Volume I of the immensely popular Mozart Effect series of music attempts to do no less than "strengthen the mind." One thing is for certain: the music chosen on the disc by author and scholar Don Campbell--excerpts from Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 1; Violin Concerto, No. 3; Ein kleine nachtmusik; and others--includes some of the strongest pieces the composer wrote. Though the performers on this disc (Capella Istropolitana, Northern Chamber Orchestra, and violinist Takako Nishizaki) are far from world-class, this is still a delightful collection and one that--at least according to the liner notes--will increase your alertness and perhaps your IQ. Volume II features music for "rest and relaxation," while volume III will "unlock creative spirit." With music this entertaining, who can dispute these claims? --Jason VerlindeCustomer Reviews:

Music for concentration and focus.......2001-05-14
There is sufficient variety to avoid monotony, and while the musicianship will not garner critical acclaim it is competent and acceptable for the purpose of this recording. I enjoy it immensely. It is one of the rare pieces I will play in the background while doing work that requires serious focus.
good news, bad news.......2000-07-23
Bad news: These music are so well known that to many, it feels redundant. These are not world-class performers or conductors, so the music doesn't have a new intereptation or anything out of the ordinary. Also, I tend to like to have the entire three (or four) movements of the song, not just one movement. And practically all of these songs are the slow movement so it gets redundant.
I would recommend this to any beginning listeners but for more experienced listners, try investing in a slightly more expensive but better performed recordings.

This addition to DRG's Classic Italian Soundtracks series captures spaghetti Westerns at their eeriest and funniest. Ennio Morricone is predominant, of course, with tracks to such films as A Pistol for Ringo and Blood and Guns, and vocal themes to The Return of Ringo and Death Rides a Horse. A rarely heard voice-free version of "My Name Is Nobody" has the virtue of sounding like a soda pop commercial. Other pasta-and-pistols maestros such as Piero Piccioni ("I Don't Forget... I Kill"), Carlo Savina ("The Two Ringos from Texas"), and Luis Bacalov ("Gold of the Proud Ones") make an impressive showing, though there are some dull moments. In contrast to our domesticated Tiomkin-style Hollywood clichés, these eccentric to melancholy flourishes represent fantasies of the American West nurtured by a pastry-crazed European imagination. --Joseph LanzaCustomer Reviews:
Spaghetti Western Soundtrack.......2007-02-02
Death Rides a Horse...While Listening to This!.......2005-07-10
I do have to say, this album almost stands as the best single album of the series (so far). Partially, this is the problem. All the other albums in the series were two CD's. This is just one. Even though all the tracks are very, very listenable, there are only half of them. And, as any good gunslinger knows, two revolvers just aren't as effective if only one of them's loaded...
Despite the slight bump, the album really does hold up well. It continues the tradition of including pieces of music from some of the lesser known films of the spaghetti western genre. At the same time, it gives us alternative versions (the Ennio Morricone alternative versions, for example, provide a much simpler, more streamlined, and sometimes longer, view of his music), or continuations of tracks from some of the movies of Volume Two of this series. In this way, to fully appreciate this CD, you'd best to buy the one previous. Of course, if you haven't done that, why are you even reading this?
And for those keeping score, the only music in this album that I recognize from the video game Red Dead Revolver is (and I could be wrong) located in the track "Seven Guns for a Killing." Just one left; I'm tired.
Great!.......2005-06-02
I was simply looking for all the soundtracks from those countless obscure Italian Westerns that where made in the 60s and 70s. But how to find them, or worse, the titles?
This collection, as well as Part 2, 3, and 4, hosts them probably all. It also has an extensive booklet with very good info on the music, as well as the movies that made them, or is it the other way around? This set is simply the best Italian Western music money can buy, and should be famous and sold-out!
I recommend to buy all 4 sets!

Monuments of 20th century quartet writing.......2000-07-01
Once again it's up to the smaller labels to fill the breach. This is Vol. 1 of the Martinu quartets and if the rest match the quality of this recording there will be inexpensive way to explore these wonderfully rich pieces.
The first quartet, written in 1918, mixes a number of the styles of music then being composed. It has echoes of Ravel, Debussy, Dvorak, Janacek & Nielsen. Although it lacks the distintive stamp of Martinu's later music, there is a wonderful spacious quality to much of the music in the first two movements. The third movements reminds one of Dvorak. Perhaps the finale is a bit long, but overall the quartet holds the imagination.
The second quartet is much terser (about half as long as the first) and more characteristic. The winding theme which opens the first movement is immediately memorable and the piece is replete with the bouncy rhythms one associates with this composer.
The disc also includes a 12-minute piece written by the composer at age 12, which suggests that we may get all Martinu's music for string quartet.
The playing of the Martinu Quartet is vital and focused, meeting the composer's varied moods. Perhaps they are not the most plush group, but this is a small quibble. They will win many adherents to Martinu's music with this disc. Bravo Naxos!

A "Relic" from it's era? Not to these ears!.......2001-05-31
Like a previous review said, this genre of music hit it's peak by the mid-ninties and somewhat piddled away, at least in "popularity", and that's a shame. This stuff is timeless.
Mostly excellent ambient techno.......2000-03-25
The two tracks I found wanting were the ones by Coldcut and The Starseeds. Coldcut, known for its breakbeat rhythms, has produced other tracks that I have found more interesting than "Sign." The Starseeds track is simply too "spacey" for my tastes.
Overall, this is a fine sampler of the ambient electronic music for which the Waveform Label has become known. What's interesting (and also puzzling) is that this style of music seems to have reached its zenith of popularity during the mid-nineties, and is no longer being produced much. To some extent, it has been supplanted by "trip-hop," which has a similarly relaxed, chillout feel, but which to my mind, relies wayyyy too much on a formulaic hip-hop-type beat and bassline. I'd love to find some RECENT compilations that exhibit the style of music presented in "Three A.D."

A Good Albinoni Disc (one of the few remaining) . . ........2002-02-14
The performances on this disc are fine. Since it's a compilation, it features a variety of performers (Maurice Andre, Xavier Darasse, Pierre Pierlot) and conductors (Jacques Rousell, Raymond Leppard, etc.). Although the majority of these recordings were made in the late 1960's and early 1970's, the sound quality is good. True, there are plenty of DDD discs out there offering Albinoni's 'Adagio,' and the sound quality on these discs is superior. But with the exception of the Philips (Op. 9) and Erato (Opus 9, 10) labels, this is the only disc avaiable (that I'm aware of) that offers the listener more than a mere taste of Albinoni's work.
So if you're a fan of Baroque music, I recommend that you give this disc a try. It's nicely priced, and worth the investment.

Album Description
This newly remastered reissue marks a welcome return to the catalog of the first volume of the classic 4-CD collection that was formerly available on the CRI label. The works recorded on this disc span the first six years of what Harry Partch (1901-1974), slightly tongue-in-cheek, called the "third period" of his creative life. They show him moving away from the obsession with "the intrinsic music of spoken words" that had characterized his earlier output (the vocal works of 1930-33 and 1941-45) and towards an instrumental idiom, predominantly percussive in nature. This path was to take him through the "music-dance drama" King Oedipus (1951)-the culmination of his "spoken word" mannerto the "dance satire" The Bewitched (1954-55), in which his new percussive idiom manifests itself. The three works on this disc show Partch before, during, and after this period of transition. In their quiet, forlorn way, the Eleven Intrusions are among the most compelling and beautiful of Partch's works. The individual pieces were composed at various times between August 1949 and December 1950, and only later gathered together as a cycle. Nonetheless they form a unified whole, with a nucleus of eight songs framed by two instrumental preludes and an essentially instrumental postlude. Although foreshadowed by the dance sequences of King Oedipus, the Plectra and Percussion Dances (1952) are the first of Partch's major works to be wholly instrumental in conception. They stand in relation to Oedipus as a satyr play in relation to a Greek tragedyhence the work's subtitle, "Satyr-Play Music for Dance Theater." He felt that after the prolonged period of composition and production of Oedipus it was "almost a necessity to give vent to feelings and ideas, whims and caprices, even nonsense, that seem to have no place in tragedy." The final work on this disc is Ulysses at the Edge, written at Partch's studio at Gate 5 in July 1955. Ulysses, which Partch describes as a "minor adventure in rhythm," is unique among his mature compositions in that, in its original form, it did not call for any of his own instruments. The version recorded here, for alto and baritone saxophones, Diamond Marimba, Boo, Cloud-Chamber Bowls, and speaking voice, is considered the third version of the piece.Customer Reviews:
