropped.

Right after this album came out, I had the pleasure of seeing MC 900ft Jesus live in NYC at the Limelight. Although unaccredited on subsequent album, DJ Zero performed with him. The show mixed live trumpet playing, rap and a liberal mix of a pre-Scott Wielend use of a bullhorn. It was a musical treat that culminated with DJ Zero's turntable-IZM skills of cutting up the Poor Righteous Teachers sample "...cause...cause I'm on top of this" as he literally climbed on top of the table as he cut the lyrics with his hands, elbows and knees.

I recently began dumping my CD collection to my IPOD and spent the better part of 20 minutes on the genre field attempting to place this album and MC 900 ft Jesus' others. Ultimately, I opted for "UNCLASSIFIABLE" - and that's a great thing.

3 out of 5 stars Adventures in success........2005-03-28

I have all my cd's split into 12 different categories, and I still fail to find the right spot for "Welcome To My Dream". Is this rap, jazz, spoken word electronica, or just "alternative"? Maybe that's what is appealing about it. Without a doubt what got me into this in 1992 was the track "Adventures In Failure", and it remains my favorite on the album. But I also really like "Falling Elevators" and "Hearing Voices In One's Head". There's also a track or two I always skip, hence the 3 stars. But if you do pick this up, be sure to play it while the "City Sleeps".

4 out of 5 stars Different, but very good.......2004-02-21

I first heard of this guy on alternative radio stations back in 1989. I remember really liking it because it was pretty off the wall, and it was the kind of angry music that walked the tightrope between sincerity and irony way before the days where irony permeated nearly every facet of our lives. This guy was a little too ahead of his time, I think audiences of today would appreciate him.

He's got the vague angry-at-the world feeling of a Linkin Park or Eminem, beats that range from funky wah-wah to sinister electronic thumping, and funny storytelling in the form of absurdist rap. There are quite a few brilliant moments on the album, particularly the monologue on "Dali's Handgun."

All in all, this is a pretty fun and bizarre album that doesn't take itself too seriously, yet is still of great quality.

4 out of 5 stars Odd, but great.......2003-07-01

I was first introduced to MC 900 ft Jesus in my music class. We listened to "The City Sleeps", and as I listened to it wonderfully dark images came into my brain. This is, I believe, the only song that inspires someone to be an arsonist.

So if your in the mood for some great lyrics check this out...

1 out of 5 stars You Will Be Disappointed If You Are Expecting Music.......2006-12-02

This CD is mostly booty bass drum loops with scratches and unmelodic lyrics through a scratch vocoder. If you're expecting this to be like the mellow and disturbingly enchanting One Step Ahead of the Spider, you'll be sorely disappointed. If, on the other hand, you like a sort of noisy, scratchy, fuzzy, repetitive monotone broken up by the one good track (containing a crazy man yelling at some lady), then you will love this CD.

Listen to the samples. The samples are indicative of the entire song, since the samples are just looped to fill a track's worth of time.

Leave this one on the shelf and go check out MC 900 Ft's One Step Ahead of the Spider. It's quirkier and more original than this.

5 out of 5 stars The Future is Now.......2005-11-26

First of all, Thank God Nettwerk decided to re-release this awesome CD with some bonus stuff.

MC 900 Foot Jesus' HWTLO is a staple from an era long gone by. This piece of work can be best described as Beat Poetry interlaced with Acid Jazz smothered in Industrial Hip Hop with a splash of Psychedelic Creativity and Great Rhythm. But, there are many more secret ingredients that I dare not mention. You will just have to taste it for yourself.

Every song on here is excellent. I recommend purchasing this CD, then drinking a lot of alcohol (in the privacy of your domicile) and then turning up the speakers very loud.

This is also a great CD to play at a party. Everyone will love it and think you are the coolest kid on the block because they will have no idea who it is. Share a miracle and impress all of your friends at the same time. You will go straight to Heaven.

