No other Otis compilation quite satisfies the way the old double-LP best-of does, but never mind: any way you hear Redding's many great moments is a good one. The Very Best splits ballads and up-tempo stuff half-and-half, letting you hear the great one's humanity in every mood--the pile-driving rock of "Respect," the preaching fervor of "Try a Little Tenderness," the nascent reflection of "Dock of the Bay." A record collection with no Otis is a poor thing: here's yours. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

One of the greats of soul .......2007-03-21
Sittin' in the morning sun
I'll be sittin' when the evening comes
Watching the ships roll in
Then I watch 'em roll away again, yeah
I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Ooh, I'm just sittin' on the dock of the bay wastin' time
I left my home in Georgia
Headed for the Frisco bay
'Cos I've had nothing to live for
And look like nothing's gonna come my way
So I'm just gonna sit on the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Ooh, I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay wastin' time
[...]
Look like nothing's gonna change
Everything still remains the same
I can't do what ten people tell me to do
So I guess I'll remain the same, listen
Sittin' here resting my bones
And this loneliness won't leave me alone, listen
2000 miles I've roamed
Just to make this dock my home
Now I'm just gonna sit at the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Ooh wee, I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay wastin' time
There are also other outstanding works here. Redding reportedly did not want to do 'Try a Little Tenderness' but his version is an original and strong one.
The grainy coarseness of his voice was nonetheless lyrical, catching and upbeat in its way.
This is 'Soul Music ' at its best.

Although their first album appeared in the early '60s, it was with 1975's "They Just Can't Stop It (Games People Play)" that the Spinners really got moving. They emerged as one of the poppiest of the '70s soul bands, which cost them dearly in credibility. But their best songs were stunning--and by the time original vocalist Philippe Wynne left the group, in 1977, they'd racked up enough successes to stuff a greatest-hits package from top to bottom. Atlantic's 1978 "Best of the Spinners" LP was that package, although this release augments it with later hits like "Working My Way Back to You" and "Cupid." Another anthology package, a double-CD released by Atlantic Records, packs in even more, but the essentials are all here. --Gavin McNettCustomer Reviews:
Great collection of one of the best soul groups ever!.......2007-05-27
Where to start with The Spinners themselves? They are incredible, and thru-out quite a few personnel changes they still kept there essance.
If you purchase this, expect to hear a talented gifted lead singer, with a crew of equally talented singers backing him up. Expect Dense instrumentation, much more dense, and plush than most of the Music of this genre at the time. Production wise it pulls influence from both Soul, and Disco, which is an interesting combo, because I hate disco but like Soul, and I LOVE this.
Lyrically they are solid too. The songwriters for The Spinners were in the background, but should not be treated second rate. They had skill... Expect most of the songs to be love songs, but there is other topics. I enjoy the interesting Social Commentary on Poverty and the effect it can have on a childs self esteem on "Ghetto Child".
Simply put, this is a must have for a true Music Collector, or lover. Cop this.
STANDOUT TRACKS:
Quite honestly, sense this is a greatest hits of a great group, I can't choose... Every track is a beuitiful peice of art.

A by-the-numbers, chronological collection that hits all the commercial highlights of the Drifters' Golden Era (1959-64)--after the frequently dazzling early records with Clyde McPhatter, but featuring the consummate vocal stylings of Ben E. King, Rudy Lewis, Johnny Moore, and more on 16 memorable hits. Among the pinnacles: "There Goes My Baby," the record whose unsettling, soaring strings launched the soul era; the romantic perfection of "Save the Last Dance for Me," "This Magic Moment," and the contagiously catchy, Latin-bouncing "Sweets for My Sweet;" and the eternally evocative cityscapes of "Up on the Roof," "Under the Boardwalk," and the stark, gritty "On Broadway." Sleepers include the heartrending Bacharach ballad "Please Stay," "I Count the Tears" (ripped off later on the Grass Roots hit "Let's Live for Today"), and "When My Little Girl Is Smiling," on which strings foreshadow the folk-rock movement. An ideal starter kit on these seminal uptown soul pioneers; those seeking further revelations (and there are plenty of them) are referred to Rockin' & Driftin': The Drifters Box. --Ken BarnesCustomer Reviews:

It's hard to believe that UB40 have been around since the early 1980s, but the proof is right here in the 18 tracks on this album. While most famous for their cover songs, UB40 have written a good portion of original material that's excellent. But songs like "Red Red Wine" and a previously unreleased version of the Doors' "Light My Fire" will attract the majority of listeners to this collection. Following in the footsteps of greats like Bob Marley and Burning Spear, this band from Birmingham, England (led by the two sons of folkie Ian Campbell, have helped keep the flame of roots reggae alive with their easy sound. They've even made over rock standards into their reggae template, including Sonny & Cher's "I Got You Babe" (with guest Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders). In their own little way, UB40 have been gnawing away at musical barriers for the last 20 years, and this is an ideal summary of their achievements. --Chris NicksonCustomer Reviews:

Decent Collection.......2006-09-07
"Red Red Wine" was chopped nearly in half, and "Give Me Your Cup" was also either a shortened version, or not the version I was looking for.
Great UB40 value with added sound quality .......2006-06-30
This CD covers that period in a thorough manner. Another version, a double Best of Vol. 1 & 2 CD from the UK does have a more thorough selection of their songs. This one has, however, the main hit songs. With the exception of the remake of Light My Fire, there is not a single song on this collection that is not classic UB40. One could go on and on about which other songs should have been included but then it would have been just as difficult choosing songs being left out instead.
Their music has aged very well and many songs are becoming standard classics, even ones that were standards in other versions. In short, if you like casually UB40, this is the set to buy.
The sound has been re-vamped which can be heard very well on some tracks. Compared to the UK Best of Vol. 1 & 2 version, the bass on Here I Am, which is prominent in the mix, is much more vibrant and the whole sound staging has audibly more depth then on the US version, whilst on Kingston Town the synthesizers are clearer and the slight echo in the singing channel more natural, giving the song more of its special aura. These songs and other newer tracks have an added edge on the US version over the Best of Vol. 1&2 which is in a way analogous to the difference of a brand new LP verses a worn one.
On older tracks the difference is more audible, since the recording technology during the later period is more similar to what is used today. 1 in 10 has a significantly lower and more muddled sound and their first single, Food For Thought, is so vastly different sonic wise it is as if a blanket has been put over the speakers on the Best of Vol. 1&2 version (incidentally, the Left-Right channelling is reverse on the Food For Thought mixes).
To summarize, this is an immaculate collection of the hits of UB40. Sure, I would have like a few extra tracks but keeping to a single CD, this collection is very close to perfect.

Amazon.com essential recording
One Love, a remastered retrospective of poli-spiritual musical icon Bob Marley's major-label work completed before his 1980 death from cancer, may well replace 1984's Legend as the best-selling reggae album of all time. One Love is 20 cuts to Legend's 16, a set that plays in chronological order of release as opposed to party mix. As with the latter, One Love presents the sweet organ-driven and feedback-scarred live version of "No Woman, No Cry" as well as album versions of classics like "I Shot the Sheriff," "Get Up, Stand Up," and "Jamming." Single versions of "Buffalo Soldier" and "Exodus" sidle up to the full-band cut of "Redemption Song" and the soulful Marley/Curtis Mayfield medley, "One Love/People Get Ready." A fine sampler of the Tuff Gong years from 1972's Catch a Fire and onward, One Love is aimed at the casual Marley fan rather than the hardcore completist, though its final track is indeed a rarity: the Marley-penned, Lee "Scratch" Perry-produced "I Know a Place." A moving ballad-styled anthem of solidarity and freedom, it was recorded in 1977 and is unavailable on any other Bob Marley & the Wailers album. One Love gives clear evidence of why Marley's legacy endears and endures nearly a generation after his passing. --Paige La GroneCustomer Reviews:
Good, But Left Out Important Songs........2006-06-24
I do like how they have put it in year order, and have included a song off each album, apart from Babylon By Bus, well they just had to put on "No Woman No Cry" of Live, so I will let them off.
"Roots Rock Reggae", is another great song deserving a place on this album, but maybe "War" or "Positive Vibration" to replace that, or to add on to it.
"Coming In From The Cold" deserves every right to be on Legend and this, it is just an amazing song and has had not enough credit for it.
Otherwise that, it is a strong album, and worth the money.
A good purchase.
Forget "Legend" this is the Best Bob Marley Compilation that's Out There!.......2005-12-31
An excellent, underrated Marley compilation.......2005-12-01
INTRODUCTION:
Bob Marley. Over the years, he has reigned supreme as the ultimate name in reggae music. Despite passing away in the early eighties, his music remains consistently popular. And it isn't hard to see why, as it really does stand the test of time. Despite dying young, Marley's career contained a plethora of music, and as such, many compilations of his work have been released over the years. The most popular compilation of Marley's work, though, would have to be the Legend compilation, released in the middle of the eighties. However, Marley has a number of other, lesser-known compilations. How does the lesser-known One Love measure up? Keep reading and find out!
OVERVIEW:
Bob Marley's One Love compilation was released in 2001. The compilation features twenty tracks, spanning many years of Marley's career.
REVIEW:
Bob Marley has a LOT of compilations, no questions asked. None of these compilations are bad, by any means. In fact, every one of them seems to succeed in areas that others don't. Legend is the best-known of all of Marley's compilations, and it isn't hard to see why. It was a single-disc, affordable compilation that hits all of the high points of Marley's career. However, just because Legend is the all-around best-known and most widely revered of all of Marley's collection does not mean it is the best one. One Love is an underrated gem of a hits compilation. For the most part, the tracklist is similar to Legend, but there are some changes. The set drops one track from Legend, Satisfy My Soul, and adds seven others. Also, this compilation uses the full-band version of Redemption Song, rather than the acoustic one that was featured on Legend. The order of the tracklist also got a total revamp. While Legend featured a non-chronological running order that was well suited for it being a "party" album of sorts, One Love uses a chronological order. I have always preferred chronological retrospectives in that they show you how the artist evolved over the years, and it works excellently for Bob Marley. Granted, some people may prefer the non-chronological running order of Legend, and it's not hard to see why they do, really.
OVERALL:
No matter which Bob Marley hits compilation you buy, you'll get a damn fine overview of his career. If you're just the casual Bob Marley fan who wants an affordable, single-disc overview of his career, you have come to the right place. Despite not being as well-known as Legend, this set is nothing less in the quality department. If you're a casual fan or just someone who is seeking an affordable yet effective introduction to the music of Marley, this is just what you need. Highly recommended!
EDITION NOTES:
Sadly, because this compilation is not as well-known as the classic Legend compilation, it is not as readily available. For that reason alone, you may want to go with the single-disc remastered version of Legend. Still, if you can find One Love, it is a worthwhile set.
Thank you.......2005-09-08

Hard as it is to go wrong when shopping for a Brother Ray package, some career-spanning compilations bundle the decades better than others. Count this one, true to its title, among the very best. The track sequencing is straight-up chronological, opening with 1954's groundbreaking blues and gospel mingling "I've Got a Woman." From there it charges through the late-'50s Atlantic era, rounding up classic singles like "Hallelujah (I Love Her So)," "(Night Time Is) The Right Time," and "What'd I Say." By the time the disc lands us in the '60s, the Genius has saddled up to explore his country side, turning in such popular-music-altering hits as "Georgia on My Mind" and "I Can't Stop Loving You." A final cut jumps into the '80s for the Willie Nelson duet "Seven Spanish Angels," leaving the listener with a solid--and deeply satisfying--sense of Charles' bold artistic wanderings. All that's missing is his soul-dunked rendition of "America the Beautiful." -Tammy La GorceCustomer Reviews:
