Philosopher, seeker after the truth, reconciler of science and religion, teacher, guru to artists, writers and musicians, Gurdjieff was an enigmatic figure; even his birthdate is uncertain: 1866 or 1877. He taught movements "to alter or heighten consciousness" at his Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man, located outside Paris---a highly improvisatory process for which he composed equally improvisatory music. Technically untrained, he depended on skilled assistants to realize and write down his ideas, and found one in a devoted disciple: Ukranian pianist/composer Thomas de Hartmann, who selflessly suspended his own career and, after Gurdjieff's death in 1948, privately published and recorded some of their collaborations. As a composer, Gurdjieff, born at the border of Armenia and Turkey, was influenced by the region's ethnic and cultural diversity, by his childhood memories of the religious and philosophical songs improvised by his father, a Greek troubadour, by the hymns of the Greek Orthodox Church, and by his extensive travels through Europe and Asia. For this recording, the performers themselves arranged his compositions for cello and piano, adding five pieces by pianist Tsabropoulos, including three based on Byzantine hymns. Both players have been involved with Armenian, Ukranian and Greek Orthodox music; both are expert improvisers. Their strong feeling and affinity for the material allows them to approach it with both reverence and freedom; the playing is primarily subdued and inward. The piano texture ranges from delicate tinkling to full-blooded chords and arpeggios; the cello, playing mostly in the low and middle register, often in unison with the piano, sounds dark, warm and beautiful. The music, except for one lively dance, is slow, solemn, and mournful, in the minor mode. Melodies featuring oriental intervals are elaborated but not developed; based on single-note drones, harmonies are static or move in stepwise progressions but do not modulate. This lack of contrast and variety creates an otherworldly, disembodied atmosphere, despite several buildups of motion, dynamics, and intensity. --Edith Eisler

5 out of 5 stars Must have!.......2006-01-12

This amazingly beautiful album to me is the soundtrack of Anatolia, of an era gone by when Turks, Greeks, Armenians and other ethnic groups shared their lives peacefully and harmoniously. Its sadness inevitably reminds me of millions who unnecessarily died on this soil in many wars fought in early twentieth century, of people forced to leave the only land the knew for unknown destinations and destinies, of the unimaginable hardships endured by its people. And more personally it takes me fom New York and puts me right next to my father's grave in a forgotten Anatolian village, 6000 miles away.

4 out of 5 stars an artistic triumph.......2005-12-28

Peaceful, meditative, sad, introspective, deceptively simple. Classical. Coming from a deep sense of inner peace, like all things from the Work, but NOT New Agey.

Mystical.

Mr Gurdjieff sang or hummed his songs and Thomas deHartmann "wrote them down and added harmony". Hard to tell where Mr. G stops and deHartmann starts, but we will never know. Mr G speaks of Objective Music and the vast majority pieces of subjective music. This is the former.

I must confess that many other peformances and arrangements of the music of Gurdjieff/de Hartmann, the way it was "supposed to be played", left me cold. Most of the other renditions I heard were played by those Drunk with Orthodoxy, amaturish or just plain lacking in musical ability.

This version is a revelation!

I think G would approve of this.

I like this, I think that the arrangements for cello and piano instead of just piano, as written, is an artistic triumph. The cello played by Anja Lechner expresses the peace and meditative sadness inherent in the music, even if that wasn't the way it's usually played. Composers are often not the best intepreters of their music.

That having been said there are three part to this music, pieces by G/deH, Tsabropoulos and then more G/deH and when the pianist sticks his own works in the middle of Mr G's the quality of composition falls somewhat. His compositions are or similar mood and type to G/deH, but really don't have the same achieve the same heights of depth and soul. (Mr G would say they are not Objective Music, I guess.) Perfomances of all pieces are uniformly good.

I would hope this group will arrange more of Mr G's music in this format in the future.

Recommended.

2 out of 5 stars Interpretations of Gurdjieff's Music.......2005-12-14

You may want to pass this one up if you enjoy Gurdjieff's music as he intended it to be. To me these seem like rambling, flimsy interpretations of strong, articulate works (if you have heard any of the Kremski recordings, you know).

The arrangements do not seem to have captured the spirit of Gurdjieff's music very well. If someone did with Beethoven what has been done with Gurdjieff's music here, I don't think it would be taken seriously.

If you are interested in a new "twist" on Gurdjieff's music, then you may enjoy this. If you enjoy Gurdjieff's music closer to the way which he composed it, then you will want to look for a different recording.

5 out of 5 stars Inspired Subjectivity Encounters An Objective Music.......2005-03-19

Georges Ivanovitch Gurdjieff's music was first given a broad public exposure with Keith Jarrett's recording "Sacred Hymns" in 1980. The public was perhaps already partly prepared for this music in 1979, due to the release of director Peter Brook's beautiful film on the life of G.I. Gurdjieff, "Meetings with Remarkable Men". The closing sequences of "Meetings with Remarkable Men" show the middle-aged Gurdjieff being taught about deep ontological truths through live performances of both music and dance.

In the 1920's, at his Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man, Gurdjieff continued this work by collaborating with Thomas de Hartmann on creating an "objective music". A music that "would work upon all listeners equally, focusing their mental life and bringing them to a new relationship with the living universe". It is probably Keith Jarrett, who has worked closely with the Gurdjieff Societies of both London and New York, that has produced the most "authentic" or "objective" reading of Gurdjieff's music in recent years.

On this ECM New Series disc of 2004, "Chants, Hymns and Dances", Anja Lechner and Vassilis Tsabropoulos decided to take a more liberal, "subjective", approach. Their interest in these compositions is perhaps more "musical than philosophical". Their suitability for this task should be apparent. Lechner's most recent work has involved interpreting the music of both Armenian Composer Tigran Mansurian and the Ukrainian Valentin Silvestrov. While Tsabropoulos, for his part, has worked with ancient Byzantine music and the music of the Greek Orthodox Church.

According to the informative liner notes by Steve Lake, "This music exists for the individual to make of it what he or she will, according to capacity". Lechner and Tsabropoulos both have deep experience with composed music and also with the process of free improvisation. Indeed, these two performers brilliantly interpret Gurdjieff's music with gentle assurance and a bright spontaneity. The five original compositions on this disc by Tsabropoulos even suggest an affinity with the Gurdjieff sensibility that borders on predestination.

"Chants, Hymns and Dances" is worthy of repeated encounter and remains serenely vital with each new audition. This is an ambiguous music that defies easy spiritual classification.

5 out of 5 stars Simply unreal.......2007-05-16

I find it utterly, amazingly, unthinkable that ANYone can come up with ONE 'negative' thing to say about this collection by the inimitable Ms Streisand. This CD..this music --- just transports me....elevates me...changes my mood and outlook......it is an ethereal listening experience..almost religiously hypnotic in its beauty, eloquence, and simplistic beauty. Some of the songs bring a lump to my throat. It's a joy and a privilege to hear this Artist render her vocal and emotional interpretation of these classic aural wonders.........a true gift to the ears. Bravo. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars/ Lisa Guerci in CT

4 out of 5 stars a brave journey.......2007-05-14

to record this set of songs was a huge risk for barbra streisand to take. but what other singer would put themselves on the line like this and record a whole album of classical material except barbra streisand?

dusty springfield had a song or two that borrowed melodies from the classical music genre, and aretha franklin famously growled her way through 'nessun dorma' at the grammys back in 1999. but this is very different and bold.
and no one, not even those with the vocals chops and training like linda ronstadt wouldn't take this one on for size.

it is easy to hear that streisand has put all her stylistic trademarks on hold and performed her recital with integrity. and at times, a different streisand emerges and it's quite nice. it's only a phrase here and a note there but it's interesting to hear.

be warned--she still sounds like barbra streisand. and there's one song i personally wish she hadn't sang (the canteloube), only because there's another song in that canon that might have served her even better called 'la dellaisado'.

2 out of 5 stars A for effort, C for execution.......2006-08-23

One does have to applaud Barbra for the effort, for showing that she really does care about music, not just her own. Everyone knows about her forays into pop, rock and even disco. Alas, while her voice is lovely, it seems more like an album of lullabies than classical lieder. She actually did a more authentic classical performance of a Schubert song on her TV special "Barbra Streisand and Other Musical Instruments." Alas, this serious effort never comes close to showing the range of her voice that she played with in that 2 1/2 minute song. A missed opportunity.

5 out of 5 stars BARBRA,BARBRA,BARBRA!.......2006-03-04

This CD shows why Streisand is who she is; the ultimate DIVA! This lady can sing anything and on this wonderful collection she proves it. Barbra recored the album way back in 1973, and because the record label was afraid of low sales due to the classical nature of the material, didn't release it until 1976. What a treat for fans of Barbra and fans of classical music. Barbra showcases hew vocal strengths in the 10 tracks singing in different languages. I first heard this CD at a dinner party 15 years ago and pretty much forgot about it until I saw a few for sale on Ebay. I remembered loving it and immediately bought it through Amazon. I highly recommend this CD for all those people who simply love music. It will put you in a very relaxed mood, almost as if your home is filled with candles. Since I bought it I've listened to it at least 20 times or more and will continue playing it in my home. Don't worry if you can't understand what Barbra is saying if you don't comprehend the laguage of the song; you'll know it's still Barbra doing what she does the best. A few final notes ; Barbra Streisand was nominated for a Grammy for the album. And Streisand has personally stated that this was the hardest album vocally she has ever worked on in her career. In short a beautiful CD for any home.

5 out of 5 stars A promise fulfilled.......2006-02-02

In 1963, when Streisand released her first album, there was no doubt she was a unique and talented singer. Some ten years later, after becoming a great success, she proved with "Classical Barbra" what a nurtured and developed talent is capable of. She didn't sit on her laurels and continue to churn out Broadway warhorses in an attempt to play it safe. Instead, like a true artist, she challenged her abilities. Her reward, and ours as well, is this absolutely gorgeous CD. Her voice, at a level of near perfection, glides effortlessly across each tender note of these well picked gems. If anyone ever doubted man's reason for existence, please, do yourself a favor and buy this CD. You will be inspired for a lifetime.

Amazon.com essential recording

This vocal recital certainly lives up to its title, perhaps too well. It's a collection of arias and songs Fleming has sung for years that for some may be too much frosting and not enough cake. Surely, her performances are rich with interpretive nuances, wonder-filled portamentos and word colorings that reflect a long history with this repertoire, which ranges from Charpentier's "Depuis le jour" to Rachmaninoff's "Vocalise." Some may find Fleming a bit much, but agree with her or not, she's far more interesting than singers who keep a safe, discreet distance from the music. --David Patrick Stearns

4 out of 5 stars Renee Fleming sings favorite works.......2007-07-30

Renee Fleming has turned out a fine CD of arias with which not everyone is familiar. Outstanding are Depuis le Jour from Charpentier's Louise and Marietta's Lied, Glueck, das mir verblieb, from Korngold's Die Tote Stadt. The latter is one of the most haunting arias ever written. Many of us cannot get it out of our minds. She includes Chi il bel sogno di Doretta from Puccini's La Rondine and does it well. Hers is not really a Puccini voice. Perhaps Richard Strauss and Mozart are her strengths.

5 out of 5 stars The best of the best........2007-04-11

I've given away at least a dozen copies of this CD. I'm running low, so I just refilled the stash. For people who haven't discovered Renee Fleming or who think they don't care for opera, this CD is the best possible way to blow down the walls. If you think there's nothing new to be heard in these old arias, you owe it to yourself to find out how wrong you can be.

5 out of 5 stars The most gorgeous soprano voice I've ever heard.......2006-01-02

I am a 19-year-old voice student at the University of Central Arkansas and I came across Renee by way of a soprano in my voice studio. She said it was her favorite soprano and that I should give her a listen. I was a little hesistant because I'm a baritone and my voice teacher told me that I should listen to men, but I just want to hear it all. So this past summer I first bought Renee's self-titled album with all of the lolipop arias on it and I was just amazed, not just because of how good she is but how easy she is to listen to. I loved her voice immediately. From the the moment the first tone passed through her throat on Puccini's "O Mio Babbino Caro." So I had to hear more. The Beautiful Voice is even better. It wasn't as easy to listen to at first because some of the songs on this album are not as famous as those on the other one, but these songs are all gems. The Korngold with the pianissimi B flats is my personal favorite. Even my mother who screams at me to turn down that "noise" when I listen to opera cds has grown to be quite fond of Renee Fleming. Sometimes her interpretations can be over the top, but the voice is beyond spectacular. It pours out like melted butter. It's vibrant, rich, expressive, free and always perfectly in tune. There is no hint of strain from any sound emitted from her body. She will undoubtedly be remembered like Callas & Sutherland and all the other great soprano voices before her. Not for the dramatic intensity of Callas or the coloratura & technical ease of Sutherland, but for the sheer unspeakable beauty of her voice. This is a must have for any vocalist seriously dedicated to classical training.

4 out of 5 stars It's good and all but..........2006-02-03

A lot of these tracks on these cds were... poorly recorded. If you hear an alternate, well produced version, the difference is night and day. But if this is your stop, you could do so much worse. It is rather relaxing.

4 out of 5 stars My Opinion.......2005-08-11

I like the peacefulness this cd brings to my day. At the end of work, I go home to play this and it completely clears my mind.

5 out of 5 stars Mood music collection with plenty of good selections.......2003-12-28

If you are looking for a wonderful cd to load into the player and create a mood, this set of adagios is practically perfect. Spanning baroque to modern, the pieces are well-chosen for beauty and variety. Even if you are not particularly knowledgeable about classical music, you probably will like this set. I like samplers for background music, and this is one of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Haunting and beautiful.......2007-06-26

While I do agree that the booklet which comes with this CD could be better (a whole paragraph seems to be missing after the description is cut off mid-sentence!), the music contained within is otherworldly in its beauty. If you like your choral music very simple and pure (accompanied by either only one understated instrument, or acapella) you'd find this very enjoyable. Lovely bright-toned tracks with a few hauntingly dissonant gems by Vasks thrown in will give you goosebumps.

4 out of 5 stars Latvian Women's choir.......2005-10-05

listening to Dzintars is an interesting and surprising experience. i'm not too versed on chorale cd's; but this is one that demands your attention. the voices are absolutely gorgeous. so beautiful at times that it seems unearthly. i first heard this group of singers on a label sampler cassette tape many years ago. i had found the tape in a used bin for one dollar and i thought it would be fun to listen to some international music in my old car. well, Dzintars was the first performer on the tape. and it was the song "Blow, Wind, Blow" (the first track on this cd). when i first heard it, i almost had to pull my car off the road. it is such a blindingly beautiful sound that it sent chills throughout my entire body. i listened to that song about 10 times in a row and i could never get enough. the next day, i bought their full length release. this cd is a mixture of the women performing traditional Latvian songs and some more modern material. i think that the folk songs have a much stronger impact than the modern songs (which seem to have alot of strange avant-garde sounding shrill dissonance at times...which can be cool). but the beauty contained in songs like "The Sun Moves Quickly", "Where have You Been, Brother?", and "Blow, Wind, Blow" are worth the price of this cd alone.

2 out of 5 stars Beautifully sung but badly produced.......2004-01-12

I have nothing but praise for the performance of Dzintars, a Latvian women's chorus, but I am disappointed in how badly this project has been put together. First of all, it is unclear beforehand exactly what is on this CD. I was hoping for a program of traditional folk songs from this corner of the world (which has an amazing wealth of folk music). It turns out to be a mixture of traditional and modern, which is fine - but not what I really wanted. The titles are all given in English, but the chorus sings (thankfully) in Latvian. There is an acoompanying booklet, but it has little useful information and there are no texts and translations. What were the producers thinking??? A program of sung music in a foreign language MUST have texts and translations. The music is lovely, but who knows what they are singing about? The listener has no access to anything beyond pretty sounds. The producers of this CD, Rykodisc, deserve the blame for this botched release.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Gorgeous.......2003-03-12

I heard one of the tracks from this album on a sampler CD that I have since lost , and I was so completely enchanted I hunted down this CD. I wasn't disappointed. This is some of the most heartbreakingly beautiful choral music I have ever encountered-- and after six years it still hasn't gone stale on me. If you like choral music at all (maybe even if you don't), buy this album.

5 out of 5 stars I still love this cd!.......1999-07-21

I have had this album for a year now, and I am still just as amazed at it as I was when I peeled it out of its plastic wrap and set it in my cd player the first time. I can't put this music on and go wash dishes or sort laundry... I must sit and close my eyes and listen. It makes me want to go and buy a set of expensive headphones. This is a wonderful album, which I will force all of my friends to listen to, and which I strongly recommend to anyone who likes to listen to music.

Album Description

A soulful, eclectic collection of chants and songs, chosen for their capacity to inspire and uplift. Beautiful vocals, combined with lush instrumental backgrounds including piano, harp, guitar, hand drums and choral vocals. Co-producer and arranger Russell Walden contributes keyboard and piano tracks, as well as harmony vocals on many of the songs. Eddie Daniels, internationally known clarinetist, is a guest artist on the track "Only Make Believe". In addition, a host of gifted Santa Fe musicians (including Shaina's husband, Richard) contribute instrumentals and back-up vocals. Lyrics include:

--"...In this time when the Earth is waking to the dawn of another age, I tell you now, there is no reason to be afraid..."

--"God of Beauty is now reigning in the temple of my heart..."

--"Where I sit is holy, holy is the ground, forest, mountain, river, listen to the sound...Great Spirit circles all around me..."

--"It's in everyone of us, to be wise, find your heart, open up both your eyes...we can all know everything, without ever knowing why, it's in everyone of us, by and by..."

--"On a clear day, rise and look around you, and you'll see who you are...on a clear day, how it will astound you, that the glow of your being outshines every star..."

5 out of 5 stars Some of the most uplifting and inspiring music you'll ever hear.......2005-08-30

On her second release, Shaina Noll has compiled ten beautiful, inspiring and uplifting songs, which she performs with sincerity, conviction and passion. Her love for her listeners is palpable throughout each piece. As Shaina has said, these ten songs are pieces, which helped her on her own personal journey, and I am sure they will nurture and inspire anyone who takes the time to listen. Just open your heart, relax, and allow the positive messages and majestic power of these songs to course through you.
Each song contains beautiful orchestrations, exceedingly powerful lyrics, and messages of love, healing and unity. They teach us to honor mother earth, all her inhabitants, and ourselves. Shaina has a warm, rich and highly expressive voice sent straight from Heaven, and sure to sooth your soul. The variety of material here is fantastic... from the reflective and encouraging "Brother Warrior", to the achingly lovely "Only Make Believe" and the delightfully soulful final track, "Sometimes It's Easy", every song presented is a gem, sparkling with vibrancy, intensity and power! This is music that simply must be heard, felt, and lived! This is one musical journey you truly should not miss!!! Allow Shaina and this exceptional music to guide, encourage and inspire you. I am a better person for having listened. Thank you, Shaina, from the bottom of my heart. I can't recommend this album highly enough! Please, "Listen, Listen!"

5 out of 5 stars GREAT.......2002-03-19

This is easy to listen to and gives you a good warm feeling...
THANKS Shaina

5 out of 5 stars Shaina's second CD is richer, fuller, deeper.......2000-06-13

As a long time fan of "Songs for the Inner Child," I was eager to hear her second release, "Bread for the Journey." The moods on this CD are much more diverse, ranging from the very powerful and soothing "Brother Warrior" to some very playful, upbeat songs. (It did take me a little adjusting, as the mood on her first CD is more single note.) My most surprising favorite is "On a Clear Day." This is a song I had heard many times, but never actually listened to! Shaina's version carries so beautifully the energy and message of this song: On a clear day...you can see who you really are. The produciton values here are much improved, and for me this increase in professional sound quality only adds to the synchrony of Shaina's lovely voice and the heart-felt songs.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Collection of Excellent Music - Paganstyle.......2007-07-03

This CD is a great collection of the best of what pagans can do with their music, a wonderful celebration of life, the goddess and the earth. I was very impressed with the maturity of the music as well as the visions of ritual and gatherings that these tunes invoke. Many thanks to Reclaiming and Friends for sharing their talents.

4 out of 5 stars Witches' Brew.......2007-02-17

'Witches' Brew'is a selection of songs compiled by members of the Reclaiming Tradition in San Francisco. It combines Reclaiming songs, chants, and intrumental music to create a truly inspirational blend.

The best part of 'Witches' Brew' is the combination of both complex prose with simplistic chant. Songs like "Who is the Goddess?" paint a beautiful and vivid portrait of the immanent Goddes, while "Passage" takes us through the power of the elements.

'Witches's Brew' is unique is that it is not-for-profit. Each song was donated and the CD functions as a fundraiser for a group of people who do many great things for the NeoPagan community in the Bay Area.

4 out of 5 stars Nice collection.......2007-01-06

I wasn't sure what to expect with this CD when I ordered it as there are no audio clips available. Truth be told, as a newbie pagan the title "Witches Brew" amused me enough to take a chance on it. Turns out I needn't have worried as the CD is well done. Each track is enjoyable and often stirring. Don't miss the humor of "Summerland" or the simplicity of "And When I Rise" for reflection.

Our babies are grown, but we still listen to this CD. It provides a romantic background. In fact, I just bought it for a 60 year old woman who is getting remarried. Everyone needs a bit of romance.

5 out of 5 stars For calming babies, pets, and adults--TERRIFIC.......2006-01-20

I purchased this CD about 10 years ago. Since then, I have made five other purchases. My first copy got swiped, borrowed for life, never to be returned. The soothing classical tunes calmed a 3 month old who was fighting sleep with strong healthy lungs. The second copy I purchased for myself. The third a gift to the next baby in the family. It has been my pleasure to keep looking, needing and finding this music CD. I've tried others but did not have the same tranquil effect. There is one song with a woman singing in a coo. My neice of 6 months tries to do the same--and she, too, is another fan.
I don't find the smooth transissions between pieces to be disturbing in the least. I highly recommend this to those needing
a tuneful means to relax, to those suffering cut-sleep with infants, or those with high strung animals who freak when thunder
or windy weather rocks the house!

    2 out of 5 stars a disappointment.......2004-02-19

The songs on this CD are crammed one after the other, with little or no pause in between, which causes a jarring effect when listening to it.

5 out of 5 stars A slow jam tape of classical music.......2002-05-30

This is a great collection of slow stuff for classical heads and people who simply have a light appreciation for the form. The songs consist of some standards and some less-than-obvious choices, but all great stuff. While it's being marketed as a children's lullaby compilation, it's great for anyone looking for some background music for a cnaldelight dinner or road trip.

Solid execution and selection. The only ballad-filled classical CD you HAVE to get.

5 out of 5 stars Every new parent needs this CD........1998-11-14

This CD, with no large dynamic changes and more than 70 minutes of soothing music, has been on our boom box in our son's room every night since we brought him home. He's almost 18 months old. We buy this for all our friends who have babies and personally think that it should be given to parents as they leave the hospital. Highly, highly recommended, beats every other lullaby CD we've got. And trust me, after 18 months, we got plenty.

I found this CD by accident and am glad I did. It has become one of my top favorite CDs. We play it every week on Shabbat now. Anyone that knows and understands the Siddur should really appreciate this wonderful music. Some things are timeless and this music is one of them.