5 out of 5 stars This is a "staple" for early electronic music fans........2005-06-30

Where to begin, I have about 20 CDs in my collection of which I will NEVER part with, this album ranks in the upper most 5 of that list. I was hooked up to it from the advice of the owner of an independent "record" (back in the day when there were no CDs) store in Dallas (from which the artist also hails). If you like Meat Beat Manifesto's "Storm the Studio", Nitzer Ebb, early Kraftwerk, and The Beastie Boys "Paul's Boutique", you will love this album.

A cool, restrained, acid-jazzy, and ultra-hip label debut for Texan beat poet Mark Griffin, who previously made two albums for Nettwerk. With its chorus and insistent beat, the loser's lament "If I Only Had A Brain" could follow Beck up the charts. "Buried At Sea" is more typical of his stylistic approach--recited narrative, sax squonks, and a nouveau beatnik ambience that suggests Laurie Anderson on a hip-hop tip. Don't miss "Bill's Dream," a superb instrumental reminiscent of prime Weather Report. --Jeff Bateman

A couple years ago I found "The Best of Paolo Conte" in a box of free CD's a friend of mine acquired from an outlet. I picked it up because it was Italian and looked interesting. I fell in love with Paolo! Man! Musically, lyrically, he is hard to beat.

I bought "900" because it contained one of my favorite songs from The Best of Paolo, "Gong-Oh." I have listened to the whole CD now over and over. I don't think there is a song I don't like. All the songs are in the same vein as "Gong-Oh," if you are familiar with it--lots of accordion, bongo-type drums, horns, fun rhythms, et cetera. The title song "Novecento" is especially good.

If you already like Paolo Conte, you must get this one too. If you have yet to be introduced to Paolo, then this would also be perfect. The songs are catchy enough for even the uninitiated ear. Ciao.

An oddity when it came out in 1994, MC 900 Ft Jesus' One Step Ahead of the Spider makes a lot more sense in retrospect. It's not a hip-hop album, as it was often categorized, but a jazzy, luxurious spoken word album with Middle Eastern musical influences. Mark Griffen (a.k.a. Jesus) opens the disc with a gloriously evocative tale of distraction and destruction ("New Moon"); later, he takes tours through slackerdom (the hit "If I Only Had a Brain"), insanity ("Tiptoe Through the Inferno"), and pop culture ("New Year's Eve"). The most sublime moment on the album comes courtesy of Vernon Reid's restrained, soulful guitar on the cover of Curtis Mayfield's "Stare and Stare." --Randy Silver

Back in '94 this white raper was much like Eminem when his 1st single "My Name Is" came out but with 900 Ft. Jesus it was the single was "If I Only Had a Brain" it was a minor hit but made a big buzz for the young mc he apeared on Yo Mtv Raps 900 Ft. Jesus was going to blow up but then he got droped from his label. The album which back in the day was titled "Spiderz" was bootleged & i got my hands on it and i was not satisfied one cuz the album was sounded like a spoken word poet over smooth hip-hop/gangsta rap beats and it did not fit but never the less it was an allright album 3 & half stars. It was realsed in '98 on major label but did not sell because the buzz died down. pick it up if your a fan of corney, hardcore gangsta white rap or of spoken word! Peace out yall

5 out of 5 stars I have seen the future.......2003-04-08

The song Bill's Dream on this album introduced me to Miles Davis (its a cover of "in a silent way")--and when I discovered the genius of Miles through MC 900, I thought "typical"--why? because Miles was one of the premier explorers of jazz (along with St. John Coltrane)--he invented an entirely new vocabulary in jazz--MC 900 Ft. Jesus, or Mark Griffin, needs to be recognized for what he has brought to the musical vocabulary of music--he combines such homages to the past as "Stare and Stare" and "Bill's Dream" with daring new excursions into the frontiers of jazz's vocabulary--people call this hiphop, but I really think that Mark Griffin is more of a jazz musician influenced by hiphop and techno/industrial--just as Miles Davis was influenced by rock and roll to create fusion--the one thing I would lament on this album, even though I like the track, is that I think "If I only had a brain" might have sprung from pressure by American records on MC 9-0-0 to come out with a hit single--notice that MC 9-0-0 hasn't come out with a record since this one? thats sometimes the story of an artist and a label having differences in opinion--the artist can't do what they want, they can't get out of their contract--and so they stop making music--we then become deprived of a unique and important voice in modern music--regardless of its record company woes, this album is still a daring excursion into the borderlands of the jazz format that largely succeeds--not to mention MC 9-0-0 has some of the most clever, intelligent lyrics of modern music

4 out of 5 stars a tough little nut to crack.......2002-12-11

I sought out this album after greatly enjoying the video for the catchy single, "If I Only Had a Brain." I expected it to be full of goofy white boy hip-hop. Boy was I thrown for a loop! I'm sure this is the same way people who bought Beck's Mellow Gold album just for "Loser" felt. Within the first minute of the gigantic, eerie opening track "New Moon" I realized that this was going to be an album the likes of which I had never experienced before. While a bit uneven at times, One Step Ahead of the Spider is a fascinating musical journey to say the least. From the somber "Buried at Sea" to the ultra-cool "But If You Go" to the just flat out bizarre "Rhubarb" this album is not easy to pigeonhole into any one genre, so don't even bother. Just pop it in and prepare to be astounded. I recommend listening to this for the first time either on a long walk or in seclusion with only your headphones for company.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Storyteller.......2002-03-07

I first experienced the grand sounds of MC 900 Foot Jesus in the early 90's. While up late one night I caught the video for "Killer Inside Me" from the album Welcome To My Dream. My brain savored every moment as the story unfolded its many layers. I was instantly sold on the idea that I had to look deeper into this artist's work. It took some effort to acquire his music but after waiting a few weeks I got my first listen to the entire ensemble of Welcome To My Dream. I was not entirely sucked in at first but after a few times of listening to the entirety MC 900 Foot Jesus became by far my favorite artist.
Shortly after I spent yet another few weeks attaining the rest of his work that was around at that time. I managed to get my hands on two of more his recordings "Hell With The Lid Off" and the single for "Too Bad". Again it took a few passes through the recordings for them to fully take hold. Once they sunk in I truly knew that greatness still existed. From that point on MC 900 Foot Jesus became a part of my every day life.
When I found that another recording was available I practically ran to get it. Finding the recording had finally made its way to the music stores shelves filled me with joy. I purchased the CD, drove home, popped on the headphones, and sank into the world of MC 900 Foot Jesus. It only took one pass through its entirety to befall enamored. The artistic styling of the album is truly beyond its time.
Mark Griffin is to me the Mark Twain of the 90's. His skill at storytelling is what seals up the deal, the music just being an extra perk. Chris McGuire plays the woodwinds and horns as if he had four arms and six lungs. DJ Zero scratches his mixes up there with the best of them. Followed by the rest of the ensemble. The music of MC 900 Foot Jesus is definitely worth looking into.

4 out of 5 stars Evolution of Sound.......2001-11-05

Having been strongly into the industrial scene in the late eighties, early nineties It was inevitable to wander across MC 900 FT Jesus. Originally rejecting the earlier single 'Truth is out of style' from hell with the lid off MC wasn't on my 'to buy' list. However when One step ahead of the spider was released, what I heard an the radio was rapidly drawing me in. I purchased OSAOTS and instantly fell in love. The mature jazz compositions, intellectual lyrics and kick arse beats (remind me of DJ Food's later offerings) really set a new standard for me at the time. 'Stand and Stare' has to have one of the most blissful guitar solos (Vernon Reid) I have ever heard. After I purchased both earlier albums It was interesting to see the wonderful progression of musical sounds on each album. From driving electronic/industrial beats and Public Enemy/hip hop samples to latin/jazz instrumentals it's all there. You really need to buy all three to enjoy the full scope. The only downside is that each album has maybe half great songs and half filler. Enjoy
