Why must record companies endlessly churn out the same familiar stuff, when Tauber recorded many hundreds of songs and operatic items?

And, as another reviewer has justly indicated, at least make the CD contents audible. It's just too irritating to have to keep altering the volume because some engineer didn't bother to get the level right in the first place.

Isn't it possible for recording companies to set a common standard of volume level, particularly when the originals were recorded in a constricted dynamic?

Okay, apart from the rant, Tauber still sounds fine, but some less stale material would be nice. How about next time including some of his radio and stage recordings, such as excerpts from his final Covent Garden performance as Don Ottavio?

Of the eight Lehar items, four are sung in English, and Lehar himself is the conductor in another of them. The recordings date from 1927 to 1939. Rarities include two little songs in which Tauber provides his own piano accompaniment.

Everything Tauber attempted gets my attention. I don’t wish to hear again, however the adaptation of the Strauss waltz “G’shichten aus dem Wiener Wald” that is included here. I eagerly await a reissue of something called “Love Lost Forever More” which featured in “Blossom Time”, one of Tauber’s films.

David Lennick’s transfers are satisfactory, but the volume level is very low.

Disappointing potpourri with abysmal Moonlight Sonata.......2004-08-25

Hungarian pianist Péter Nagy has made quite a few recordings for a number of labels, but I found this 1987 Naxos potpourri rather disappointing. The end of the CD is the best part: Nagy gives a rousing version of Liszt's "Mephisto Waltz" which shows off his ability as a pianist to good advantage. But a lot of the other material on this CD is, in my opinion, not well done. The Adagio sostenuto from Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" sounds anything but romantic; this is not the moon shining on a Swiss lake, as the poet Rellstab thought, it is more like the nextdoor neighbours hammering away to get their woodframe house finished. A comparison of Nagy's version with Rudolf Buchbinder on Warner Classics was like being in two different worlds: Buchbinder sounds like he really believes in Beethoven's music, Nagy sounds like he is playing it because he has to. The same is more or less true of all the slower pieces on this disc, which come over accurately but without real emotion. It's only with the faster, more showy pieces that Nagy begins to get more convincing, but that is not enough to make this CD a winner. The recording quality is good, but not as good as on Volume 1 of the same series.

An interpreter's magic that is spell-binding........2001-04-13

Here is a welcome to a "Nostalgia" series by Naxos, and a welcome into the 21st Century to the great Irish tenor John McCormack. Younger shoppers may not be familiar with this remarkable singer who once rivalled Caruso in the recording popularity stakes. Blessed with the naturally beautiful voice and the secure breath control that any singer might envy, McCormack had the additional ability to communicate directly and memorably and vividly. He polished and perfected his inimitably Irish diction until he felt confident that every listener in the largest auditorium could hear and understand every word. Feeling he had no flair for foreign languages or for acting, he retired early from the operatic stage, but not before he had made recordings of several Mozart and Handel arias that have remained models ever since. Some of his recordings of lieder by Hugo Wolf, moreover, can still send shivers down the spine.

This CD of "Favourites" provides songs he recorded between 1912 and 1940. The sentiments may be passé (patriotism, nostalgia, piety, the praise of women and the sorrow of parting) but the sincerity and charm transcend fashion. There is also an interpreter's magic evident in the dramatic monologue "Kathleeen Mavourneen" and the jaunty recounting of what happened in "The Garden Where the Praties Grow" that is spell-binding.

In the liner notes, the title of this CD is given as 'Favourite Piano Pieces', which seems to fit much better than anything to do with 'Romantic', for here there are gathered miniatures, transcriptions and excerpts by famous and less-famous composers from four different centuries (from the 17th to the 20th)! In fact, the only thing that seems to unite these most diverse tracks is their ability to show off the piano and the pianist to best advantage. The most difficult pieces here appear to be Rimsky-Korsakov's 'Flight of the Bumble Bee' in a transcription by Rachmaninov, and Dohnanyi's incredibly hard 'Concert Etude in F Minor', a fitting close to the whole recital, in which Balász Szokolay is able to distinguish himself as a very able player. The rest of the programme is generally also well-played, with the faster pieces in particular being delivered with skill and gusto, while the slower ones (Debussy, Kreisler) tend to lack something of this enthusiasm; it is perhaps fortunate that the majority of numbers are faster pieces. My personal favourite is Grieg's 'March of the Trolls', closely followed by Handel's 'Harmonious Blacksmith' (which should, of course, really be played on a harpsichord, but still sounds very good on a concert piano) and Paderewski's 'Menuet'. All in all, an entertaining hour of piano playing and excellently recorded, provided you don't mind taking a guided tour through the last 400 years of composition in such a short time.

FAVORITES SAYS IT ALL.......2007-08-01

If you own no Legs Diamond at all this is the place to start! They hit every album, except for live albums and this set rocks from beginning to end. This CD took 28 years to come out and the wait was well worth it. Legs Diamond Cds come and go and the prices of the items flucuates wildly, so, this is usually affordable and a great place to build your collection from. Instead of telling you what I like, let me just mention the only song I can live without, which is Winds of Fortune. It's not bad, but it has just never struck a nerve with me. Because of a previous review I would also like to point out that Loneliness and This Time around are also on the Diamonds are Forever release, but these are not the same versions. On Favorites, all the songs are sung by Rick Sanford, vocalist extraordinaire, including the bonus tracks. Sanford was replaced after an extremely poor performance in San Antonio [he was sick and/or messed up] when the rest of the band was kicking butt. The band picked up John Levesque who played an amazing set with Montrose the same night and the result was Diamonds are Forever. So, there are 2 songs here that aren't featured on anything else, except different versions. That is a good reason to pick this up, although every song here is a contibuting factor to pick it up. Bluesy, hard rock, ballads, slow, Legs Diamond plays them all. They don't have the same old sound on every CD or song, so, grow progressively with some straight forward great rock and roll from a Hollywood, California band [We'd still like to think they're from Texas]. If you are not into Greatest hits then you may like to try Legs Diamond, Town Bad Girl, A Diamond Is A Hard Rock or Fire Power, or pick them up after you can't quit palying Favourites. Get them while they are available or spend your time dreaming about what you could have had. Highly recommended!!!

Diamond Favorites!.......2006-01-13

This collection is very good and the two new songs from the Diamons are Forever cd are really good! Of course there are always some songs that didn't get on the cd but overall this collection spans all their albums. Excellent for any Legs Diamond fan. I highly recommend this one !
