5 out of 5 stars An authentic celebration.......2003-07-12

Launched at the 2003 Smithsonian Folklife Festival, this album is an excellent mix of Scottish folk music, showcasing several different styles, regions, and time periods.

The highlights are: Malinky's "Theney," a story ballad of 6th-century St. Enoch; Adam McNaughtan's "Oor Hamlet," a 3-minute rendition of the famous play; the Battlefield Band w/ Alison Kinnaird's "the Silver Darlin's," about the economic shift from fishing to oil drilling on the East coast of Scotland; and Dick Gaughan's "No Gods and Precious Few Heroes," a scathing denouncement of romanticized Scottish history.

The album is alternately delightful, haunting, funny, touching, and foot-stomping. An excellent introduction and celebration of some of the best fiddlers, ceildh bands, and storytelling balladeers that Soctland has to offer.
